Brisbane, AustraliaFabulous, Relaxing Place to Stay
Left on 01/14/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We stayed at the Beach House for about 10 nights in December 2012 / January 2013. We absolutely loved this place! It was about 15 minutes walking outside the centre of Hikkaduwa or a 200 rupee tuk tuk ride (about $Aus2.50). It was minimally furnished but done traditionally. It had 3 bedrooms: first bedroom with double sized bed, second bedroom with 2 twin beds and third bedroom with 2 twin beds. All beds had very good mosquito nets. The house was quite small so not sure if having 6 people in it would work out. We had 2 bathrooms. We also had a huge 8m x 4m undercover outdoor area at the front of the house which had 2 daybeds in it and a large table and chairs. Outside in the yard was a hammock. Next door at Cinnamon Gardens Hotel you could go over to have food. Everyone over there was so friendly and the food is cheap and good. You could also prepare food yourself in your own kitchen. We bought our food from Sandagiri (Kodak shop). It was quite a large supermarket and had everything we needed. Don't buy anything refrigerated from here. Quite often the electricity goes off in Hikkaduwa, sometimes up to 2 hours, which means that food at the supermarket doesn't stay refrigerated the whole time. In your kitchen, the only major appliances you have are a 2 gas burner cooktop, fridge and front end loader washing machine. There was no microwave or oven but there was a toaster and kettle. Chandana would do your house cleaning as much or as little as you wanted. He kept everything so clean and tidy. Mahinda was the Manager and he can give you advice on where to eat / drink / go. He has a tuk tuk and can take you on trips. Something to note, he has a SIM card. If you give him money he can top up the SIM card and then give it to you to use in your phone during your stay. It only cost us about $Aus4 to call australia for 10 minutes. Dirt cheap! Both Chandana and Mahinda are wonderful, friendly and very trustworthy. They do a great job of looking after you. At night in particular, you can hear road noise but it didn't really bother us. This is a perfect place to stay if you want to be self sufficient and have a quieter holiday away from noisy tourists. You also get to meet the locals who tend to stand outside your yard, on the beach, watching the waves and working out when next they are going to go fishing. For the money you pay for the Beach house, it is so worth it. Bliss!

Our family of 5 have just returned from The Beach House. On arriving and seeing the ocean at our door step, the comment i heard was " I already want to return here".After a busy year The Beach House was a perfect retreat for us, every afternoon was spent on the front veranda sipping a drink and watching the most amazing sunsets.
The house is very comfortable and nothing is too much trouble for the staff Mahinda and Chandana.
The bonus for our family was that the surf was pumping and only a short walk along the beach.
Would highly recommend The Beach House.

We just came back from 10 days in Sri Lanka with 6 days at the Beach House. The location with the beach and the see behind the garden is really unique. The people maintaining the house (Chandana and Mahinda) are very helpful and tried to accomodate all our needs. We missed the babycot for our little 1yr son, but Chandana made it up with great barbecues! The rain has been a little disappointing (several days in a row), with a lot of powercuts as well.

Superb location with direct beach frontage. Excellent staff in Mahinda and Chandana. The washing machine was on the blink, so they did our washing for us. We also wanted to bake and a microwave materialised.
The native hard wood furniture was delightful and full of character. The ensuite bathroom was one of the best we experienced in Sri Lanka. The beds were comfortable and aC very effective in each of the bedrooms.
The balcony is large, great for relaxing, drying clothes (it was raining) and generally hanging out.
The surf is too rough in the low season to venture in - particularly with children. There is a protected area up in central Hikkaduwa which was better. -

My husband and I enjoyed a lot spending a week in the beach house. I personally liked it a lot, everything is very well thought inside and outside. Local house manager was very helpful. I should also mention that place was extremely clean.
Location is great - around 20 minutes walk to Hikkaduwa town, which is a nice walk along the ocean anyway.
I would definitely recommend the place, moreover I would say it is the best one I've seen there. -

We absolutely adore this villa - so much so we're about to go back for a second time and that's unheard of for us. The location is perfect. Near enough to the busier end of Hikkaduwa that you can walk there (or take a tuk tuk for under £2) but far enough away if you want a more peaceful holiday. Walk out the gate at the bottom of the lovely garden and you're on the beach. You might have to share it with the fishermen hauling in their catch but that's all part of the Sri Lanka magic. The hotel next door is excellent for breakfast and they do the most amazing curries which they're happy to bring to the villa if you can't be bothered moving. The house itself is perfect and the house manager Mahinda will catering for your every need if you need him to (but you wont see him til the end of your holiday if that suits you better).

