Best location, Best views, but...roaches, bats, and scorpion

Left on 12/03/2012 for a stay in November 2012

Four adults stayed at Hawksnest in early November 2012 and loved the view and location. We have been to St. John twice before and this was the best view and location. The unit is very private. The unit is very open - the west facing side of the main living area is completely open making you feel like part of nature. That also became an issue at sundown. Starting around 8:00pm every night the unit became infested with flying cockroaches. We are not talking one or two...we are talking dozens and dozens. This happened every night of our 8 day stay. A bat was also trapped in the unit one night, and a scorpion made its way into the laundry room. We moved to the master bedrooms (4 total) which are screened but had to put towels under the doors to keep the roaches out. This unit has no air conditioning and the heat was unbearable at night (lows were 76-78 each night). The management company, Catered To) was great - they immediately came out and installed 2 portable units (1in each master bedroom that we used) and they helped enough to get some sleep. If the unit had electric screens to keep the bugs out during the evening this unit would be a solid 5 stars. If you want to be part of nature and want to enjoy a villa with perfect views and a great location but don't mind putting up with flying cockroaches, bats and an occasional scorpion then this unit is for you.

Great location and view. There is no pool, the hot tub blower does not work well, the screens need to be cleaned, there is a bird building a nest on the window of one of the bedrooms, and there is a hole in the screen as well. The bathroom mats and sheets need to be replaced. The new refrigerator is nice, there is plenty of ice. We enjoy being able to walk to the beach, walking back up the hill is a challenge, but doable.

Thank you for your review of Hawksnest Villa.

We would like to apologize for the malfunctioning dipping pool. The dipping pool has since been removed and replaced with a new hot tub. We would also like to mention that all of the screens are repaired, new bedding and mats have been supplied.

We hope to welcome you back to St. John in the future.

      Hawksnest Villa

Left on 03/29/2011 for a stay in March 2011

We enjoy our stay at Hawksnest very much. Our group consisted of four senior couples. The Villa was laid out perfect for our group., as we all had private bedrooms with bath. The private outdoor showers were unique. The Villa itself needs some tender loving care and a good cleaning, but would still recomend it to anyone interested. The views and privacy made up for any lack of updating.
Catered to Rentals were very easy to work with, and took care of our needs. The drive-way is very steep, and roads are a challenge. St Johns is a beautiful island with wonderful beaches.

In 19 the years since we were last at Hawksnest Villa it has lost none of its spectacular beauty. One of the great place and maybe the best on St. John. We enjoyed the proximity to the bays. We were close enough to town. We had ample kitchen capacity for a big bunch for dinner.

Secluded Villa Near Beach with Stunning Views

Left on 06/30/2010 for a stay in June 2010

Hawksnest Villa is a rare find. Located within the National Park, there are nearly no other houses within sight or sound of this house. With four nice bedrooms, deck space with a plunge pool overlooking Hawksnest Bay, and a plunge pool, it's a perfect getaway. The location is fantastic for accessing St. John's numerous, stunning North Shore beaches. Dennis Beach, one of the most private and secluded on the island, is just down a steep driveway.

If there's one possible downside to this house, it is that it lacks air conditioning. Cool nighttime Caribbean breezes make it a non-issue most of the year, but during summer months it can be a consideration.

      Unparalleled views

Left on 05/13/2010 for a stay in April 2010

The most impressive characteristic of Hawksnest Villa is the view. Our photos of sunsets over Caneel Bay taken from the deck could be used as postcards. The villa is nicely laid out for multiple couples, with each bedroom having its own bathroom and (outside) shower. The great room is open to the environs which blurred the distinction between feeling outside and inside (a positive). Fortunately, mosquitos were not an issue, but the occasional pearly-eyed thrasher bird was not above coming in to try to steal food left on the counter. Bananaquits and hummingbirds were always to be found in the gardens. Some of the furnishings were slightly worn and some areas could have been dusted a bit better, but these are small things compared to what the villa offers. Just across the driveway is Peace Hill. The short hike from there to the beach at Denis Bay was apparently enough to dissuade others, as we had the entire beach to ourselves.

Life Styles of the Rich and Famous!

Left on 02/25/2010 for a stay in January 2010

This villa experience was one of the most wonderful and most dramatically
beautiful experiences for me and everyone! Everyone was mesmerized by the
view! The beach was so idyllic it was beyond belief!! Even the bottom was like
silk to walk on and the water was like heaven. The color and light all beyond
      words!
The villa itself was spectacular. Everyone loved the outdoor showers. We felt
like Tarzan and Jane in tropical paradise. The evening meals in the presence of
sunsets so spectacular and accompanied by a sound system and ethereal
      music. Words cannot express!
Even if forced I couldn't think of a single negative thing.
I would wake up in the morning and have breakfast on the porch and watch
beautifully colored tropical birds lighting on the tree in front while sipping tea
and listening to perfectly choreographed music.
I never went to Cruz Bay or anywhere the entire time except the beaches on
      the North Shore.

