Just a block from the bluff of the Mississippi River and a short walk along the river bluff to historic Downtown Hastings, this penthouse luxury condo (renovated in 2008) welcomes guests.Its private elevator opens into a 15 x 14 rooftop solarium complete with heated floors and gas fireplace. Then the gourmet kitchen features a copper ceiling and details you would expect in an 1880 National Register mansion. Two architecturally amazing bedrooms, one with a 27 foot steeple and the other with a full loft and skylight above the bed sleeps from 4 to 10. Once in a while if condo is available we may rent a weekend at the rate of $400 per night but it would not include breakfast at our "sister" property.

We stayed in the Thorwood penthouse and had a fabulous time...third floor with lots of room and an awesome kitchen which we put to good use. Had two fourteen year old girls with us and even they were impressed which is saying a lot!!! The beds were comfortable, the showers were nice (rain shower head was great!) and Pam was gracious and welcoming. They gave us delicious cookies they bake at their other location, a B&B called the Rosewood and we also toured there....it is beautiful too! The penthouse has a private elevator and a beautiful solarium with a fireplace that I can't wait to use some time in the winter! Also a fireplace in the living room and one of the bedrooms...all in all it is homey and spacious and comes highly recommended!!

The Thorwood Inn is like no place I have ever stayed. We were thoroughly impressed with how wonderful it was both in size, character, and detail. My husband and I took our 6 children to stay in the Lumber Baron portion and it was relaxing with it's beautiful yet simple decor. We enjoyed learning about the history of the building. The kids loved the complimentary cookies and ice cream! It was a 2 level unit with an open staircase leading to 3 bedrooms, 2 that had fireplaces. There were 3 bathrooms, an elevator, a total of 4 fireplaces in the home, a full kitchen with wine fridge, Large TV/DVD in living room, an enormous double size plus jacuzzi tub in the Master bathroom, a couple outdoor porch area's with chairs/table, a large round dining room table to fit at least 8-10 people, and the list goes on. The owners Pam and Dick are delightful people and are very personable. They show pride in ownership and they have a right to be proud. This place is amazing.
We also stayed a month later, in March, in the Thorwood Penthouse Condo section of the home. That is the 3rd floor of the home with an additional loft bedroom in it. There is a private entrance via steps or elevator for this Condo and it is equally as appealing to stay at. It has 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4, has 2 bathrooms-2 showers and an antique soaker tub, a full gourmet kitchen with pantry, TV/DVD in living room, lovely Master bedroom w/attached bathroom, and our favorite part of all, the rooftop solarium, a completely glass enclosed room including a gas fireplace! We got to sit in the treetop room, watch the squirrels run from branch to branch and enjoyed nature from our safe haven. I would imagine winter, spring, summer, or fall this room would be the most desired location for gathering with friends or family on your getaway. Whether you have a group of 4 or a group of 10, either one of these units would be a wonderful choice. I look forward to the opportunity to go there again, with or without the children but I'm sure they'd love to come back with us since they too, throughly enjoyed the stay.Response from Pamela Thorsen - 05/16/2012

What a joy and a blessing to serve this lovely family. We so appreciate the detailed description too but they missed one fireplace !. Easy to do. There are FIVE-- one in the front parlor, one in the dining room two in the master suite(one of those in the en suite bath) and one in the second bedroom. Three are gas and two are wood burning. That is why it is a great retreat in the winter as well. It is such a joy to have a family enjoy this space much as it was originally enjoyed back in 1880 --but with a few important updates. Then how lucky could we be to have them back for the Penthouse just a month later.! . .
