PortlandHale Reed--great beach + hanalei base camp home
Left on 02/03/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We've been to Hanalei many times...with various sized groups of family and friends...so have stayed in different rental homes each time to accommodate the size of our group. This time, we were 7 adults and Hale Reed (both up and downstairs) fit us--and suited us-- beautifully. The house has the best decks and private out door spaces...as well as comfortable beds and a very well equipped kitchen. Yes, the closets and cupboards are full of plates and bowls and the like, but this makes for easy entertaining. The rooms on either end of the upstairs are essentially their own suites...nice for couples. The beach--via Hanalei pavilion--is just a 1 minute walk, yet the house is off of the busy road and we mostly heard the voices of surfers and families coming and going on foot to and from the beach. The top floor is really a great huge room for relaxing, playing, games, reading...and i imagine would be a marvelous place for younger children to play and make their own. Beautiful views and breezes up on this level too. We hope to stay at Hale Reed again someday soon.

Seattle, WAOur very favorite vacation spot!!
Left on 12/20/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We spent 10 days at Hale Reed and had an excellent experience. House is beautiful with gorgeous views from the wrap-around deck. The beach is just steps away from the house and is wonderful, wide and safe. The house is decorated with local art and feels very much like you're staying as a guest in a gracious home. There is much to do with town a short walk; the ability to rent wake boards down by the pier and several other world-class beaches just a scenic drive away. Extras are fast and free internet wireless, an outdoor shower, a well-stocked kitchen, boogie boards and loads of books to read. We can't wait to go again.

Left on 12/07/2012 for a stay in November 2012
my family and I stayed at this house and absolutely loved it. The pictures do not do it justice. The location is perfect...just a few steps to the best beach but not on a busy road. The house had everything you could need including ample beach gear and a fully stocked kitchen. I've stayed in many vacation rentals but this one felt like someone's home. Full of very cool decorations and books. If you are looking to travel with a family and stay in the best town on Kauai, this is the location for you.

