      Beautiful

Left on 04/20/2013 for a stay in April 2013

We stayed here the week after Easter, the weather was sunny the whole week and we had a great time. The cottage provided all we needed and more. Norma has thought of everything and provides many small touches which make all the difference.
The cottage is well equipped and finished to a high standard. It's location makes for a restful and relaxing holiday. We were able to get to all parts of the Islands from here, although there are plenty of places to walk and enjoy without going far. Bosta beach is a must and in the evenings we often had the beach to ourselves.

      Fabulous Stay!!

Left on 03/07/2013 for a stay in March 2013

What a wonderful place to stay. The ard is fantastic, it is fair to say that every little detail has been thought of. From the thoughtful welcome basket of wine (went down very well thank you), fresh scones jam and cheese biscuits. To the fact that there was tea and coffee, towels and all the linen was provided, there was even shower gel, dishwasher tablets (a god send when you don't have a dishwasher at home), and washing powder. Norma and Iain were so friendly and proud of the ard. We had a great stay and would highly recommend staying here, the ard had everything you could ask for including dvd's and games etc for when the weather comes in. Thank you Norma and Iain we had a great stay and I know David enjoyed the snorkelling for scallops (clams) and the lobsters were great too.

Left on 02/17/2013 for a stay in February 2013

What an absolutely brilliant place to stay. The cottage was immaculately clean, had the most amazing views and we were able to enjoy all our creature comforts in this luxury accommodation. Norma and Iain made us feel so welcome and were available whenever we needed them, nothing was too much trouble. The cottage had everything we needed and more, including all the extras like washing powder, softner, dishwasher tablets, coffee, tea, clingfilm, etc. Towels and Linen provided, also lots of spares. Our 22-month old boy loved it too. There was a wooden veranda which he loved to run round on and I mentioned to Iain about him being able to get out, so he immediately went off and built a gate and fitted it within an hour, leaving a safe place for him to play outside. What a star! Thank you so much for making our holiday one to remember. Loved the scones and the chocolates you left us and the fresh flowers were a nice touch. Cannot praise this place highly enough and would definately recommend to others. By far the best holiday let we have stayed in to date. Really hope to visit again soon

The ard Cottage itself has all you need for a comfortable and welcoming base; it is very well equipped and presented, and has great views. Bernera is actually quite a good place to locate yourself, if you mean to explore throughout the Isles of Lewis and Harris, and also want to stay in a scenic and atmospheric setting. Thanks again and good luck to Iain and Norma.

to rent this house was a perfect choice. The house is new and everything is there!!! Even blue ray player. The weather was a bit too windy and rainy to sit outside but the view from the house is stunning. You can make difficult and easy walks from the house without using a car. And by car you can roam the islands.
The welcome was warm with wine and cheese and a present.

The ard Holiday Cottage is a lovely, lovely place to stay. It is comfortable, clean and the attention to detail is exemplary. In every case, it goes one step further to make things really special. When we arrived, there were fresh scones and flowers left out for us, along with local beer and biscuits. The log burner had been lit and we were met with a warm welcome from the family.

The peace and quiet of Bernera is also spellbinding. In the evening, you can stand out on the veranda and hear nothing but the wind. The stars twist above you in a Milky Way haze and in the morning the whole place lights up with a deep golden glow.

But if you're not into that kind of thing, there's always the whirlpool bath and exceptionally comfy sofas to relax in!

I'd really recommend it. A great place to stay. Truly spot on.

Ps. Don't forget to visit Bosta Beach. It's not far away at all and it is beautiful.

The cottage was perfect in ery way inside and out - the peace and quiet was a tonic to the soul. Delicious home grown strawberries delivered by a champion soccer player with a lovely smile! Fresh scones on arrival. Magnificent Isle of Lewis beaches, courtesy on the roads and everywhere we went. Last but not least idyllic weather even though it was pouring back in Dublin where we live! Such happy memories we take with us to last we hope for ever. Thank you for a lovely stay. Brenda and Jennifer

The ard - a place where heaven and earth meet

Left on 07/04/2012 for a stay in June 2012

We have been on Great Bernera at The ard the first week in June. What a wonderful house with every comfort you can imagine and with Norma and Iain we had wonderful hosts, who really looked very well after us. Such as the Welcome when we arrived or when Iain brought us beautiful lobsters and crabs for a fantastic price. The house is fully equipped and we felt at home.
The house is surrounded by the most beautiful landscape. The view from the terrace (which is really huge) is absolutely stunning and just a short walk away - over the hill beside the house - you find an ancient mill right at the seaside. And there are many other walks and trips to do which are not that far away from The ard. In the village - also not far away - there is a little shop including a fuel station and the post office. Big supermarkets like Coop you'll find in Stornoway.
A must see is Calanais - the location of the Callanish Stones, a cross-shaped setting of standing stones erected around 2000 BC, one of the most spectacular megalithic monuments in Scotland. There is a modern visitor centre which provides information about the main circle and several other lesser monuments nearby.
It is hard to say what we liked best because we did not only like it but we fell in love with it and we will come back for sure!
A big thank you to Norma and Iain and we hope the Outer Hebrides will not change to much because it is perfect as it is!

The most tranquil place on Earth.

