Very nice rental house
Left on 01/14/2013 for a stay in January 2013
Have just come back from 4 nights at Hale Malu Wahi on the Big Island. It was overall a very good experience. There were 6 of us - 2 adults, 4 children (10-16 yrs). The instructions to find the house were excellent, and the house was very well set up for a family. The kitchen was well supplied with all the utensils you could need. If there had to be a criticism, it would be that there seemed to be no hot water from the kitchen sink, requiring jugs of water to be boiled to do the dishes - dishwasher didn't work well. We couldn't find the light switch for the dining area, but maybe that was just us. The pool was fantastic, and was frequently used.
The location was great, only a short drive to a local supermarket, and about 30 mins or less from the airport. The road is narrow for the large people mover we required, but there was little traffic.
If we were going back to the Big Island, I would definitely stay at this house again. -

We loved being together, four generations. Lots of playing enjoyed by the grandkids. Good kitchen for making meals, which we shared the duties.

Tucson, AZ, United StatesA welcoming rural setting with gorgeous sunsets and views
Left on 04/22/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Malu Wahi was our home for 18 days beginning on 18 March 2012. Perfect for a 50th wedding anniversary celebration that included 4-6 adults and 2-4 children and, with five spacious bedrooms, sufficient room for all.
Malu Wahi is located on the side of a small mountain away from tourist areas but conveniently located minutes from Keahou Shopping Center, only 15-20 minutes from several beaches, Walmart, Sports Authority, Costco (cheapest for groceries and gas)and less than 30 minutes from the Kona Airport. Thus, you can stay away from regular tourist spots and enjoy a true Hawaiian atmosphere in a rural setting.
The house is spacious and well-equipped with everything including WI-Fi access, TV/DVD, safe, lovely pool, beach and pool gear, porch swing for viewing sunsets or star gazing)and cute little green Geckos in residence.
A favorite activity was strolling along Walu Road through a natural "botanical garden" of trees, ornamentals, shrubs, flowers and even wild chickens and turkeys.
From the beginning, the staff at Kona Coast Vacations were outstanding in making us feel like we were at the top of their list of renters. Responsive, helpful, patient and true representatives of the spirit of Aloha. A heartfelt Mahalo to Lorrie and Ted---we won't wait another 50 years to return! -

Fresno, CAGREAT COASTLINE VIEWS, UNIQUE LOCATION
Left on 01/20/2011 for a stay in January 2011
I had actually stayed at a different location on Walua Road about 5 years ago, and liked the view and property there also, although this one was bigger and had a better lanai with a great panoramic view. The house was fine, but really did not have the qualities to give it five stars. It was darker inside than the artist depiction, and it was not easy to get enough light to read easily. Although the bedrooms were good size, and the beds comfortable, there were not the sort of amenities I have experienced in other similar quality rentals. FOr example, the largest bedroom had no closet, and the bathroom was tiny, cramped, and had very cheap materials, with unmatched wallpaper seams. It was great that they had a solar water heater, but we should've been advised about how to turn on the regular water heater as we had cold showers for two days due to the continuous lack of sun--until we called management and got the necessary information to turn on the timed heater. We only had 6 people, so the space was more than adequate; if we had had 10, it would have been crowded a bit.
We especially enjoyed the lanai and the views from the lanai and deck--too bad there weren't more sunsets to enjoy and toast. The kitchen was quite well stocked with pots, pans and cooking items, and the barbecue was handy and worked well. -

House was too hot and there were lizards all over inside. We bought a fan for the house to try to cool it down.

Palo Alto, CAExcellent trip
Left on 03/25/2009 for a stay in March 2009
Everything was great. We only had a couple of minor complaints.
First, I'm not sure if it was possible, however the pool should have been heated. Second, the only key that seemed to work on the front door was the one in the lock box, and third, the alarm went off right when we got there and we didn't have the code to turn it back on. -

One of our only problems wsa that we were not notified that there was an alram system, and thus did not know how to disengage it or turn it on. Given that there was a burglary at this location in 2005, that would have been good infomration. Also, the water heater was not turned on. It took us several days to figure out where it was and that it was turned off.
Otherwise this was a great property. Perfect for families. -

Hale Malu Wahi is a wonderful place to escape. The roosters crowing and turkeys gobling wake you every morning. Neighboring houses are visible only from property perimiter. You can hear sounds from the hiway below but cannot see it. We would use this property again. The street in front is very winding and is used by many walkers and a few joggers. However, because of the location of the house you cannot see them and they can't see you.

The house was huge. It had lots of privacy. The back porch view was wonderful. You could see the ocean and the sunsets. It also had a swing to sit on. The pool was of decent size and was fun to play and lounge in.

Every expectation we had for our vacation was met and exceeded! The location was beautiful and private. We have high hopes of making use of this property again. This was a much needed vacation for our family and was the best ever! Our daughter learned to swim in the pool since she was in it every single minute she could be... Thank you so much for the great memories!
