Hammondsport is located on Keuka Lake, one of the most beautiful of all the Finger Lakes. The lake has seventy miles of shore line, is one hundred seventy-five feet deep and the hills go up from the lake to a thousand feet. It is the cleanest of the Finger Lakes and has great fishing. There are two parks and beaches with life guards, a boat launch and boat docks in Hammondsport. It is a small village but has great restaurants and shops. Aviation began in Hammondsport when Curtiss flew the first publicly witnessed air plane flight, home to naval aviation as the first navy plane, the A 1, and the America were built and flown here. The Curtiss Museum flies replicas of these planes on special events off the lake. Curtiss also set air speed records and drove his motor cycle 133 miles per hour in 1907 making him the fastest man in the air and on the ground. The first American women, Blanch Steward Scott, flew here. Visiting the Curtiss Museum is a real treat. This area is now the second largest wine district in the country producing award winning wines. We believe our Rieslings are now the best in the world. We are in the center of the wine district which was begun by Dr. Franks Vinifera Wine Cellars located just six miles from us. Free Parking and walking distance to lake, swimming, park, restaurants and shops.