The best location in Hikkaduwa, on the beach & 10 minutes walk from the town with a decent hotel next door if you want to eat & drink, but feel lazy.
The owners have put a great deal of thought into making it guest friendly & helpful, we liked the ensuite in the main bedroom & the seperate air con in each bedroom, the games & books & plenty of plugs to run & charge things.
Best of all though is Mahinda, the house manager, & his brother & wife who come every few days & keep the place immaculate. Mahinda is great for trips out & helping to plan. He will do it for you, or if you are independant travellers, offers advice freely.
There is no downside to this place, we were more lazy than we thought possible &loved; every minute.
Book it, you'll love it! -

This was a trip to celebrate my 60th birthday and spend Christmas away from the cold British winter. The Beach House proved to be the perfect retreat. It is only a 10 min walk along the sand to the many beach bars and restaurants but far enough away to be peaceful. The hotel next door was handy for a lunchtime beer in the garden and wi-fi access and it was fun helping the fishermen pull in their nets. Also nice to take a 20 min tuk tuk into Galle. Thoroughly recommend!

DubaiA wonderful beach house in an idyllic location
Left on 03/18/2011 for a stay in January 2011
This beach house has been lovingly restored and is a lovely place to stay for a family holiday. The back garden leads straight onto the beach. Every morning and evening you can watch the fishermen as they sail out to sea and bring in their catch.
The beach house is comfortable and kept extremely clean by the housekeeper. Although the house sleeps 6 the communal kitchen and dining area is quite small. This was fine for a family of 4 and we made use of the huge terrace outside (kitchen doors open fully out to the terrace). However I would not recommend staying in the height of summer or if the weather will be wet and windy,
The hotel and restaurant next door (Cinnamon Gardens) does lovely, cheap food and home delivery! We spent many mornings on their terrace eating breakfast.
We would recommend the Beach House to anyone and would definitely go back.Response from The Beach House at Hikkaduwa - 03/19/2011

A brief note: if it does rain or the wind comes up, you can drop bamboo blinds to totally enclose the terrace.

Sri Lanka is a perfect short haul destination when living in the UaE as we do. We stayed at The Beach House for just short of a week this March with friends to get out of town & celebrate my birthday. We took the train from Colombo straight to Hikkaduwa. It is not only cheap but a great way to sit back & soak up the scenery & culture as you head south. Hikkaduwa has lovely friendly buzz about it, & The Beach House is a haven of tranquility. Beautifully furnished. Very comfortable & clean. The veranda & garden were perfect for socializing with our friends. But also ideal for just chilling, reading & lazily dozing to the hypnotic sound of the ocean. Great beach too.
Also big thank you to the house manager Mahinda for making out trip so easy. He was always available (a phone call away) to answer questions & to organise trips, but never intrusive. In short, none of us wanted to leave.
Thank you.

The Beach house is in such an amazingly calm and peaceful location. You can relax on the verander and look straight out to sea, watching the waves crash onto the beach. The local people are extremely helpful and friendly. There are good restaurants and bars close by. The house itself is very smart and clean and the perfect holiday home.

Left on 02/15/2011 for a stay in January 2011
Hikkaduwa is a bustling town full of European tourists. Many hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. Supermarket catering for all - even HP sauce!
We stayed for one month at the Beach House, which is beautiful and away from the town, set in idyllic surroundings: palm trees in the garden and the sea just a stroll away from the garden gate. Kept exceptionally clean and is very comfortable. House is very well supported by local staff offering advice, organising trips, problem solving and cooking (if you wish).
Have to mention the road noise. A2 situated just behind house: excessive noise of buses and trucks throughout the night - which for us, seeking peace and tranquility, somewhat detracted from the benefit of house and setting. -

I had the most wonderful time here with my family during the festive season. The people are nice and friendly and are very welcoming. Chandra, the housekeeper was very hospitable and made our stay as comfortable as we could have asked for. The house, situated right on the beach has an amazing view and is not far from great surf spots. It is not hard to find a place to eat and it is cheap and easy to get around by tuk tuks. Was definitely a great way to end the year! Very rustic.

