Still Waters stands in striking complement to the wide spread of wilderness around it, a dramatic, contemporary one-story house built of stacked golden Wyoming stone with sky-high windows that both reflect and usher in the fantastic wild panorama in every direction. Though downtown Jackson is just minutes away, Still Waters feels remote, as quiet as its name. From both the monumental front portico and the back stone patio stretching the length of the house, the view rolls on over hundreds of acres of conserved land: buttes, grasslands, forest, the awesome surge of the Tet...ons.
Inside, in every room, Still Waters bears evidence of the land’s great influence. The stone-floored foyer opens to the great living hall as if to a forest clearing: the high vaulted ceiling and giant windows hold a luminous, airy space, anchored by a wide stone fireplace. Sculptures of birds in flight underscore the weightless, soaring feeling of the room.
Different sitting areas in the great room offer various retreats for reading, cocktails, games, puzzles and simply relaxing: couches are grouped before the broad stone hearth, club chairs and game tables wait front of a wall of glass, and a cozy television room is just off the living hall. Another alcove, wrapped with windows inspired by the arts-and-crafts movement, has a long dining table that seats 14 and high-backed chairs whose elegant lines echo the tall windows and the towering trees beyond.
Still Waters’ kitchen is both a gathering place and a central axis – from the open, light-filled space, doorways lead to a private guest suite, a laundry and storage area, a powder room and the bar and butler’s pantry. The kitchen is filled with top-notch amenities to make every day meal prep both luxurious and fun: a huge wine cooler, double ovens, a range set in the center island with a view across the dining room and out to the mountains. Natural stone floors and burnished wood cabinets add a warm, organic note to the streamlined space.
Two wings of the house extend from Still Waters’ foyer: the east wing, which leads to two guest rooms and the master bedroom; and the west wing, which leads to the pantry, kitchen and mudroom. Book shelves filled with art and sculpture extol the wonders of the American West. The office stands right off the foyer, a warm, intimate room with a generous desk and two leather club chairs. A glass door opens to the terrace, fringed by pasturelands and ponds and the great stony Tetons.
The master bedroom waits at the end of the east wing. Gracious fringed armchairs, wool carpeting and an antique rug add warmth and texture to the airy room. The four-poster king bed has a fabulous view out over the back terrace to hundreds of protected acres, where local wildlife – eagles, coyotes, moose, elk, wolves, fox – quietly passes by. A gas fireplace ignites at the touch of a button. Perhaps most luxurious of all, Still Waters’ master suite has generous his-and-her dressing rooms, each of which leads to a private bathroom of its own. The gentleman’s bath has a black marble vanity, a walk-in shower and a television mounted next to the mirror; the lady’s bath has a soaking tub and a glass shower.
The two guest rooms in the east wing of this fabulous Jackson Hole vacation rental are spacious, welcoming, carpeted rooms, each with a full private bathroom and big closet. The first is perhaps the more feminine and glamorous of the two, with a mirrored dresser and silvery slipper chair; the bed faces a bank of tall windows. The second bedroom is warm and inviting, with rich wood tones and an upholstered bed outfitted in white linen.
A third guest suite, simple and elegant, waits just off the kitchen and main living area. With its private egresses to the terrace and mudroom, this space offers a bit of privacy and independence from the rest of the house, perfect for a nanny or visiting family or friends. There is a private bathroom with a walk-in shower; the windows and glass door frame a close-up view of the outdoor fireplace, for nodding off to the glow of the flames. Long white drapes may be pulled across for privacy.
Still Waters’ expansive terrace is a place to linger in any season. The outdoor fireplace invites hotdog and marshmallow roasts and conversations lasting late into the starry night. River willows fringing the seasonal stream attract browsing moose. Trumpeter swans glide across the ponds; bluebirds and humming birds bejewel the meadows in the summer months. This luxury Jackson Hole rental home has huge hammocks for lounging, and bikes for pedaling the beautiful, safe bike path to town, to the park or even all the gorgeous way to Teton Village. Walk over to Spring Creek with fishing rods or inner tubes - or both! – for an unforgettable day of pure joy.Read more
