No surprises at Villa Paraiso, their web site shows, and tells you what your paying for, and that's what you get, plus some extras!
The owners, Angie and Steve, and their sons, are great hosts. Always accommodating, and informative, but never felt like they were watching over us. We felt like we had our own private villa, complete with our own private pool! They even had some treats for us in our room to help get us started, which was a nice touch.
The moderately sized room, with nice furnishings serves its purpose, but if your feeling cramped you have a huge outdoor area complete with couch, chairs, dining table, plenty of room. The pool is quite large, and spotless. Access to beach is right in front of you, and the grounds are beautiful, and well maintained.
We used the complimentary bikes, kayaks, and snorkel gear. Having that equipment to use, at no extra charge was great.
We did the "homemade breakfast" , 4 days out of our 7, and it was delicious, for $6.00 and it's well worth it.
The location was perfect for us, as the actual town of Bocas is loud at night, and a tad on the dirty side, so being 5 minutes out of town by taxi, and 15 by bike was ok with us. Easy to flag a cab, or call one with cell phone provided.
We loved our stay at Villa Paraiso, and Bocas del Toro. We would stay there again, and would highly recommend .Response from Steve and Angie - 05/13/2013

Las Casitas provide the perfect, private, luxurious place to unwind after exciting days of exploring the islands of Bocas Del Toro. The grounds are immaculate, the pool is absolutely stunning, and the beach!!! Oh... it is perfect. The owners, Steve and angie and their boys, responded to our every need. We loved having the bikes and kayaks for our use. Boy, did we use the bikes! We enjoyed making a few of our own meals in the outdoor kitchen. Internet service was great, cleanliness of facilities was beyond reproach, and the whole ambiance was distinguished and elegant. We toured other hotels and resorts while were in Bocas. Steve and angie clearly have the best property.
I've read a recent review saying it isn't private or luxurious. I beg to differ. Yes, the island itself is not ready for prime time. That is part of the charm. Yes, you need to drink bottled water everywhere. Yes, you need to lock your casita and bikes. These are the little inconveniences of being in a developing country on a small island. If you can handle that (which we were happy to do), then the trade off is an amazing archipelago full of adventure with a very comfortable, safe, welcoming place to land at Las Casitas.
We chose the area of Bocas Del Toro for our 20th wedding anniversary because we wanted an adventure to a "non-resort" Caribbean location that was safe. We wanted to immerse ourselves in a culture with the privacy and comforts of home at our rental. The possibilities for the islands of Bocas are endless... snorkeling, hiking, beachcombing, surfing, etc. The people are so polite and helpful! Remember, the town of Bocas is a developing area. It does not look like other "ready for prime time" tourists towns. However, Steve and angie's property is ahead of the rest of the town in providing a clean, luxurious home to land after your exciting days of exploring the beautiful islands.
Las Casitas met and exceeded our expectations! Please feel free to message me if you have questions -

A villa was originally defined as an upper-class country house. This is a small bachelor suite (not really a luxurious setting) on the ground floor with a family of 4 upstairs. Nice pool, lovely beach but not at all private. There is no potable water and after your first two mini-bottles of water you are expected to commute into town (some distance away) to procure your own water. World class surfing is a 20 minute (not 5) walk away. Another issue is needing to navigate three sets of locked gates and doors to enter and exit. The entire pool area is enclosed with iron bars (more what you might expect in an inner city)and there is no direct access from the pool to the beach. Not good value compared to other comparables.
Response from Steve and Angie - 03/06/2013

These disgruntled guests lost ALL the keys to the property, due to their negligence, and were unhappy they had to pay to replace them! They knew what they were renting since they were referred to us by their BEST friends, who stayed here the year before and loved it!
Our ads and pictures accurately depict what we offer, including the safety of the bars that keep our guests from becoming victims of crimes of opportunity, in a 3rd world country.
The pool level of this solid cement block Villa is for the private use of the guests, including the pool itself. Our family is here to help when needed, including serving breakfast if desired, and disappear when not.
The drinking water in all the archipelago of Bocas is NOT potable, and NO ONE supplies it,so no matter where you stay, you will need to buy drinking water. Bocas Town is a 5 minute taxi ride or 15 minutes by bikes, that we supply complimentary.
You will find when you come to Bocas there are NO COMPARABLES! Most of our guests feel they have found the BEST Bocas offers! -

Steve and angie were the perfect hosts to a amazing location, you will not be disappointed, it's everything you've read and more. The room is beautifully decorated with all the amenities, large bathroom and eating area. Take advantage of the sitting area outside your room for spectacular views of the ocean while enjoying a meal. The pool is a treat on a hot aft. Make use of the kayaks and snorkelling gear, lots to see. The bikes came in handy for excursions and to get supplies from town, only minutes away. Looking forward to getting back.

