Edmonton, CanadaA peaceful week in paradise.
Left on 03/11/2013 for a stay in February 2013
We spent a great week in early February at the Hale Ma Kahina house. The house was a great choice for our first stay on the north end of Kauai. Three blocks from the wonderful village of Hanalei and two blocks to the roaring surf of the Pacific made it's location idyllic.
The house was a great space; clean, open, bright; we felt totally at home immediately. We would recommend the Hale Ma Kahina to anyone looking for a great place to hang your hat while on the north coast of Kauai. -

Victoria, BC CANADAHappy to stay in Hanalei!
Left on 10/28/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Hale Ka Mahina was everything it was promised to be, and a little bit more!
Definitely lots of space for our party of 6 (4 adults, 2 kids). Great lanais for sitting outside and listening to the rain or taking in the beautiful mountains.
Well-equipped kitchen and nice bathrooms. Beautiful wood floors and high ceilings give a nice airy feel. Comfortable sofas in the living room too.
A few picky points to follow... Could use higher-powered fans in the bedrooms, as the trade winds dropped off during our visit and it was hot!! Laundry facility is pretty poor with washer filled with sand from previous uses and really over-hot dryer. Tv was pretty small and in an awkward place for viewing, although it worked just fine for our 4 year old. Nice to have a stereo. Would have loved screens on all the doors to provide better flow-through of air through the unit. We left our master bedroom door open the first night and our 5 month old got about 15 bug bites throughout the night ;( We didn't do that again of course, but as I mentioned before, it was hot! Also, the window drapes were pretty hard to adjust and didn't offer any light blockage whatsoever, so you're going to be awake early. One last note: the lack of a proper dining table was definitely challenging for us. If you're traveling with more than 4 people, or have children with you, the table is next to useless and you have to sit at the kitchen island. The stools provided are not that comfortable and certainly unsafe for young kids. I recognize that it's a unique piece and, like all the furniture on site, it's lovely-just not practical for regular use by families or larger parties. There's also no place to eat outside instead, so you're really stuck trying the sit everyone in close proximity.
All in all, a great place for your stay and it's in the heart of Hanalei which is in my opinion, the place to stay on the North Shore and probably the whole island. Great beach, town and restaurants all within a short walk! -

Left on 10/25/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This home is awesome! My husband and I stayed with our 2 year old daughter and our friends who also have a 2 yr old toddler and we had such a wonderful time. The kitchen is big & spacious and there was plenty of space for the little ones to run around. Very child friendly as there is no stairs within the home as it's only the upstairs portion of the house. The bedrooms were spacious, beds were comfortable, bathroooms were spacious and clean. The house is walking distance to the beach which is also great with kids.
The only somewhat negative thing was that the stove elements were a little inconsistent in the heat they would give off, I think they may need replacing. -

San DiegoGreat home base
Left on 09/12/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We stayed in this special little house for 10 great days in august. The finishes are top notch. It's easy walking distance to Hanalei and to the bay. Hanalei is a gem of a town, fun little shops and cool restaurants, the most picturesque church ever. But Kauai is the real star, and this little house is a perfect home base to use to explore its wonders.
The kitchen is nice, and has all the needed stuff. The appliances are a little low end compared to the quality of the unit, but they work fine. As for the one reviewer that complained about the noise of the fans, we found the same thing, but if you just cut the controller back a little from full blast they are quite acceptable. The owner includes two box fans which help tremendously. We needed them as we did have some heat. Granted we were not in Kauai to watch TV but the TV is tiny, at this price point, the owner should spring for a larger screen. We found the Wifi occasionally problematic. A reboot of the router fixed it.
The beds are comfortable for a rental unit. The bathrooms are very nice. The different lanais are enjoyable. Unfortunately, the views while nice, are blocked by other properties, power lines, etc. You can still see waterfalls, and after a heavy rain they are particularly magnificent.
Be aware that the house is in close proximity to other vacation rentals. Folks on vacation can be a little wild. We heard a little of that early in our stay, but for the most part it was quiet. We did notice that a few items were broken in the unit ... the ugly "lady" lamp has a chipped toe that is just sitting there, one barstool has a busted foot rest, and there is a piece of the writing credenza that is busted and laying in the drawer. Also, a few light switches did nothing, probably burned out light bulbs. Didn't matter to us.
Our time in Kauai was special, and this little house in this incredible place made our visit practically perfect. Thank you Hale Ka Mahina!

Left on 08/01/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Hanalei is our favorite location on the island, this home was perfect as we surf Pine Trees and spend the majority of our time on the bay. The bedrooms are on opposites sides of the home which was great as it gave my husband and I a little privacy from our teens. The home is beautifully crafted, loved the mountain veiws from the front deck and the open layout of the home.

