Left on 11/07/2012 for a stay in October 2010
Lovely family run chateau, enormous grounds, plenty of facilities - indoor and outdoor pools. Both traditional and modern accomodation available. We have stayed here several times, love it. Great for families. Puy du Foy (a kind of french history based theme park) is a lovely mid-week visit.

Left on 10/17/2012 for a stay in October 2012
If you need to get away from it all this is the place to go to! although we stayed out of the main season there was still lots to see around the region, lots of good walking, the roads were very quiet and we even put in some sunbathing and had a swim in the covered pool. Chateau Vary steeped in an interesting past would be an exciting place to stat, we stopped in the adjacent converted buildings which gave us lots of space. If you need more than basic essentials a car is advisable to buy provisions or perhaps visit other areas of the Loir. We hope to be back again in 2013.

LondonA lovely place to unwind
Left on 09/16/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Three families stayed in the upper level of the chateau for a week. Plenty of room and plenty to do for the young children. The local area is good to explore, but really the chateau and its grounds are enough to keep you occupied for most of the time. The large balcony with barbecue and beer fridge was a nice touch - and the children loved the pools, the sandpit, the woods and the extremely friendly and docile dogs. The hosts were always on hand and very helpful too. I can't recommend it enough really - everyone left saying what a lovely break they'd had.

Left on 09/10/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We recently came back from our 2nd trip to Chateau Vary, this time the boys were older and could really make use of the outdoor facilities.
As soon as we arrived, they introduced themselves to the other children and were off playing in the sandpit, which my youngest made his own!
This is an ideal holiday if you have active children, as there is so much for them to do and they can roam free safely.
Having Sam there was a godsend. We can't thank him enough for playing with the children and keeping them occupied whilst we dined with the other families, tasted wine or relaxed after a BBQ.
There is plenty to do and see around the area, but the weather was that good when we were there, that, apart from going to the supermarket, we tended to stay put and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Would definalty recommend to anyone with children and we loved it so much we have already booked for next year.
Thanks to Paul and Benidicte who were great hosts. -

We had a great holiday. There was lots for the children to do (swimming, cycling, football, badminton, table tennis). There was also a children's club in the evenings run really well by Sam, and our children (who don't normally like clubs like this) didn't want to miss a single minute of these!
Benedicte and Paul were excellent hosts, very friendly and helpful. For example we decided to play cricket, and as we were setting up Benedicte drove over on a lawnmower and offered to cut a proper strip for us to play on! Fantastic service. Would definitely recommend this as a wonderful holiday venue. -

What can I say, other than "wow!". The chateau is in a great location and the grounds are beautiful. We stayed in the converted stables and it wanted for nothing; fully equiped would be an understatement. The owners and their assistant are very welcoming and really made us feel at home. I very much hope to return in the future.

just returned from 2 wonderful weeks at Chateau Vary. The unpretentiousness of the place lends itself to relaxation. So many beautiful memories, borrowing 2 of the bikes to cycle around the evocative countryside, hosting lunch parties for the new but very firm friends our children made and of course the wonderful dining in nights. A special thanks to Paul and Benedicte for making us so welcome and to Sam for entertaining the children. We're definitely booking for next year!

After a couple of days at Chateau Vary we were all relaxed and well away from the hustle of the UK. We all enjoying walking the grounds, swimming in both pools using the chess set and ball games with all of the children. Paul and Bernadette are great hosts and make the whole holiday experience, from the wine tasting on the first night to the group meals, Sam entertaining the children. Great base, close to Saumer and angers. A real lasting holiday to remember, better book for next July before too many people find out about this Loire secret!

We had a great week at Chateau Vary. The grounds are beautiful with masses of space and lots of woodland walks. It's like having a park for your back garden!
We stayed in La Sellerie, which was very spacious, although we missed having a shower.
Benedicte and Paul are fantastic hosts, and we really enjoyed the wine tasting evening and getting to know the other guests, and the meal Paul cooked was delicious. They have created a perfect holiday location with a very friendly atmosphere.
I would definitely recommend Chateau Vary (and not just for young families!) -

