My wife and I spent our honeymoon 20 yrs. ago at Big Powderhorn, in a quiet little a frame called the Tamarack 1 and this started a family ski trip that we repeated about 10 times over the past 20 years. We have spent most of our family vacations with our children and my parents always and various friends or nieces and nephews at the Top Notch location. Once again this year Top Notch was a cozy inviting location that offers a lot of room and nice warm family atmosphere. We brought our grandchildren ages 8,6, and almost 4 this year along with other family members.
We had a absolute wonderful time as it was the 1st time skiing for all the grandchildren and to see them take to the sport so easily is unbelievable. The staff at Big Powderhorn, Caribou, and the Cheese Haus were friendly outgoing and helpful as always. This and the great ski hill are the reasons we have returned so often. The trip was great, although the unexpected sub zero weather in late Feb made it a little challenging. We cannot wait to do this again in the future. Thanks for a Great Family vacation and to 20 more years of the same! Read more

fantastic location on slope

Beautifully situated in the trees with a short trail to the slope. One of the best equipped kitchens in homes we've rented. Perfect size for our 2 families with kids - 7 people total. Homey with enough space for the kids to hang out together and the parents to enjoy some quiet.

First let say this was our 36th ski trip to Powderhorn. If we were not having a good time, we would have stopped going years ago. We enjoy going up to Powderhorn. The best asset is the shuttle bus. We park and call the bus when we want to visit the bars. No driving worries.
For the past few years we have stayed in Topnotch because it is trailside and has a hot tub. For us,two must haves.
After all these years we noticed that Topnotch is the same today as it was years ago. To the owners, spend some money to update the plumbing, the heat and just the general appearance of the building. If you want to relive the look of 1975. Topnotch is the place.
It never did warm up and the upstairs bathroom drain backs up
to over ankle deep in the tub.
Believe me our group is not trying to nit pick TN. Wouldn't it be great to raise TN from a bronze property to at least a silver level.
Stop taking all the money you make out of Topnotch and put some of that money back into Topnotch.
And the alpin is the best bar on the hill.
Big Powderhorn Lodge Stay

We have been going up to the up in this area for years staying at many of the lodges. Unfortunately there are few lodges that allow even small pets who are well trained. This is one that does.
The prices are very expensive considering you are not on a lake. The area is gorgeous for site seeing drives and small hikes. We were up during a period of intense heat without air conditioning. It was hot and uncomfortable. When in the up you need to have lots of bug spray.
I guess my biggest concern was the huge cost.

Fantastic summer vacation rental

We spent two weeks at Top Notch in the summer. Although there were only two of us, we enjoyed the spacious house, which would also be great for larger groups. The place was secluded, cozy, and we loved the layout and location. Originally from the area, we truly enjoyed coming back and staying at Top Notch. Definitely plan to return. The Powderhorn staff was friendly and helpful (even when we managed to lock ourselves out late one evening).

Powderhorn is a great family ski destination. Good variety of runs. Kid friendly. We recognize the same lifties each year, always a smile and hello. Topnotch is great location, ski in-out. Comfortable rooms, fireplaces, game room for kids.
Ski Trip 35
Left on 03/14/2013 for a stay in February 2013 | John
Let me start at the very beginning. This Ski Trip was our 35th at Powderhorn. We laugh when we read about the group that has been going to BP for 20 years. They were in seventh grade when we were going to BP. We were driving up there when Route 51 was two lanes all the way.
Our chalet this year was Top Notch. Top Notch is a nice chalet with direct access to the hill and it has a hot tub. The chalet itself looks as if it could us an update. But still is very comfortable. A few of the ladies in our group did complain the place never did warm up enough for them. They even called the front deck and asked for a maintenance worker to look at the heat situation. He told us it is electric heat and just takes along time to warm a building especially when it is so cold outside.
We love going to Powderhorn. The new lodge is beautiful. The bar looks new, but the lodge feeling will return with age. The alpin (correct my spelling) bar just rocks anymore. It's a great place to take a break, eat some lunch and of course have a few beers. After the runs close, the music and party starts. It's so great to see that place up and operating again.
The night life continues at the Pub & Grub. The place is packed, especially Friday and Saturday night. P&G; has the best live music of any of the bars.
Getting there is a breeze. Just call the shuttle bus. The bus is the best convenience at BP. Put your car away, you won't need it. Just call the bus and tell them where on the property you want to go and sit back.
There is one place at BP that does have some issues. That is the Caribou lodge. We were there years ago and the place was packed to the rafters. Now nobody goes in there, day or night. It's a shame to see that beautiful building going to waste.
To Bruce, keep up the effort.
That's the story. I'll be making our reservations for February 2014 in the next few days.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Topnotch, again. We love sitting on the couch in front of the wood fireplace and visiting with the family. The skiing was fun, even thou the trailside access wasn't useable.(We appreciated the 20% discount because of this.) We enjoyed the charcoal grill, fussball table, free shuttle service, good meal & bonfire at the alpen, and so much more. We were plowed out after it snowed. And, the staff was very friendly & professional. We did have a problem with the hot tub, as the temp was too hot to go in. Even thou it was turned down twice, and we added cold water, we still wern't able to use it. First time any of us have met a hot tub we couldn't get into. It was hot! The Ms. Pacman did not work, again, this year. We are hoping it'll be fixed for next year. All in all, it was a wonderful ski get-together and we will be back. Our thanks to the owners for sharing there cabin in the woods!
Beautiful Rental, but not enough snow to make it "trailside"
Left on 01/17/2013 for a stay in December 2012 | Julie
We loved this place, but our first priority is Trailside! We pay extra for it and with our large family group, it works out well.
Because of the lack of snow, and/or lack of snowmaking, we could not ski in or out.
We got a 20% discount, but that did not even begin to make up for the inconvenience.
That being said, the rental was very nice, clean, comfortable, roomy and very beautiful, set in the woods.
The lower level was great for the teenagers!

