We had a great time at Horizon Cottages, this was our last stop of 3 in Jamaica and with no doubt our favorite. it is a Cottage right on the sea front, with the most amazing view. you have your own private small beach, well equipped kitchen and beautiful verandah, perfect for romantic couples. the people that manage the property are nice and kind and will make sure you have everything you need.
      We will be back!

      A Hidden Slice of Paradise

Left on 01/10/2013 for a stay in November 2012

From the moment the large green wooden doors opened and we drove into the yard at Horizon Cottages, we knew this was right up our alley. The owners Mary and Esua were there to greet us along with Obama their dog, and Trevor and Lagga, their two wonderful staff.
The view out to sea was gorgeous and the grounds were well kept and manicured. We had rented the Sea Ranch cottage and the other cottage, Rasta ranch was vacant during our stay there. The cottage was very rustic but very much to our liking. As long time visitors to Jamaica, but our first stay in Belmont we truly loved the cottage. The front porch was open and very comfy for relaxing anytime of the day. We also loved the Jetty which was also another comfy spot for kicking back and using the wireless internet if you so desired. Being an avid photographer, I liked getting my photos downloaded while there.

We had our own vehicle so heading to Bluefields or Whitehouse for groceries and food was never a problem. Paul's jerk shop across the street had great chicken which we picked up a couple of times during our stay.

The cottage is fully equiped with everything you would ever need, and we did cook our own breakfasts and made our own coffee everymorning. We would sit in the morning relaxing in the comfy adirondack chairs watching the fisherman head out for their morning catch. Being a fishing community, there was never a shortage of birds flying by.

We decided to have Lagga cook for us and the food was fabulous. Trevor prepared the callallo and entertained with his guitar as Lagga cooked up the fish that we bought. We picked up all the vegetables in Whitehouse and ended up with two delcious nights of food along with a pot of fish soup. We had the boys eat with us...and the rest of the evening was filled with guitar strumming, singing and lots of laughs.

We will definitely be back in Belmont at the Horozon Cottages. This property is really a 'well kept secret'...but one we would hightly recommend.

we've stayed here three times, and each time we relax even more. if you are looking for an all inclusive resort, try sandals. if you are looking for a small fishing village on the coast of jamaica, come here. mary and esau helped us by finding us a cook, and a driver for sightseeing. we had a ball.

Our stay at Horizon was a truly wonderful experience. The property was a tropical paradise, the view was spectacular, and all of the staff were lovely people dedicated to our having a great time.
The drive over the mountain was hair-raising. Get a driver, don't rent a car! Once you have gotten to horizon, arranging drivers to get anywhere you want is easy, no worries. Stop at Border Jerk stand on the way. Delicious jerk pork. And make the most of the drive, stop often. Every little stand along the way seems to offer a new culinary treat. Two pieces of advice. Get way more oranges than you ever think you will need. Hopi will squeeze them for you, and trust me, the juice is ridiculous. Also... if you never had bread fruit, get some. Laga works magic with them.
Defiantly eat as the locals do! A restaurant down the street has the best crab ever. And Laga, the cook with a gentile smile, can prepare you one succulent meal after another. The food was ridiculously fresh. If you are someone who prides themselves on eating local, it doesn't get better than this. The fish was caught that morning, the fruit copious and ripe. The coffee, the dairy, even the sugar was within miles.
Trevor can take you fishing. Go. More sightseeing than fishing, you will troll around the cost and watch the sun rise over the jungle. And if you are a novice snorkeler like me, he is the most gentile coach.
There is a coral reef right out your front porch. The water is crystal clear, the view spectacular, and tourists scarce. Everyone else you see out at the reef are fishermen, spear fishing or collecting traps.
If you want a vacation to get away from the tourists and the hustle, this is it. Miles of unspoiled cost, the rainforest runs right up to the shore line with a few houses tucked in here and there. Experience it before the masses discover it.

This is what I hoped Jamaica would be.

Left on 04/20/2012 for a stay in March 2012

When we arrived we went through the gate and were first impressed about how homey this place felt. There were a couple of cottages in the back yard, both right up against the water. The one we stayed in was kind of like an infinity pool -- no matter where you sat in there, you look out toward the sea and that's all you can see. After a long and perfect afternoon nap, we cooked up some lobsters and rice in the modest but completely functional kitchen and downed them with some Red Stripe.

The cottages share a small private beach which opens up to the Caribbean. While much of the southern coast is ravaged by riptides and strong currents, this beach is so tranquil at times that you can't even hear waves splashing. The sea can be like glass, and it's all yours here. There's also amazing snorkeling right out on the reef about a quarter-km away.

