Getting the most out of Molokai

Left on 04/12/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We have provided some tips on getting the most out of your stay.

We stayed in the Molokai studio at Hale Ko’olau for five nights, so that we could explore Oahu before going to a conference in Honolulu. This review assumes that you are looking for a self-catering “base camp”, not a luxury hotel. I’ve given it plenty of stars because it is ideal for this purpose, and it is in a location that is both lovely and convenient.

The property itself is about 75 minutes from the airport – download the excellent driving instructions from their website and you will easily find this – even at night. It’s on the main road on the east coast so once you find that road it’s simple to locate. There are a row of properties that lie between the road and the beach. Road is a bit noisy in Molokai because that building is closest to the road. You can drive from here to the attractions near Honolulu, but you would want to avoid the rush hour. Basically, it is a great place for exploring all of Oahu outside of the big city and the east coast.

The property is managed by a lovely group of people, who made us feel very welcome and were very helpful.

The beach is OK, but you’ll probably want to walk or drive a short distance to some other beaches. But it’s very nice to be on the local beach any time of day, especially for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. Most of the properties in this complex are right on the beach – Molokai is set back so you only get a partial ocean view. There is a laundry on site, as well as hot tubs. Barbecues available (buy your own coals). They will rent you a wide range of beach toys – everything from chairs to kayaks. Parking is off-road but a bit tight.

Molokai was well equipped. Good size bathroom (great shower) – bring your own shampoo. Kitchen is well equipped with fridge, stove, microwave, pots and pans, dishes, mugs, cutlery, utensils. They supply dish soap and coffee filters, but you supply everything else. A little table for two. Main room has comfortable bed, desk, TV and sliding doors that open to your own patio. Regular sized closet with wall safe (costs extra to rent this). No maid service, so make your own bed and do your own dishes.

You are in the tropics, so you have to be prepared for a few insects. A simple way to avoid any problems is to wash your dishes and keep food in the fridge. There were a few little ants around, but they didn’t bother us.

You are in a small town, so it is easy to get groceries etc. Supermarket less than a mile north has everything, including beer and wine. There is a fancier supermarket a couple of miles further north in a little strip mall but it doesn’t have beer and wine and doesn't open Sunday. The strip mall has some fast food outlets. Plenty of little restaurants in the area. There is a 7-11 very close by open 24 hours. Polynesian cultural center a few miles up the road.

We loved exploring Oahu from this location, and didn’t spend much time on the property during the day. Nearby are some very nice beaches – Hau’ula beach is walking distance, and there is a beautiful state recreation area a couple of miles north.

Continuing north and northwest you hit a whole series of amazing beaches after Turtle Bay, many too rough for swimming, but some OK when it’s not too windy. Nice little towns.
Our favourite places away from south Oahu were:
Walk from Mokule’ia beach park to Ke-‘ena Point and make sure you visit the nature reserve right at the end of the point
      The town of Hale-iwa.
      Botanical gardens at Waimea.
      Giovanni’s shrimp truck
The hiking loop in Hau’ula – beautiful views.

nice place to stay if you are not planning to visit Honolulu on

Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in September 2012

Nice location located between north shore and Honolulu. Due to proximity of mountains, this location has a lot of clouds and wind but nice beaches are close by.

Apartment is as described on the web-site picture. Hostess are nice and accommodating. Grocery store is very close and convenient.

Having morning coffee at the beach (30ft away) is relaxing but the beach is so-so for swimming. There are a lot of crabs on the beach and waves can be strong at times.

The down side is the proximity of the road that can be very noisy if you plan to sleep with an open windows. For this reason I would grade this place with 4 stars.

Overall, I would recommend this place.

Aloha to our wonderful guest for their kind words. We are very happy to hear they enjoyed their stay with us.

As with many if not most of the rentals and homes on the North Shore area, the only accessible road to the area is Kamehameha Hwy, which also hugs the coastline most of the way. Therefore, road noise is a part of the "North Shore" experience.

We try as best to block it out with our fence and foliage, which helps dim the noise a lot more.

      Mahalo nui loa!

