Description from the owner
The real Hawaii that few experience. An ecotourism site in a public botanical garden with a farm stay. It's a duplex, a stone's throw away from the main farm house, with 2 units that are one room studios with private baths and gas appliance kitchens. Not fancy, but comfortable with choice of queen bed or 2 twin beds in the Marine Studio and at this time, a discounted stay in the Flower Studio with no refrigerator. This is the semi tropics with all the interesting things that go with that. Conservation and environmental oriented. You are welcome to pick fruit in season, if you know what it is. Located about 3 miles from Hana Village which has...Read more

I'm ok with rustic but this place was, well at best somewhat scary. In the dark of the night the place crawled with creatures, you could hear them scurrying along the floor and even thudding, yes they were large, at times. There was no fridge and BB is certainly not the case. She left two juice boxes, really, I'm not five. I get being Eco friendly and all but the towels were not even matched they looked as though they had been bought at the flee market and put up. Used bottles of lotion and etc from whenever gross. Our stay cost $125.00 not worth it at all. The garden was pretty in the morning though.

StatyonRustic and Comfortable

It is clear that these two studio B and B's were prepared with loving care. We stayed in the Flower Suite adjacent to the Marine Suite. Each has more name-themed items than any themed room I have ever stayed in: on the walls are delightful original artworks (however, the glass covering them is dusty) and it is fun to just see one more item that JoLoyce added that was either Flower or Marine. However, this thoughtful care and preparation was done years ago. And JoLoyce is no longer able to keep things as sparkling clean as she used to. The Marine studio is much nicer and larger in my opinion, a bit more light in the Flower studio.
We found the beds comfortable, the place, though showing age, certainly adequate. When you compare them to the overpriced cabins in the nearby state park they are quite an upgrade! Because the "rustic" state of these studios has kept many away we did have one thing we prize dearly: complete privacy. We had the whole garden to ourselves! And, because our unit was missing a refrig and had lock problems (as if we ever lock our door at home), we were given a great discount. We felt we got what we paid for. I did suggest that JoLoyce just drop the B part of the B and B: the costco muffins, boxed juice and make-your-own coffee would be nice additions if you were not expecting breakfast!
Like most places like this, if you know what you are getting, you will probably be happy. We were.
And I found a book, James Michener's Hawaii that I wanted to reread. I was about a third through it after our three nights there and JoLoyce graciously let me take it with me. -

Los AngelesQuaint Cottage in the Middle of a Botanical Garden
Left on 12/14/2011 for a stay in December 2011
In short: great value, cute and quaint cottage, pretty clean, private and a massive garden to walk thru and enjoy. Also across from the popular lava tube.
We booked a cottage here despite some of the reviews that scared us a little. It was the only place that had all 3 nights available for our stay. Hana Kai wanted us to check out everyday and check into a different unit after a few hours for all 3 nights! They still wanted to charge us the full fee! So we headed over here.
As a painter, I really liked the colors in the Marine cottage. I also like all the little unique accents, décor and chimes she had hanging in the place. The cottage was clean and needs just a few repairs to become a top notch place to hang out and charge twice as much. Wifi router is one thing that would help since cell phones don't work here. Had I known I would have brought one for her
The soft toilet seat needs to go ($10). Oven needs a vent, but it worked like a charm compared to the weak electrical one we had at the luxury condo in Lahaina where we stayed before heading to Hana.
We bring Lysol wipes and wipe everything in any place we stay at. This place was pretty clean especially considering they did not even charge us a cleaning fee. The attached cottage was not rented for our 3 nights and nor was the yurt in the backyard, so we had the place all to ourselves.
The bed was pretty good for us. I have Rheumatism and I am very sensitive to beds.
We are avid gardeners, so we realize the 1 or 2 spiders we found at the place are great for the garden and for keeping moths, gnats and mosquitoes at bay but I can see how the average Joe would not like seeing any spider. I realize that is just part of Hana and part of nature in general and would rather have less mosquitoes. Most spiders are solitary and want to be left alone so are of little danger to humans
We also loved Henry, the all lovey one year old boxer mix that kept us company. Saying good bye to Henry was tough.

I certainly enjoyed having these guests. This is a farm stay in the semi tropics so not the normal tourist stay. It is so great to have people who really enjoy being in the real Hawaii. Henry liked them, too.
