What Past Guests Are Saying
Great accommodation set in lovely surroundings
The property is without fault - spacious, warm and well equipped. Arrangements and directions provided by the owner were clear and helpful.
The Western Isles are a magical place to spend a holiday provided you enjoy peace, tranquillity and a feeling of remoteness. We were very lucky with the weather - sunny every day which showed off the landscape at its very best. The beaches are stunning...
Isle of Skye
Get away From It all!
Great place to stay if you like walking, wildlife (of the nature kind, beautiful scenery and getting away from the humdrum of daily life.
Accommodation is excellent providing all you will need for a comfortable stay.
We would have no hesitation returning again and I'll remeber the fishing rods this time!
Refreshed and recharged...
Valasay really is a home from home. The weather may not have been kind - wet, windy, cold - but anne Ryan's welcome was extremely warm, the cottage was inviting and comfortable and the scenery was breathtaking.
Ever-helpful, Anne had provided a map of places to visit on my drive from the airport...and I was greeted by a blazing fire and homecade cake on my arrival. Such a thoughtful touch.
I was staying alone, but the house would be perfect for a family of 4. All mod-cons (inc dishwasher and washer/dryer)...super-comfy beds, the crispest bedsheets and the whitest softest bath towels and the most efficient radiator heating in addition to the coal fire. Local artwork decorates the walls and there's a plentiful supply of books and info about the islands to keep you busy at the end of the day.
Great location as a base to get out and about to see the rest of the islands too.
I only had a long weekend here, but will definitely be back for a longer visit to this magical place.

Freedom and opnenness
We both so enjoyed the week in Valasay, independent and free to come and go as we pleased. The scenery is so different from the bland prettiness of so many English counties. The bare, rounded hills, the wind, the changing colours of sea and rock-lined shore. The wide horizon. The claustrophobia and blandness was blown away. And Valasay, though an island off and island, is close to the impressive standing stones of callanish, the crofters' village, the black house and some wonderful silver-sand beaches.
Anne and Chris are pleasant, welcoming hosts who,at the same time, give the vacationer plenty of space to enjoy the complete and comfortable facilities there.
And Reilly the dog is a good companion - although he won't return the balls thrown for him.
Susan & Dave
Wow what a fantastic holiday
Anne ,Chris & Riley were very welcoming and friendly. They were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the island and the information they provided was very useful. The house has everything and more for what you require and the real fire is so welcoming. Views were amazing especially looking down to the bridge and river. We would love to return in the spring when you have longer hours of sunlight because when it gets dark it really gets dark. However the dark nights are also a bonus as we did not know there were so many stars in the sky.
Perfect setting for an active or lazy holiday.
Ease of booking, directions and map given.
Croft House is warm, very comfortable and well equipped with good TV reception. The views from the cottage are outstanding with the atlandtic Ocean rolling in and out each day, and a wonderful skyline which changes constantly. Wind took some getting used to but didn't spoil the holiday for us.
Not too remote and within easy reach of so many interesting locations. Most memorable for us were the beaches at ardroil and Bostadh, the reconstructed Iron age house, the Carloway Broch, the Butt of Lewis and the Calanais Stones, to mention a few. We only had time to explore the West Coast and I'm sure the Outer Hebrides will draw us back many times.
Walking in the countryside was enjoyable with plenty of birdwatching for my husband and the sight of beautiful wild flowers for me, although I think we were at the end of the season for the machair.
Our thanks to anne, Chris and Riley.

Quiet, relaxing, beautiful, friendly and unique
Our stay at Valasay was wonderful. When we arrived anne had a lovely fire lit for us which made the cottage even more cosy. So much so that we had to prise ourselves out each day.
The scenery in Lewis and Harris was quite unique and absolutely gorgeous. Each night after dinner we all went for a walk to one of the lovely beaches/coves just to sit quietly. We did not chat to each other as it was so lovely just to take in the spectacular views and listen to the silence which is so lacking in our lives today.
Then there was Riley and what a lovely, sweet, friendly dog he is too. We spent a lot of time playing with him and will miss him terribly.
We had a fantastic week and totally relaxed, just what the doctor ordered.

Perfect - just one word says it all.
Our holiday home for the week was a home. Comfortable, cosy and with everything we could need. The owner became a friend who could be relied on for kindness and guidence. The dog was our pet too for the week - though never in the house always at the gate to greet us.
The Island a delight with a wealth of views so rich we were photography millionaires. We just want to say thank you!!
