Description from the manager
Relax in this cozy cabin, which is located far from any neighbors. Sit on the deck or screened porch of this completely renovated home and watch the dolphins in the surf. You are nestled in the woods, yet take a few steps walk and you are on the beach. Homes at Hunting Island are unique in the fact that they were grandfathered in and no additional homes can be built. Most of the homes are over 40 years old and that is part of their charm. When vacationing at Hunting Island, you are “stepping back in time”, spending time with family and friends, preferring the quiet solace of the forest and beaches and all that nature has to offer...Read more

This was our first visit to Castaways and needless to say, we are hooked!
The Cabin is well stocked and marvelously located right on your own (practically private) beach - in truth we spent most of our time either on the beach or on the screened porch. We only went indoors to use the facilities and sleep. Even the showers could be had outside thanks to the outdoor hot water tap! I even didn't mind preparing meals in the kitchen as I could see the ocean from the sink and stove. I have to admit we used the cable TV to entertain the kids in the mornings while we got a little more sleep.
In one week, we never left the island once and barely explored the trails or Northern side of Hunting. We did beach comb a great deal at low tide and found hundreds of sand dollars! That just show how few people scour the beaches here.
All in all, we can't wait to go back in the hope that the erosion doesn't beat us to it!

was a little disappointed that owners cheaped out on things like garbage bags, dish soap, and basics like that, but in general it was a nice place, clean, etc.
Beds were terrible, but i guess you can't beat the location.

I love it here, but it's not for everyone. The beach erosion is so very sad. There is an element of danger because of the trees. I didn't want to leave. As far as the rental, I had everything I needed. My husband upgraded the outdoor shower head to make it wonderful. The screened porch is a favorite feature. I have said too much, a secret to be kept. I plan to enjoy this rental as long as it exist.

We rented the cabin on the internet, sight unseen. We were ecstatic when we saw it in person. It's totally private. There's a beautiful beach in front and the fishing lagoon in back. The cabin is beautifully furnished and supplied with everything you might need. We felt like we won a get-away for the rich and famous. There was only one minor annoyance: on the master bedroom ceiling at night there's a flashing light, we think from the smoke detector.

This cottage while recently updated is the rustic remains of how Hunting Island's cabin life used to be. Take advantage while you can!

Charlotte, NCA wonderful way to experience the coast in its unspoiled, natura
Left on 01/06/2012 for a stay in December 2011
We have been going to Hunting Island for 15 years, 11 of them being during the New Year's holiday. We have seen the beach change over the 15 years, and most of the houses are gone. It is an unbelievable beach and park and we will be so sad if we can no longer find places to rent there.
The cottage was really nice and well maintained. The ocean facing porch was so wonderful and inviting. We loved our stay there and have always admired the cottage when we stayed in the park.
Our only complaint was that the kitchen was not well stocked. It is a major trip back into town to purchase anything, it would have been nice to have had some salt and pepper, foil, things that you tend to forget to buy. They could use some bakeware (cookie sheets, casserole dishes).
The cabin was warm, clean, and very comfortable. We would love to return next year!! -

Service was fantastic, the home was cozy and secluded, loved the glass doors which provided continual viewing of sunrises and the ocean. The location could not possibly have been better. Our only regret is that we had to leave.

My bride and I had a wonderful week on Hunting Island. We thought we would go into Beaufort for dinner, but we never left the island the entire week. My only critique would be the need for some written instructions to unravel the mystery of satellite television.
Looking forward to another week next year if Mother Nature is kind enough to allow the house to remain in the face of the erosion. -

Hunting Island is an amazing place to vacation, and absolutel worth a visit for anyone looking for a gorgeous beach without all the crowds and commotion of the east coast's more popular vacation destinations..
Castaways Cottage was a really comfortable stay for four of us - the house is tucked into the woods, but located just a stone's throw from the ocean. It makes the "ocean front homes" at beaches like Nags Head or Virginia Beach seem like they're a positive HAUL to the ocean! The house itself is cozy and well stocked, the screened in porch is a great place to sit and watch the waves. Truthfully you couldn't do better than to spend a week here - you won't regret a minute of it. -

The setting was awesome, the whole "cottage in the woods but just steps from the beach" was unbelievable, beach perfect, days sunny even though the whole east coast seemed to socked in with rain, on Wednesday we didn't see anyone else on the beach all day(! Loved it!), the cottage was all we had hoped for and more.
To sum up, in our 35+ years of annual beach vacations, this was our favorite location and we agreed that it was our most peaceful, restful one. -

Baltimore, MDI selfishly want to keep it our secret place!
Left on 10/01/2009 for a stay in March 2009
I almost fear it will be self-defeating to rave about Castaway to the extent that I want to! I don't want availability to become any more of an issue than it already is...We have stayed amongst 3 of the homes on Hunting Island every year for the past 7 or 8 years. My husband and I got engaged at Driftwood, honeymooned at Castaway, took our dogs on their first official beach vacation to dog friendly Tide View and this year brought our 1 year old daughter to Castaway!
Castaway has every modern amenity you could want, dishwasher, washer/dryer, updated bathrooms etc. but still has maintained the original rustic charm that makes it such a special beach cottage. The ocean is right at your front door, the lagoon at your backdoor and civilization is a comfortable 20 or 30 minutes away. You are immersed in the stunning wildlife that surrounds this secluded paradise. It's so beautiful to see the raccoons and deer come out at dusk...As residents of Baltimore City it gives our daughter the opportunity to see them in their nature habitat as the beautiful creatures that they are. You are fully aware that we humans are visitors on this island.
The screened-in porch is priceless when vacationing in this low country maritime forest...the porch rocking chairs are just one of many special touches that make our stay at Castaway that much more memorable. Another reason we especially love the area is the proximity to both Savannah and Charleston, if on the off chance you feel the need to leave the island and sightsee.
My big Hunting Island joke is ?I have the best body on the beach because I'm the only body on the beach!? The only drawback with Castaway and Hunting Island is that once you've been there, nowhere else seems good enough! We stop at Publix on our way on to the Island and relish every beautiful moment we are privileged to be there.
Now let me look at the availability calendar and make our reservations for 2010?.

We are hesitant to write a review - because we don't want the secret to get
out! Our stay at the Castaways Cottage on Hunting Island was amazing. The
cottage was very comfortable and we couldn't believe our eyes when we saw
the location - literally, a few steps from a beautiful, secluded beach. It is rare
to get to spend time in such a gorgeous natural setting, without actually
making do in a tent! We spent mornings wandering the beach ,looking for
birds, and evenings listening to the ocean right outside our windows. We
highly recommend the area and the Castaways cottage for anyone who wants
or needs to see what a beach is like without all of the commercialism and
development that have taken over so many of our beaches. We certainly hope
to spend time there, again. -

I have been looking for a vacation place like this for years. The cottage has privacy and a sense of tranquility. The view is awsome. It is like your on Giligans island!
If you want malls, tourist traps, to be seen and party with crowds AKA Myrtle Beach.. Panama City.
this place is not for you.
If you want a place that you can check out from daily grind, lower your blood pressure and relax, this is it.
I am hesitant to tell people because this is so special.

The folks at Seaside Getaways were very accomodating and the Castaways cottage was clean and roomy with a great view of the beach from the screened-in porch. The house was well-equipped and had all the amenities of home. At times it seemed like we had the beach all to ourselves. We enjoyed fishing and crabbing on Hunting Island and especially the long walks on the beach looking for shells and watching the dolpins in the surf. The kayaking in the lagoon was great!
