My partner and I shared a lovely week here. The house was an excellent base for exploring the lake district and Scotland, but be prepared to drive as there aren't many amenities nearby. The house was well equipped for cooking, entertaining yourself (there were boardgames and books), and there was a lovely wood burning stove that we made use of on a few occasions. All in all, we had a lovely holiday and would definitely recommend the cottage. Read more

A Slightly Spoiled Holiday

Summary: Wonderful views and a nice woodburning stove, but dirty in places and had noisy construction taking place nearby during our stay.
Unfortunately, the cottage was a bit dirty here and there (kitchen, bed linen, cooking utensils), and the basement bedroom was musty so our clothing quickly smelled bad. The local people also do not seem to like that this cottage is rented, and we noticed they would walk/drive by and just stare up at the property which made us uncomfortable.
Most frustrating of all was that the house opposite was having its slate roof replaced (we were not advised of this in advance). Us and our two young children were awoken early several times by the sound of power tools which is not what you want on your holiday.
No phone service (3 or Vodafone) or wifi which was nice for peace and quiet, but something to bear in mind depending on your needs.
We definitely overpaid because of the disturbance from the roof replacement, however the view from the cottage was fantastic and the wood burning stove was lovely. Read more
The issues you have raised in your review have now been investigated and discussed with the owners.
Any cleaning issues you found on arrival or during your stay should have been reported immediately to the owner. Their details were included in your directions and key collection information which was attached to your booking confirmation. Had they been made aware, the caretaker would have been able to attend and liaise with you personally regarding any problems you may have had.
There has been, on occasion, a musty smell in the basement bedroom. This is obviously due to the location of the room, however, literature has been provided in the property with instructions on preventing this from happening during your stay.
Unfortunately our company and the owners of the property were not made aware that a house in the village would be having work carried out on its roof. This is, again, outside of the owners control. Had they been made aware of this during your stay, contact could have been made with the householders concerned in order to minimise any noise.
Ale Cottage is not advertised as having WiFi available.
Due to the geographical nature of the Lake District it would be advisable to check with your service provider regarding telephone signals if you are looking to stay in one of our more rural properties.
We are unable to prevent anyone from looking or driving past this property as it is located on the main thorough fair of the village. The lounge area is located on the first floor and there are nets and curtains provided for the rooms on the ground floor to ensure privacy at all times.
We can confirm that our office, the owner of the property and the caretaker were not contacted regarding any issues or problems you may have had during your stay at this property. We were not informed of your concerns until 3 weeks after your departure, therefore, we are unable to comment further with regards to any cleanliness issues or noise pollution from outside.
As a company we pride ourselves on our Customer Service. We hope that these issues did not detract from your stay in the Lake District and we hope to welcome you back to one of our properties in the future.

The service from enquiry through to booking was excellent. The cottage itself was better than described. Superbly equipped, with everything from Scrabble, stories for babies bedtime to super comfy sofas and Sky TV! A really quiet village, we were a little concerned about the fact that there is a pub next door, but we didn't hear a peep for the whole week. Nicely located just a short drive from Keswick and the lovely walks near Bassenthwaite. Dodd woods a winner too. Will return next year (and pack less things as everything is there already!).
Better than our own home.

The cottage is excellent, comfy sofas and beds. The log fire made it so cosy. We had our border terriers with us and they loved it. It felt like home from home and better, no rules and a very relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen has everything you will need and more.
We were very lucky with the weather and were able to explore the northern lakes around Keswick.
Will be booking for next year for sure.