Stunning peaceful location staying in a very comfortable house
A very enjoyable, comfortable and relaxing week. On arrival, a very friendly welcome from the Ryans and their dog Reilly, including a welcome tray of tea and cake, and lots of advice about nearby attractions, as well as a tour of the house. This was a home from home for us and the coal fire was a real bonus in the evenings. Valasay was spotless and very comfortable, and everything worked! We loved the location, being right by the sea and at the end of the road, yet not far from Stornoway and the Callanish Stones. Bosta Beach is only a short drive away and is outstanding with an iron-age house which is very interesting. Many other lovely beaches further afield including Uig and Dalbeg. Wildlife in abundance was a great attraction for us and simply a beautiful area to walk in with views aplenty. A photographer's dream. We hope to return to Valasay another year.
Rugged, beautiful and peaceful
What a wonderful place, every window has a fantastic view, each one different. The house is over the road from the 100 year old foot bridge, crossing the bridge you can do a most intereting rugged walk to Bosta Beach, lots to see on the way, waterbirds, divers, terns, ring neck plovers, oyster catchers and other little birds, lots of wild flowers and blue butterfly, too much to list, plus many many other walks or drives to different areas on the island. The house was perfect with all the amentities we could hope for to make it a very comfortable stay. Anne provided a slow cooker which was great as you could prepared a meal for 2 days, have a day out and come back to dinner cooked, plus stove with hotplates and oven, the pantry had many items to help you prepare your meals, oil, salt, pepper, spices etc. plus foil, gladwrap. All rooms were well presented, very clean with comfortable furniture, from lounge to bed. The most amazing thing, was the quiet. I must say that Rylie the dog was a joy and we enjoyed his company and ball playing outside.
We would recommend staying a Valasay, one week was not enough.
Thank you anne, Rylie for a very enjoyable and happy stay, hope to return again.

A Real Home From Home
We had a fantastic holiday at Valasay this Easter. The cottage is a lovely place to relax after a good day's walking and has a cosy feel but with plenty of room for four adults. The real fire is a lovely treat of an evening (especially when the weather is doing it's worst) and the kitchen spacious and well equipped. Our hosts were very welcoming. Couldn't ask for anything more.
Thanks to Chris, Anne (& Riley) for such a lovely week. Can really recommend this as a place to stay.
Linda & Gordon
We have just spent a most relaxing and enjoyable holiday at Valasay. The standard of accommodation is first class with everything you could need for a comfortable home from home experience. The location is beautiful and given it's relative isolation, is still easily accessible and well situated for touring the island.Having toured all around the island we would consider it one of the most picturesque areas.Very happy with service provided by anne & Chris, who are most helpful. One of the best self catering experiences we have had.
Perfect in every way
Very comfortable well equipped cottage in beautiful location. Warm welcome.
Great views, total relaxation, excellent accommodation.
We spent a lovely week at Valasay overlooking the tidal inlet watching the sea coming in and out. We spent the days walking and found good eating places on the coast of Lewis, best langoustines ever eaten overlooking the sea at Port Nis on the Butt of Lewis. Would recommend the walk from the house to Bhosta Beach its well marked and worth the effort to such a beautiful Bay. If you can brave it dip your feet in the water, better than any spa treatment. All very relaxing and long evenings at that time of year. The house was comfortable and the Wifi useful.Quiet with a friendly dog. Everything for wet or hot days.
The Timson Family
We arrived to find the cottage clean and fresh. A very good use of space with wonderful views. The owners are great.
The nearest beach is at Bosta. A ten minute drive away. It's fantastic. The kids played for hours paddling in the sea and stream on the beach. There is a reconstructed Iron house on the beach. Well worth a visit. Great weather for flying a kite too. You can walk to it (if your'e feeling energetic) but it will take a couple of hours as you take in the coastal views on the way. You might even be lucky enough to see an eagle, heron or otter as I did on my evening walk. I was very fortunate. (the round trip takes about 4hrs approx)
The local community centre were very welcoming when we stopped off for lunch, which is open most days. Great food and excellent cakes.
If you're looking for a great holiday home that is set in a wonderful location. Then try this.
Warrington, Cheshire, England
Superb as always
This was our 6th stay at Valasay and we will keep on coming back it is such a wonderful place. Anne and Chris maintain a very high standard in all aspects of the holiday.
Couldn't ask for better. in fact we are still trying to find an equally good place to stay on North Uist.
Response from Anne Ryan - 07/28/2011
Hello David and Janet,
It's great to hear that you enjoyed your holiday just as much as before. I'm glad that we had some changes to the house for you to enjoy again this year.