      The Best!

Left on 01/14/2010 for a stay in December 2009

Best service - very friendly, not overbearing, professional.

Most amazing house I've ever seen - fabulous! Every amenity
      - all updated. Overlooking the most gorgeous scenery, my
biologist son says, in the world.

Best was the fact that there were no other houses because it's
in a national forest. Least was that it was hot in St. John!

      The Ultimate Vacation Property

Left on 07/13/2009 for a stay in July 2008

This is the second time we have stayed at Hawksnest Villa. This villa has it all - great location (on the north side of St John), breathtaking view of the bay, 4 separate bedrooms each with an open shower, an open living room with the tropical breezes gently blowing, and privacy.

The 'Catered To' staff was a pleasure to work with - from the time of the reservation to the follow up after our vacation. Our contact met us at the house since we were already on island. The house was clean with the refrigerator stocked when we arrived. The kitchen has all of the appropriate cookware along with a Weber grill outside. The living room has lots of comfortable chairs and has a nice dining table for eating, playing games, or assembling jig-saw puzzles. The 'hot tub' is more like a small pool and is right on the deck overlooking the bay. The sunsets are absolutely beautiful!

My husband and I went with our two adult children and two of their friends. The large bedrooms afford privacy and each has its own deck. The showers had a private, open air design - beautiful view even from the shower!

Most days, we went to Jumbie Bay or Gibney Bay (Oppenheimer Beach). You could walk but it is a steep hill to the road from the house. The younger adults found this to be a nice walk. The drive to Cruz Bay does not take long and we drove to Mongoose Junction frequently.

We went in July so the price was unbelievable. It was much more affordable than renting a house in the Outer Banks, North Carolina! The only issue we had was taking the trash to the dumpster. Once we got in a routine, it wasn't bad. Just had to remember to take the trash with us when we went to town :)

We all highly recommend Hawksnest Villa and will be planning a third trip there soon. If you go, be prepared to be spoiled by the house and the view!

      Gorgeous View

Left on 07/09/2009 for a stay in May 2009

Hawksnest Villa has an almost unbeatable view in a secluded area. The proximity to Gibney and Hawksnest beaches is a major plus, and a fairly short drive into town. The furnishings are a bit old and simple, but your paying for the location, not the amenities. The only downside is the open-air living space, which can be quite uncomfortable if your timing is wrong (ie, after a major mosquito hatching or during very hot weather).

Wonderful home but re rental availability poor

Left on 06/30/2009 for a stay in December 2007

As a vacation property owner in Cape Cod Mass. I was disappointed with Catered to in relation to their rerental policy or lack of consistency with policy. We have rented many times in St John and with each rental we have always been given the choice to re rent the week with that particular home. We knew we wanted to rent Hawksnest over a year before we arrived. I was told they did not take reservations prior to a year,I left my name and they said please call back at the 1 year prior mark. I promptly did early that morning and was told it was already rented for the 2 weeks we wanted and ended up renting another home for a week and then moved over to Hawksnest another. During our stay we called to ask about re renting for the same time period the following year and was told it was already rented. I said how can that be if you dont take reservations before a year and you said we would have the option for re rental for the same time period. I told them I do not treat my renters in this manner nor does my management company. I have many repeat renters and would not bump so to speak. I have been reluctant to rent through Catered to because of this practice. I did speak to Catered to regarding this as a rental property owner and hopefully they have either changed their policy or have stopped giving renters false information prior to rental and during...We love St John and will be back..

Response from Catered To Vacation Property Management - 07/03/2009

      Catered To Vacation Property Management

      Manager

We would like to apologize for the difficulty that the reviewer had while trying to book Hawksnest Villa in 2008 after their stay in 2007. While it has always been our policy to not take reservations more than one year out, there have been individual situations involving owner reservations and owner requests in which we have been required to deviate from the policy. In this case such a request was made due to circumstances relating to a family’s medical emergency that caused us to accept a reservation that we would have otherwise not taken.

To explain further, a guest that has rented Hawksnest Villa for at least a full month at this same time of year for nearly 20 years had to cancel their stay in November/December 2007 as a result to a medical emergency. Due to the many years that these guests have loyally rented the villa, the villa owners kindly offered the guest the opportunity to move their reservation to the following year prior to the one year reservation deadline. Unfortunately the dates that these guests selected did overlap with the dates that the reviewer had hoped to book. The following year the same guests were offered the first opportunity to reserve their dates and again they interfered with the reviewer’s dates.

We at Catered To Vacation Homes make every effort to be consistent in our reservation policy and offer repeat guests the first opportunity to rebook the following year. However there will be circumstances beyond our control that will affect the villa calendar. We sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding or miscommunication on our part. We constantly strive to improve service in every regard and we will use this feedback to assist us making certain that we are communicating with each and every guest effectively and fairly.