Left on 07/15/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Was meeting up with family from Canada and drove down from Calais (4.5 hours!) not realising you can actually fly to angers airport (about 20 mins from the Chateau) from London City airport! That said the place is fantastic, very well appointed in lovely grounds with lots of room for everyone. We stayed in the apartment in the main house that has the huge terrace that is partially covered and was a great place to congregate for several glasses of wine in the afternoons/evenings, especially as the weather wasn't particularly kind to us. Paul & Benedict are excellent hosts, with a wine tasting evening and a couple of evenings per week when they cook for everyone who is staying (if they wish to attend, of course). While I was there it was a very sociable group and the food and company was great. Sam runs a 'kids club' , several evenings a week from 6 til 8, which is such a good idea as it gives the adults a break and tires the kids out nicely! You do need a car but there are lots of chateaux to visit and various other things to appeal to everyone round about. The baker who comes 5 mornings had a large selection of breads, pastries, sweets etc and nothing was too much trouble for Paul & Benedict to sort out from recommending places to visit to fixing plugs and changing light bulbs!

We are always nervous about holidays given we have 20 month old twins - it seems most places we find struggle with providing all the parafenalia that comes with 'Monkey see' and 'Monkey do' - however! Chateuax Vary came up trumps! Cots (yes, proper cots and not travel cots!), High chairs, play area, a warm pool and lots of walks in the forest to keep them constantly entertained! This is truly is a beautiful place - so quiet and well respected by all - including the owners (Not a day went by where you didn't frequent Jean (the owners father_ frequenting the grounds, tidying up, checking all things were perfectly in place. The only down side for us was the weather - although the sun did decide to put its hat on during the latter half of the week. I would definately recommend this place to couples and families with very young children whom you want to feel you can 'set free' in a relaxed, safe environment. Providing there is availability we will be returning next year for sure!

Cambridge, UKWell appointed, generous sized accomodation in delightful settin
Left on 09/11/2011 for a stay in September 2011
There is a choice of accomodation at Chateau Vary, and we were in "Ecurie", which has 3 double bedrooms located in the converted stables (I believe) to the main grand house. We were my wife and I (in our 70s) and our daughter and her partner.
The accomodation was generously sized, with an open-plan downstairs containing a good kitchen (plenty of utensiles, cooker, washing and dishwashing machines, a generous dining area, and a large and comfortable lounge area with a fairly small TV with a very extensive range of UK programmes (but not BBC 4) and a DVD player with films available to hire. The 3 bedrooms and main bathroom were upstairs. The heated and covered swimming pool and another open air pool were available for use by all residents, and the grounds were extensive. It seems ideal for families with children, but good for us as well.
A baker calls around 9 to 9.30am with baguettes and croissants 5 days per week. The site is fairly isolated, the nearest village (Jarze), containing a few small shops including a small but friendly general store, being about 2 miles away. The nearest 'proper' supermarkets are about 8 miles away at Saiche and Bauge (one, the latter I think, open on Sunday). We had our main restaurant meals out at midday on our sightseeing travels and dined at home in the evenings, and so did not try the several local restaurants recommended.
Chateau Vary is located towards the western end of the Loire Valley, and reasonably close to angers, Saumur and Tours, and it was easy and enjoyable to visit several chateaux, markets etc in the area. We also visited Vendome and Blois, although these were a little further away - about one to one and a half hours drive away. In a week were were not able to see everything we wished, and I would like to visit again but staying more to the east, to cover the areas we missed; if I do I hope I can find accomodation comprable to Chateau Vary. I thoroughly recommend the area and the accomodation.
A note for those motoring there. Avoid the two small non-restaurant refreshment stops on the a28. The southern one is poor, the northern one terrible! -

HailshamWe finally found it!
Left on 09/07/2011 for a stay in August 2011
I'm tempted to write how awful Chateau Vary was... just so that it doesn't get booked up when we want to go again! But alas, I feel that anyone with children (young and old) should know about this truly wonderful place.
Here, we found time to relax / read books / socialise... things which are all too often difficult to do on a holiday with children. With two children aged 6 and 8, my husband and I wanted to find somewhere that was secluded, yet had other families and children to mix with. We also wanted somewhere that could give our children the independence they crave, without us worrying about them constantly. This place delivered on every level and more.
So here are our favourite memories from our two weeks stay...
Paella and wine tasting in front of the beautiful chateau... amazing shooting stars... Sam playing guitar till the early morning... Sam hosting an hour long kids club at 7pm most days just when a glass of wine was needed... a rounders match with kids and parents being all too competitive... making some lovely new friends... building dens in the woods... playing lots of games with the children... the children letting us lie in while they got breakfast from the bread man and calling us down to breakfast! I could go on and on!
I can honestly say we loved this place to pieces, and will return probably until our children are taking their own children!
If I had one teeny criticism it would be the lack of a shower and a bed too short for my 6'2 hubby... but we know which choice of accommodation to go for next time now!
We hope you enjoy Chateau Vary as much as we did.

