Pondside Suite is part of our honey farm-tour and education building where for the past 20 years we produced a world famous gourmet honey - Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey. (We recently retired from and sold the honey business. )
The building has one large bedroom/sitting room (Pondside Suite), an education room with a country style kitchen area, a small meeting/dining room and 2 bathrooms. Our guests have private use of the Pondside Suite and the full bathroom with a tub and shower. The Suite and the meeting/dining room look out across the deck to a pond with an expansive view of green field with our beehives, and beyond to the big... trees and the sea.
The country kitchen is part of the education room across the hall from the Suite. Guests have full use of the kitchen. When the meeting room is available, (it usually is) guests can use it to enjoy breakfast or dinner. The Suite itself is about 300 sq ft with a queen size bed, a pull out couch, equipped with a stereo, TV, DVD player and wireless & cable internet.
If you so desire, Richard (a 30 years professional beekeeper) can provide you a 2 hour tour, experiencing the workings inside a living beehive, right outside your room. ($60)
Pondside Suite is located in Ahualoa a bucolic country, farming and artisan community 3 miles from Honokaa, a quaint historic town on the N.E. side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Ahualoa is a great destination to explore the hidden gems of Hamakua Coast with Honokaa main street shops offering a large variety of creations by local artists and artisans.
A 5 minute walk on our road is Motta Pottery where Gordon Motta turns out exquisite, internationally known ceramics. Just a 7 minute drive down the road and you can tour and sample locally grown green tea at the Mauna Kea Tea farm. Fifteen minutes up a back road you can visit, taste and purchase the national award winning goat cheese from Hawaii Island Goat Dairy. Further up that road is an estate grown coffee farm (Cloud Forest Coffee) producing some of the best coffee I have ever tasted. And yet deeper onto that road is an alpaca farm. Wait till you see a baby alpaca. We can also hook you up with amazing walking tours with Hawaiian Walkways 5 minutes from our place. Twelve minutes down the road you can visit an artistic glass blowing artist by appointment and their Ahualoa Glass Blowing studio in Honokaa.
Honokaa is 12 miles from beautiful Waipio Valley Lookout, the most visited place on Big Island, second only to Volcano. Waipio Valley itself is accessible by 4-wheel drive or shuttle bus from the Waipio Valley Lookout. Down in the valley there is a black sand beach with a stream flowing across the beach out to the ocean. Waipio is a great surfing spot and has a couple of hiking trails. One of the trails winds its way back to a waterfall. Another trail is a challenging day hike or can be expanded to a backpacking hike that takes you into another valley with a wilderness campground.
There are plenty of options to tour in and above this beautiful valley - a mule drawn wagon tour, horseback riding tour or ATV tour for those looking for more adventure. For the energetic visitors, you can also hike down into the valley.
A scenic drive down the Hamakua Coast gives you views of beautiful waterfalls & coastline with a botanical garden on the way. Historic Hilo town is 43 miles down the Hamakua Coast. Hilo is a beautiful old town that still has centuries old wooden storefronts – many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
A stroll down the Hilo's Banyen Drive is not to be missed. This majestic, banyan tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo Bay is known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard Nixon and many other important individuals. These trees have withstood several tsunamis and spread their broad canopies near the edge of the shoreline. It is a pleasant walk under the shade and incredible beauty of these trees and view of the ocean. Your stroll can continue into classic example of an authentic Japanese garden.
About 26 miles in the N.W. direction towards Kona is Hapuna Beach, one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the island.
Ahualoa is at 2200 feet elevation. In November, the weather will be a little cooler than you would expect in Hawaii. Temperatures can range from 50-75 degree.
If you have time to expand your adventure we can provide you an exquisite place to stay at the most visited place on Big Island - Volcano. You will fall in love with our cozy, mountain, retreat cottage there. Our Volcano Mountain Haven is a wonderful one bedroom cottage, just 5 miles from the entrance of Volcanoes National Park.
We will be most happy to host you at either or both of our magical.Read more

Serene, beautiful, secluded, fully-equipped suite on a Hawaiian
Left on 12/13/2013 for a stay in November 2013 | Tom and Betsy Adler
We stayed for three nights at the Pondside Suite, as arranged by our very gracious hosts, Candice and Richard Spiegel. Though we arrived quite late at night after driving up the Hamakua coast from Hilo, Richard met us on the main road near Honokaa and guided us along the curvy "old" highway to the Spiegels' rural bee-keepers' farm. He showed us all the features and amenities of the Pondside Suite, and made some very welcome and helpful suggestions about local activities. We loved the early-morning sounds of the birds, and found the suite -- with a very comfortable bed, room-heater (it can get cold at night in November!), Dvd-player, radio/Cd-player, maps, and books, and a fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom, sitting room, etc. -- to be much, much more than just a bare-bones "guest house." Our hosts were helpful in all ways, but never intrusive. We felt as if we had been welcomed into their own rich personal lives, and became, for the duration of our stay, a part of their ohana(family) on the Big Island. A 100% delightful experience for Betsy and for me!