I visited Villa Paraiso for my 3rd time! I have found the best place in Bocas and hope that you are fortunate enough to read this and decide to stay here too! Once you visit here you will realize this Villa really is Paradise. The Cottrells are so acommodating and helpful, but are never a bother. Bocas doesn't have many places on the beach and even less places with a pool. I have enjoyed having both of these wonderful amenities and the bikes too. I can get to town easily but don't have to deal with the noise. Don't pass this place over for something else you will regret it!

Colorado springs, Co.The best relaxing vacation I've ever had.
Left on 01/02/2013 for a stay in December 2012
It looked exactly like the pictures they posted. So many other sites we noticed on the internet embellished on the accommodations but they were honest and exact on what we got.The atmosphere they described can only be captured upon being here sitting out on the covered porch looking at your own enticing private salt water pool and ocean listening to the nature sounds around you and the waves crashing on the beach. The place was cleaner than any hotel I've ever stayed at, the family was amazing, pleasant and informative and quick to respond to any question or concern you may have. Angie's breakfast was excellent and we even got a goodie treat we hadn't expected. This place is in a real good location. it is a fun short bike ride to bluff beach where there is fun things to do there and they are a longer bike ride but fun, relaxing and a good exercise ride to starfish beach or there is always the bus or taxi. and within walking distance to an ecological place of diversity by the Smithsonian institute. You are close enough to town to bike there in a few min. and yet you feel way out in the country isolated from the noise and hustle and bustle. they have lots of fun eateries of local food to try and boat tours to other exquisite really deserted islands. We missed the turtle laying season but I can't wait to come back to see that experience. This is a must stay place and by reading the logs of other guests in the guest book everyone has similar exciting stories to tell of there wonderful stay here. I wasn't disappointed.

We also loved all the treats and local grub we learned about and ate also massages @ Starfleet are incredibly relaxing. Dinner by Jess was likewise satisfying. All in all, this island town, is amazing and gorgeous and having Villa Paraiso to come home to at the end of an adventurous day or just to relax here by the beach/pool all day...was the cherry on the sundae. We cannot say enough good things about the Cottrell Family ... Thank you so much for making our honeymoon the best it could be! We will be back... Anniversasry trip!

Steve & Angie,
Thank you so much for hosting a spectacular getaway. Your home couldn't have been more beautiful and I am sure that we couldn't have enjoyed our time more. Breakfasts were wonderful as were the special extras - snacks, tips/advice, massages - this was a perfect honeymoon. The guest books are truly a great source of knowledge on the island. We feel we found a pretty special place here in Bocas and hope to be back again soon.Response from Steve and Angie - 07/20/2012

We are happy to do all the extras to make a special celebration even more unforgettable! Our honeymooners enjoyed full breakfasts served poolside, candlelit dinners catered by our private chef, massages on the lanai or in Bocas town at a spa. Soon to come specialized private boat tours!
We are looking forward to having the 2 of you back to celebrate an anniversary!

Thank you Steve and angie,we loved our time at Villa Paraiso! We thought it looked absolutely incredible online (great website!) and it exceeded our expectations in person, thanks to Steve and angie's kind hospitality. The villa is just outside of Bocas Town, maybe about 2km? It was an easy bike ride and also an easy taxi ride if it's dark or you don't feel like riding. We absolutely loved being a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of town but it was great being close enough to the action. The pool was even more beautiful in person, amazing tile work! It was so great having the beach and warm ocean just beyond the pool. Steve used to build luxury homes in the us, and you can tell he put loving touches into the craftmanship of the villa-beautiful wood cabinetry, granite counters, nicer bathroom than my bathroom at home! Steve and angie keep guest books filled with honest tips from past guests, everything from where to go to dinner, what guides to call, etc. The cell phone they give you to use while in Bocas is such a smart idea, it really made everything so easy. You will have to take taxis in Bocas (cheap though!) and the best taxi driver's numbers are programmed into the phone, along with the best guides and other important numbers. They have really put a lot of thought into what touches can make their guests more comfortable. The snacks and beverages in the fridge were awesome too! I could go on and on, there is so much to say! Go and enjoy Bocas now while it still feels like a bit of a secret! We loved it!

There are endless possibilities of day excursions but be sure to take time to enjoy the fab property! You can even order breakfast from them served fresh & hot!
The restaurant next door makes for an easy fix if you are tired and don't want to go into town.
We did Starfish Beach, Nivida Bat Cave's Tour and The Oreba Chocolate Tour and loved it all! Still more to explore!!! -

My fiance and I had a very romantic and adventurous stay at La Casitas in Bocas del Toro with Steve and angie. Their property is immaculate and right on the ocean. We got quite a few awesome sunrises during our week long stay. The pool right outside of our front door was a great spot to relax and cool down on the hot days. The bikes provided got us wherever we needed to go while providing a little exercise to work off the extra calories consumed at many of the local restaurants Steve and angie suggested. We had a great time and will definitely suggest Villa Paraiso to our friends and family.

Angie and her family were extremely friendly, welcoming, and thoughtful. I loved falling asleep with the sound of waves crashing just a few feet away.

