LondonA little Eden
Left on 05/17/2011 for a stay in April 2011
My partner and I were loathe to return home from this little sliver of paradise. The property is just a brisk drive away from Gibraltar but it feels like a different world.
The house itself is well appointed and spacious, with lots of air and light, and a wealth of tempting places to sit and drink or read. But the gorgeous garden on the terrace, the enchanting fish pond and fountain, and the pool, were the real stars for us.
We had a lovely welcome from the owner - a lady called Vilja - who made sure we were well cared for but it still felt very private. You quickly think of yourself as the lord of your own little castle.
A couple of days we walked the trail up into the spectacular national park, which begins literally where the boundary of the property ends. If you're energetic you can quickly climb quite high and appreciate some beautiful, craggy scenery.
And if the fancy takes you, there's a lovely bar in the town, which is an easy walk away. (Although we found less easy coming back, when it's dark and you're slightly worse for wear!)
There are plenty of other attractions in the surrounding area - though a car is probably a must to make the most of them. But even staying at the house itself for the whole week would have been fine by us - all in all, it was just a very relaxing place to be.
We went on the recommendation of a friend and though it was a slight stretch for our purse, we ultimately felt it was worth every penny. If we had had kids, it would have been even more so.
Final note - it helps if you like cats, because there are (very charming, half tame) strays everywhere. -

Melbourne, AustraliaA Time To Remember
Left on 04/13/2011 for a stay in August 2009
With couple of my grandchildren and two friends, we have spent an unforgettable two weeks in La Fuente Vieja, on the outskirts of a beautifully typical white Spanish village, called Jimena de la Frontera.
La Fuente Vieja is a gorgeous villa adjoining a national reserve park and a sparkling little river. It is tastefully and comfortably furnished, decorated with lovely artwork, a library to keep you busy in itself and kidney a shaped swimming pool.
We went horse riding, had long walks alongside of the river and climbed up a mountain, together with the local goats. We played some tennis and watched nearby a polo match, one of the best in Europe. Being there in august 7-21 2009, the weather was fantastic and the kids had a great time swimming in the river and the pool. We even did had some first class surfing in Tarifa, less than an hour's drive away.
Had gourmet meals in the village's numerous very good restaurants and at night plentiful cosy bars to finish the days. A special mention about our gracious and entertaining hostess, who did everything possible to make our stay a memorable one.
We will be back.

This is a beautiful house set in one of the more stunning locations in andalusia, and there are many!
The village of Jimena de la Frontera has some of the best restaurants in southern Spain and without exception all are spectacularly welcoming. The whole community buzzes but in an understated fashion. There is something for everyone and in July there is a wonderful music festival with some of the best modern and traditional flamenco music and street parties in Spain. (If this does not suit you, the villa is located in such a tranquil setting you will not be disturbed - join in or not, everything as you choose).
The house itself it quietly located on national heritage property in the most beautiful setting and is built in a hacienda style. The gardens are simply wonderful and your charming hostess has created a unique dream home, with swimming pool and some of the most comfortable beds around! (Incidentally if you have any questions she is always around to ask and is extremely helpful but never intrusive; no-one knows the area as she does). To sit outside on a summer's evening on the terrace or by the pool is to commune with nature. Everything is arranged for you, the visitor. You can have a sublimely quiet time there with your family and small children or party with your friends: it's all there. I have stayed in the house over the years and from the first time cannot wait until the next! Everything has been designed for maximum comfort in the most elegant of styles. This may sound full of superlatives but it is quite simply one of the warmest, most comfortable houses I have ever stayed in. I last visited in September 2010 and cannot wait to return in a couple of months' time. Anything I have to say cannot explain how marvellous it is, Go there! Don't forget your camera and you will have the holiday of a lifetime!

Paris - FranceAn enchanting villa
Left on 04/05/2011 for a stay in May 2010
We've come to La Fuente Vieja 3 times now and have recommended it to friends who have had the same magical holiday in this amazingly beautiful villa.
The house is stunning, spacious and authentic to the feel of andalucia. There are many different peaceful and beautiful corners in the house, the pool area and the gardens to enjoy peace and intimicy, a true magical setting.
You can go for walks along the river and enjoy a whole other set of fantastic spots to have a picnic and bond with nature.
The village is only a short walk away and filled with buzzy little bars, restaurants, lovely squares, cobbled charming streets and the inhabitants are very friendly.
Our hostess, Vilja, is very warm, welcoming and made sure we had all that was needed and plus. We loved our stay and will hopefully come back many more times to this home away from home.