Really enjoyed our stay at Hale Ka Mahina. It's a beautiful home, lots of light and fresh air, and great views of the mountains. Close to the beach, and walkable to town.
I was really impressed with the quality of the home-- you can tell a lot of care went into its construction and decoration. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. -

Left on 04/26/2012 for a stay in April 2012
What a wonderful surprise to step into the house and realize that the interior is far superior in person than by viewing the pictures alone. While it is simple, it is very comfortable and perfect for a large family or two couples. The lanais are great and we spent many mornings and evenings enjoying the waterfall views and the sounds of the birds. For my surfing husband and son, the location in town and so close to Pine Trees and the Bay was perfect. Would recommend to anyone looking for beach time, interested in walking to town and just chilling.

We have stayed in many rentals, through vrbo, over the last few years. This was definitely a good one! Na Pali Properties was easy to deal with and the home was beautiful. The furnishings, beds, kitchen and bathrooms were all fabulous. Three lanais to view the gorgeous mountains (and waterfalls!) from. The location was good, about equal walking distance to town and the beach. Just across the highway from the farmers market! The only downside to this rental is that it is not a single residence. It is the top floor of a two story house, with long-term tenants on the ground floor. This might be the quietest rental we've ever stayed in in Hanalei, far enough from the highway not to hear it and though there was some noise from the neighbors, it was during very reasonable hours.

Exceptional service included a visit from the President of Na Pali properties. We were concerned with the amount of propane in the tank of the BarBQ and he came and filled the tank to allay our concerns.
A beautifully designed and built home with lots of space for entertaining.
Easy access to the beach and close to town shopping made this an ideal location.
The only downside for us was finding the location at 11;00 PM in the rain with no street sign on the highway for Mahi Mahi road and poor visibility of the numbers on the driveway. Better markings would be appreciated! -

Our family of four could not have been happier with our stay. The location is perfect, the views of the mountains from the lanais are unforgettable, especially under a full moon, and we found the master bedroom/bathroom very spacious
Our kids loved the huge kitchen counter top with comfy bar stools...plenty of space to spread out all of that fantastic farmer's market fruit!
Can't wait to return.

This is our second stay in Hale Ka Mahina, and we will return there again. The location is the best(close to the beach and town), the views of the mountains are magical, the kitchen is marvelous and the beds comfortable. A few things that could be addressed were: no gas in the BBQ , we couldn't get the DVD player to work, the wireless signal is weak, and it would be fantastic to have a screen for the master bedroom door for better air circulation at night. (It was really warm, in the 90s, this visit). The family downstairs is a delight, and the neighborhood was very quiet at night. What a lovely place to stay!

My wife and I came back for our first anniversary trip. We honeymooned in Kauai in 2010 and fell in love with the island. We wanted to stay in Hanalei so we could walk to the restaurants and shops, and this property was the absolute best location. We woke up and drank our coffee on the lanai facing the waterfall. The property had great bedrooms, 3 amazing lanai's, a large and spacious kitchen and was very clean! We highly recommend staying here as it's a good home base during your exploration of Kauai!

This home is designed for adults who want to experience the natural beauty of Hanalei. Excited about returning to Kauai we wanted to check in right away. Upon arrival we found the house with ease and were immediately impressed with its decore and cleaniness! The lanais are arranged to enjoy the beautiful mountains, waterfalls, and rainbows that surround it. A short walk ends with your feet in the sand at Hanalei Bay! Our neighbors was very friendly and made an effort to tell us about local farmer's markets and events. We were there with our 27 year old daughter and her friend. They found the area ideal for paddle boarding, surfing, and hiking. When do we get to go back? is now our mantra. Thank you for a vacation full of memories!

Austin, TXAmazing house
Left on 09/23/2010 for a stay in September 2010
This place was terrific. An easy walk to the beach, even with a 3-year-old. The construction and fixtures are all top quality. The equipment in the kitchen is sufficient, but isn't anything special. It was really hot inside the first day when we arrived, but that was the only time we missed a/C. There are ceiling fans in every room and things cool off when the sun goes down.
Downstairs neighbors were really friendly. The house next door is also a rental, and we had some bad luck with noise from the large group renting it the weekend we were there. We were so exhausted that it didn't keep us from sleeping, though.
There are a few things you might want to be aware of:
If you have small children, there is no table where they can safely sit. All the chairs are bar height. We just ended up having some "picnics" on the floor. This could also be a problem for older or disabled people. (Those same people should know that you have to go up a flight of stairs to get to the house.)
The grill didn't work when we were there, so don't count on that.
The cleaning policy is more draconian than you might be accustomed to. (e.g., you can't leave clean dishes in the dishwasher). This means you'll need to budget some time on the last day for cleaning, despite the ~$250 cleaning fee. You might want to ask for clarification ahead of time.
We had half a roll of paper towels and one roll of toilet paper in each bathroom. They aren't kidding when they say the have just given you a starter supply. Save yourself a trip to the store and just buy some toilet paper when you stock up on groceries.
There directions say there is a sign at the end of the (long) driveway so you know where to turn, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't. The only sign I saw was for the other rental house down the same driveway. So look for the "Hale Ha Ha" sign.
So those are the minor caveats. It was overall a perfect house for us and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. -