Left on 04/01/2012 for a stay in March 2012

We spent one week here in March 2012, and fell in love with the place.

The cottage and its surroundings complement each other in the most balanced way. The cottage itself is a new building unlike some which are older properties however it is not overly hi-tech, but has more than enough to make you superbly comfortable. The perfect balance.
There is ample cooking utensils and the electric cooker works great. There is a fridge which holds enough for a good few days for a couple of people. Plenty of cupboard space for tins and packets etc'. The dining table has a nice view looking down to the water, as does an outside table with 4 chairs (take a jumper for the evenings though, this isnt the Caribbean after all). This outside area is perfect for a bit of star-gazing on the clear nights.

The main bedroom has an en-suite toilet with shower, all of which are fine. There is also a bath with the jets of water which is very relaxing after a day on your feet. There is a front bedroom with 2 single beds. All of the beds are nice and comfortable, and give you a good sleep.

The owners live next door and are extremely welcoming, and extremely friendly. There is always a little bit of sceptecism when you are renting somewhere within view of the owners/hosts, but with the ard they are spot on and privacy is very well respected by all which is a delight.

I will not go into attractions as everyone has their own wishes, needs and wants for a holiday, but The ard is a thoroughly relaxing and warm place to base yourself for any activities you may wish to do on Bernera & Lewis.

I for one will return, the whole place is to me, just perfect and an example of how life should be led.

      Lovely cottage

Left on 01/25/2012 for a stay in November 2011

The cottage is in a really great location- it feels really tucked away, and yet you are on the edge of a village and within easy reach of lots of interesting sights and lovely beaches. The terrace outside is wonderful- magnificent views and outdoor seating (weather permitting of course!). Even if the weather isn't at its best, the way the comfy sofas are arranged in front of the patio doors means you can enjoy the views from the warm and dry. And the bed is just wonderful...like sleeping on a cloud! Norma and Ian are really friendly and really eager to help- from lovely touches like homemade scones and a welcome basket of local produce on arrival, to recommendations of things to do, and if you did have a problem they did all they could to help. There's also loads of information in the cottage of things to do and local events. I'd definitely recommend it and the local area. We went to Uists and Lewis in November and were very lucky to have 2 weeks of almost all dry weather. If you're happy to risk the weather and are prepared that many tourist attractions are closed it is a beautiful quiet time to visit.

From the moment we arrived we were treated incredibly well, Norma & Iain made everything so easy for us and made us feel so welcome. The ard has such a lovely homely feel to it, you could easily stay indoors...if the stunning scenery didn't entice you out! We still have really happy memories of our holiday in the ard months later.
Great Bernara is perhaps the most relaxing area of Lewis we have stayed in, and the ard more than met our expectations. There was plenty of room for the four of us, including two teenage girls, and the excellent bathroom facilities were invaluable. The wii and wifi were the icing on the cake. The deck and the living room were both perfect places to gaze at the lovely view and watch the amazing sunsets.
Norma had worked hard to provide everything we could wish for, and was always available when we needed advice. The standard of the accommodation was excellent; we felt pampered and special.
Lewis is a very special place. We went feeling tired and stressed. The island and the ard both helped us to relax and thoroughly enjoy our holiday.

      A brilliant getaway

Left on 01/11/2012 for a stay in August 2011

We booked The ard because we wanted a quiet, get-away-from-it-all holiday. It delivered exactly what we were looking for. The accommodation is first-class, very well presented and easily big enough for us - that's 2 adults, and children 13, 10 and 6.

Norma and Iain are first-class hosts - ready to welcome us and settle us in, and available to dispense advice on the local area - but allowed us complete privacy otherwise.

The local area is stunning - views over Loch Roag from the property are amazing. And a few minutes drive to Bosta Beach, which along with all the other beaches in Lewise / Bernera, is huge, pristine and deserted.

      Overall - absolutely excellent.

Left on 01/06/2012 for a stay in June 2011

We had a fantastic time at the ard. There were so many positives for us I'm struggling to know where to start.

The Great Bernera location was an excellent base for exploring both Lewis and Harris. We squeezed a lot into our time there -Ness to Tarbert- but could easily have found more to do with a second or even third week.

The accomodation and facilities at The ard really are first class. Frankly, I doubt I'd have been disappointed with the same standards in a top starred hotel. The owners have clearly invested a lot of time and effort and should rightly be proud of their hard work.

We're both fairly active, outdoorsy, people and the self-catering option was a flexible and perfect choice for us.

We liked the fact that the hosts were warm, friendly and readily available for advice on the very few occassions we sought it. Conversely, we appreciated they gave us to relax and chill out in such a beautiful setting. I know from previous holiday experiences elsewhere this is a difficult balance to achieve and our hosts pitched it perfectly.

Will be back and would recommend the ard unreservedly.

Luxury cottage on the beautiful island of Bernera

Left on 01/05/2012 for a stay in August 2011

The ard is superbly equipped, sparkling clean and extremely comfortable. The owners are very welcoming and helpful without being interfering. No matter the weather the views are great and with a community cafe/museum, the beautiful beaches and scenery our stay was never dull. We loved the feeling of escape and freedom. We have already booked for summer 2012 as we enjoyed our stay so much in one of Scotland's best kept secrets.
