Description from the owner

The Rockery Suite is one of only six tastefully appointed apartments in an impressive building called Sawrey Knotts in the village of Far Sawrey in the English Lake District. Sawrey Knotts is right in the heart of Beatrix Potter country, and within walking distance of the writer’s famous home and museum at nearby Near Sawrey. You will need a car for your holiday.

Sawrey Knotts retains the feel of a country house with the main front door opening into a large entrance hall with winding staircase. The house is built into the rocky hillside with the cosy one bedroom Rockery Suite tucked away at the rear of the building, looking up to...Read more

In the English Lake District. In the village of Far Sawrey, 1 mile up the hill to the west side of Lake Windermere from the Bowness-on-Windermere chain ferry, 3 miles to the east of Hawkshead and 7 miles to the south of Ambleside. So you will need a car.

PLEASE NOTE: The map on this website does not show the location of our country house Sawrey Knotts, but of the nearest sizable village - Hawkshead - 3 miles away. This is because few visitors to FlipKey will have heard of our small village of Far Sawrey. You/they are therefore more likely to be searching for properties in or near Hawkshead - a more familiar name. If you conduct your own Google search ( http://maps.google.co.uk/ ) using Sawrey Knotts' postcode LA22 0LG you will see its exact location in the village of Far Sawrey.

Walk from the door up onto Claife Heights with its dramatic views, or relax in the spacious gardens with a glass of wine, a good book, and the beautiful scenery. Nearby there are countless walks varying from easy short level walks to spectacular mountain climbs.

Lovely, peaceful apartment in a wonderful location.

Left on 04/08/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We arrived at the apartment to be greeted by a deer on the drive. The Rockery Suite was perfect for us, beautifully decorated and cosy. We loved the sitting room with its beautiful open fire. The stairs proved very difficult for our ageing dog but thankfully there is a rear access he could use. The house, Sawrey Knotts, is lovely and peaceful - its so quiet we really felt as if we were the only ones there. This apartment has been one of the best we have stayed in over the past 30 years and we are already discussing a return visit.

      Everything you need... and more!

Left on 03/28/2013 for a stay in March 2013

It's a lovely place to hide from everyday hustle! Equipped with everything your heart desires, the Rockery Suite is pure comfort - so good that you find it hard to leave - but its a pleasure to come back to after a long days walk. Good location with plenty to do in the surrounding areas, such as walks to Wray Castle alongside lake Windermere, Grizedale forest (and High Man), Hawkshead and much more. Pubs nearby, so is Beatrix Potters' former home, Hill Top.
      A place to revisit!

      An ideal escape.

Left on 02/19/2013 for a stay in February 2013

The Rockery Suite is a lovely, welcoming apartment nestling in the hills between Windermere and Esthwaite Water. It is clean, comfortable and quiet - an ideal escape from the rat-race and the urban sprawl of modern life.

The apartment has everything that you would want (at least it had everything that I wanted!), including a good sized comfortable bed and free logs and kindling for a roaring log fire. Alas, in my case it was only a roaring kindling fire! Though that is a reflection on my fire laying abilities rather than a fault of the apartment.

There's a handy pub just 3 minutes walk away in Far Sawrey and one 10 minutes walk away in Near Sawrey. Indeed, the one in Near Sawrey, The Tower Bank arms is an ideal resting spot for those of you whose partner insists on visiting Beatrix Potters house around the corner, something that I have done on more than one occasion. Handy for the ferry, only 3 minute drive (20 minute walk - foot passengers only 50p) and the delights of Bowness and Windermere. Hawkshead, where Wordsworth attended school is only 10 minutes by car, an hour by foot; a pleasant walk when it's fine, combine it with a climb up Latterbarrow for some magnificent views, though not so nice in the snow, rain, sleet and various combinations of the same.

The week fairly sped by and I was sorry to leave, but I left safe in the knowledge that I will be back.

      The perfect New Year hideaway

Left on 01/19/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We wanted a New Year retreat from it all, in our favourite mountain home. We got more than we thought possible. The Suite is very comfortable, the service excellent and friendly (Helga, the House Keeper, is a treasure!) and the log fire to die for when the wind howls and the rain batters down. We did manage to get out for some walks and found several good ones close by, and some very good pubs all within a short range. 'Unable to stay unwilling to leave'! We will be back.

      Two very relaxing weeks

Left on 10/21/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We have just returned from a two week stay in the Rockery Suite in Far Sawrey

It is a very compact little suite, the living room and the the bedroom are generously sized rooms but the kitchen is quite compact, more than adequate, but there is not a lot of space.

There are lots of great walks from the door and the laundry room is well appionted if it gets a bit wet.

We had one problem while we were there which was dealt with promptly and efficiently.

What a lovely house and The Rockery Suite was so homely.

Left on 07/18/2012 for a stay in July 2012

This was my first stay in the lakes and I had a fantatic time. The Rockery Suite is located in such a beautiful and convenient position. It has good facilities and the lounge feels very spacious and there is an amazing selection of Dvd's and videos. I really loved staying here.

      beautiful, relaxing and peaceful retreat

Left on 05/24/2012 for a stay in January 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed here in February to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We were not disappointed. The Rockery Suite is set in beautiful countryside with beautiful views. The suite was well equipped with everything you would need for a holiday home(including a library full of books and Dvd's) and exceptionally clean. After long walks, coming home to a cozy living room with a roaring log fire topped off every day. The local villiages are a short drive away and there are numerous pubs/resturants dotted about serving great food. I would definitley recommend staying here and we can't wait to come back in the future.

      A great escape.