This is the most perfectly situated property in the most perfect tropical village, with colourful shops easily reachable by tuk-tuk, tea plantations nearby, beautiful Buddhist temples, fishermen pulling in their nets right in front of your garden. Set slightly away from the "busier" part of the beach, it is quiet and tranquil, but a few minutes walk on the beach takes you to the beach-bar crowd. Great swimming, good surfing and excellent food from the Cinnamon Gardens hotel next door -- they will even deliver to the house if you don't feel like moving. Idyllic.

This place is fabulous!! After travelling and visiting various places around Sri Lanka, our final destination was to blob out in Hikkaduwa for a few days of relaxing beach time. Well... that's exactly what we got! The beach house is a quaint little abode right on the beach. It's location meant that we had private access to the beach (which the children thoroughly enjoyed) and also a nice stroll along the beach takes you to many cafes/restaraunts. The people in the area were very friendly and the managers of the property were also extremely helpful and accommodating.
We cannot reccommend this place enough. We had a wonderful time here and thumbs up to the owners for turning it into a slice of heaven!! -

we've had such a wonderful time in this house... set right on the beach, we would wake up and fall asleep with the sounds of the waves, admire shooting stars at night, lounge on the deck while enjoying delicious rice and curry delivered from the Cinnamon Gardens (hotel and rest. next door), the kids would play out in the garden during the day chasing little crabs, what a perfect vacation! the house is really cute and all is well organized : all you need in the kitchen, sim card for local phone calls, on site tuk tuk driver - Harold who is super nice -, good tips and advice. we will def go back and actually, i really don't want to share this advice with too many other people as i want to make sure it will be available for out next visit!! :-)

Location just right - beautiful beach that you can walk to from the garden - fantastic verandah where you can just relax, read, drink a lion beer or arrack and coke, listening to the waves crash against the beach. Had breakfast at Cinnamon Gardens next door every day - they let us use their wifi - and were very friendly and helpful. Harold the Tuk Tuk driver at the end of the road each day to take you where you want to go. 3 air conditioned bedrooms, fridge and freezer for lion beers, coke and ice, and sound systems for Mp3 player. SingaporeCan't beat the Beach House
Left on 07/29/2010 for a stay in October 2008
If you're looking to visit the south coast of Sri Lanka you really can't beat the Beach House. I've travelled frequently to Sri Lanka, mostly to surf, and the Beach House is by far the best place I've stayed. It's a well-kept, comfortable house in an idyllic setting, and also sits a short stroll down the beach from some of the best waves Sri Lanka has to offer. If you're looking to explore the coastline, it's a short, cheap drive from some of the other breaks. If there's swell, you're pretty likely to find a rideable wave somewhere nearby, if not just out the front of the house. The surf may not be Indonesian wave machine-style perfection but the a-frame peak a 5 minute walk away packs enough punch to satiate wave lust.
The house is very comfortable and clean and the sunsets are amazing. I didn't feel guilty at all leaving my wife there while I was off surfing. The house is really set up well and all of the guys who help out with cleaning/transport etc. are very friendly and professional.
It's amazing to be able to walk strait out of the surf, through the front gate directly on the beach and then knock back a few cold Lion beers followed by a tasty Sri Lankan curry and a good book.
This is a beach house in the classic sense. Great place! -

we have just arrived back from staying at the beach house, when we arrived we got met by the housekeeper that gave us lots of useful information, without being invasive. the house was spotless and a bowl of fruit and water teabags milk etc was left for us this was a godsend, after the 4 hour drive from the airport.
the beach is rifght on the beach but does have a gate around it so noone comes in it was like being in paradise, we have been to sri lanka a number of times and stayed in 5 star hotels, but as our family is expanding it becomes very costly so we thought for a change we would try a house, this was by far our favourite stay and we will be rebooking. next to the house is a small hotel run by a man called samantha, it serves excellent food and samantha goes out of his way to help, with anything eg boogie boards beach chairs etc, free of charge or a slight charge. harold the tuttut driver is outside and willing to take you anywhere very cheaply, myself wife and children absolutly loved it at the house we have holiday blues.
my only complaint would be for the house to have some beach loungers, but that is the only thing i would complain about everything else was perfect. -

sometimes you really strike it lucky...a truly delightful house in the most beautiful setting... literally at the edge of the beach.. palmtrees, breaking surf, blue skies, fishermen calling for help with their nets, a restaurant (cinnamon garden) right next door serving the best and the most reasonable food in hikkaduwa, and virtually your own personal tuk tuk driver.. harold by the name.
the house is so attractive .. bright silk curtains..colourful indian cotton bedsheets..locally made furniture..the lotus flower appearing on most of the carved doors and windows..the wide open veranda furnished with wonderfully comfortable rattan and carved couches and chairs must be the ultimate invitation to glorious relaxation.
our hikkaduwa holiday was wonderful..sri lanka offered us much to delight in..with our stay in the beach house being the very best part. -

