“Authentic, laid-back, non-touristy Hawaiian experience.” My husband and I just spent a week at Hale Kawehi. We loved every minute of it. Full disclosure: we both love cats and this charming Hawaiian home came with an especially loving tabby cat who greeted us every time we returned from an outing as soon as he discovered he was welcome. The house is much larger than the average guest house. It is charming and homey. It has a fully equipped kitchen and two covered patios where breakfast is a treat. Its location is central and easy to find as well as having easy access to local shops and restaurants. We were looking for a relaxed, non-touristy visit to get a sense of every day Hawaiian life and we achieved that goal well beyond what we might have hoped. Kawehi is a kind, generous and knowledgeable hostess. Lucky are those who choose Hale Kawehi. Anne Kass

About Hilo

Hilo is brimming with markets, sandy coasts, and tropical groves. The region, home to the University of Hawaii, is known for its spunky taste of Hawaiian culture. Come here to enjoy great dining and entertainment, take in traditional Hawaiian art, or go on an outdoor adventure.

Some of the attractions you will definitely want to check out include:

  • Rainbow Falls: This 80-foot waterfall covers the entrance of an ancient cave rumored to be the mother of the demigod Maui. It is an exquisite natural wonder to behold.
  • The Boiling Pots: Observe as streaming water that appears to be boiling makes its way through a collection of lava tubes and rocks.
  • Banyan Drive: This tree-lined street runs along the shores of Hilo. It is a spot known for having celebrities, adventurers, religious leaders, and politicians honored by planting trees along the walkway.
  • The Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo: Wildlife lovers will appreciate this one-of-a-kind attraction located in a rainforest. It offers rare glimpses into the lives of many endangered animals and is a photo opportunity not to be missed.
  • Onizuka Center for International Astronomy: Stargazers will find this attraction heavenly. Visitors can watch a presentation on the night sky and view a variety of objects through telescopes. There are also onsite guides to help you identify some spectacular sights.
  • Lyman Museum: This museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and relays the history of the Hawaiian Islands. Exhibits feature the unique flora and fauna of the area as well as highlight the area's volcanic origins.

Some of the most extraordinary architecture can also be viewed in Hilo. A Hilo castle is a spectacular sight to see and is often the backdrop for Hilo weddings. Many engaged couples flock to the area for their storybook day, but culture lovers also appreciate some of the more innovative attractions Hilo has to offer. The Hilo Tsunami Museum is one such example.

For your stay in the Hilo District, book a vacation rental in some of the most breathtaking surroundings on Earth. Beautiful ocean vistas and sunsets come free of charge with any condo, whether you are in an apartment rental downtown or situated by the beach. Vacation rentals also offer more space and privacy than a cramped hotel room. Whatever draws you to Hilo, there is no doubt you will find everything you are looking for in this great vacation destination.

Hale Kawehi B&B Guesthouse in downtown Hilo.
Stay at Hale Kawehi!

Stay at Hale Kawehi and you will never want to stay anywhere else. It is completely authentic old style Hawai'i and feels gracious and comfortable. There are 3 beautiful sitting areas outside and 3 inside. There is a wet bar, house wines, juice, jelly, butter, and bagels in the fridge. The kitchen is very well appointed, centrally located, and open to the rest of house for those who want to do their own cooking. There are beautiful stained glass windows - designed and made by the owner - in almost every room and literally hundreds of little details and collections to enjoy - the clock collection is particularly interesting. The mosaic inlays in the kitchen and wet-bar area were designed by the owner Some of the collections are from far-flung parts of the globe so you sense that the house is not only Hawaiian but a place that embraces the world. Almost everything here is an art object of some sort. The little green vines stenciled on the white frame of the front veranda enhance the garden-feeling of it. There are dozens of helpful notes in the house to guide the guest. If you are a TV watcher, there are several big, flat-screen TVs in the house. You can hear the traffic a little but the street is not busy it is not an annoyance. There is a nice cat, "Mr. Princess", who is friendly but not bothersome. At nite there are little chirping frogs at night that sound like birds to me - some people don't like the sound. This is a safe place for anyone - there is a secure gate with either key or combination entry and a tall fence for privacy and security. You will seldom, if ever, need fans as the temperature is a little warm in the day and a little cool at nite - you will want a cover in bed. There are big expanses of screen to allow the air to flow freely. Kawehi will be happy to tell you about the house and collections but will not intrude unless you ask. Beauty, hospitality, and comfort. You will always be glad you stayed at Hale Kawehi - I certainly am!see more