You would have had a perfect day for fishing if you'd been here yesterday but WAY too sunny for that today. Oh well, soon be next year!
We hope you'll remember us again when it's time for your next break. One step closer to the 'Gold Visitor to Valasay Club'!

Such a special place - our fourth visit
Have just enjoyed another fantastic holiday at Valasay. Lovely warm, clean house. Friendly welcome from anne and also from her family dog, Riley. One of our favourite things is paddling at nearby Bosta beach as the sun goes down at 10.30 pm. You never tire of watching the water flowing under the footbridge at the bottom of the garden. Look forward to returning.
Margaret & Roger
An ideal setting for exploring the Isle of Lewis - and at the end of the day, for watching the tide racing through the little bridge into the loch. Warm and comfortable, with a coal fire blazing to welcome us. Little extras left in the cupboard were appreciated too.
Quality location with quality accomodation
An excellent home from home. We were allowed early access to the house as our flight arrived early morning from Glasgow. Chris and anne were attentive but discreet giving total freedom and privacy. Just bring food as all utensils are provided. A great place to relax and let your head slow down. Great walks for the experienced and amateurs like myself. Weather was stunning during our stay with the short journey to Bosta beach a delight. Two hours on beach with sun blazing down and nobody else on the sands...Bliss. Stornoway Co-op was excellent for bulk food buy although would also recommend local butcher for steak pies and black pudding. Great holiday with location and people being the main plus. No downside at all. There are a few single track roads and as a vistor I would recommend that you give the more experienced driver priority and pull over on the correct side of the road and prevent a build up of traffic.
Kings Langley, Hertfordshire
An idyllic place that fulfilled all our expectations.
The house was very comfortable and spacious, but very cosy at the same time. It was especially cosy of an evening with the coal fire blazing. It was clean, and newly and beautifully decorated. The kitchen had everything you could need. The beds were lovely and the furniture and fittings, including the carpet, were new and in perfect condition. The paintings of local scenes that decorated the house were beautiful. We couldn't think of anything else that that we needed. The web site images are very accurate and give a good picture of both the house and surroundings. We were delighted to find that it was all we hoped it would be. We had an 83 year old grandmother and an 11 year old boy and we all felt perfectly at home in the house. There were books to read, plenty of brochures for local sights and some games to play too.
We were warmly welcomed by the owner who had prepared a tray of tea and cake for us after our long journey from Hertfordshire. There were fresh flowers for us too. The owner was very friendly and helpful but left us alone to enjoy the peace and quiet of the setting. It was good to know that she was there and was ready to help us if we needed anything. Her dog, 'Riley' was wonderful and we would have liked to take him home with us.
We found the setting of the house was really special. The beaches were fantastic, the walks dramatic, and the sight of a golden eagle sitting on the rocks about 40 yards away was the highlight of our trip.
We strongly recommend Valasay as a wonderful place for a holiday and would love to return ourselves one day.
A few quick words. Arrived in the dark to a warm welcome and a fire set in the living room. The house is very warm and cosy, and was perfect for us as a familly of 4. The setting is really something being a little sheltered from the open sea behind a rocky hill. In front of the house is a small inlet from the sea to a loch crossed by a small bridge. The walks around the headland are amazing and Bosta Beach nearby is magical.
We all loved Riley the Border Collie who is so friendly and daft. Anne and Chris live next door and can tell you anything about the area.
Would thoroughly recommend staying here and would do so again ourselves ... not surprisingly it gets booked up quickly.

A dream became true
We enjoyed our time at Valasay very much!
Very good place to stay, very friendly and helpfull owner. Very good comfort, well equiped. Wonderful and quiet location. We loved to spent our evenings at the open fire place while watching the sunset. We decided to come back and already booked again!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay a Valasay, the location for us was perfect. We didn't want to be right in the town or also too far away. The views are stunning from the house and the drive to town is such a beautiful run we enjoyed it every time we went out and about.
The house has everything you need to make your holiday home comfortable, little things like washing powder, dishwasher tablets, lots of herbs, spices, oil to cook with, all there in the cupboard to be used. We didn't want for anything. Being next door to the owner of the property was not a problem to us. We barely knew there was anyone there and it was just reasuring that if you needed anything someone wasn't too far away.
All in all a perfect location, perfect accommadation, a fantastic retreat for a great holiday.
