The college boys arrived before us and their first comment was, "This place is cool!" The house was a great size for two families for a weekend stay. Cross country and downhill skiing were great and it was nice to return to a house where we could relax and enjoy a great meal. 2 flat screened Tv's with a wonderful movie selection. Some of us relaxed in the hot tub, but we were disappointed that the sauna did not get very hot. The spiral stairs were narrow and steep, but we didn't mind them.
How to enjoy a blizzard in the U.P.
Left on 02/27/2014 for a stay in February 2014 | Cortez Family
We took our annual trip to the U.P. in February. We have been doing this as a family for over 25 years. It started with our boys. The we added friends and girlfriends. We have now added grandchildren. Last year our Grandson Chase skied for the first time. He loved it. This year it was our Granddaughter Zoey's turn. She also loved it, was so proud of Herself because she was able to do the mile long run after one lesson. This year we stayed at Chalet Suisse. There are 8 of us and the accommodations were very adequate. The location is great, just 5 blocks from the ski hills. There are 2 fireplaces, a great sauna and a whirlpool tub that seats six. The one downside is the kitchen, it is very small. Since I do all the cooking it was not a big problem for us. For the first time since we have been coming to Big Powderhorn we experienced a blizzard. We were not able to ski that day as there was at least a foot or more of snow. We got real adventurous and took a walk during the storm to the Cheese Hut. It was actually not bad and the fainthearted took the shuttle back to Chalet Suisse. We spent some time in the Sauna and whirlpool which was great. The lodging association came and plowed and shoveled us out. Big Powderhorn has a great shuttle service and we took advantage of it to take the kids to the pool and then they drove us to the alpen House for dinner. Skied the next day for a few hours. The highlight of our trip was a visit to apostle Island. Because of the extremely cold winter Lake Superior is frozen over and you are able to walk out to the Ice Caves. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Worth the time it took to get there and the 6 or so miles we had to walk. Once back at the Chalet we again enjoyed the sauna and the whirlpool. The other plus about this rental is that you can bring your dog. We have already decided we would like to stay here again. Looking forward to next year, when it will be the youngest Grandson's first time skiing. Read more

Excellent place to stay in Big Powderhorn area

The Chalet Suisse is very clean and close to Big Powderhorn ski area. The jacuzzi, dual fire places and sauna were the best. They even had a big screen HD TVs on both levels. Also, dog friendly! It's true about those stairs going down to the basement, they are narrow and steep. Keep this in mind is you have small children or if you are elderly. The Bpla is super nice and accommodating. I would highly recommend staying here and or working with Bpla for your next up stay. Read more

Had a great weekend up at Chalet Suisse. We were blessed with a foot of fresh powder my last day there, so I did what any rational person would do. I stayed another night! They were great about extending my stay and at a great rate. I will be back!
Nice Stay in Smaller Cabin
Left on 02/07/2013 for a stay in January 2013 | ccc
Overall very nice for the price. The best parts were the two wood burning fireplaces, the authentic sauna, and the huge jaccuzi tub! These were nice. the bedrooms were relatively small, the kitchen was very small. Stairs were very steep, not suitable for small kids, we had to keep close watch on kids and stairs at all times. -- It was dated, but that was part of the fun. Thanks.
