Great location, & 60 spiral stairs to exercise on

Left on 04/09/2013 for a stay in March 2013

Great location & terrace fabulous, superb views. Just a bit cold to use it much.
Heating in flat great, but would have appreciated warmer bed covers so we could turn it off at night as was stuffy.
If I could change something I would have liked a larger fold out bed, it was tiny, so I had to sleep there with my daughter, so larger son and husband could have the bed.

Initially challenging with suitcases, then a good form of exercis!

Perfect location, but flat needs some work

Left on 11/02/2012 for a stay in October 2012

The location is perfect. 50m from 2 different tram stops on the T1 line. Great views, lots of restaurants just across the street. Be warned, there are 4 flights of steep stairs (as in most bulidings in Sultanahmet), so not recommended for elderly or physically impaired.

As mentioned in an earlier review, the drain in the shower has a smaell. This disipated somewhat after a couple of days, but the shower leaks onto the floor, and backs up (slow drain) as well. I feel that the smell is due to the slow drain and standing water trapped beneath the shower floor.

I cannot recommend this flat until the items mentioned are fixed. If the shower was not in bad shape, I would recommend this flat without question.

      Dear Mr.David,

First of all thank you for your review and thanks for your good words. Regarding to drain, as it was top season when you are staying, technician had given the appointment for other week and also it would take some time to fix, so as we also told it to you, we especially didnt fix it in order to not to disturb you during your stay.

However it is surely fixed as soon as you left the apartment, it is with no problem now.

So, i hope to host you again in this apartment and hope to drink our own produced wine in our wonderful bophorus and marmara sea-view terrace.

      Kind regards,

      Aykut

Terrace & location worth it; apartment good but has drawbacks.

Left on 05/20/2012 for a stay in April 2012

Initially found on Homeaway.com, and rented via Thomas-Ay Group. After extensive emailing back and forth about # of stairs (my sister has ms) we were assured there were only 11 stairs. Truth is the apartment is at the top of the building up 4 flights of narrow circular stairs with very little handrail support. The 11 stairs were from the apartment level up to the roof terrace. I had a turkish friend read the emails - she agreed they were cryptic. Also - apartment is not 1 bedroom, but a largish studio. The pictures are accurate and the apartment is clean and relatively updated. 4 people would be difficult to sleep unless you have small children on the couch (or small adults for a short stay). Bed is a king, and comfortable. There are no furniture on the balcony - you have to take the furniture from inside to sit on. Bit of a problem sometimes with smell from bathroom drain. Kitchenette was fine - hot plate needs updating since it works very slowly. We did ok for breakfast and warming up leftovers but don't plan to cook. In two weeks we only got the room cleaned once which was disappointing. We asked for a broom and the owner did provide one for us. Also - the description on all the different sites showed a washing machine - but there is no washing machine. Also, shows a hair dryer, but there is none.
On the plus side: The apartment owner had his office on the same floor and he was very helpful, accomodating etc. They helped us get our luggage up, and the van driver took them down at the end. There is an entry way between the apt door (which locks) and the office and then a locking door out to the stair and the way up to the terrace. We felt very secure. Given the apt is small it was very nice to have the small balcony to get outside, tho it has many large windows so very light. Double glazed windows and dark drapes makes sleeping fine. The tram is electric so you really don't hear it or the restaurants across the street at night. Terrace is as shown - amazing and wonderful. Your chair cushions are under the bed - you have to take back and forth - we left ours up and tried to take them down on rainy days. Modern bath - great shower but as I said a problem with slow drain and that may be why hte drain smelled once in a while.
My sister with ms/cane was able to adjust to the stairs with some difficulty, and it did affect our stay, but having the terrace and balcony (weather was great for 11 of our 15 days stay), was completely worth it. And, while the table inside was cramped (no way 4 could sit at it unless you pulled it in the middle of the room), there was free wireless and TV (tho we didn't watch the TV). Would we recommend? Yes - for people who can/are willing to do 4 flights, since the Terrace really adds a lot in nice weather, and we enjoyed having a glass of wine and relaxing there. Bad weather the apartment will get small feeling since you have no way to get away from one another - like a large hotel room. Balcony is nice, if small and you can get the dining room chairs in/out. Very convenient to public transportation and the "old town" sites. Nice restaurants all over. Not so much grocery though. No self-serve laundry but a laundry service priced by the kilo. Thumbs up based on the caveats above.

