Portland, ORGreat location and value
Left on 09/21/2012 for a stay in September 2012
We booked a room at the alexa artiste building for 3 nights and thought the location was fantastic for our trip. It's not exactly a hotel experience but the service we received from the managers and staff was good, even more so when you consider it in the context of a budget friendly rental.
We arrived in the morning and though I had emailed to confirm early check in was possible, it seemed there was a miscommunication and our room wasn't quite ready. We headed out for lunch and took a short drive and then received a call saying the room was ready. Check-in was quick and easy, allowing us to get settled and plan our outings for the day.
The room was spacious and is setup like a large studio apartment. You walk into a living room and bedroom area and then there is a hallway, with built-in wardrobe, leading to a bathroom and large closet. We didn't use the kitchen much but it was nice to have the option and to have a dining table to eat our takeout. We noticed that coffee was provided but again we didn't make use. A full-size fridge with freezer and stove were also available in the kitchen.
Sure the window unit a/C was a little loud but that's fairly standard, even in most hotel rooms the a/C gets noisy from time to time. There was an odd little window inside the shower which we had to cover up and our upstairs neighbors were a little heavy footed. Otherwise, not much to complain about.
The location was really the best part though, right off Hollywood Blvd, just a few blocks from the Chinese Theater and all kinds of touristy stuff. We parked in the garage next door and the lot across the street and ended up driving almost everywhere since we had plans in other parts of town and it was quite hot during our visit.
We tend to use our room as a home base and a place to sleep/shower during trips so not being in a traditional hotel was not a big deal for us and helped us save money that could be used on meals and attractions. -

Blackpool, United KingdomNot impressed but atleast it was a place to sleep.

Firstly the booking process was awful. I emailed the owner to say I wanted to stay here; I got 2 replies, one from Mandy and the other from Greg, both quoting different prices. I assumed that was just a slight miss communication on their part and as it was cheap I went ahead with the booking. I sent off the deposit and asked a few questions on how the rest was to be paid (cash or card?), what subways were nearby, etc. The replied from my emails were very delayed and quite often didn’t answer the questions being asked which forced me to once again repeat my questions. One of the most important ones was how do I get the keys, no-one replied to this for a very long time which as very worrying as I was traveling with my friend and we needed to know what was going on before we left the country. Finally we got a reply saying we will be met when we arrived, I assumed the owners/managers were just not very organised and just hoped for the best when I set off on my travels. Once I arrived in Hollywood, I found the building and buzzed Greg’s apartment to find no answer. As the apartment block also homes people permanently I asked a lady if she knew who Greg was (thinking everyone should know the owner) but no. She said she'd never heard of him- which was even more worrying! Finally after buzzing on his apartment a bit more, he answered and sounded a bit shocked/confused at who I was. Even so, he came to let us into the apartment, after realising that there were 2 of us in a one bedroom apartment he was very kind and offered to move us upstairs to a bigger one for the same price, but as someone had just moved out he needed time to clean it first, so said he would meet us the next day to move all our stuff. From then we didn’t see him again our whole 6 day visit! We weren’t too bothered about moving but after making this offer and not following it up we were very disappointed. Also we were not given any information on where the laundry room was so were forced to find this on our own. The air conditioning unit was hanging out of the window, with some cardboard covering and open window. Being on the ground level, this was not safe at all! The wifi was pretty poor, worked occasionally but not all the time. The good things were that it was cheap (apart from being over charged $100, we did get a refund but no one said sorry for the mistake), we had somewhere to sleep, it was near Hollywood boulevard, all the attractions and the subway. But the customer service we receive was awful. Even on the last day there was no goodbyes, we didn’t know where to find the landlord so just left the keys and went. If you’re looking for somewhere to sleep in central Hollywood without being disturbed, then yes definitely think about staying here. But other than that, it wasn’t a very nice and friendly stay, and the road it was on was a bit creepy to walk down at night. This place could be amazing if the window was fixed, and the owners started making more of an effort.

