We understand that rental management can only urge owners to make improvements but , ultimately, it is up to owners to do so. The Chung ohana needs to take stock of this cabin and make it work or lower their rates especially for multi week stays. What's needed ? (1) functioning lamps to read by, we had to go buy one; (2) awnings or other mitigation to keep the heat down inside particularly when Kona winds prevail; (3) an outdoor shower to rinse off after beach; (4) a stereo that allows music cd's to be played, there's is broken only radio with bad reception; (5) some better furniture and a picnic table for the carport and a bigger Weber, current plastic stuff is barely useful; (6) a wine bottle opener, we had to buy one; (7) new living room furniture, current stuff is way past shelf life; (8) replace dining room chairs that are brutally uncomfortable and visually pretty gross; (9) some shade trees around cabin would really help with sun and aesthetics and, (10) stock of beach chairs, boogie boards, umbrella etc. almost all unuseable, we bought our own.
We have been to Hanalei more than eight times since 2007 and are only looking for a comfortable place, not luxury. Chung gets a 3.5 on our scale and that's due to proximity to beach, not the place itself. It really wouldn't cost much to make this a nice rental, now it is not.Response from Na Pali Properties - 05/31/2013

This review is from a repeat guest with our company and we are very surprised to see this post. They came into the office during their (discounted) 3 week stay to discuss their return for 2014 and rebooked-not once did they mention any of these items on this review.
We of course would have immediatley addressed their concerns had we known. We have passed this on to the owners (who happened to be the next arriving guests) and they have replaced a TV set, a new larger BBQ, a new outdoor dining table and chairs, a new standing lamp. The queen bed was replaced this year as well. They are also considering installing a new outdoor shower.
This house is not a new or luxury property and is just as advertised-a budget property in a beach town-a considerable bargain compared to other properties in the area. -

We stayed at the Chung Cottage for 2 weeks in January. It was perfect for us in a lot of ways. So great to be close to the beach. The house needs updates pretty badly, but it would be nice to not make it fancy. I love the feel of it now, but seems a little dirty, especially the couches. It was nice to be close to restaurants and also to be able to cook in the cottage. Some old bikes at the house would make it even nicer. The TV shuts off after watching it or 30 minutes and won't turn back on until it cools off. Oh well, shouldn't be watching TV while in Hanalei anyway... We had a great time, we'll come back.

Aloha to our guests-We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and appreciate the feedback on the Cottage-we have had a busy season this year and will make an effort to do some deep cleaning as soon as we get a break in the calendar. We will also address the televison issue..
Many guests also love the "retro" feel of this former Fishermans' cottage-a rare jewel in Hanalei
We look forward to your return- -

We enjoyed our stay at the Chung Cottage. We were pleasantly surprised how clean and well kept it was. For our needs and budget, it was perfect. You can't beat the location right near Hanalei Bay. The kitchen had what we needed to cook and eat in most of our meals. Thank you!

A perfect cottage for relaxation, working holiday, and watersports enthusiasts. Unbeatable location related to beach access and short walk to Hanalei for groceries, restaurants and entertainment.
I would give another star if the cd player, which has been broken for the past five years, was replaced. -

Chung Cottage is simple and homey - and a quick walk to the beach. Accomodation was comfortable and clean. I like a simple cottage - no granite countertops or dishwasher here (and none needed). All told, just what the doctor ordered.
Na Pali Rentals got back to me quickly about questions (like how to turn on the hot water heater!). -

The Chung Cottage worked out great. Close to the beach and close to the shopping and restaurants in Hanalai. Barb at Na Pali Properties was very gracious and helpful and helped make our time there very special.

The place is simple and a little run-down, but comfortable except for being flea- infested. I ended up with bites all over my back, legs and arms. Pretty uncomfortable.

Great little place to stay if you are not too fancy. Location is top notch for beach users, surfers, or artists. Flexible space for all kinds of activities. Kitchen is simple, small, but functional. Shower near entrance door. I have stayed in the Chung house for well over a decade.

I thought Chung Cottage was in a great location. A block from the beach and a
few blocks into town.
It has a old run down feeling. It could really use a reno. Take out the carpets
first and give it a good scrub. Replace all rusted appliances. Add a closet and
at least one chair. Replace the can opener and buy a pair of scissors. Make the
dining area feel less like a garage.
Despite the items listed above it was charming and we enjoyed our stay.

Great laid back accommodation. Beach house feel without all the frills. Excellent location. 2 of us stayed there. We thought the next time 4 would be comfortable. 6 is certainly do-able. A couple of town bikes with the place would be perfect.
NaPali Properties were mostly thorough and helpful. I must tsay that the reception in the office was a bit cool..no telling what that was about. I attributed an early communication lull to a syndrome so familiar to my own laid back Mt town..."it's all good"
In the end, very good experience and would absolutely 100% rent again from NaPali and the Chung Cottage will be at the top of the list.
Cheers,
Allen