Peace and quiet
My husband and I have just spent a week at Valasay, along with my elderly in-laws. The accommodation has all the comforts of home that we required on holiday and more besides. Being outdoor lovers, we walked and felt at home with our surroundings quickly. We set up binoculars to allow viewing from the lounge window, which allowed us to comfortably watch the seals in the tidal flow, and helped us to keep a constant lookout for sightings of otter. On one evening just before high tide, when the water at the weir was very high, I took a walk outside the house on to the bridge. Just 10 feet in front of me a male otter came out from the loch, crossed the bridge and quietly dropped in to the water on the other side. Whether he noticed me or not, he simply carried on his life as if I was not there. A magical moment. We were also thrilled to see that the Golden Eagle chick we had watched last year has remained in the area and were delighted to see it land on the ground at the back of Valasay. If you want peace and quiet and are prepared to stop and watch nature then this is the holiday retreat for you. Jane, Buckinghamshire
wonderful, peaceful, beautiful location. comfortable and very clean accomodation. lovely owners.
Marjorie and Peter
A truly beautiful and restful place"
Situated at the end of a quiet lane, facing the entrance to the Loch, it woiuld be difficult to think of a better position to spend two weeks. Excellent walks begin at the front gate, and spectacular sunsets almost every evening.
Valasay is an extremely comfortable house with all of the modern facilities you would expect.
Ann and Chris were excellent hosts, and nothing was too much trouble. The wild orchids in our garden, along with the thousands just across the bridge made this a little piece of paradise. We shall certainly return to explore further.
Beautiful wild location
A lovely comfortable house on Great Bernera on the western side of Lewis. Fairly remote location although less than an hour from Stornoway by car. Ideal for birdlife. Friendly and helpful owners who lived next door.
Fabulous Time with Friends on Lewis
Our friends live in London, England, and we live in Toronto, Canada, and Lewis was our third Scottish Isles vacation together.
Living in a large metropolis, we love to spend our holidays in quiet, natural environments - and Valasay was perfect for this. It was so nice to have anne's fresh spice cake waiting for us on our arrival!
The accommodation provided plenty of space for the four of us, and the well-equipped kitchen provided us with a great opportunity for preparing delicious home-cooked meals each evening after our days of hiking and sight seeing.
We loved having a dishwasher! and a fireplace! And Riley, the resident border collie was one of the highlights of our stay - being dog-lovers without a dog!
It was wonderful to have wireless internet access as well, so we could post photos of our daily adventures on facebook each evening!
We visited several sites of the Calanais standing stones, and found the visitors centre at Calanais to be a great place to shop for souvenirs.
We each treated ourselves to a new tweed jacket during our day trip to Harris.
Our hosts were unobtrusive, but available to answer any questions if needed. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this accommodation - and we would happily stay there again when we return to Lewis.
Staying at Valasay was amazing. The welcome we received was warm and kind and made us feel at ease in this beautiful place. For us, a family with 2 teenagers, the house had everything we could have asked for allowing us all to relax and enjoy exploring the beautiful islands (both teenagers were revising for exams so the wifi was essential). The kitchen in particular is very well equipped making feeding everyone that much easier, with teenage boys that is so important!. Combined with the proximity to a well stocked local shop with holiday friendly opening hours; what more can you ask for? The beds too are very very comfortable so a good night's sleep was had by all. As to the location, what can I say, we almost fell in love with Bernera just planning the trip and realising what a fantastic location the house was in. Arriving realised all our dreams as Valasay is a truly breathtaking place that gives a remarkable sense of the natural beauty and wildlife of these islands but without being so remote as to be impractical for exploring. Every day Riley said good morning and saw us off on our trips and every day he welcomed us back. Thank you Riley, we miss you, canine friend! Most important of all though is the service that anne and her family offer through the cottage and how much her attention to detail and care of vistors means that we have the opportunity to truly relax and experience the best of these amazing islands. Finally a heart felt thank you to Lewis, for fulfilling my lifelong dream of observing otters in the wild, without Valasay this would not have happened!
Anne, the only thing I would ask is advice on how to recycle more efficiently. Everywhere recycling is managed differently so knowing what is important for your community would really help.
Five stars aren't enough - a truly fantastic place
We've just had a week at Valalsay after a break of 4 years, having stayed ther a number of times previously. It was wonderful to be back - it felt like coming home. Anne and Chris were as welcoming and friendly as ever. The location is stunning, the house is spacious and well equipped, and very cosy when the open fire is lit (evenings can be chilly even in June)
We can't recommend it enough if you want great wildlife, peace and tranquility.
We'll be back and it won;t be four years this time.