Left on 10/07/2012 for a stay in September 2012
This was my second time staying here. First the good stuff.
The house is located fifty feet from the county beach park. This is the most family friendly and safe beach on the island. The house has plenty of space for multiple or large families. There are beach chairs, a couple bikes, boogie boards, and such. An outdoor shower laundry facilities are on site. A nice tv and wireless internet make this easy to settle in to.
The full time residents/neighbors are friendly and nice and the area is safe. We let our daughters walk the fifty feet to the beach unaccompanied.
For the less than stellar.
As mentioned, I stayed here seven years ago, and things that bothered me then still have not changed. First, the bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king size bed. The other two bedrooms have tiny fulls. I got stuck in one of those and barely got any sleep next to my wife. Just too small with the warm tropical temps to be on top of your partner. The bedrooms could use ceiling fans to help circulate the air. The bedroom doors had to be left open with all of the windows open and it was still stuffy. We stayed the week prior in Poipu and had no such problems with a queen bed and a ceiling fan.
The kitchen. There is a lack of modern pots, pans or cooking utensils. This stuff has not been replaced since my last stay and is from the early eighties to begin with. None of it is nonstick and the largest frying pan is 8". The refrigerator keeps things cold but everything gets soaking wet from a leaking freezer or something. The coffee pot is rusted to the point I was worried it might short out.
Lastly is the cleanliness. The closets are cluttered to the point that you can barely hang things up,old blankets and such that smell musty are stacked in them, blinds are really dusty, and overall the house could be emptied of clutter. The deck furniture is starting to fail as well.
I have not checked nearby rental pricing but for the $$$ I am expect a bit more.Response from Sally Sellar Reed - 10/15/2012
Owner
I am so sorry & sad that these guest had issues of which they did not contact me, some of which I would have been able to correct, such as a new coffee pot from the storage room & checking the refrigerator temperature settings. They could have phoned me for free on the house phone at any time, but they did not. All guests are encouraged to call me if there are any problems. There is also a list of others to call. To fail to contact me and then to subsequently complain is unfair and mean-spirited.
There are three bedrooms, of which one has a king, another a queen, and the smaller of the three rooms, a full bed. The guest has incorrectly described the regular size queen & regular size full beds as ‘tiny full beds’. Moreover, the bed sizes should have been of no surprise to them, for prior to booking, all guests are provided bed size information. This guest has previously stayed at my vacation rental. The, only difference from their previous stay is that one of the queen size beds was replaced by a king size bed.
There are 3 ceiling fans in the main part of the home, but the bedroom ceilings are too low for fans, so I can’t do anything about this. I provide numerous portable fans for the bedrooms. Why didn’t they use them? Again, they were familiar with my house having previously rented it.
The kitchen is well supplied with quality items. The pots & frying pans are of top quality stainless steel & currently available for sale in quality stores. I choose not to use the teflon as it gets scratched right away & does not look good. Also non-stick pans that are damaged may or may not be a health hazard. I err on the side of caution. There are 3 sizes of pans, including a 10” pan. The quests never complained about the cooking utensils in their previous stay.
The closets need to hold items to operate the house. Each bedroom closet holds an extra set of sheets, spare blanket & an extra set of pillows for each bed & other items many guests find useful, such as a portacrib, high chair, ironing board, fans, vacuum cleaner, etc. In any case, most of the same type of items were in the closets the last time the guest booked, & there is adequate space & hangers to hang their clothes. Perhaps it is ‘clutter’ what you don’t need to use yourself.
Originally, these guests booked as 2 couples & 3 little children. Shortly prior to arrival, they requested adding another couple & small child. I said that was alright if they felt they would all be comfortable as they were familiar with my home size. They were still within my home limit of guests & my requirement that everyone sleep on a comfortable bed. I was assured there would be no problems with this.
The mini blinds are problematic as I am so close to the salt water that they are hard to keep perfectly clean. I hope to replace them shortly as I am continuously upgrading my home & furnishings.
My home has been a work in progress over the past 20 years that I have owned it. I am continually upgrading the house & furnishings. There was no mention of the new higher quality living room furnishings; better kitchen lighting or the many other upgrades or indeed the living room ceiling fan which is new since their last visit.
Again, I am sorry that they did not contact me if they had any issues. I did, however, receive complaints from neighbors that there was too much noise on several occasions, when they had promised me, prior to their arrival, that they would be careful to not be noisy and respect my neighbors.
The writer believed that value for the dollar was absent in my rental fee; however, he did acknowledge that the location was outstanding and within steps of one of the finest beaches, and that my home had many amenities. It is furnished with quality furniture; well supplied with kitchen needs; linens & well maintained-- in spite of being so close to the salt air & the ongoing rust issues that dwellers in the tropics have to confront on a regular basis.
These guests comprised a party of 6 adults & 4 children. They paid the low season price of $357 per night to house 10 people or, presuming they split the rent 3 ways, $119 a night per family. If they believe they could find another rental with a location as close or closer to one of the finest beaches & that provides all or more of the amenities that my rental provides, then they should go for it. My home books close to 100%, & there are many grateful families that appreciate what I offer and that my rates are under the rental market for the area.

Our family vacationed here two weeks in 2010, two weeks this summer, and dream about returning soon. We love this spacious family home just steps from our favorite beach. Hale Reed is an amazing home - warm, gracious and very comfortable. The wrap around deck as well as the upper story have lush, panoramic views.
Our family loves the Hawaiian furnishings, art and books about Hawaii. The welcoming style of the house reflects the owner's love and care over many years. -

Just back from a week at Hale Reed - we had the upstairs and our friends rented the garden apartment - we couldn't have hoped for a better vacation home! Steps from the beach, a short walk to town, a relaxing wrap-around deck, outdoor shower, well-stocked kitchen, lots of space inside for everyone to spread out. Sally is great to deal with, and was very responsive to all our questions. I could have spent my entire vacation on the deck, looking at the mountains, watching the birds and just relaxing, but the town of Hanalei has a lot to offer and the beach is superb. There's definitely something for everyone at Hale Reed!

Our family of four had just an amazing week in this ideally located home. The place felt like home right away as my son opened up a closet and found a guitar waiting to be played and all the amenities that make you feel as though you are truly at home not at a hotel or resort. The location is right across the street from one of the favorite surf beaches on the island and a short walk in the other direction you will find plenty of great restaurants and shops you could ask for. We plan on coming back soon!