We just came back from two weeks at the Villa. It was really nice that we got picked up at the airport by Steve, and he helped us with our lost luggage. (Which was taxied to our door the next morning) The villa was very spacious with a kitchen and fridge. We didn't use the hot plates, but used the barbeque most nights. We used the bikes every day. We would bike most afternoons for lunch at different places on the island and other islands. Water taxi is cheap. Our favourite bike ride was up to Bluff Beach. Carolinas restaurant has a spectacular view. If you bike past this place another mile, you will find Bluff Beach Lodge restaurant. Order the Monkey Balls. They are delicious.
We enjoyed the pool, even in the rain. The ping pong table was great when the weather wasn't great.
The internet wasn't too strong, and only worked outside. We used our Blackberry at most restaurants with WiFi. We would recommend the Zip Lining tour. It was a lot of fun. Also, eat at Mantis. Make a reservation first.
Get a garden tour from Wes. The boys were great with all their help. Our welcoming breakfast and all the treats were great!
Thanks Cottrells.Response from Steve and Angie - 03/26/2012

We work hard to make our guests happy and appreciate wonderful guests like these, and very much look forward having them come back!
Note on the internet: We have the BEST service that there is to offer on this part of the island. We now have Claro USB modems that connect to the cell towers, which offers better service when the signals are low on the regular service. However, we are on an island in a 3rd world country and service will be slower or more difficult than in developed parts of the world. We will continue to make upgrades as they become available in Panama. -

We looked at a variety of different types of lodging for our 4 night stay in Bocas: Hotels; B&Bs; lodges; and Villa Paraiso, which Tripadvisor considers a vacation rental. No matter what you call it, it's amazing! Angie & Steve and their boys were excellent hosts--helpful, welcoming, and they brought us treats nearly every day. We stayed in one of the new cabinas and it was clean, comfy, and a great value for a a beachfront villa with your own pool. The location is perfect being close enough to town to walk it in a half hour/bike it in 15 min for great food and bars, and far enough away that it feels like a secluded paradise. I would stay here again in a second. Thanks, Angie and Steve!

We stayed at Villa Parasio for 2 weeks and were so impressed by the location,it really is right on the best beach of the island, the pool is private ( the first time we have had our own pool)and spotlessly clean as is the studio. We loved the huge terrace and listening to the sea lapping just a few feet away. The bikes were great fun and we used them everyday as it is mostly flat in this area we popped into town to the fabulous restaurants or cycled to our favourite La Carolina for lunch ,an amazing place with beautiful gardens and the best views of paradise. The water taxis were plentiful and great to visit the rest of the islands surrounding Bocas we snorkeled and swam, we were so lucky we eevn had a dolphin visit just 10ft from the villa!I must mention the botanical gardens just a short distance from the villa it is open twice a week and well worth the visit.Angie and Steve and their delightful sons were the perfect hosts so helpful and kind. They have just built 2 new cabanas which are next to the villa( although very private),perfect for a family or 2 couple we would highly recommend these too as they share their own pool and a great BBQ area. This is the place to stay if you want the best so don't bother looking elsewhere just read all their reviews they all agree with us.

My husband and I stayed in one of the new villas. We felt like we were on our honeymoon again! The view was so gorgeous. Waking up to the sound of the soft waves on the shore was truly relaxing. We absolutely loved the pool that was conveniently located a few steps outside our door. It was so refreshing and didn't have that heavy smell of chlorine like other resort pools, leaving your body smelling like bleach. The many palm trees around the villa made the swim feel so private like our own little secret place. The location was perfect for us. The villa was a few minutes away from the town where everything is. That part we particularly enjoyed because the town itself can get noisy sometimes, especially at night. The room was comfortable and provided everything you needed for your stay. We loved the fact that you could walk down the steps to the beach. It was like having a ocean for our backyard. The water at that particular beach was nice and calm but there was also another beach we liked called Bluff only a few minutes away by taxi. Steve and angie really made sure we felt at home and even if we asked a lot of questions they always were eager to help or give advice. We can't wait to go back, but next time for longer!

Chilliwack, B.C.grossly over-priced for location and service
Left on 02/28/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We rented two Villas for our family and our selves and were extremely disappointed for the experience received for money spent. We rented a three bedroom home in as nice a location with a much better service provided for half the price. The beach was comparable, the home and pool along with service was far superior to the Villa location. The web site said we would be picked up at airport. When we advised our time of arrival, we were advised that they didn't provide shuttle service anymore. When we got there we had to walk around with our luggage looking for someone to assist us as everything was locked up, We later learned this is the norm as there is a fear of theft in the area. It was like living in a cage for a week. We had difficulty contacting owners as they were often out enjoying the area with friends. We were advised by other renters that they had tried use the bicycles that were advertised to be included with the rental and they were under repair. We called one day and were advised that they would have to do some repairs on them before we could use. When we did recieve three of the four bikes we were to be provided, one had no brakes and all three were badly rusted and the chain kicked off on one of the bikes. None of the bikes looked like any repairs were done and one kept losing its chain. The Villas are a distance from town and it cost the five of us $10 to town and $10 back. A bad experience. Please don't believe some of the reviews. If we spent half the money, we would have expected what we got.