Not long after arrival, it became clear to us that the crew here was like a team of concierges who would make sure that we had whatever we needed. During a nice visit and chat session, Lagga sold us on the local snapper he said he'd get in the morning and offered to cook our supper the following night. He cooked it up and there was only one other time that I had snapper that good -- the next time he cooked it for us -- complete with rice and peas, bammies and calaloo in the local style.

If you like being secluded and just need a place to kick back, you really don't even need to leave. All of the comforts of home are here and what's not there will be brought to you for an extremely modest fee if you like. If you prefer to get out and see more of Jamaica nearby, there are restaurants, beaches, natural attractions like the Black River and mountain excursions, and every practical place you could possibly need within a reasonably close distance: grocery store, pharmacy, etc. If you have a car, you can park it safely here. If not, taxis are abundant and there's quite a bit to do within walking distance.

Before I close with my most heartfelt recommendation for these cottages, I want to note that while we were pampered and never wanted for anything here and felt completely confident that the hosts and their crew would make anything right, this is not for people who want the experience of an air conditioned all-inclusive resort. It's not designed by a corporate marketing team. There's no satellite TV and the nearest Margaritaville is in the MoBay airport. It will feel like a home. It will feel Jamaican and you will succumb to its wonderfulness.

This is a place for people who just want a taste of how hospitable, comfortable, tranquil and irie Jamaica can really be. Before we left, we were already asking ourselves when we can next come back to this place which made me completely love Jamaica.

Idyllic place to unwind, unplug and read some great novels in the shade of your porch overhanging the Caribbean. Lagga is a fabulous cook. Ask him to prepare some yellow snapper. Yum! The place is a bit remote but the benefit is you'll get a taste of real Jamaica. We don't usually vacation in the same spot twice, but we are hoping to make an annual pilgrimage to the Sea Ranch cottage. Respect.

      Paradise!

Left on 11/06/2011 for a stay in September 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Horizon Cottages to celebrate our honeymoon. We were expecting paradise and we were in no way disappointed! We were greeted at the airport by Shirley, the property manager. She was terrific! She was so welcoming and friendly. It was a great way to start our trip. Not only did she take the time to take us to a local supermarket to do some grocery shopping, but she stopped at some of the local stands on the way to sample some fresh Jamaican fruit. (We highly recommend the honey bananas!) After a beautiful 45 minute drive though the island, we arrived to the cottages.

We were blown away by the setup! There are two small, private beaches tucked neatly away in a small cove. Roughly 1 mile from the beach is a massive reef that acts as a natural breaker, so the water between the reef and the beach is calm and pristine. And the "yardies" were exceptional! The very charming Hopi, the housekeeper, made sure our cottage was well stocked and very clean. Laga provided us with several amazing meals consisting of fresh seafood and other local foods. And Trevor kept the yard looking great and played the guitar for us. Everybody was so accommodating and made sure all of our requests were fulfilled, exceeding all of our expectations!

We would highly recommend Horizon Cottages to anyone who wants to experience a relaxing trip off the beaten path and enjoy some true local culture, food, and hospitality.
We are already planning a trip to visit them again!

My sister and I stayed at the wonderful, peaceful, creative, comfortable Sea Ranch Cottage for 10 days the end of June. We have never had such an experience. The cottage is well equiped with everything you need to survive a tropical vacay, blender for drinks in the evening and a coffe grinder and french press for coffee in the am Oh and a juicer of course, the common kitchen is set up for meal preparation. However we had Laga cook most our meals !!Omg!! or we ate at Dorettes or the cook shop across the road, we did not go hungry. =) There are no screens so take bug spray, buy coils there to burn and use the net for the bed at night. My only recomendation would be to add a fan to the porch. The property sits between the road and the sea and is secure with a wall around it, there is traffic sounds during the day but at night all you hear is the sea and a Reggae beat in the dark. It also has its own little beach, approx 10 steps from the blender to the sand! There are no Tv's, phones, or aircondition, these are not complaints!! Unplug, relax people, =) But there is WiFi available most days by the main house if you must. There are no resorts or large night clubs here, but you will find great people and peace. You will leave here a different person. If you can ever bring yourself to leave that is!

This has become my absolute favorite spot in Jamaica. A small, comfortable cottage right on the water. Your own little cove to swim, kayak, play. Fishermen came right up to offer fresh fish, lobster, conch, or drive you out to the reef for snorkeling (which is tremendous there). The community is very cool (it's right down the road from Peter Tosh tomb). Not easy to get wine or groceries there, but Dorette's down the road had the best food I've ever had in Ja. Loved this place and will be back again.