Left on 02/23/2012 for a stay in January 2012

I booked the Rockery suite for a short break for my husbands birthday. He likes nothing more than to walk in the countryside in the fresh air and a hugh log fire to come back to. Great food in local pubs and a drink or two. The location of the Rockery Suite was perfect. Very easy to get to, they gave great directions that even a novice could read. The building itself is beautiful and even though the weather was not great, the local walks were wanderful, the pubs were warm and friendly and the food was great. The suite itself was very clean with everything you would need from a holiday home. Everything was easy to find. They seem to have thought everything and their home certainly ticked all our boxes. The suite was spacious too. The fire was fantastic and all the logs were provided in with the cost of the let. The bed room had a really comfortable bed and when you are staying in the middle of winter the electric blanket was a god send, there was also plenty of storage. There was also a really pretty outside space thay we unfortunately did not get chance to appreciate due to the weather. Maybe next time...

A cosy, restful, quiet, and enjoyable stay in a beautiful locati

Left on 02/04/2012 for a stay in November 2011

The Rockery Suite was not difficult to find, with the help of our GPS. The apartment is tucked away at the back of the beautiful house, so no views over the amazing valley. It certainly didn't matter, as taking our dog out in the mornings to let him do his business allowed us plenty of opportunity to take in the amazing views at the crack of dawn! The apartment has all the essentials you would need, along with dvd's and books on those rainy days. The log fire is splendid, as is the electric blanket in the bedroom, so there's no worries of getting cold. The surrounding walks are beautiful and our puppy thoroughly enjoyed them - as did we! It is a shame there is no patch of grass out the back to let the dog out on (and we had to put him on the lead every time he needed to go out), but we expected this before we booked. The local pubs are cosy and inviting and the food delicious. Perhaps a bigger supply of kindle wood and toilet paper next time? The towns surrounding Lake Windermere are lovely and we were able to get an amazing deep tissue massage one day - well worth the money! Thank you for our lovely stay!!

no hassle, pleasurable, cosy and excellent location!!

Left on 11/09/2011 for a stay in June 2011

I've stayed twice in the Rockery Suite now, each time with my partner and toddler. The booking & arrival was hassle-free. The apartment was spotlessly clean (I believe the owners enlist the services of a fantastic local cleaner!) The kitchen had everything we needed for a week stay from cutlery to frying pans, measuring jugs, wine glasses (very important) and condiments. The living room was cozy and beautifully decorated. The huge fireplace was a wonderful bonus. The bedroom boasted plenty of space for our daughter to sleep in a blow-up bed on the floor (actually the 1st time we went in 2010, she was in a travel cot and there was plenty of room for that). For the wintery weather, the apartment is very comfortable and warm, the lovely bed had an electric blanket, Laura ashley sheets, spare blankets and throws. There was no risk of getting cold in this place! Outside of the apartment had a lovely outside patio area which you may get to use if the Lakes rain holds off! The grounds that Sawrey Knotts is set within is stunning, with cleaning / drying / freezer facilities. Sawrey is well-placed for the ferry over to Bowness, Hawkshead - well everywhere! If you stay, pop and have a bite to eat in the nearby Outgate Inn! I would recommend the Rockery Suite to anyone and would make the point that even with a child, this 1-bed apartment was perfectly adequate and catered for all of our needs. We utilised the library of books and dvds downstairs in the main hall to keep the little one entertained. The wifi was a big bonus as it allowed for us to plan each evening, our action plan for the following day. I fully intend to return to the Rockery Suite either in 2012 or 2013 and imagine time and time again after that. Oh and what a bargain price for such a lovely Lake District setting. I'm doing a full time degree, have a child and only manage to work a few hours here and there so money is tight but the Rockery Suite's affordability is enabling even me to access a holiday!! 10/10

Perfect winter get-away whatever the weather

Left on 11/06/2011 for a stay in March 2009

We stayed for a week in late winter & couldn't have asked for a more comfortable place to stay. The real fire made the dark evenings a pleasure to spend indoors, often after a fine pint in the near-by pub. Walks from the property are beautiful straight out onto Claiffe Heights or down to the lake, but equally well-placed for excursions further afield. Very well presented and well-equipped, with a separate laundry room that proved useful in our unique climate! Looking forward to a return visit when time allows.

Left on 11/03/2011 for a stay in May 2011

We will be booking The Rockery Suite for a fifth time next year as we so enjoy this comfortable and peaceful apartment set within a most beautiful part of the Lake District. The surroundings meet all walkers' needs - the local shop is well stocked and the apartment itself offers warmth and comfort at a high level. It particularly suits us too that we can have our pet with us on holiday. We have found many interesting NT properties to visit in the area - the ferry being a c.15 min. walk away. There is adequate car parking for the apartment. One extra point is the large variety of bird life that is visable from the lounge window - all they ask is a supply of nuts etc., and they will put on a colourful display.

Wish the apartment was our second home,as so welcoming, comfortable and set in the most wonderful surroundings. The apartment is spotlessly clean with every utensil, games, books,Dvd's etc you could think off, however, the fabulous sylvan walks straight from the house means they are seldom used.On a cold winters night nothing nicer than sitting in front off the roaring log fire. Many super pubs and eateries near buy if needed. My only concern writing this that the apartment will become even more difficult to book. You will fall in love with the apartment and Sarwey Knotts as we have.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Lake District. The apartment was good value for money and was pleasant to return to after a day out. Althought the weather could have been better we found plenty to do which included boat trips, visits to houses of national interest and hillsde and lakeside walking. We also enjoyed the cinema and restuarant experience in ambleside.