This comment was made on our NEW Villas Of Las Casitas Del Paraiso. However, the comment titled "AMAZING! ACCURATELY DESCRIBED AND WELL MANAGED." right below this one, was made by the guest staying at the new Villas at the SAME TIME this disappointed guest was also staying there. So, I guess it goes to show that you can't make everyone happy, even at the most beautiful place in all of Bocas. We apologize to this guest for any confusion, the new Villas have never come with airport pick up. Taxi service is easy and available. The site states that the 5 minute taxi ride to town will cost $1.5 to $2 a person, which is one of the cheapest destinations in Bocas . We do our very best to attend to our guests and to make them as happy and comfortable as possible, and give them the privacy that most people are looking for. Even when personally not on site, due to our volunteer community service, we are accessible by cell phone through the cell phones that we supply to the guests during their stay. Our gated paradise, allows are guests to go home with what they came with, unlike others who stay in places that haven't kept up with the changing times. Our bikes are a courtesy, definitely not the reason you would choose to stay at a private beach/pool location. They need maintenance from time to time due to the salt air and misuse, and we again apologize for any inconvenience this causes to our guests. These guests never expressed to us there frustrations while they were here, only positive comments. We were surprised by this review,as you can see from all the other reviews prior to this, that accurately paint the picture!

Whenever booking in advance there is always the question of "am I really going to get what I expect?". Well have no fear on this one. The beach is truly one of the only swimmable on the island. The villa is incredibly beautiful, and well built. The pool is such a wonderful bonus. The location is perfect, close to town but you would never know it if you never left. A+ on the amenities, the outdoor kitchen is awesome. The bathroom is luxurious and the bed is soo comfy. There is literally nothing I would add. We have stayed in boutique villas and paid 3x this amount for less. Steve,Angie and the kids are great hosts!!!

We stayed at the new villa's which are next door to the picture above, the rooms are cleaned, they have a mini fridge, microwave, tv (just for movies, they supply)a day bed, bed, and bathroom just shower. They will have the room cleaned twice a week if you need it towels etc.The beach is footsteps away not a wide beach but just nice, you lay in bed and the waves crushing into the shore will rock you to sleep, the pool is awesome,Angie & Steve will do anything to help you enjoy your stay their kids also are great and will help with anything tours, transport(taxi) idea's, they also have a garden and Wes will share. Taxi's are very easy the villa supplies you with a cell phone with taxi #, or just walk out on the street and wave one down, plenty of stores to purchase grocery to cook at the villa or eating in town is very reasonable our favorite was El Pescado, Guari Guari, all the tours at town are good to local island and beaches our favorite was Starfish but only go if it is sunny, rainy days find a snorkle tour, We totally enjoyed our stay at Villa Pariso we felt safe, comfortable and will wait the day to return.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Paraiso. The home is beautiful, comfortable and perfectly located, just as described. Falling asleep to the sounds of surf but still being so close to Bocas Town was perfect. We used the kayaks, snorkel gear and bicycles on our daily outings. Our favorite activity was to bike toward Bluff Beach, exploring along the way. Every member of the Cottrell family was friendly and helpful during our stay. We highly recommend a stay in Bocas del Toro and there would be no better place but Villa Paraiso. Although we rated this location as excellent, we recommend an upgrade to the WiFi as it was not always reliable and an addition of cable TV. The description made it clear that there was no cable so we were prepared but think the addition would be well received.

A few tips for your stay. 1) Taxis are cheap and efficient. Most drivers are sure to keep you entertained. 2) We used Jampan Tours to visit Zapatillas Islands, and highly recommend the trip. 3) Take a taxi to Boca Del Drago, eat at Yarisori's and hike the beach pathway to Starfish, it's stunning! 4) Use the bikes provided by the Villa to visit Bluff Beach. Stop at La Coralinas to take in the views with excellent food and drinks. 5) Savor angie's first morning breakfast, because it will be the best one you have on Isla Colon! Thanks again guys! Thanks so much for a wonderful time and really do hope we can come back some day. You have a beautiful place, but what really makes it outstanding is your warmth and hospitality as hosts. You strike a perfect balance between being available and helpful and giving privacy. We enjoyed visiting with you and think you would be super fun to have as friends, if we lived in the same place. If you ever venture to arizona look us up. We are only 1 hour from the Grand Canyon and would love to host you and show you our corner of the world. The villa is so comfortable. We enjoyed the native decorations and beautiful flower arrangements, and all the extras: phone, snacks, breakfast, brownies, cinnamon rolls, ect.. We wish you the best of luck with your business. We will spread the word in arizona and Wisconsin.