      Dear Janelle,

First of all, we are very happy to host you and hope to see again. You were very friendly and enyojable guest of us.

Thank you for positive parts of your review. Regarding to climbing stairs, it was bad that you havent known that there was no elevator in the building. However, it is on 3th floor and i guess you ll have no problem if you didnt have a knee problem. I hope you ll ve your health soon also ..

About cleaning, as we ve staff in the building during day time, we communicate with you and send our cleaning lady after you ask. Because especially lots of arabic guests dont want cleaning lady for privacy, that's why we need request of cleaning. However we can even send each day if customer needs, it is not a problem. About washing machine, it is just in the entrance of building with very small amount of money, so we especially didnt put washing machine inside of apartment to have more space for our guests.

Anyway, thank you for your objective review overall. As you also mentioned, it is in the most expensive and best avenue of Sultanahmet. And terrace has both bosphorus and marmara sea-view.

      Hope to host you soon.

      Kind regards,

      Ulga

Amazing views in an awesome location!

Left on 09/19/2011 for a stay in July 2011

The service and corespondance with these people was excellent, they were all very efficient throughout the booking process and stay. The flat itself was very nice, clean and comfortable. This was my first time to Istanbul, not knowing the city at all. The flat was in the most perfect location, short walking distance to many attractions including the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, and both bazaars (Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar). The roof-top terrace has outstanding views of the city, water, and a commanding view of the Hagia Sofia. There were 2 grocery stores and many restaurants and shops right on the block. I highly recommend this flat and district if you want to be in the center of the historic sights in Istanbul.

Perfectly Located for Sight-seeing, and a Lovely apartment!

Left on 09/12/2011 for a stay in March 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 5 days this past March and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The apartment is located on the main street in Sultanahmet and is only a few minutes' walking distance from major tourist sites. Restaurants nearby were good, and the tram stopped only a minute or two away when we started to feel more adventurous and wanted to travel to other areas. The weather was still chilly when we were there so we could not take advantage of the terrace, but the view was great. There are several narrow staircases to climb to reach the apartment, as its on the top floor, so I would not recommend this to anyone who has problems climbing stairs. The apartment itself is in great condition, and all the furnishings seem new and in "classic Ikea stile". Internet was also available, although we found it easier to connect at the Starbucks just across the street. The owner was also very helpful prior to our arrival and prompt with email. I would 100% recommend this to a couple visiting Istanbul to sightsee.

Left on 07/18/2011 for a stay in June 2011

This vacations were fantastics, and became better because of a good chose of the place to stay. The apartment had all the conditions that everyone wants to have, like a good view to the sea, good room temperature (not so cold and not so hot), cleaned room etc...
For sure i would like to repeat this expirience.

      Good location

Left on 06/27/2011 for a stay in June 2011

We stayed in the Sultanahmet apart. 4 days.

      Plus
      - location is perfect, close to all major attractions
      - transportation easy from doorstep
      - lots of restaurants and cafes
      - quiet
      - internet worked well
      - possibility to have personal driver pick you up at airport and bring you back (and he was on time)
      - shower worked well

      minus
      - no coffee maker, just a kettle to make instant coffee
      - no toilet paper on arrival (when you get there at 10PM, it's appreciated)
      - a couple of bedside lamps would be nice for people who like to read in bed
      - terrace has great views but, unlike photos on website, no cushions on chairs and not very well maintained
      - there are 64 pretty steep steps (no elevator) to get to the apartment
      - like in many other places we stayed, bed is too hard (we settled that matter two years ago by purchasing auto inflatable mattresses. We bring them everywhere we go and they help a lot.)
