Description from the owner

The Tropical Beach House is a true beachfront property superbly located right on the beach at Thiranagama, just south of the centre of the popular Sri Lankan resort of Hikkaduwa, right in the middle of the largest and most beautiful bay in the South West of Sri Lanka. The Tropical Beach House at Hikkaduwa provides you with a very comfortable base from where you can enjoy everything that the area has to offer, such as surfing, diving, snorkelling, fishing or just basking on the beach in Sri Lankan sunshine.

As I hope the image tour conveys, the views from the holiday villa of the beach and Indian Ocean at the bottom of the garden are si...Read more

    Additional Location Information

Sri Lanka is a magical place of ancient Buddhist monuments, gorgeous beaches, lush green vegetation, clear blue skies, sunshine and friendly faces. The beach house at Hikkaduwa is a great place to unwind, sample the local surfing and diving opportunities, and from where you can then start to explore this stunningly beautiful island.

Hikkaduwa is located 100km south of the country's capital, Colombo. The area is well-known for its coral sanctuary and the proximity of wonderful scuba diving sites to explore. With its unique beach culture, Hikkaduwa has long been the most popular diving and surfing area in Sri Lanka. In the centre of Hikkaduwa, a lagoon also creates a beautiful and safe snorkelling area. Further south, where the currents are stronger, surfing is the dominant water activity. The impressive coral reef runs just offshore and is populated by exotic fish and sea turtles that come ashore on this beach to lay their eggs.

      Awesome beach house

Left on 04/24/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Stayed at the beach house for over a week and found the place to be excellent. Did not want to leave. The local crew running the place are real friendly and helped us out with anything we wanted, no hassles. It was perfect for our big group with ages ranging from 2 to 65. Right on the beach and walking distance or a short tuk-tuk run into town and restaurants.
For surfers it is only a 10-15 minute walk up the beach to a decent reef break which gets pretty fun waves, both lefts and rights. We were there at the end of the season, so I say it would turn it on with more swell mid season.
Overall great place to stay in Hikkaduwa.

      Exactly what we hoped for

Left on 03/30/2013 for a stay in March 2013

This house was the perfect spot for our family (almost-three-year-old-son) and our friends (couple in apartment upstairs) to relax for a week. The yard and patio occupied a lot of our time---a great spot for us to hang out with friends and for our son to dig and safely explore. We appreciated being a kilometer or so from Hikkaduwa town; the location makes for quiet evenings but easy access to restaurants and sights. Tuk-tuks wait outside the house at all times, and for $2 or less you can quickly get into town if you don't want to walk the 10 minutes. The staff is exceptional: We echo others' reviews of the exceptional seafood BBQ that Chanadran and his wife will come cook-up in the yard. Excellent! Make sure you ask to see his guest book on arrival; the recommendations in it for restaurants and outings are spot on. For the price, this house was everything we expected. It's basic (the apartment upstairs is quite nice; downstairs is functional, clean, and fine, but dim and without air con in the main living space. With fans and minimal aircon in the bedrooms we were all right) but in a lovely setting. Although reviewers might debate otherwise, the beach really is not a swimming beach for children (or all adults). You can splash in the surf, but you'll want to head to Chaya Beach or elsewhere (close by) for safe ocean swimming. That said, the stretch of sand in front of the house is the best on Hikkaduwa's beach. We took long walks and made the most of our spectacular view. Great spot! Gavin was exceptionally helpful with our bookings/ arrangements etc. We'd absolutely return.

Thank you for this lovely feedback, Rebecca, I’m so glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay at the Tropical Beach House!

I do understand that the large veranda does have an impact on the lighting levels inside the house - particularly in comparison with the bright sunlight outdoors! However, I do have a plan to improve the situation with the installation of sliding glass doors at the front. Watch this space!

I’m not sure that I will ever want to introduce AC into the living room, as well as the bedrooms, since my guests generally spend most of their time outdoors under the veranda and regularly pass through the house to pick up provisions from the kitchen.

We look forward to seeing you or your friends again in the near future! :-)

      Take care,
      Gavin

      Secluded beach house

Left on 12/06/2012 for a stay in November 2012

We stayed in the main house and had a great family vacation. The location is great -- a little outside the main strip so not crowded. The beach is fantastic. At this time of the year (Nov), the sea is not that rough, and our kids were able to play in the water as well with supervision.

Gavin was very patient in answering all our queries before making the booking. Once we got there, Mahinda (manager) and anura (housekeeper) were great and catered to our needs. We would certainly stay here again and strongly recommend the place.

Left on 10/30/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We had a great time! The beach house was clean and comfortable, the fresh seafood over the open firepit was perfect, calming ocean waves throughout the night, and great service onsite!! The beach is pretty much all to yourself. If you want excitement, you are just a 20 - 30 min walk along the beach or adjacent rode into town or take a quick 5 min tuk tuk ride and your there. Overall, I'm going back!!

      Paradise!

Left on 04/15/2012 for a stay in March 2012

"as close to paradise as I've been in a long time".
"The house was perfect for a beach visit. No frills but lots of thrills"
The bedding was very comfortable after the long days. "Haven't slept that good in months"

What really made it special was Mahinda and Chinthana. Both of them is what made the stay as close as perfect as it could be. They both attended to all of our needs and we had Chinthana cook us a couple of barbecues with a little local flavor. I think he missed his calling. He was available every day for whatever we needed which included food shopping as well.