San JoseThe Perfect Vacation Getaway
Left on 10/25/2011 for a stay in October 2011
My husband and I had a lovely time staying at this location- it was absolutely perfect! The Villa was located in the perfect spot in Bocas. It's close enough to the downtown area (which has all the restaurants, shopping, and tours), so getting a 10 minute taxi ride into the city is always very easy, yet it far away enough from town so it also had a very private, romantic atmosphere. Plus, you have access to your own pool and private beach so it does't get much better than that!
Steve and angie were the perfect hosts. Their home was beautiful, they went above and beyond with helping us coordinate fun places to go, dinner reservations, and even tracked down a camera we managed to loose on a beach; yet they also gave us a lot of privacy so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Additionally, they provide their guest with an amazing list tips and tricks from past guest to make the most of your time there so don't bother taking the time to pre-plan your Bocas activities. This list was better than any Tripadvisor reviews we've seen :)
If you're looking for the best place to stay in Bocas- choose this location. You will not be disappointed! -

Great Stay!
Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in September 2011
My wife and I stayed with our baby for 9 nights at Villa Parisio! We had a great time and the villa was well located for short hops to all the different activities and beaches. We tried surfing, went to 4-5 different beaches, went wakeboarding, and ate out ... alot! Anyway I digress... back to the villa. We manage a resort so privacy was what we wanted most! We got it with the living area and private use of the pool. There is a lot of out door living space and even though it was "rainy season" it mostly rained at night and we still saw a lot of sunshine! Thanks for the great stay!
Cheers,

Left on 09/21/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We had the time of our life at Villa Paraiso! We were so pampered by Steve and angie! Steve was at the airport to pick us up and show us around town. Then he took us to what I believe is the most beautiful home on the island, and we settled right in. The pool and the yard is gorgeous, (not to mention your own private beach!) and the inside is very clean and cozy. We loved that they had bicycles for us to use, which we rode to town every day. They also provided kayaks and snorkel gear, which we also took advantage of. They provided us with a cell phone with all the numbers we needed already progammed in, and for not much you can buy a phone card to make calls back home. We took advantage of the honeymoon package which I would totally reccommend. This includes some of angie's wonderful breakfasts, a lobster dinner prepared by Chef Chris by candelight on the lanai, a packed lunch made with love by angie, and two 75 min. massages that we both swear were the best ever. Also angie and Steve had made us a beautiful arrangement of flowers and snacks in the room when we arrived, and they stocked the fridge. Angie was also kind enough to make us a few late night sweet treats! Steve, Angie, and the boys were also very helpful in helping us plan our adventures around the islands. They have some good suggestions about what to do, and how to go about it. I really cannot put into words the beauty of this place, and the generosity of the hosts. It made for a truly incredible week in paradise! We fell even more in love with each other, and also fell in love with Bocas! Thanks so much Steve, Angie, and boys!!! We hope to see you again. Maybe our one year anniversary!

I am a Gringo married to a Panamanian from Santiago, Panama, a wonderful city in the middle of the Republic. For perspective, my wife is in her twenties and I am thirty... something. Thus, we are old
enough to know better but young enough to still have a great time. Ok if you are reading this then you have already discovered two important facts: 1. The entire Cottrell family are the best hosts in Bocas; and you are very lucky to be their guests and 2. Reading the guest book(s) are/is the best way to have a great time in Bocas - as the tips are authentic and qualified by folks who know what they are talking about.
Bottom line = (1) food = Guari Guari and Restaurante Yarisnori (Bocas del Drago) for a great seafood lunch. The owner at Yarisnori even knew my mother-in-law from years ago (small world). (2) tours = Jampan - The only way to Go! (3) travel = Taxi El Famoso Miguel at 6737-7043.
Miguel is always on time and honest. Have fun! We will be back!

We've had a lovely week at Villa Parasio. The weather has been perfect, no rain at all. We enjoyed Guari Guari restaurant twice- good! We biked over to La Coralina, had breakfast and then biked over to beautiful Bluff Beach. We took a water taxi to Bastimentos and walked up the hill. The Thai restaurant was closed for a couple of weeks so we ate at Roots. If you go up the hill be prepared, it's a long walk up and the last half is a dirt/mud path through the jungle. I wouldn't want to come back in the dark. We enjoyed eating tacos/enchiladas at Shelly's - great calamari at Buena Vista, good food at Lily's and Lemon Grass. Read the other book for other ideas of places to go.
We read several books each. We enjoyed the porch and pool and just relaxing. Thanks angie and Steve for a great week!

We had a great stay at the Villa! Angie and Steve gave us the warmest welcome along with lots of great tips for a good time. We were concerned about rain in Jan. but really lucked out. Lots of sun! Having howler monkeys, parrots, and all the beautiful nature nearby really made it a paradise escape. We enjoyed a day with Jampan Tours- snorkeling and Red Frog Beach. It was great to walk for miles and see everything around - we always felt safe.
P.S. Angie's brownies were a yummy treat! Hated to go back to frigid Chicago.

