Additional Location Information
Hyams Beach is a small seaside village on the shores of Jervis Bay, about 3 hours south of Sydney and just over 3 hours from Canberra. The village is bordered by 3 beaches: Chinaman's Beach to the north, Hyams Beach and Seaman's Beach (sometimes referred to as "Sailors Beach") to the south. Hyams Beach is the middle beach in the centre of the village. All beaches face roughly east, out across Jervis Bay and Point Perpendicular to the Pacific Ocean. The sand at Hyams Beach is fine, soft and reputedly the whitest sand in the world (according to the Guinness Book of Records!)The village has an excellent general store/cafe. The village is bordered by Jervis Bay National Park to the north and Booderee National Park and Botanic Gardens to the south which gives Hyams Beach a 'natural bush' feel with an abundance of native plants, animals and birdlife. Booderee Park is a treasure trove: its roads are well kept and a pleasure to drive on, being quiet for all but the most popular of holiday weekends. There are clear signs to the facilities, the beaches, the walking tracks and camping grounds. Visit Steamers Beach, which involves a bit of a hike, or Bristol Point, Cave Beach or Bherwerre Beach where you will be rewarded with often being the only people there. Cave Beach has yellow-tailed black cockatoos, large kangaroos, several caves and perfect, if small, waves, so it is ideal for kids to explore