Top Notch is truly top notch. This is the most well-equipped rental unit! A very well-stocked kitchen made meals with multiple families easy and enjoyable. The unit was clean, nicely updated and provided lots of space for family gathering. We will rent again!

We enjoyed our stay. It was comfortable and roomy for the family to spread out. Coming from a warmer climate, we even enjoyed having a fire each night in May because the evenings were cool enough. The location was close enough to town, but still remote to enjoy the quiet of the woods. The first morning we saw a woodpecker eating suet hanging from a tree. Later in the day after being away from the lodge we found that's bear had raided the garbage and also climbed the tree to get the suet himself. He succeeded! :)

This was our first time at Topnotch & it was wonderful. The family had room to spread out and everyone fit around the dining table. My husband kept the wood fire going the whole visit. The fussball table was a big hit on the subzero days, when only the young ventured out on the slopes. We were surprised to find that we liked the indoor hot tub very much. The shuttle service was convienent and appreciated. A few used the swimming pool & enjoyed it. Just a note that the Ms.Pacman game did not work. All in all, a good time was had by all, so we will be back!

We have stayed here before and loved it once again. Ski in-ski out location was the best. We also used the shuttle and it was very convenient. The space in Top Notch worked well for the 4 families with little kids that stayed there. The basement living room area was nice so the kids had a different area to be in. The main level living area was also easy to spread out in. The hot tub was nice, but would be much nicer if it was outside! That is the only recommendation that I can think of.
Even without enough snow to be ski in, ski out, we thoroughly en

Happy Minus the Hot Tub

We were very happy with our accommodations except we didn't enjoy the indoor hot tub. It had an odd odor and left our swimming suits smelling awful. I washed them three times and the smell is still very noticable. I wouldn't recommend using the hot tubs at any of the Powderhorn resorts. Last year we stayed at a different rental property and the same thing happened.
Bottom line, the unit is great but the price is not.

The group of friends that stayed at Top Notch had a very enjoyable time. The only disappointment we had was how much the unit cost. We found out if we wanted to rent Top Notch for next year, it would cost $300.00 more than the previous year. This means to stay for a weekend consisting of Friday night and checking out Monday morning you are looking at a bill of over $2000.00 with new improvements being made to the unit. Bottom line, the unit was great but the price was not.

We thought the accomidations were very comfortable, yet a few hundred dollars too expensive for 8 people. Plenty of linens and bedding. Furniture and kitchen in good shape and well appointed. Nice to have firewood, matches, and miscellaneous things available there that one may forget to bring when renting a home.

This is our third stay at Top Notch and our reservations are already made for next year!! The layout of this condo allows for great conversations and family bonding. The view out the windows of snow laced evergreens is serene and peaceful. Each year we find improvements such as new bedding, wi-fi, etc. The welcoming fruit & cheese platter has made us feel we are personal guests of the owners.

Our check person was not very friendly. She didn't even greet us. I finally said that I was here to check in. Didn't seem very happy!
But the Top Notch chalet was awesome. It was walking into your own home. It have everything that you would ever need. The decorating was perfect for the chalet. So cozy but still had more than enough room. The fireplace was lite every moment we were awake. Can say enough good things about the Chalet.
Now the check out person was so friendly, happy to see us etc...

We loved the layout of Top Notch. It was wonderful to have living rooms on different floors! The kids would play in one while the adults were in the other. We loved the decor of the place too-very nicely decorated. Kitchen was well supplied, even included cookbooks.

We really enjoyed our stay at Top Notch! We had 3 couples, 1 with 2 kids along. It was perfect! Each of us had our own floor. The dining room table is so nice and big we could all sit together for dinner.
When they say everything you need is there, they mean it! There are many books, games, movies, ect provided. The kitchen had everything you could imagine in it. No need to bring a thing! The grill was nice sized for our large group as well.
The only down fall was the hot tub room. It just gets stuffy and the windows don't open.
However, everything else was absolutely great and I would highly recommend Top Notch!

The house was very nice and one of the best we have rented yet! The pacman game needs to be fixed and the downstairs fireplace chimmney must be plugged or capped at the roof. Even with the damper we could not get the smoke to go up the chimney. Not good, but we just kept with the upstairs fire place and all was good.
Again, very nice unit, we would stay there again!

Our family stayed here several years ago, and we had a great time. We have been coming to Powderhorn for 25 years at Christmas. This is one of the best places we've stayed. It's a little expensive, but very enjoyable. All aminities to make the few days fun for all ages. Even got gramma (71 yrs) to go skiing! Only downer was that Mrs Pac Man game was not working. Oh well...played that too many times anyway! Also, thanks for allowing dogs! Our yellow lab is a mellow fellow, and he enjoyed being able to spend Christmas with us. Would like to stay there next year, but I think you are booked up. Top Notch is well named!

Top Notch was a fantastic place to stay! It was better than home, with warm decor, plenty of room, and all the touches you would want in your own vacation home. We were so comfortable there. We loved the indoor hottub. At night, we watched movies in front of the fire. The skiing was great to! It snowed for three straight days. Thescenrery outside the big patio doors was like a photgraph. I wished there were bird feeder and bird seed available, then we could have watched the birds all day! We will definately stay there again!!!!
