Chuns Reef Beach Estate sits on a lot of approximately 10,000 sq ft, with 130 feet of ocean frontage. It is located three miles from Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay and Haleiwa town, on the famous North Shore surf spot and snorkeling beach at Chuns Reef.

We rent the estate as three separate units: Deluxe Ocean Sunset (2 bedroom, sleeps 6, elevated lanai, expansive views), Oceanfront Bamboo Studio (Sleeps 4, shaded oceanfront lanai, steps to the beach) and Detached Garden Cottage (1 bedroom, very private, outdoor garden lounge area). This listing is for the Oceanfront Bamboo Studio.

The home was originally constructed as the Laniakea Trai...n Station in the late 1800s. Because of it's history, it is built much closer to the ocean than current regulations allow - closer than most oceanfront homes on Oahu. It's unique position as a point home on the edge of Chun's Reef Beach means there are neighbors on only one side.

We have raised the home above the winter surf on large cement pillars, added wide wrap around lanais, and recently added a beachfront hot tub for the exclusive use of our guests. The home's location and elevation give it an unparalleled view of the beach, ocean, turtles, and sunset; and allow easy beach access.

The Oceanfront Bamboo Studio is cut into the side of the hill, under the house. It is surrounded on three sides by rocks, and very private. On the northern side, glass sliding doors offer an expansive ocean view, and open onto a large covered patio (lanai), just steps from the beach.

The studio was remodeled in April 2006, and features a granite kitchen counter top, bamboo walls, a cedar ceiling and 500 sq ft of parquet wood flooring. In the living area there is a queen bed and double futon couch bed and a large TV. The kitchenette has convection and microwave ovens, a mini refrigerator, blender and coffee maker. The private bathroom has a stand up shower.

With the ceiling fans on, and sliding doors open, the cool breeze circulates inside. Sounds of the ocean fill the studio, even during the calm summer months.

The covered lanai is roughly 300sq ft, with an additional 250sq ft of uncovered patio area. There is a hammock and gas BBQ on the lanai, a coffee table, small dining table and chairs. Nearby, a private gated walkway leads to the beach. The hot water yard shower is great for a quick rinse off after swimming. In Dec and Jan the waves increase and we move Lanai furniture to Bamboo side yard patio and may put storm board over the front sliding glass doors for a day or two if necessary.

This unit has undergone a major upgrade as of June 2009, including lots of new furniture and gorgeous bamboo trim.Read more

  The porch was the best place to grill after surfing and taking an outdoor shower. The place was great to sleep in with the sound of the water all night.

  Wonderful Experience! Beautiful North Shore Location with Extra

  This rental is located on one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu's North Shore. Chun's Reef, Back Door Chun's, Leftovers, and Piddleys' are my husband's favorite surf breaks, and this house puts you within walking distance of them all. The house is situated immediately in front of Jackos. "Turtle Beach" is immediately to the left around a bend composed of black lava rock.
  
  We stayed in the lower level Ocean Front Bamboo Studio with our son and our dog for a week. We lived on Oahu at the time, and this was one of the few rentals I found that accepted large dogs. The unit was very clean and comfortable. There is no air conditioning, but that wasn't an issue in March. The ocean breezes and sounds of the waves were wonderful! It might be a little warm in July or august, though.
  
  This house is located right on the beach! It is a great place to stay in the spring and summer. The lower level might be a little too close during the winter during high swells. This suite has two private lanais (patios). It has a grill, a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and other appliances. The owner also provides access to coolers...she will loan you whatever she has available. There are a washer and dryer shared between this and the other 2 units...laundry soap and dryer sheets are provided, as are beach towels and tons of beach toys, chairs, etc.
  
  There is an enclosed heated shower that you can use before entering into your rental unit after trips to the beach! This is a great feature! Our skinny son loved rinsing off in the hot water. Even the dog enjoyed a warm rinse!
  
  Parking is secured. This is a high theft area (Oahu's North Shore), but we had no issues during our stay. This house is located right off Kam Highway. The large stone wall blocked most of the road noise. Our stay was quiet and relaxing! The sound of the surf put us to sleep each night!
  
  The only negative was the set up of the bathroom...you have to walk through the shower to get to the sink and toilet. It's a very strange set up. We did not find this to be a big issue, but it's worth noting.
  
  There is wonderful jacuzzi overlooking the beach...we loved warming up here and watching the whales, dolpins, sea turtles, etc.
  
  Marlu West is the owner and is a great hostess. She leads a beach clean up monthly and is very environmentally friendly. Check-in and check-out went smoothly. She allowed us a very early check-in, which was great!
  
  We are planning to return within the next year or two. Since our dog will not be with us, we'll try to reserve the upper floor unit for a change. It has more room and a full kitchen.
  
  I think we paid about $240 per night. For anyone who thinks this appears overpriced, we saw it as a bargain for what you receive in return...a relaxing stay on Oahu's North Shore with all the comforts of home!
