Gloucester, UKStunning house in a stunning location!!
Left on 09/17/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We stayed in La Grange from 3rd to 18 august. Quite simply, this is a stunning house in a beautiful location, with friendly and helpful owners and loads for the kids to do.
Firstly, the house had ample space for 4 adults and 4 children, with a massive salon/dining area which is the hub of the house. The mezzanine floor with TV, DVD player and games was thoroughly enjoyed by the children and grown ups. The pool area is fab with lots of sunshine, a big round table on the terrace (big enough to seat 10!) and 2 Bbq's. The pool was hardly chlorinated but cleaned daily by John, so no sore red eyes!
John and Jo live on site but were completely unobstrusive. However, when we needed help in getting a doctors appointment on a Saturday, they were brilliant at organising it for us.
The location is perfect. Lots of space to roam around, woods to walk in, fields to play in and that's just John and Jo's land! It is quite literally a lovely 10 minute walk downhill to a pretty French village which has a bakers ( fabulous bread and lemon tarts!), a village store and 2 lovely restaurants...one of which is on the riverbank.
The surrounding area was a real treat. There is virtually a traditional French market everyday in some nearby village or town and canoeing can be found everywhere, including the village. Supermarkets are a short drive away.
Wouldn't hesitate to book again or recommend La Grange to anyone...it is simply beautiful.

We spent two wonderful weeks at this house. Week one, the weather was variable, with some heavy rain but it didn't matter, the house was so cost and well equipped that we were very content to relax indoors.
The second week was much warmer and we were able to enjoy the pool, the patio area ( great Bbqs and furniture) and the surroundings.
This was by far the most comfortable and well equipped house that we have ever rented, located in a very unspoilt part of rural France, yet within easy walking of a small village.

Les Taloches is a fabulous, spacious and beautifully decorated barn conversion with a great pool on the edge of a quaint typically "French" village which makes for a really lovely relaxing holiday. I spent a week here with my family to celebrate my parents wedding anniversary and we couldn't have asked for much more. Jo and John have taken great care to ensure that the house has everything you could need and feels lived in yet special and the use of bikes was a good touch. All in all a gorgeous pace in an unspoilt and charming part of France.

Attractive house, very well appointed with high standard of cleanliness. The grounds were extensive & beautifully kept with a lovely pool that was kept in an immaculate state by Jo & John the owners. They were very welcoming & helpful, although they lived within the grounds they kept a discreet distance, but were only too happy to advise on matters of restaurants, shops & other amenities. The house is ideal for families with children of all ages as games equipment such as croquet, badminton , table tennis, boules, bicycles were provided as well as toddler trikes, trains & cars etc; There is also a plentiful supply of reading material. Overall it is a very comfortable house with a 10 minute walk to the small village which has a couple of shops & a bar. The situation is good for exploring the Perigord region.

Talk about wow factor! We all gasped with delight as we took in the property, pool, and space available, on arrival. Some of us with an itinerary encompassing several outings a day, instead remained at home, reading, hiking, swimming, cooking, playing darts, table tennis, badminton. We’re talking adults here. With the children even the 10-minute walk down to the village for the daily croissant fix (fantastic croissants too) at the bakery had to be negotiated, so happy were they just to stay at Les Taloches. Jo and John seem to have considered every contingency, so there’s firewood for the fires, every kind of utensil you could ask for in the kitchen including copper-bottomed pans, a bar area outside, a huge play area, even cleared paths within their own woods. Those woods are so lovely too, and the villages they lead to! Every room looks on to something interesting to view, though with shutters closed, rooms themselves are gorgeous, many en suite.
Most of my guests (well, there’s adequate space for 12!) intend now to book in for themselves next year.Response from John and Josephine Sturges - 07/22/2012

Wonderful for families. Swimming, cycling to collect croissants and playing in the grounds. We also liked the record player and vast collection of records and books. Friendly welcome in the village shops and cafes.

Having stayed in La Grange twice during the last few years, it's about time we got round to posting some comments, because we had such a fabulous time there. All the rooms are full of lovely antique furniture, which John told us they'd mostly picked up at French auctions. On both occasions, everything about the place was attractive and spotlessly clean. The stone courtyard it opens out to on one side is lovely, and there's the pool on the other, so we could spend some of our time either swimming, or just chilling out with a bottle of wine.
There's a big wood at the top of a steep pasture rising up from the house, and from up there we could see down to the village just down in the valley and very walkable. It was easy to imagine that the view could hardly have changed for centuries, especially when the sound of the church bells came drifting over the fields and trees.
John and Jo are really friendly and helpful. They didn't appear to mind how many times we knocked on their door to ask what must have often been daft questions, especially how to ask for the sort of things in French that guide books don't tell you. And they certainly know their local restaurants!
The countryside around Toutoirac is lovely and we never ran out of places to visit, like the chateau at Hautefort, and the amazing caves in Tourtoirac itself. When we went last, in 2010, the caves had only just been opened to the public and we enjoyed them even more than the ones at Lascaux.
We definitely plan to go back to Les Taloches again. -

LondonLa Grange - lovely relaxing holiday
Left on 11/27/2011 for a stay in July 2011
We were a group of 8 adults and had a marvellous holiday at La Grange. The pictures on the web are absolutely as it was and the house itself is very grand and comfortable with a huge living area and open fires (lovely to look out even if we didn't use it as the weather was great!). We had dinner most nights outside but had a couple of fun evenings around the huge dining table playing card games. We loved lounging by the pool but it was very easy to wander off through the woods for a ramble or stroll down to the bar. We just about managed to do some sight-seeing and there was plenty to see - a number of markets and a couple of big castles were on our list and a canoe trip for some of us. I can thoroughly recommend La Grange for a holiday and would love to return.

We had a wonderful time in this spacious barn conversion. The owners John and Jo gave us a warm welcome. The bread from the shop in the village was delicious. The cosy lounge upstairs was as popular as the large farmhouse kitchen. The very private and large pool was terrific for swimming and water activities when the sun got too hot to sit in. Canoeing on the Dordogne was a 1 hour drive but was great fun.

La Grange is a spacious, well equiped family home in a gorgeous location. Our party was made up of two families with five children ranging in ages from 3 to 14 and we all had a great time! When we could separate the children from the pool, they enjoyed the large play area and games room as well as the board games in the house .The adults loved the large range of vinyl and tapes which led to a few retro music evenings! It is very possible to spend your whole holiday within the home and grounds only leaving to stock up on the essentials of chocolate twists, croissants, bread, cheese and wine!!! We did tear ourselves away to visit the Chateaux in Hautefort and a morning market as well as a couple of local restaurants. A car is essential if you wish to explore as taxis are very expensive, and although the local village is nice (it has the basics and very nice butcher)it is very small, so you will need to get in a car to stock up on a wider range of groceries. Finally to our hosts John and Jo who could not do enough to help, they arranged restaurant bookings, provided directions and advice on the area ,as well as a stock of Dvds for the children and a freshly cleaned pool each day! If you are looking for complete relaxation this is the place for you, thank you!!!