This place treated us to everything we had hoped for. A few steps to beautiful Hanalei bay and a five minute walk to "town" with all the service you could need. The apartment felt really homey, with a well equipped kitchen, clean and comfortable rooms with everything from books, dvds, games to a guitar and ukulele! With the laundry room and all the beach toys, it was totally equipped for a great stay! We would be back soon if it wasn´t so far away (we live in Sweden). But when we come back-we will stay here!! Thank you Sally!

Hale Reed in Halanei was marvelous. I have stayed in Halanei many times but this was the first timne my extended family had visited. The layout of the house was perfect for a large group and really enhanced their introduction to the islands: big living/dining room that could hold everyone, plus smaller nooks for privacy. It was immaculate and the furnishings seemed quite new. The location made beach access very easy but still had plenty of pravacy. The 270 degree view from the lanai - mountains to beach - was awesome.

We have been traveling to Kauai with our 2 daughters since they were young and they are now 23 and 26 and we are still going as a family. We have stayed in many homes in Hanalei over the years and Hale Reed is the first place we have stayed in 3 years in a row and hope to for many years to come. The location is fantastic and the home is comfortable, airy and well appointed. Sally always makes us feel so welcome and she personally handles all the details. The huge lanai and upstairs sitting room are a great bonus and we love being across the street from the beach and walking distance to town.

From the time we arrived until we left we enjoyed our stay at Hale Reed. We felt as though we were at home rather than in a rental property, as the apartment is tastefully decorated in Hawaiian decor. A stroll to the beach and town centre made it conducive to relaxing. Music, books, kitchenware, beach equipment and more were all provided making our stay very comfortable. Sally was very accommodating and pleasant to deal with making our arrangements to stay in her home very easy. I look forward to returning and would recommend her home without hesitation.

A quiet location, with a very short walk to one of the best beaches in the world, Hanalei Bay. And, a short walk to the quaint town of Hanalei. This is north shore of the garden isle at it's best. The house is spacious, with a layout that accommodates privacy and well as common area.

Our extended family (7 of us) stayed in this home twice. The second time was like returning home...just unpack and your vacation begins. You couldn't ask for a better location. Park your car and you can walk to town and restaurants and the beach and any shopping you want or need. The home is large enough to enjoy family meals but also private time. We loved the outdoor shower and wrap around deck. My husband and I returned without our family another time and stayed in the apartment. There were people staying upstairs but we were still extremely comfortable and had plenty of privacy. I'm planning my 60th birthday right now and if everything works out I'll be having two glorious weeks at Hale Reed!!!

Our family has first visited Hanalei over 30 years ago. We have stayed at Hale Reed for many, many times and have wonderful memories.
This location is ideal, just a short walk across to the main beach of Hanalei. The home features a master bedroom suite, guest bedroom with private seating area as well as an additional bedroom on the main floor. The loft area is spacious and very comfortable. On-site laundry, boogie boards and beach chairs are all available.
A short walk will take you in to downtown Hanalei for shopping.
As always Sally is great to work with and makes the rental process very easy.

This is a lovely home right in the heart of the beautiful town of Hanalei. It is located less than half a block from the beach at Hanalei Bay, and the walk to town is five minutes. The home is very spacious (we have stayed both in the main upstairs area and the apartment) with many windows with allow for beautiful views of the mountains and tropical greenery, and the deck is a wonderful place to socialize or read and relax alone. The apartment is spacious also and very comfortable. In either you feel like you are in a home away from home. My husband and I have vacation and stayed at this location five times since 2003. The home is comfortable, clean, nicely furnished, and very cosy. I highly recommend it.

~We had such a wonderful time staying at this vacation house! It is such a lovely home that is beautifully furnished and decorated in a way that creates a really comfortable tropical atmosphere. The setting is incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The house was very clean and came with all the amenities a person could ask for. The best part was how close we were to the beach, just a quick walk across the street and there we were, right in the middle of lovely Hanalei Bay. The house is also nicely located within walking distance of downtown Hanalei. The service we received from the owner of this wonderful home was really great. She was very helpful and accommodating. We will definitely return to stay at this tropical paradise in the future and highly recommend it.
