Additional Location Information

Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage is located in Ahualoa, a bucolic country, farming and artisan community. Nearby community includes an award winning goat cheese farm, an estate grown coffee farm that produces the best coffee we have ever tasted, an organic green tea farm, an alpaca farm and an internationally know pottery studio and a blown glass artist studio. With advance notice, we can arrange for you tours of any of these farms and studios. You will love the adorable alpacas or goats, the unmatched aroma of Hamakua coffee and the exquisite landscaping at the coffee farm. Or may be you will enjoy learning the ins and outs of a Japanese tea ceremony. Let us know in advance and we will do our best to arrange for you a memorable experience at one or more of these special artisan farms.

We are just three miles from Honokaa, a quaint historic town on the North East side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Honokaa main street shops offer a large variety of creations by local artists and artisans. Several cafe/restaurants in Honokaa serves delicious healthy food made from fresh local ingredients.

Ahualoa is a great destination to explore the hidden gems of Hamakua Coast.

Honokaa is 12 miles from beautiful Waipio Valley Lookout, the most visited place on Big Island, second only to Volcano. You can walk down the Waipio Valley or drive down if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. (Be prepared to do a vigorous hike up if you walk down the valley.) Down in the valley you will see a black sand beach with a stream flowing across the beach out to the ocean. There are often wild horse roaming around in the valley. Waipio is also a great surfing spot. You can also hike to a waterfall from the beach.

There are plenty of options to tour in and above this beautiful valley - a mule drawn wagon tour, horseback riding tour or ATV tour for those looking for more adventure. For the energetic visitors, you can also hike down into the valley which is not difficult. The challenge is coming back up from the bottom.

A scenic drive down the Hamakua Coast gives you views of beautiful waterfalls and coastline. Historic Hilo town is 43 miles down the Hamakua Coast. Hilo is a beautiful old town that still has centuries old wooden storefronts – many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.

A stroll down the Hilo's Banyen Drive is not to be missed. This majestic, banyan tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo Bay is known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard & Pat Nixon, Amelia Earhart, and many other important individuals, including religious leaders and politicians both from Hawaii and around the world. These trees have withstood several tsunamis and spread their broad canopies near the edge of the shoreline. It is a pleasant walk under the shade and incredible beauty of these trees and view of the ocean. your stroll can continue into classic example of an authentic Japanese garden that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors.

About 26 miles in the other direction (northwest) towards Kona is Hapuna Beach, one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the island.

Ahualoa is at 2200 feet elevation. In winter time, the weather will be much cooler than you would expect in Hawaii. It also can have rainy spells in the winter. Winter temperature ranges from 60-75 during the day and 50-65 during the night. Summer is the most gorgeous season in Ahualoa. There are lots of sunshine but never too hot. Temperature during is around 70-75 at day time and 60-70 at night time. The occasional showers make the air fresh and the area lush & green.

While our cottage is heated by an electric fireplace and we provide plenty of blankets and comforters to keep you warm, we suggest that you bring some warm clothes.

If you have time to expand your adventure we can provide you an exquisite place to stay at the most visited place on Big Island - Volcano. You will fall in love with our cozy, mountain, retreat cottage there. Our Volcano Mountain Haven is a wonderful one bedroom cottage located 3300 feet altitude, just 5 miles from the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. (website: hidden).

We will be most happy to host you at either or both of our magical cottages here on the Big Island of Hawaii. And don't forget you don't have to busily run around exploring, you can just retreat and relax in the quiet of either of our two cottages.