Beautiful unit with modern features, nice funishings and linens and beautiful hardwood floors. Big master suite. Very clean, great location (walk to Hanalei Bay and Hanalei town). All necessary supplies for a house were supplied (diswashing liquid, soap, sponge, etc.), which was very helpful. The downstairs neighbors were very nice as well. Beautiful home with private entrance to the second floor. Loved the kitchen-we do alot of cooking and aside from needing a few extra utensils, it was perfect. For two couples, the bedrooms were at opposite sides of the house so lots of privacy. The living room was large and open. Lots of lanai space for enjoying the outdoors. Nice small tv for those occasions when you wanted to watch. Would have liked a DVD player. The internet connection was decent. No wi fi in other parts of house.

Overall, the home was great. Spacious, great kitchen and living room, great bathrooms and huge closets. It was quiet and a great location. Issues: It needs A/C. The fans provided were worthless and the celing fans were of little help and were noisy. You need at least one of the lanai's screened in. We could not sit on the center lanai with nice furniture for more than five minutes day or night without getting bit by mosquitoes. Parking instructions were not clear. The triple carport was occupied by the tenants below with their two cars at all times and I had to park on the gravel. The lite/fan switches were crazy confusing. Many did nothing, others were not logical for the spot they were in.

one of the nicest places on the island. I would definitely rent this property

Beautiful home! It was actually nicer than the photos. Loved the proximity to the beach and town and the price was right. It works well for two couples since the bedrooms are on opposite sides of the house, although the master bedroom is much nicer (we ended up flipping for it).
A few complaints: The unit downstairs is occupied by the guy who owns Pat's Taqueria (yummy but salty) and he likes to get up really early and cook and play music (with speakers right under the 2nd bedroom). If you get up early this shouldn't be an issue but the 7am music (even Aretha Franklin who I love) was too much for me. I ended up complaining. Also, the rental next door is huge and caters to large families with kids - morning noise from there was an issue for the master bedroom. Last, the lack of window coverings in the bathroom was a bit odd - the neighbors probably got a show more than once.
We absolutely loved the lanais facing the mountains, the kitchen was fabulous and the bbq, although temperamental the first night, was a champ - we ate in every night. Overall, a wonderful place and one I would recommend! -

Stopped in at NaPali Properties to ask for rental as not happy with property we were staying. They gave us keys to this place and two others. We walked in and just loved the beauty, furnishings, view out master bedroom and feel of the space. On top floor of house with family renters on first floor. Loads of privacy, not any issues with renters below. No noisy at all, the usual Hanalei chickens but no road traffic etc. Kitchen wonderfully furnished, had everything we needed plus wonderful little amenities ie beach gear, towels etc. Highly recommend, wonderful lanais (two of them).

Also we like that the living unit was on an upper floor so we could admire the beautiful mountain and waterfall views. I was extremly lucky and grateful to stay here for a month, I wish I was still there! Left on 01/23/2009 for a stay in December 2008
We have stayed in the Hanalei area many times over the years and keep returning to this corner of paradise. Each time we have rented a home from Na Pali Properties and find them to be reasonable and helpful. For example - this time we missed the garbage pick-up and minutes after a cheery phonecall, the trash just 'disappeared'.
The house was beautiful and everything appeared to be new or nearly new. The kitchen was a dream! My family and I loved the many decks - we each had one all to ourselves for a read and a coffee or glass of wine. We did find it odd and awkward that there was no window covering on the large bathroom window which overlooks the neighbor's house - no doubt an oversight which will need to be corrected. The beds were perfect, the linens luxurious, and...location, location, location!

This home was immaculate and gorgeous. It has beautiful wood furnishings, a wonderful gourmet kitchen, and every convenience you could want. It is within a very short walk to the beach and a slightly longer (but still short) walk to town. There is a downstairs tenant so use of the laundry and parking is shared and use of the yard is not private (although with the beach so close it did not matter). There is wired high-speed internet access. I would stay here again with no hesitation and would recommend it to anyone wanting high-end accommodations at a reasonable price.