This was our second stay at Villa Paraiso. We love the area, Bocas Del Toro is astonishingly beautiful, with tons of restaurants to enjoy, and plenty of activities from surfing and fishing to my personal favorite, drinking to excess while lying on a beach (Beers sell in the local stores for 75 cents - the place is like K-Mart for liquor!). There are fabulous sights to see nearby, like the Butterfly Garden, Dolphin Bay, and just down the street, the Smithsonian has a research center studying local plants and animals, which offers tours on Thursdays. This is an ideal spot for any couple and any style of vacation, lazy or active. The Villa is always kept immaculate, and the privacy and your own pool is such a treat. I highly recommend Villa Paraiso - except on dates when we are trying to get it for ourselves.

My husband and I spent five nights here on a trip to Panama celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I was originally looking for a hotel or bed and breakfast but couldn't find anything that appealed to me. I knew this was the place for us when I looked through the Vrbo website. All our expectations were meant and after seeing Bocastown I was satisfied I made the right choice. We felt safer in Bocas than most of the other places in the world I have been. The setting was peaceful and yet all the conveniences of town were easy to access - it was only a $1 to $1.50 each taxi ride or a 10 minute bike ride. This suite is the main floor of angie and Steve's family residence - totally private and quiet but they were both available at any time to give assistance. The suite is very clean and well maintained. They were the perfect hosts! The local cell phone programmed with numbers we would need as well as the bikes were a real treat. Others might be more interested in some of the other toys such as snorkeling gear. We used the bikes to explore the beautiful and almost deserted beaches in the area. We did the free and very infomative tour of the nearby Smithsonian. We had every intention of checking out as many of the wonderful restaurants in town but after our first night at Guari Guari spent most of our time there. Definitely make reservations at this place as soon as possible. For $19 you get four wonderful small appetizers, a main course and desssert. This is one of the best restaurants we have ever eaten at. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative. We would definitely visit again and may do so. We don't usually visit the same area twice - too many other places in the world to visit - but I do have a feeling that this is only our first trip to Panama of many.

We as many others before us, enjoyed our stay at Villa Paraiso. Angie is a wonderful hostess. We found their tips and those of other visitors very helpful! Here is what we recommend:
Stay as long as you can or come back when you get a chance- Bocas has a lot of offer!! If you arrive on the early flight from albrook, come prepared for the beach (you may be able to leave your bags with angie and Steve) because the villa is not ready until the afternoon. Go to Zapatilla Islands and Coral Cay- most amazing colored reef. Go to Red Frog Beach and Dolphin Bay - you will never see more dolphins in a single spot. The earlier you go the better! Consider hiring a local to do these tours. We did a tour with Jampan, which is owned by a Canadian, and one with a local guide (Basi) and he was awesome! While we had a good experience with both, we encourage you to hire a local to support their livelihood.
Make reservations at Guari Guari as soon as possible, both locals and foreigners recommend it! Go to Playa Tortuga for the drinks but not the food. Take a water taxi to Bastimentos to eat at Roots or Sonrisa del Mar for island food. Ask for the whole fish or Mixto (mix of seafood). Eat at Rincon del Sabor for local and cheap food, $10 for two including drinks and tip, you can't beat that! Have an icy cold beer and enjoy the sea breeze at the Reef. Take a break and relax on one of the benches in the park downtown.
Relax and enjoy! Chris and Carla, San Francisco, Ca

Left on 09/26/2010 for a stay in September 2010
We stayed at three different places during our time in Bocas del Toro. Of the three, Villa Paraiso provided the most familiar experience in a decidedly unfamiliar place.
The whole building was built by the owners, who had been high-end custom home builders in the us. The result is one of the nicest looking homes in Bocas. Everything appeared well maintained and we found the room to be very comfortable and well laid out.
The rental is located a little bit out of town, but not too far out that hailing a cab would be a problem. While it is located near the biggest resort on Isla Colon, you are still separated from it by plenty of plants and trees. As a result, things were always very quiet in the room, and outside the most notable noise was the sound of monkeys in the jungle across the road.
The service was excellent. Villa Paraiso is owned by a family, and all of them work to contribute to the overall experience. The breakfast that is provided on the first day was excellent: fruit, homemade yogurt, and banana pancakes. We ate with the family and enjoyed the wonderful view from the upper level.
Overall, it was the most Us-like experience we had while in Panama. The hot water and the electricity were available 24 hours a day, and there was an air conditioner in the unit. Outside the room, an abundance of flora and fauna awaited.
Just a couple of notes. The unit uses an instant hot water heater, so be sure to have them explain how it works when you check in for best results. Additionally, checkout time caught us by surprise on the last day; be aware that it may be earlier than you are used to.
Overall, Villa Paraiso gives you the chance to experience the wonder of creation that is the Bocas del Toro area, while not having to deal with the differences between Panama and your home 24/7. The whole family really contributes to the enjoyment of your stay, as any of them (including all three boys) were willing to help out where needed. We wholeheartedly recommend them. -

