Rochester, New YorkVery attractive villa under excellent management
Left on 11/28/2012 for a stay in November 2012
We are a couple with three adult children (ages 21-24) who stayed in "Villa Sundowner" from November 13 through November 27. All three of our children joined us during this trip, though not at the same time. All five of us had an excellent, memorable holiday.
First, some comments about Jolly Harbour in general. Of the five of us, only Dad had been to antigua previously, spending a delightful two weeks at Sugar Ridge Resort (just across Valley Road from Jolly Harbour) in 2010. With the whole family participating this time, and with the kids coming for Mom's birthday (November 16) and the american Thanksgiving (November 22), we wanted to enjoy some family meals in addition to dining out. Since all three adult children live independently in different cities, the villa format was ideal for bringing us together as a family. Jolly Harbour gave us access to grocery shopping as well as an assortment of restaurants. We rented a golf cart for two out of the fourteen days (none of us really minded the .8 mile walk to the commercial center) and we sampled most of the area restaurants and bars. Mom and Dad also purchased a gym membership at Sugar Ridge, which we found to be a great value.
You should be aware that the North Finger villas are more than a mile from the South Finger beach. To get to the beach, you have to go down to the commercial center and back up to the other end of the harbor. If easy beach access is important to you, you will need a golf cart or a South Finger villa. Again, we do not mind the walk, and in fact we often walked or took bicycles to Ffryes Beach, three miles away. Few tourists come to Ffryes and it provides an idyllic, peaceful, pristine beach experience.
On to "Villa Sundowner" in particular. We found the villa clean, well-appointed, and tastefully furnished. The owners had left two bicycles for us, although these were somewhat rickety and inferior to two other bicycles used by the owners and kept under lock. The washing machine was a big help, and we had no difficulty drying our clothes on the drying rack, so the lack of a dryer was not an issue. The owners compiled a binder with information on local restaurants and attractions--we found this very helpful. There were also some fine Dvds (even some Jean Luc Godard!) and a Playstation console.
So why four stars and not five? We asked for (and received) four repairs during our stay:
(1) The tank to the master bedroom toilet leaked (bolts were corroded).
(2) The stationary door on the garage was off its hinges and posed a theft risk to the contents of the garage.
(3) The ground floor air-conditioning unit was out of refrigerant.
(4) When both the stovetop and oven were being used, the circuit breaker would trip.
The toilet leak was expeditiously repaired. The garage door issue had apparently been around for some time, because there were special instructions on how to open the garage door which would not otherwise have been needed; but this was repaired as well when we raised it. On the air-conditioning issue we received some pushback about the unit being relatively new, but a repairman was sent and the issue resolved. The most disturbing was the stovetop/oven issue. The owners had heard from prior renters that the circuit breaker would trip and need to be reset. However, the owners had not experienced this problem themselves (we assumed that they would generally eat out). Rather than investigate the complaints of the earlier renters, the owners had provided a warning that there had been reports of the breaker being tripped and needing to be reset. In fact, this is a symptom of an electrical problem and a potential fire hazard. If a breaker trips and needs to be reset regularly, an electrician should be called. When we insisted that an electrician be called, this was done, and the problem was resolved.
There are some minor problems that we didn't raise. The large bed in the master is a "double" or a "full" size (I'm not exactly sure which); but it is not a "king" or "queen." I only raise this because if you are used to a king (as we are), you will notice the difference. A number of the sliding doors have issues; some have no handles on one side (you need to "palm" your way out of the shower), some do not slide well (e.g. screen door to master balcony). The ceiling fan in the master bedroom is off-center and thus rotates eccentrically, making some noise. The toilet seat in the master bath doesn't stay in the "up" position (a minor victory for the better half!) None of the issues in this paragraph would have prevented us from giving "Villa Sundowner" a five-star rating; we include them for completeness.
There is one component that is without question "five star," and that is the rental agent, Shuna Meade. Shuna was outstanding to work with. She listened to our concerns, helped us understand the perspective of the owners, and personally oversaw the repairs. Although she hasn't been a rental agent for very long, that hardly matters: she is honest, thoughtful, and articulate, and inspires trust. When we return to Jolly Harbour, we'll be calling Shuna first. -

SurreyLovely Villa & Wonderful Extra
Left on 08/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012
I have stayed in Jolly Harbour a number of times, good location with beaches, restuarants and shopping in walking distance. This villa is by far our favourite - very comfortable and lovely extras; Wifi, Ipod docking station, well equipped kitchen and 3 bikes for use. The booking process was very simple, prompt and friendly responses and on arrival a simple and hassle free process to get the keys & introduction to villa. There is an offsite contact who was very helpful and available for the duration of the stay for any queries which is great support. All in all, a great experience and villa -- we will be back!

weybridgefantastic villa in great location
Left on 05/02/2012 for a stay in April 2011
Stayed in the villa for 10 nights in april 2 adults and 2 children (15,13). We had a great time. Freshly decorated, generous two bedrooms, 2 separate bathrooms, the sitting area with enough room for dining table and sitting area. Outside there was a patio area overlooking water, where it was relaxing to sit and eat. The villa was clean, there were plenty of utensils. The a/C was very good. It's about a 10 minute walk to the supermarket and swimming pool. The beach is short distance from here. The owners provide you with 2 bicycles, but if there are more of you, you should consider renting a golf cart which costs $20 a day. There is good security at the resort.
There is a good swimming pool which has restaurant. Food is of a good standard and reasonable price. There are also tennis courts and a squash court available at $4 an hour, although the hire of rackets is more expensive. There are a couple of rackets in the villa. The villa is next to the golf course, you can play at reasonable cost.
The beach at Jolly harbour is fantastic, there is a great restaurant called castaways.Loungers are free to customers of castaways. There are a few people on the beach selling their things but they are not a problem and certainly do not hassle you.
There are several restaurants all of which are of a similar price and standard. The prices are comparable to the UK, you would expect to pay approx £50.
We were able to go to other beaches and restaurants. I recommend Dennis restaurant and Oj's. Dennis has fabulous views, Oj's is right on the beach.
There is a supermarket at Jolly harbour, prices are comparable with the UK, but some items are more expensive so be careful.
Antigua itself is a very beautiful island. We had a great time and I would have no problem recommending for a relaxed family holiday. Hopefully we shall be returning very shortly.
