Old Church Cottages are three self catering holiday homes, between Heavenfield and Paradise. The Stable was built in 1907 to house horses for the ajacent Presbyterian church, it has been converted into a large studio holiday apartment.

All the properties have been awarded four star rating by Visit Britain. In addition we hold a Gold Award for Green Tourism. Environmental and sustainability are issues we take very seriously and do our best to live up to its ideals.

The Stable sleeps 2 people in a double bed. It is a one-room apartment with a bathroom and shower over the bath. From the French windows are superb views towards pictur...esque Chollerton Farm. There is a fully fitted kitchen. The property retains its original stone walls with hangings and there is oil fired central heating for your comfort.

Facilities include a colour television (Freeview) and a radio. The well-appointed kitchen has electric cooker, microwave, toaster, fridge, freezer and a full range of kitchen utensils for making meals at home easy. We provide a high chair and / or a cot for those with a baby - please ask at the time of booking.

A pet is welcome.

We are very proud of the beautiful walled gardens in which all the cottages are set, where you may wander at will or find “secret corners” to relax in. Beyond the garden wall are stunning views of the rolling farmlands of the Erring Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The Old Church is within a short distance of both Hadrian’s Wall and numerous notable Roman sites, all of which are almost 2000 years old. The main sites include Vindolanda (where you may sign up to carry out a week’s archaeological digging), Housesteads, Chesters and Corbridge which are all within half an hour’s travel. You can wander round these sites and be amazed at the standard and sophistication of both buildings and life all that time ago. Hadrian's Wall Path is close by for walking and there is a Hadrian's Wall Bus so you can walk one way and return by bus..

The local town of Hexham is seven miles away. It is an ancient market town with a beautiful old abbey dating from around the twelfth century. The town has picturesque little streets, fascinating antique shops and a selection of very good restaurants. However you do not need to venture into Hexham to eat well. One of the top 30 gastro-pubs in England is only a mile away from Chollerton in Barrasford, and there are several other good and very reasonably priced restaurants within a few miles.

The beautiful Northumberland Coast and Holy Island are a comfortable drive away, as is Alnwick Castle where some of Harry Potter was filmed. For those who enjoy visiting places further afield we are only 35 miles from the Scottish Border, a couple of hours driving from Edinburgh and also the Lake District though there is so much to see and do in this vicinity it’s a pity to waste time driving!

The River North Tyne is a short distance away and we can put you in touch with a club where you can buy a fishing permit. Other interests for the holidaymaker include golf - there are several excellent courses near-by, bird-watching, and Kielder forest has the darkest skies for you to watch the stars. Kielder is also an ideal area for off road cycling and walking. There are also many other good local walks for both the energetic and those who like an easier stroll.

Northumberland has so much to offer and Old Church Cottages is a comfortable and ideal base from which explore this wonderful area.Read more

Six miles north of Hexham and the A 69, take the Rothbury road towards Chollerton, at the fork take the left hand road towards Barrasford, Old church Cottages are at the top of the hill on the right.

  Everything about the Stables is designed to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Well equipped accommodation on one level with every need catered for. A very comfortable bed, fluffy towels and lashings of hot water make you feel pampered. The views are stunning, as are the gardens (which you are encouraged to enjoy) and there is plenty of well lit parking. Bird lovers would enjoy watching the variety of birds, including a woodpecker, that visit the bird feeders outside the patio window all day long. The owners, Marilyn and Ian are exceptional hosts, making sure all your needs are met whilst giving you every privacy. They are also very knowledgeable on the locality. Plenty of history abounds the area, which is also rich in local hostelry and music. My husband and I certainly intend to return again (this was our second visit) which is the best recommendation I can give, and we feel lucky to have stumbled upon this little gem.

  The stay at the stable at the Old Church Cottages was the best experience we have had with self catering. The Stable was very well equiped, clean, warm and lots of hot water.The hosts Marilyn and Ian were so welcoming and approacable. the information compiled by Marilyn on what is available in the local area was a great help in planning our itinary for our stay. The information was easy to follow and saved time.The location of the Stable was close to local rural attractions as well as nearby towns.