Rich & Karen
We had a lovely week at Valasay, the house is very comfortable & cosy. The location is beautiful & peacefull. Views from the house are lovely, a walk across the bridge and beyond a must. Anne is very helpfull and welcoming you feel at home in this lovely house as soon as you step inside. We were looking for a remote quiet place to stay, Valasay meets this 100%. Plenty of places to visit, Calanais stones (just down the road), Bosta beach (on Valasay) just up the road & much more. We would have no hesitation in recomending Valasay to anybody considering a holiday here. Anne is always on hand should you have any questions or need advice. A very friendly sheep dog Riley also lives with the owner, he was unwell when we stayed but is much better now. (Riley is mentioned in other reviews) Thank you Anne for an unforgetable stay, the memory is still strong in our minds of the lovely holiday we had.
Grantown on Spey, Highlands
The house is very comfortable and cosy with a fantastic coal fire. There are
great views of sunrise and sunset from the bedrooms and the kitchen is well
equipped. The house is set in very dramatic rugged scenery with stunning
views over the sea and the mountains. It is a very peaceful location and at the
start of a great coastal walk to a beautiful beach and iron age house. There is
a great shop locally and it is only 40 mins to Stornoway. I liked the traquility
and dramatic views. There was nothing not to like! There are great drives and
lots to see nearby.

We'd love to come back
Valasay was a super experience. Anne gave us directions for walks that occupied all of our week. We loved her interpretations of the changing September colors on the heather. And the facility was one of the best we have ever stayed in. Anne met us at the door with a tea tray, lovely ginger cake, and the kitchen and pantry are fully stocked. We especially liked having access to the internet to keep in touch with our family.
Ad, Anne Marie and Hans
We loved the house, the overwhelming nature on the doorstep and
A warm and welcoming house. The fireplace burning, a
fully equiped kitchen, great beds in cosy bedrooms.
All modern appliances available, including internet.
A comfortable bathroom and nature at its best on the
doorstep. A friendly and helpfull host (Anne) was
there when needed. If you want to stay in a
comfortable house in a truly remote place with nature
at its best aroud the corner; this is the place to
be. We enjoyed every minute of it.
A warm welcome is assured to all
Whether you are met by Anne herself or the family dog "Riley", you can be sure of a hearty welcome to Valasay. This cozy, comfortable two bedroom home comes well equipped (books, games, videos, all mod cons, etc.). The home is close to beautiful Bosta beach, an iron house, a village (groceries, gas & post office) and within driving distance to Callanish standing stones, Butt of Lewis and beaches of Uig. Also a great location from which to take a walk along the sea coast.In-house diary is full of great ideas from prior visitors on sights & restuarants, etc.
A telephone directory & instructions for non residents on how to use the phone & VCR/DVD would be helpful. Thank you Anne for a great stay and sharing your home.
Response from Anne Ryan - 06/14/2009
Thanks Roger for your review.
We very much appreciate the compliments on our property and your stay here. I hope the rest of your trip went well too.
Your suggestions are particularly welcome. We have tried to consider the needs of our guests carefully, but sometimes it's the easy things you forget about! I've written a 'This is what you need to do' guide for the TV, VCR and DVD and will do the same for the other appliances. I hope they will be more user friendly than the instruction manuals from the manufacturer.
So, once again, thanks for the great suggestion and I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay.
Whitby North yorkshire
A superb location with excellent facilities and a lovely host.
We live in the North York Moors, overlooking Whitby, so it may come as a suprise that we would choose an even more remote location to have a holiday. The experience was such, that I asked the owner to inform us if she ever wanted to sell. Whilst she declined, Valersay and the islands Gt Bernera, Lewis and Harris was such a wonderful experience that I can only offer but the highest recommendation.
The internet connection was also an advantage.
Mike & Mary
A super house in a wonderful location. The owners live next door and provided us with essentials as shops are closed on Sundays. They were very friendly and helpful and keen to ensure we had an enjoyable stay.
The property is clean and superbly equipped. Everything you could possible want is there.
The location is stunning with so much to see and do.
We will definitely return. Very highly recommended.

A sunny week at Bhalasaigh!
This is the perfect place for getting away from it all, but without giving up the creature comforts! The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable and the location is just stunning. TV and radio reception are not all that good, but we had not come to the Hebrides to watch TV! We were so lucky to have wonderful weather for our stay and were able to get out and see the beautiful beaches along the west coast of Lewis. The highlight of our week was the walk from the house to the beach at Bosta during which we saw an otter and an eagle. Even though it rained on our last day, we were able to get out to see the Norse Mill at Breacleit and have a quick visit to Calanais. Anne and Chris Ryan were there to welcome us and could not have been more helpful. Thanks for the fruit cake Anne! We'll be back!