Villa Paraiso is hands down the best place we have ever stayed! It turned our 7 yr anniversary into a dream vacation! Before booking I emailed angie and Steve with many questions to make sure I wouldn't be disappointed and to learn more about the area and the things to do. Angie promptly emailed me back with the answers to all my questions.
You have your own villa set in a beautiful tropical location that has no neighbors on either side. This is perfect for the couple that wants to relax and have the beach to themselves. Open the front doors of your villa and walk straight to the saltwater pool. You'll probably rarely use this as 5 more steps away you are on your own private beach. This beach is the only real swim-able beach that we found although there are many diverse beaches within walking and bicycling distances. You're just a short distance away from a nice surfing beach and beaches that have more fish.
There is a folder with recommendations for anything you would like to do while you're there. We went to Red Frog Beach and Dolphin Bay, which included snorkeling. We also took a $5 round-trip bus to Bocas del Drago with a short walk to Starfish beach. There were starfish everywhere! You can take a boat trip back for $1.50 or take the walk along the beach/jungle and see howler monkeys!!! We were able to see these by ourselves and were able to get close enough to take pictures and video of a family of around 10. That was one of the best experiences I had.
If you're looking for night life, it's a short 20 min walk into town where you can eat at many diverse restaurants and visit discotechs later in the evening. It's also reachable by a $2 taxi ride. Steve and angie provide you with a cell phone that you can use to call taxis and many other useful people.
We stayed in one night and had a local, Chris, cook an enticing dinner for us. He is also one of the people you can find on the cell phone provided.
The Villa Paraiso is a dream vacation! ♥ -

We, Leonilde and Robert, a couple from Colombia and Holland were very lucky that another couple had cancelled their trip Bocas and we could stay in Villa Paraiso. We stayed there from 11 untill 14 of May, so only three days. Too short but we had no other option !
Those days, what a pity that it rained a lot, we had the feeling we were living in Paradise with our own pool, beach before the house, bicycles etcetera.
Angie and Steve are the best hosts you can find on the island and their breakfast is finger licking !
They gave us the best tips what to do in this short rainy period .We went to several beaches and had dinner at the best restaurants that were really cheap !!!
All the recommendations are also written in a book that you will find in the room..
Our lovely decorated room with flowers and a basket full of drinks and sweets.
We really miss this place !!

Only a few minutes in to town on bicycle which were available as well and we enjoyed going into town almost every day. Close by other beaches and restaurants as well on bike. My wife and I stayed for just a few days, but it was perfect. We enjoyed it very much. Quiet, very comfortable, a pool right at your door steps. The house and apartment right next to the beach, surrounded by a lovely Palm plantation. No neighbors, only the owners up-stairs (You will not see them nor hear them if you want to be by yourselves), but who will atent to your needs when asked. The house and apartment are in top shape, excellent attention by the owners as well (with some personal touch we liked very much).
Isla Colon is still one of the few places left where you can see the old-style Caribbean easy-going pace. Carribean English-speaking natives, mixed with an Indian population that speak the Guaymi language, and mingled together with Spanish; it's just beautiful way to disconnect from everyday pressure back home and flow with the easy pace of the Carribean way of life.
This is a place we will come back to any time. -

Steve and Angie were the perfect hosts and made me
very welcome, nothing was too much trouble for
them.
The time I spent at Villa Paraiso left me feeling
as though I had spent months there, fully
rejuvenated and ready to face reality back home.
Away from all the hustle and bustle I would awake
each morning to the sound of birds whistling their
tunes and waves gently lapping against the mostly
deserted beach only a few yards away. It was those
very same waves that would send me to sleep every
night after each relaxing day.
Villa Paraiso is situated in a lovely location
amongst the palm trees. The clean, modern studio
apartment had everything I needed. Just outside
the door I would sit, enjoying each morning and
evening. Being able to walk into the beautiful
swimming pool, enjoy a swim first thing in the
morning was certainly a luxury that I didn't have
back home, something which I would take advantage
of throughout the days and evenings during my
stay.
A walk into town would bring you to restaurants,
shops, diving facilities, etc. As for me, all I
want to do here is enjoy the beauty and serenity
of this jewel.
If you are looking for a place to totally relax
and unwind, away from noise, pollution and all the
other things we don't enjoy in the city, then you
have found it here. When you leave, you will leave
with a thousand memories.

The owners were very kind, friendly and very hospitable. We will never forget this vacation and whatelse could you ask for; roll out of bed right into the pool and then roll out of the pool down the stairs and right on the beach as you roll into the water. What a blast. I would very highly recommend this hotspot to all my friends and relatives as soon as possible.