Quaint, cozy and clean. Friendly, attentive staff.

The studio was perfect for the two of us and was exactly as presented in the pictures. The ocean waves and breeze were a wonderful compliment to our morning coffee in the loungers and dinner in the courtyard. Hale Ko-olau was in a location that enabled us to travel around the windward coast and north shore easily. We did not spend any time there during the day, however, it was a very clean and cozy place to return to at the end of our activity-filled days, to cook our meals, have a quick hot tub and rest our heads. The staff were very friendly and responded to all of our questions very promptly, before, during and after our stay.

      Disappointing Stay

Left on 01/16/2012 for a stay in December 2011

My husband, three children, their spouses and one 8 month old grandson spent Christmas week in Hauula, Oahu. The three couples shared the beautiful beach house (Nani Kai Hola - see review) and my husband and I rented the Molokai, a small studio apartment about 300 feet walk from the beach house. It was a huge disappointment. It is located behind a two story home which made our studio very dark and dingy feeling. That, on top of many dark stormy days would have made for a very depressing stay had we not had the 2nd beach house to spend our time. There was a damp smell permeating the studio which added to our disappointment. It definitely was not the kind of place you would want to spend any time in. There was a double bed which has seen better days, a small round wooden table and two side chairs, which, if both were around the table, would have made going to the bathroom difficult. The shower had decent water pressure and plenty of hot water and the 4 bath towels were large and fluffy. We only used the coffee pot, as we did all our cooking and eating at the larger beach house. There was a plastic table and four chairs on the little lanai, but there was no privacy, as the communal hot tub and grills were between the patio and the two story home. We had a tiny sliver view of the ocean only. The sliding doors to the lanai did not have a screen so I was not able to sleep with the door open so I could hear the ocean. We paid $1,000 for the week we were there. There were other homes in the compound that had better views.

We are very sorry to hear that these guests did not enjoy their stay with us. We strive to provide comfortable and quality rentals for visitors to enjoy their stay in the islands away from it all.

This guest rented our smallest suite, a 350 sq. ft. studio 80 feet from the ocean's edge with ocean views. The suite sits directly under the canopy of our mature beach almond tree, which adds to the ambiance and lush green beauty of our property, but makes the suite a little darker than some other suites. As the suite does sit right next to the ocean, with no road in-between, the air may be a little damp due to moisture and sea spray in the air. However, the guest's choice not to stay in the rental is her's alone. We've had MANY guests who have stayed in this suite all day just lounging and relaxing on their vacation. The bed inside of the suite is a 3 year-old Sealy Posturepedic Pillowtop Queen-size bed, not a double bed. We actually bought the bed at the same time as those located in the other home she rented with us and no complaints were made of those.

As the suite is only 350 sq. ft. there is only so much furniture we can fit in the suite with the full kitchen, television and entertainment center and queen-size bed and full-size kitchen.

Our on-site office is located right next to this suite and the guest did come over once as there was an issue with her parking space. But, as soon as she told us, we took care of the problem quickly and to her satisfaction. We encourage all of our guests to stop by or call us with any questions or concerns, and cannot solve any problems if we are not told about them.

Our guests book with us knowing our four shared hot tubs, oceanfront lounge areas, and BBQ areas are all common areas. Unlike hotels where you share one area of each of these things, we have multiple areas of each for our guests to enjoy and never have any problems with guests feeling uncomfortable or being intruded.

Thank you to our guests for staying with us and we hope they enjoy their next visit to the islands.

Loved it...quiet..right on beach..away from tourist areas!

Left on 05/20/2011 for a stay in September 2010

Great area of Oahu close to Sunset beach & Northern end of Island. House was right on beach..beautiful! Only downside was beach was rocky but there are so many other nice beaches nearby wasn't an issue with us. Nice local places to eat and shop. Nice, clean studio apartment. Booked from home computer and process was easy to do! First time in a "vacation rental" and would definitely do it again! There was an employee on property and was helpful when I had questions yet let us enjoy our stay without intruding at all! Would recommend these properties to other Tripadvisor members. If you want to 'chillax", this is the place!
