Description from the owner
Our house on the hill behind the village of Ruatapu was built in 1980 not far from the site of the original settlers home.We have operated as a Country Stay(B&B;) since 2001 and enjoy meeting new people and sharing meals and our home. Breakfast is from our menu and evening meals are by arrangment.
We have Belted Galloway cattle, some sheep and free-range hens, we also have a friendly farm dog to assist us. Within a few minutes travel from our home there is Lake Mahinapua with many bush walks and serene beauty, also nearby is the Mananui Bush and beach walk and the soon to be completed Mahinapua Treetop Walk.

Additional Location Information
Ruatapu village has been established since the early 1900s for the purpose of milling timber. While the mill still operates there are many folk who live locally who have retired or work in Hokitika.
Visits to Lake Mahinapua, various bush walks and a wander around our farm are all things to do closeby.
Currently under construction and due to open by the end of 2012 is the first treetop walk in New Zealand. This will enable visitors to look at the Mahinapua Forest and Lake from 30 metres off the ground.
There are easy driving trips around the district which will get you to the beautiful Hokitika Gorge, Lake Kaniere or the township of Ross - the home of the "Honourable Roddy Nugget" (3.5 Kg!).
Our home is a distance from the road and there is adequate parking space off the road. There is no bus service to our home so private transport is needed

ChristchurchFantastic - a home away from home...

The hospitality and friendliness of this lovely home are incomparable. From the moment you step in the door you are made to feel welcome and at home. Roger and Eileen are your hosts, and within a short time we felt as if we had known them forever.
The area is very scenic, and the position of the house at the top of a bluff means that there are lovely views of the Southern alps to the east and the sea is not far away to the west - it can be heard booming distantly.
Nearby are bush walks and paddle cruises to explore the local area, and of course Roger has some great stories to tell about the local area. My favorite part is the delicious beef roast with all the yummy veges that Eileen seems to whip up out of thin air.
We will be visiting again - you may be sure!Response from Eileen & Roger Berwick - 08/16/2012

Sydney, AustraliaWarm & welcoming, with great company from the hosts

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Eileen and Roger from Berwicks Hill Country Stay. It was a great respite after a day of driving to enjoy their warm hospitality and great company. My partner and I enjoyed chatting to Eileen and Roger about the local area, history and life in general.
Breakfast the following day was delicious - we simply selected the items we wanted for breakfast from their menu the night before, and in the morning awoke to a hearty, freshly made meal... I particularly enjoyed the home-made lime marmalade!
If travelling from the North, the location is a bit past Ruatapu - you will see a sign on the road. At first we turned off directly at Ruatapu but then realised we had to go a bit further along the main highway.
If driving in the area at night with a clear sky, take a minute to pull over, get out and look at the sky - it is so brilliantly lit with stars, completely different from what you see in any cities.Response from Eileen & Roger Berwick - 08/04/2012