Chateau Vary is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking to unwind in beautiful tranquil surroundings.
They have 2 swimming pools one heated and one outdoor with lots to keep the children entertained, while you relax with a book or take part in table tennis, badminton or baseball to name a few.
There is a lot to do nearby Zoo, Caves, high ropes, woodland adventure, canoeing, sailing and many Chateau to visit which sometimes include a bit of wine tasting
Benedicte and Sam are wonderful hosts, the Children's Club and Paella nights are great fun and a nice opportunity to make friends with your fellow guests.

Our 5th year and and as usual our 4 and 6 year old boys spent so much time exploring and playing with their new friends we actually had a rest! The grounds were relaxing, the pool warm and the accomodation spotless. We have to mention the very impressive speed at which the microwave was replaced - it stopped working at breakfast and we had a brand new one by lunchtime! The games for the boys in the evening were fantastic and allowed us to fully appreciate Paul's wine recommendations over a leisurely dinner. We are about to book for a sixth time - I think that says it all.

Stunning, tranquil location. Kids' club was excellent and allowed the adults to eat in peace. The dine in nights were great and the owners were very hospitable. The accomodation was of a good standard, the only negative being the shower which was difficult to use without flooding the entire bathroom! Location is quite remote which is great for peace and escapism but you really do need a car to get out to supermarkets and restaurants.

We enjoyed a very relaxing week in the Ecurie, having received a free upgrade from a smaller apartment as there was availability. The grounds are lovely and the facilities for children are particularly good, especially the evening kids club.
One (very small) niggle was that we didn't realise there was an additional cleaning charge at the end of the stay or that we could choose to clean the apartment ourselves. We would prefer to pay a cleaning charge upfront as part of the overall cost and be confident that we are staying somewhere that has been professionally cleaned before each visit. Having said that, it would not put us off from visiting this lovely place again. -

My husband and I stayed in the Ecurie with our 6 year old and two elderly parents. My friends rented the adjacent home with an 11 year old. We wanted a setting suitable for all to relax, to visit Chateaus and medieval towns. This rental was perfect. Everyone's wishes were accomodated. The kitchen is well equipped and what you would expect from a rental. The house was spacious. We used the pools, playground and bicycles (enough for 8 of us to cycle to the next village.) There are nice forest trails to hike. The photos give a very good idea of what to expect. It would have been nice to be closer to a bigger active town but Bauge and angers are easy trips with a car. Benedicte and Paul are so lovely, hospitable and entertaining and their parents very warm and charming. We would have loved to spend more time with them. The area is excellent for visiting Chateaus and countryside (loads of fields full of sunflowers that remind you of a Van Gogh painting). Angers (20 min drive) has a nice center with lots of restaurants, terraced cafes, shops and cobblestone streets to explore. Tours is about 1 hour away and very historic and charming with a fabulous old center to explore architecture. Saumur is about 30 min. drive and in the center of lots of chateaux, vineyards and a zoo.

RickmansworthThe most amazing place for families to relax
Left on 05/08/2011 for a stay in July 2006
The first time my family and I went to Chateau Vary I was 8 years old, and my two younger brothers were 6 and 3. Having had such an amazing time and having made lots of friends, we wouldn't let our parents take us anywhere else on holiday except Chateau Vary for the next 8 or so years! The surroundings are beautiful and perfect for young children (and older ones!) to run around in complete safety. The pools were always a big hit for me and my brothers, and we spent most of our time in there messing around with other children. The last time I went to Chateau Vary I was 18 years old. I still had just as an amazing time however most of my time was spent sunbathing, relaxing and sampling the wine! From my parents point of view, they felt they could completely relax here and not have to worry about us. All the adults tended to get together in the evening with a few bottles of wine and watch us kids as we took part in the organised evening games. Everyone always really bonded throughout the week, as there were just the right number of families that everyone got to know everyone else.
We were always welcomed like we were old friends (which I guess we were by the 5th time we went!) and we were always completely satisfied with the accomodation (we always stayed in the stable blocks).
Chateau Vary has been a big part of my life as I was growing up, and I feel it really is the perfect place for a whole family to relax.Response from Mrs B Goodwin - 05/09/2011

