Large luxurious log cabin sitting within a large, well maintained garden, close to the beach, on the outskirts of the quiet, rural village of Pedro Miguel, 10 minutes from the main town of Horta and 25 minutes from the airport, with a stunning view of Pico mountain. The beach is just a short walk away, through the orchard, then down some steps. In the garden is a barbecue and pergola for guests use. If you want to experience life in the country, Azorean style, this is the place to come! You may see horses, oxen and donkeys working as pack animals, plowing or pulling carts. During the local festivals ox-carts and even goat-carts are used to carry bread, wine and cheese in a decorative procession.
From the main town of Horta and its modern marina you can go whale watching, swimming with dolphins, snorkelling with sharks and rays, deep sea, coastal and sport fishing, diving and sailing. These are the main attractions, along with a visit to our spectacular "Caldeira", and the dramatic moonscape of the Capelinhos eruption site and lighthouse, which now boasts an impressive underground interpretation centre. You can also go horse riding along the many quiet lanes, or take a hike around the caldeira, or just enjoy a gentle stroll in the lovely countryside.
There are passenger ferries to Pico and Sao Jorge, allowing you to explore two more islands during your stay on Faial. Pico boasts the highest mountain in Portugal, a whaling museum, whaling factory, vineyards which feature on the UNESCO World Heritage sites list, the wine factory and fascinating lava tube caves. Sao Jorge is simply a beautiful, quiet island, ridged with volcanic craters and edged by cliffs sheltering pretty villages - the "fajas". The cheese factory is always a favourite visit on this island.
A rental car helps you to enjoy the islands more, as distances can be deceptive and this house is 2km from the nearest village shop and 8km from Horta. NB You cannot take the rental cars on the ferries between the islands. Alternatively, taxis are reasonable and our friendly drivers enjoy showing off their island! You can also rent scooters and bicycles.

We discovered various islands and rental properties in summer 2012. There are a lot of very nice different corners and houses on the islands (and we had only one disappointment which we left after one night).
Of all the properties we staid in, the Casa da Praia was number 1 for all members of our travel party - so we're back already in spring 2013!
The house sits on a nice, big piece of land on the east coast, there are lemon and orange trees in the garden, and at the end of the sloping down garden you have access to a small, but pretty much exclusive beach - 2,3 locals on the we, that's it. There's a garden pavilion which covers the big outdoor barbecue and from there, the terrace and all the garden, you have a wide open view on the main volcano on Pico island, just opposite.
There are large tables under an overhanging roof of the house, so you have multiple options where to dine.
Inside the house, squeaky clean is the word of choice and the decoration is very, very nice - let's call it "relaxed, marine motives and just what it takes to make you really decompress in such a tasteful environment".
In short: awesome!