Mahinda arranged a whale watching trip for three of us in the group which turned out to be amazing. Just as the Captain was going to wrap up the trip for the day he spotted a Blue Whale just abeam of us within 500 meters. I've seen a lot of whales during my 20 years spent in the U.S. Coast Guard but nothing that huge. Made me feel really small in a good way.

Sunsets at Ranjiths Beach Hut was just what we needed after the long days.

All in all I just can't say enough about the Tropical Beach House. I want to tell all of my friends about it but then I really don't. I think you get what I mean.

Exactly as described and more than met our expectations. Location is fabulous with a lovely stroll along the beach to the local bars/restaurants. We had a very chilled and relaxing week in the garden of this this lovely house, its perfect and spent most of our time relaxing here. Mahinda and Chintuck who look after the property were amazing and Chintuck is an excellent cook. He will shop for you, clean and make barbecue if requested and Mahinda will take you wherever you need to go, both payable locally. The house has hard wire internet and USB wifi but most of the bars have free wifi also so easy to stay connected if need be. Absolutely perfect and will definitely return and have already recommended to my friends. If you are looking for an understated very affordable holiday, then this is for you, the house has everything you need in an amazing location.

The lovely covered garden.....great place to chill out... View from the house... Beach outside the house.... Sunset from the garden....

Great self contained kabana moments from the tranquil and spacio

Left on 02/01/2012 for a stay in January 2012

I thought it was a great place for my girlfriend and I to end our two week trip of sri Lanka. We felt very safe there and the kabana was clean with a nice sized shower room and a good size bedroom/living room with fridge and cooker. It was 100 Rupees by tuk tuk to the more active area of Hikaduuwa and we liked being in the quieter area esp for the beach and sunset as it was always empty near us. If you are a surfer its great as you can just walk along the beach each morning to the beach break about 10 or 15 mins away or again get a lift in a tuk tuk. They are always outside waiting for business. There are closer places to the surf but again I think there is value in being that little bit out of the way and away from the crowds. Next door hotel is a great place to get a breakfast. And I thought the price was perfectly reasonable. The owner is extremley helpfull and can set up transfers at your request.

      Great house on the beach...

Left on 02/01/2012 for a stay in January 2012

We had rented the house and the cabana for three weeks and had a fantastic time. It's right on the beach with beautiful waves and water.

it's in a nice and quiet spot a short walk down from busier part of town with restaurants and bars so it's a perfect location with the best of both worlds.

The cleaning is good, the staff is excellent and very nice and helpful.

We liked Hikkaduwa, it's a busier and more noisy city than for example Unawatuna and Mirisa further south. But it's charming in its tuk-tuk runing up and down the street kind of way. People are nice and friendly. We had no problems with sand flies at all as a former reviewer has written, also we didn't feel bothered with traffic noise. Yes you can hear cars and tuk-tuks from one of the bedrooms but nothing that's anoying.

      Very recommended!

This is the 5th time I have stayed at the Beach House in the last 7 years.
Both bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms and air conditioning and it has a fully equiped kitchen which makes it perfect for a relaxing holiday.
The best thing is the fantastic location right on a beautiful quiet stretch of beach but within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants.

Absolute peaceful retreat by the sea

Left on 01/17/2012 for a stay in January 2011

The Beach House is a wonderful property situated just South of the main Hikkaduwa strip so it is super peaceful and relaxing, yet only a 5 minute tuk tuk ride from the bars and restaurants and buzz of Hikkaduwa town. Ideal for couples and families as it is perfectly safe for your kids on the beach with the gated garden which separates the private sandy garden from the main beach. The house has all the facilities for a really comfortable self-catering holiday. However, the Beach House team can prepare beach Bbq's for you or cater to any other request you may have. Plus there are great fresh seafood restaurants nearby. In one word - fabulous.

Left on 01/03/2012 for a stay in December 2011

I stayed at the Beach House for a week over Christmas and it was one of the most relaxing holidays I have had. The house is simple, but clean and with all the facilities that we needed. The location is perfect - absolute beachfront and only a short walk along the beach to a lot of restaurants/bars. The staff are wonderful and Chintaka's beach bbq was some of the best food that we had while we were in Sri Lanka. This house is great value for money and I definitely recommend it.

      Beach Bliss

Left on 12/14/2011 for a stay in June 2011

We have heard a lot about Sri Lanka as a great relaxing holiday destination. We found the Hikkaduwa Beach House online and just knew instantly that this is where we want to spend our vacation.
Being welcomed by the driver at the airport with a massive smile was just the first hint that this was going to be a great experience. We arrived at the house in the middle of the night and could hear the waves crashing close to the house, but no pictures could prepare us for the wonderful sight of the ocean when we walked out onto the patio that first morning!
The house is a perfect romantic getaway for a couple that just wants to spend time with each other. But also great for families with kids! Spent hours on the loungers in the sun, cooling off in the splash pool and playing around in the massive waves.
Mahinda popped in daily to see if there is anything he can arrange or assist us with. Chandana & his wife prepared the most delicious BBQ in our backyard. Location is great: absolute peace and quite with 2 minute tuk-tuk ride to the supermarket and 30 minutes to Galle.
The tranquil island atmosphere, breathtaking sunsets and friendly people really made our stay one to remember... can't wait to be back!!