Left on 04/27/2011 for a stay in September 2007
We have been reading the reviews for Chateau Vary as we are planning another trip from NZ to France in 2012. We have been lucky enough to stay there on 3 occasions (the last in '07) and were actually considering somewhere else for a change. However, all the good bits of Vary have come flooding back and we now know where we will be heading back to. The attraction of the pools, the wonderful park like areas to walk within, the games set up around the site, the wine tasting on the balcony, sightseeing around the Loire and the chance to play the local golf courses is too much to miss out on. We have always left Vary relaxed and refreshed due to the excellent service from the friendly owners who provide a hassle-free environment in which to do exactly what you are meant to do on holiday - relax and enjoy! From what we have read from the recent reviews this still seems the case; so decision made. We are booking for 2012!

Kinnerley, ShropshireFantastic child-friendly site.
Left on 04/25/2011 for a stay in July 2009
Set in a quiet, safe location, Chateau Vary is perfect for those with young children or even those wanting peace and quiet as the site is so spacious. With two pools, swings, woods to roam in, games to play and, best of all, an on-site student who arranges games in the evening for the children while the parents chat over a glass of wine (or two!).
This was our second visit. The Chateau is easy to find and only about ten minutes from a very large supermarket. Most notable places to vist with children (Puy de Feu, zoos) are a reasonable drive away and mean a long day out, but it tends to be worth it when you know you're coming back to such a restful place.
With such a relaxed atmosphere you very quickly get to know the other visitors- indeed we are still friends with a family we first met 4 years ago and met up with again on our last visit. Also Paul and Benedicte are on hand to offer any advice or help that you might need.
The accommodation is all well-appointed- we've only stayed in one particular unit, but have seen most of the others. They are all spacious with all you might need, though they can get quite cool in the evening.
Overall a great place to visit and stay- the kids want to go back again! -

Fantastic in every way, great games for the kids and a great social buzz within the resort, 2 pools, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor which made swimming available no matter the weather! We had some great walks and bike rides around the forest and local area, perfect destination for everything you could possibly need. Very friendly service and great value for money, we will be sure to be returning again very soon, thank you!

We had a fantastic holiday in Chateau Vary. Our accommodation, L'Ecurie was lovely - very spacious and perfect for our family of 6 which can be hard to find. The owner's son of 17 years ran games for the children every evening which was the highlight for our children. They also loved the freedom to roam the grounds, the woods and bikes to borrow and the play equipment. The indoor pool is warm enough to swim in even on cooler days. Our kids enjoyed playing with those next door and we enjoyed chatting to the other families and the owners who are very warm and friendly.

Had a superb week here in late October sunshine - t shirts and shorts all week. Great apartments but the real gem is the on site facilities and space - two swimming pools, kids playground, golf holes, boule, acres of woodland. Scarcely had to stray beyond the end of the drive except for fresh bread.
Will be back. -

All members of our family group, from the ten week old baby to the grandparents had a wonderful holiday. We were so content and relaxed that we hardly ventured far from the Chateau Vary. Our sports loving grandsons enjoyed the thoughtfully equipped grounds and they really enjoyed the evening sports. The Sauve family did their utmost to provide a wonderful setting and holiday experience.

We stayed at Chateau Vary for 2 weeks in august. We have 3 children - 12/10/7 and we were looking for somewhere which was quiet but had opportunities for the children to meet new friends and get involved in activities. We certainly found this at Chateau Vary. The children had a great 2 weeks meeting new friends and being entertained every evening with structured activities put on by the owners. We were happy to let them roam the extensive grounds as it was so safe. The adults also had a great social time, hosted brilliantly by Paul and Benedicte the owners, who did so much to ensure everyone happy. Great food from Curries to Bbq's were put on for all staying at the Chateau, plus wine tours and tasting just added to the great holiday experience.
We would defiently recommend this as a great place to stay and will be going back -

