Japonica Cottage is an ideal one bedroom self catering holiday cottage for relaxing peaceful holidays, romantic breaks, short breaks and weekend breaks for couples or friends sharing.
This cottage looks out onto a small courtyard area which in turn looks out towards a central stone circle within the larger courtyard formed by the cottages and Downe House. The small courtyard area is gravelled and bounded by a low stone wall with garden table and chairs.

Japonica is set withing a beautiful courtyard formed by a group of old stone barns which have been lovingly converted to provide luxury self cateing cottages. Most of the cottages are one bedroom and the ambiance of all of the cottages is quiet, peaceful, perfect rest and repose. Deliciously romantic Japonica is located one mile from the Atlantic going west, one mile going north and three miles going west.

Myself and my granddaughter had a week of pure indulgence and relaxation in japonica cottage .Champagne and chocolates were awaiting us when we arrived.The cottage was spotless , well equipped and exremely comfortable.Meals were delivered fresh to our cottage daily ,the choice and quality were excellent all homemade and delicious.The therapies were sheer indulgence and the therapists made us feel very relaxed and special .relaxing in the lounge between therapies with lovely views of the atlantic and surrounding areas was outstanding. well what can i say about the owners Jeremy and Lynda ,they collected us from bideford at the begining of our stay and then dropped us off in barnstaple on the way home they are very proffesional and really srive to make sure their guests have a truly unique experience and they certainly succeed .If you want to see what they offer just look on their web site as what you see is what you get .We would recommend a stay at downe we guarantee you will not be dissapointed.

We were greeted like old friends on arrival by Jeremy,even though we were over an hour earlier than we should have been.Jeremy showed us around Japonica cottage and told us where everything could be located.The Cottage was very clean and fresh a real home from home,also very well equipped.Also on sight is a wonderful Spa,we were able to have exclusive use for one hour at a very reasonable cost.Hartland is truely a gem in North Devon and a visit to Hartland Quay for stunning views is a must.Downe cottages and Spa is the best place we have stayed in North Devon.

This was a great break. The cottage was comfortable & warm with a very good bed and superb shower! The hot stone massage was really sensational - totally relaxing but what really stood out was the excellent food. Delicious, with a really home cooked feel - great portion sizes & the home grown salad just topped it off perfectly. We felt like we had a week away, not a weekend! The spa facilities were good and the sauna & steam was great temperature and never over full. The owners clearly cared a lot about how good a time we had and wanted to do everything they could. Highly recommended!

Driving true Cottage is bit night mare my GPS doesn't work But... don`t worry people over there are very2 friendly and they are all know this Place. after a day in there you know the easy way to get out and browse ring the country
When you come to the parking area it was amazing bird are singing flower was blooming weather wise is excellent what else you wanted more, BTW Spa is the best after driving for many hours my muscle need a treat. you never guest this place is there for you waiting for relax and enjoyed the life of living in country side.

My mother needed some well deserved time away from the hustle and bustle of city life and Downe Health Spa & Cottages was perfect for this.
She took me along with her for four days of pampering and relaxation. Right from when we arrived, we were well catered for by Jeremy and Linda, who were friendly, welcoming and extremely helpful.
There is varied selection of treatments to choose from and you are guaranteed to feel well pampered at the end of them. My mother particularly enjoyed the steam room, which she stated was "divine".
The cottage in which we stayed, Japonica, was clean, neat and furnished to a high standard, as well as surprisingly well stocked. Digital tv is available, but my mother and I were too busy taking long walks around the area and soaking in the beautiful scenery to watch tv!
Overall, the experience was a thoroughly enjoyable and peaceful one. If you are looking for break away from your busy life, or just a short vacation in a scenic, rural location by the sea, Downe is the place for you.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude towards Jeremy and Linda, who made our arrival and departure hassle free by picking us from and dropping us back at the station, as we came by train. -

a family occasion with no previous experience of this type of accommadation. Enjoyed the comfort of the lodge and the catering, everything provided showing a lot of forethought and care. Enjoyed meeting various members of the family who were seperately housed in their own lodges.