We would highly recommend Villa Paraiso to all! There is something for everyone at the Bocas. The pictures of Villa Paraiso truly represent this beautiful unique property on the ocean. The suite is extremely clean and promotes an atmosphere of peace and relaxation. The pool , the deck and the sitting area are equally well maintained and clean. We especially enjoyed the sunrises and sunsets over the ocean that we could view right outside our door.( it just doesn't get much better than that!!!!!) The Cotrells are wonderful hosts that are always willing answer questions and to share their knowledge of the Bocas. There are plenty of good restaurants close by. Traveling by taxi was efficient and low cost. This made it easy to get to wherever we wanted to go.
We would definitely recommend Villa Paraiso to friends, relatives and absolutely everyone looking to have an awesome time at the Bocas.

You would be hard pressed to find better hosts than Steve and Angie. They know the area well and are a font of knowledge about the local area; nothing is too much trouble and they have lots of helpful tips and advice. The suite is well appointed with lots of neat touches like locally hand crafted furniture and exotic fresh flowers artfully arranged by their youngest son. The pool is handy for cooling off on hot days and the lanai is a great place to shelter from the sun, or the occasional tropical shower. The house is situated about 5 minutes from town by taxi and is an easy bike ride. The cell phone which comes with the suite is a nice touch and gives a degree of independence. It is also handy for tour companies to reach you or to check on schedules. There is lots to do around Isla Colon and the surrounding islands and Steve and Angie are more than happy to recommend places to see or things to do. It is impossible not to mention Angie's chocolate volcano cake, arguably the best in Central America. For me, the location of Villa Paraiso is ideal; close enough to town to make it easily accessible and far enough out to make it tranquil and relaxing. Combine that with great hosts and you have your own little slice of paradise.

It was everything advertised and more, the sounds of the ocean crashing on the beach in the background is something I'll not soon forget. The unit was clean, comfortable, safe and convenient. The hosts offered us use of their bikes and scuba gear which we found of great help, the island is amazing and you'll have a great time!

We stayed 10 days at Villa Paraiso. Steve and Angie have built a beautiful home on the water. The accommodations were exceptionally clean and tastefully decorated. You have direct access to the beach and the pool is very relaxing. Also, very easy to get to town either by taxi or bike. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

The room was beautifully decorated--very clean with its own large bathroom and kitchenette, a sitting area outside the room with beautiful oceanfront view--I could go to sleep with the comforting ocean sounds, and a comfortable 70-75 degree temp. The owners are friendly and very accommodating with a healthy respect for the guest's privacy. It made for a perfect multi-day getaway

Lanai City, HawaiiJust what I needed!

When I arrived to Steve and Angie's Villa Paraiso I was tired from the long bus/taxi/boat rides and was ready to crash, so being shown to my very own luxury apartment with huge fluffy bed and beatiful shower was just what I needed to rest and relax.
With the beach being a stones throw away the sounds of the waves lapping onto the shore and easy access to the beach provided the perfect setting for walks and reading in the carribean sun.
Angie and Steve made me feel very comfortable and I had plenty of privacy, very lovely guests. I would love to be there again right now if I could. Thanks for everything! -

I enjoyed the use of the pool for those nights that I didn't want to be bothered with the sand. Although being right on the beach itself allowed for the waves to lull me to sleep at night! Then only to wake up to the view of the sunrise on the ocean as I listened to the singing of the birds in the nearby trees. I liked being able to bike to the beach and see the howler monkeys. This was truly a vaction in Paradise!

My wife and I stay there for almost a week and had a wonderfull time. It was a beutiful home with a great view of down town Bocas. Sorrounded by nature and right in front of a white-sand beach.
The location could not be better. Regarding the amenities, the room had everything we needed, quality furniture, hot water, A.C., swiming pool, ect. What I like best were the night in this place, they were so romantic. Stars in the sky, town light in the background, the sound of the waves made it a dream stay. I would recomend this place for couples, who want to enjoy of a quite getaway. This place is the definition of tranquility!!! -

Left on 09/10/2009 for a stay in July 2008
My wife and I stayed here after a stay in town. That was exactly what we
needed. We were ready to pack it in and head home. This house is what
you imagine when you book your vacation. Don't stay in TOWN-NO
SLEEP-MUCH NOISE!!! It is close enough yet just far enough to be a quiet
peaceful vacation. You can swim on the beach or take some amazing walks.
The views are amazing, and there are four restaurants in walking
distance.
I would recommend this place to my Mother, Oh wait I did and she loved
it too! The family is very nice with there Midwest accents and well
behaved children. The room is very clean and comfortable. Well decorated
and arranged. It feels very charming and tropical. Exactly what you'd
picture!
As my wife and I often joked "this is the place dreams are made of"

We stayed at the Villa for almost a week. We loved having a kitchen in the room for cooking meals, especially breakfast. There is also a desk so my husband could do some work on his computer. The room is very spacious and up do date. It's more like a small apartment. We loved the view of the ocean from our room and the pool and outside sitting area are relaxing. To get to town is a short taxi or bike ride. We would definitely recommend staying here. You will not regret it!