We spent a very enjoyable week at Chateau Vary in two of the Stable properties. Being relatively early season we had the whole place to ourselves with covered swimming pool, vast lawned grounds and a fair-sized wood for walks and exploring. There was so much space on the estate I could see no problem with it holding a full complement of guests. The accommodation was also spacious - the completely open-planned ground floor living-dining-kitchen area almost too much so - but I suspect great for a large party or for escaping the heat of high Summer.
There was plenty for our children to do in the grounds - a young children's playground, table tennis, outdoor chess and badminton as well as the two swimming pools. And all this in the middle of the Loire with all the grand chateaux and vinyards.
Thoroughly recommended! -

The Chateau is a lovely place to spend your holiday. You have the choice to use either the indoor or outdoor pool, play in the grounds and have the children occupied for an hour every evening with activities. The grounds are safe for the children to raom around as no cars are allowed to drive through (except on arrival day and the baker every morning to deliver fresh bread and croissants).

We have actually been going to Chateau Vary for a number of years and had an excellent experience each time. We started when our children were very young and found it very easy as all the home comforts are there for you. There is plenty for the children to do at the Chateau and lots of 'days out' within easy access. It's grest to share time there with friends as there is plenty of room. My kids love roaming the outdoors and making use of the swimming pool. Booking and travel was also easy and stress free!

This location is perfect for a group of friends or any families with children as the children play safely with lots to do (and looked after). There are great facilities including two pools and the apartments in the Chateau or converted barns are beautifully appointed and equipped. It is peaceful and so "Francais" with delivered croissants "au matin" lovely walks and bike rides and within easy reach of the chateaux and towns of the Loire valley.

Friendly family service. Beautiful surroundings. Lots of space for the younger children to run about. Always felt that they were safe. Great to have a play leader to keep them entertained. My teenage son enjoyed his stay with his friend as able to explore, swim and use the games facilities. Need to have access to a car to visit attractions.

We had an absolutely fabulous time!!! A great place if you have children. The grounds were beautiful and huge and the kids can run around free. The owners son ran childrens games every night at 8:00pm. They loved it so much that we had to schedule our days to be back for them. The kids ran around so free until late in the evening with all the other children. We had a very nice and relaxing time, we will definitely go back!!

a fantastic place for a large family group to get together. Plenty of activities on site to keep all ages happy. Pools are fab with the weather kind enough for us to make the most of the outdoor one. Most of us never left the site all week! Ma and Pa Sauve are the perfect hosts. Will definitely be back for more.

We have stayed twice in this part of the stable block, having also stayed in both other parts. Chateau Vary is a lovely place, the grounds are large and the two pools are fantastic for children. We have been there 4 times and even as older teenagers last year the children enjoyed the nightly games with all the visiting children . Benedicte and her family are always very friendly and English is spoken, and Monsieur always provides an enjoyable wine tasting. The cottages are all lovely and different, and we never need to have the TV on. There is a lot to see and do in the area, Anger, Fontaineblue, Saumur, Zoo de Due and various Chateaux. Highly Recommended

We had a fabulous week in the Upper Chateau - great rooms and a wonderful terrace. The facilities (pools, the Vary Open golf course, woodlands, table tennis, badminton etc) kept us very occupied. It is a great location, perfect in its own right but also in the right spot to strike out to destinations big (Villandry, Futuroscope, Saumur) and small (Helice Terrestre, Richard Rak's cave sculptures, the Tapestry of the apocolypse) and, er, alcohol laden (infinite vineyards). The other families and our wonderful hosts Benedicte, Paul and William take it to another level. I am now being viciously blackmailed by my family to make me go back next year. Oooh, ok then...

Chateau Vary is a small Chateau with rental only accommodation set in beautiful grounds. The setting was amazing. The kids (aged 4 and 6) were perfectly safe and could explore without us worrying. There were wooded walks, bikes, play areas, sand-pit, indoor heated and outdoor unheated pools. Owls hooted at night and the baker van called each morning with fresh baguettes & croissants.
We stayed in the lower appartment in the main Chateau. This was spacious and had a lot or charm. The only criticism is that the kids room had no interior style and kitchen area was damp - although no doubt this is to be expected in old buildings. Owners were delightful and happy to help. Loire region itself is quite vast so distances touring around were a bit long for the kids. Overall we had a great time and would definately return.

We have stayed here twice, once in the Chateau and another time in the Stables. Great venue to let the children roam free, they have the run of the chateau grounds, ride bikes and play with other guests' children. The Stables are modern, the chateau is very atmospheric.