What a fantastic find! The sound of the sea surrounds you, whether inside or out. The porch is fantastic as the sun can get really hot and it remains shaded throughout the day. The caribbean sea sparkles and is an incredible colour of blue. For you own " stop the world I want to get off" experience this could not be better. There was no-one else other than us and the staff there. We had our own "private beach" kayaks to go exploring with and the staff there were an absolute delight. The kitchen was equipped well for self catering and the fridge large enough for numerous Red Stripes and other essentials. We loved the outside shower ( I tend to find that with inside showers in the tropics you tend to attract a lot of mosquitos) no such problem with an outside one. The accomdation was rustic and charming. There are a few restaurants close by or the staff will cook for you for a small charge. We watched the pelicans and sea birds diving and didn't need binoculars as they were so close by. I cannot begin to recommend this enough. Having been to Jamaica now at least once a year for the past 9 years this really was the most fantastic "Get away from it all and chill" resort I have ever been to.

I can't say enough positive things about Sea Ranch. The boundaries between outdoors and indoors that are so clearly defined in the U.S. are absolutely fluid on island, and at Sea Ranch in particular. The sea was a constant, soothing companion throughout our stay. I have never slept better. Our cottage was cozy and delightful. We loved the mosquito netting around the bed, and the outdoor shower was a truly luxurious and enjoyable treat.
However, as wonderful as the property is, it was the people at Sea Ranch that made my vacation so memorable. Laga and Travor were friendly and open from the start and we spent the majority of our time with them. They were so generous with sharing their way of life with us. We snorkeled and watched Travor spear a lobster with his spear gun. They took us into the hills to the most celebratory church experience of my life. They invited us to their village and showed us around, picking herbs and plants along the way for us to smell and taste and learn of their restorative properties. We played and sang reggae music on our verandah for hours. Laga cooked for us and every dish was amazing. Hopi was a lovely person and always willing to sit a spell for a cool drink and some laughs. Carolyn gave us some extremely relevant cultural insights and was a lovely host. Locksley was charming to a fault and made us laugh and feel happy from the moment we were in his presence. We all talked and laughed and ate together and shared in a way which was pure joy.
Sea Ranch is not where you want to go if you are interested in tourist areas full of shops and services. However, if you want to see things that were not manufactured for your consumption, to learn things you never knew were possible, to enjoy sharing and laughing and living with a full and open and happy heart, I can't think of a better place to stay. I'm forever grateful to everyone for their hospitality and for changing my perspective in the most positive way imaginable.

I believe the time we had at Horizon was not only the best vacation we've personally experienced, it is THE best vacation ANYONE has ever experienced! The cottages are clean, spacious and comfy. The balcony of Sea ranch is so close to the water, the waves mirror on the ceiling. The constant sound of waves gently rocked our mellow days.
The property is walled in and very private and secure. Belmont is a beautiful community with lots of beautiful people.
Mary and Esau (the owners) are fabulous people. We really enjoyed spending time with Hopi as well as with Trevor and Lagga, the yardies, who also took us fishing (we both caught tuna! Yum!)
There are kayaks available and they just glide so well without much effort at all. We went to the reef about a mile out and snorkeled around at our own leasure. Nobody there.
A two minute walk to the West is a little place called "Dorrett's", where you can get the best crab backs E-V-E-R. Her cooking warmed our hearts.

We are already dreaming about coming back. There, you are sure to only get the true jamaican laid back experience. No resort. No mask. No fake. Only good vibes and pure relaxation.

      Best Time Ever.

Left on 07/30/2009 for a stay in July 2009

Seldom in life is anything truly perfect - and it may just be a condition of time that we grow used to accepting mediocrity when really we desire the grandiosity of fantasy. Such was the case for our visit to Sea Ranch. It began with an impossible dream: to escape for a weekend, leave the city behind, and lose ourselves in an other-world of our own make-believe. And it was only after we returned four days later did I finally realize that the impossible had been lived. We arrived in Jamaica with no problems, got picked up with a smile in an air-conditioned van, and rode through lush country side to our destination. Had Saint Peter been there you would've recognized the gates, for what they opened to was truly heaven on earth: a setting sun upon a crystal seascape, caressed by manicured lawn, shaped by two bungalows, two docks, and a gazebo - simplicity never looked so good. The time had no measure, but within its amorphous counting we did nothing and everything: lounged, relaxed, meditated and kayaked, snorkeled, and tanned. The water was never farther than inches from our feet, and the staff was never anything but friendly and accommodating. Their cooking outdid my own, leaving me with tastes on the tongue I will never forget. And those memories will forever dance in my mind amidst a pristine set: the quaintest cabin, the most natural outdoor shower, the most comfortable porch, the warmest water. Though an escape, to be there was by no means an act of departure, but rather an experience of return - return to nature, return to love, return to self. Even as I write this, the feeling of soft sand courses between my toes, warm breeze jets through my hair, and fragrant aromas play amidst my nostrils. I am there, despite being so very much here. And it is for this reason that I will always go back when I need a perfect vacation. For this reason, that it was the best time ever.