Fantastic location with an authentic la living experience!
Left on 08/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My teenage daughter and I traveled to la for a 10 day visit. She wanted to see what it was like to live in la so I decided to book an apartment rather than a hotel room. Finding the Suites at alexa artiste was perfect! It is an older building (1920s?) and has kept much of its originality. The wooden staircases are original so worn and leaning. The walls are plaster. The outside of the building was brick but covered in stucco which is now starting to fall off, exposing some of the original brick. All of this adds character and charm! The apartment itself was large and comfortable with air conditioning and wifi. The furniture is new, modern, and comfortable (the photos look exactly like it). The bathroom is small but all fixtures are in good condition and plenty of hot water! There's a wardrobe in the hall and a walk in closet so ample storage space. The kitchen has a gas stove (love cooking on gas!), full size fridge, and basic cookware, dishes, and cutlery. There's also a microwave, toaster, and coffee pot (no blender). Hopefully they will add to the kitchen in the future as it needs a dish rack, serving bowls, etc. They do have dog dishes though as it is a pet friendly apartment and it seems like all the tenants have dogs! The apartment entrance is gated and requires a key/security code to access so we felt very safe. The location can't be beat! Only one block from Hollywood Boulevard, 2 blocks from Highland Centre Mall, and 2 blocks access to Hwy 101 freeway. I rented a car to get to everywhere we wanted to go as la is big and would take forever to get to places by transit. There's a secured covered parkade right next door which costs $12 for 24 hr. parking. There's a grocery store 4 blocks away and restaurants galore. However, we ate at the apartment most of the time and made lunches to go (way cheaper). The managers were friendly and helpful. Housekeeping came midway through our visit for a complete cleaning and restocking which was nice! So, for anyone who is wanting to visit la as a "home away from home", this apartment can't be beat for price, location, and service.

Honolulu, HawaiiFeel like an aspiring local in a great Hollywood location
Left on 07/29/2012 for a stay in July 2012
You need to approach your stay in the right mindset. The Roosevelt this is not, but it's also not charging Roosevelt prices and is a great opportunity to feel like a local in an apartment complex seemingly full of aspiring musicians and actors; those we encountered all were friendly ( a fair few seem to have dogs). It is a 2 minute walk at most to be on Hollywood Boulevard and just a further approx. 5 minutes walk to be at the Dolby Theatre/Manns Chinese Theatre. Car parking is available next door in a multi-storey car park ($12 a day and they don't take bills higher than $20!). There is key entry security to the complex, plus a security guard on duty in the complex entrance at night. It is a must to be able to phone Gray (Director of Sales) upon arrival to gain access/collect keys etc, but we got lucky and a resident let us into the complex and went to get Gray (great guy willing to do what he can to make your stay a good one) for us. We didn't arrive until a tad after 10pm when we'd hoped to be there at 8pm but that wasn't a problem for Gray and he kindly provided a can of soda for both of my teenagers. We were also provided with soap, a dental kit and shampoo. There were three of us so an extra mattress was provided on the floor for my daughter to sleep on, which she said wasn't very comfortable. Gray informed us we were only the second booking in the appartment since its re-dec (the towels were new as bits of towel fluff stuck to us after taking a shower!). We advised him as we departed that the air con unit (through the window type and a bit noisy as is the norm for these) dripped onto the wooden floor and no doubt he will have dealt with this. One bulb in the walk-in closet wasn't working upon arrival and another in the passageway to the walk-in closet blew during our stay, but as this was only for 3 nights we didn't trouble Gray with this (although felt he would have dealt with same immediately if we had) and just provided this feedback as we departed. We didn't need to use the kitchen facilities during our stay but all appeared good. Didn't suffer any noise above that which you'd expect. It is said that James Dean once stayed at this complex? It certainly boasts character going back decades. For a short stay such as ours I would recommend you give this experience opportunity a try.