Fantastic place to stay in Hikkaduwa if you want to chill out and have some privacy (ie not stay in a crowded tourist resort).
Expectional service from the house manager, and we used the recommended driver/guide Udith , from Pasan Tours - he was fantastic - we spent 7 days driving around the island with him, then relxed at the beach house afterwards for a few days.
The house beautifully renovated in beachside style, and is clean and well set up. The location is perfect - right on the beach, and just far enough away from the busy resturants and shops. You feel away from the hussle and bussle, but its also very easy to walk up the beach (or a cheap tuk tuk ride) to get to the restaurants. The house is located just off the main road, so you do get some traffic noise. It is good value for money, we stay as a family of 2 adults and 2 children and found the house very comfortable. -

Dubai UAEA perfect, relaxing family beach holiday
Left on 08/21/2009 for a stay in August 2009
We were after a lazy beach holiday in the tropics - and got exactly that at this beautiful beach house. The beach sand literally comes right up into the garden, and 20 paces takes you down the path under the towering palms to the gorgeous beach in front of the house. The air-conditioning and fully equipped kitchen (including washing machine, cooker and fridge) meant that we could enjoy lazy days at home without always having to head out to meals. But our favourite place to wind down had to be the huge balcony that fronts the house and offers great views of the ocean waves crashing onto the beach. We also loved the local touches in the house - wooden four-poster beds and beautifully patterned traditional bed sheets. Just next door is the friendly Cinnamon Gardens restuarant, which meant we could just pop next door for a delicious (and cheap - around $5 for fresh calamari and fries) meal. The housekeeper and manager of the house made sure we had everything we needed, and arranged some great trips to nearby waterfalls, temples, turtle sanctuary and beaches, which the whole family really enjoyed. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country, and the people are equally wonderful. One week was too short, we have already booked a return visit.

Left on 05/31/2009 for a stay in May 2009
My family and I spent six blissful days in the Beach House at Hikkaduwa earlier this month. The house is perfect for a beachy holiday with very effective air conditioning units and fans in all the bedrooms, good sunflower-head showers, an outdoor shower, and a well-equipped kitchen area. Our favourite area of the house was definitely the large veranda where we chilled out day and night, whether it was sunny or stormy.
We loved the decor of the house, with large wooden four-poster beds, colourful kitchen and a homely dining area. There is a CD player, so take your music (there are some good mixed CDs provided), but no TV - good idea to take a laptop and some Disney's if you have kids.
The beach infront of the house is clean, quiet and beautiful. We saw a few children playing and some old fishermen walking but that was about it.
Food wise, there are little grocery stores for the basics but imported stuff can be pricey. We took cereal, coffee and baked beans, next time we'll also take snacky food like biccies and crisps. Fresh produce is available from markets. We didn't bother cooking big meals as we ate out most of the time. The Cinnamon Gardens hotel and restaurant next door to the Beach House is perfect for when you don't want to venture far. (Lunch for family of four big eaters approx $15)
Pick up and drop off to airport went without a hitch and the guy looking after the house was very helpful and accessible.
We were there at the start of the monsoon season, which was amazing. The weather was warm but bearable and the storms were fantastic. The highlight of our trip was sitting on the veranda in the evening, listening to music, drinking good cheap beer, watching lightning light up the beach and wave crests while the heavens chucked it down. Perfect. -

From the time of arriving at The Beach House after been collected by the organised taxi service until the time we left we could not have asked for a better place to recharge our batteries. Life in Bangalore lends itself to needing a break to a place like the Beach House. A fully equiped spot with aircons, huge comfortable beds and a massive varahanda for those afternoon beers. Stepping from the varahanda onto the beach and within walking distance of the beach bar strip makes you feel part of the action but just far enough away to enjoy a peaceful strip of the beach. What was great for us was the fact that by just hiring a scooter we could explore the jungle in a few minutes and visit a few monestries, we even landed up having lunch with the high priest on the day the war ended with the Tamil Tigers.
