Escape from the city life and experience the solitude, stars and endless blue skies with our desert vacation rentals. Just 120 miles from L.A. and 30 miles from Palm Springs, Joshua Tree is a short drive to an oasis of discovery. Its nearly perfect year-around weather and smog free air attract people from all over looking for a place to get a way from it all.
We currently offers three Joshua Tree vacation rentals, two are situated on 5 private acres with ancient Joshua Trees and one on 1 ¼ of unspoiled Mojave desert. Both 3 bedroom homes have queen size beds, full sized kitchens, book/dvd/music libraries, outdoor seating areas with fireplaces and more.
Joshua Tree National Park welcomes over a million visitors every year. The park offers rock climbing, hiking, sight seeing, biking, camping, bird watching, star gazing, and exploring. This amazing park looks simple at first glance but its surreal geologic features will have a lasting impression. Want something different? Within a few minutes are hot springs, horse back riding, gambling, outlet stores, tram rides, atv riding, and more.
Rock Climbing is a sport that people from all age groups can enjoy (we climb with our nieces and nephews ages 5 to 18) and I have heard countless stories from people that have used climbing to overcome addictions, build self confidence, get in shape and to be in touch with nature.
Hiking in the desert can make you feel worlds away from the city life. With the wide open space and prehistoric looking geography you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder for this amazing place. There are so many places to explore from old mining camps, historic homes built into the rocks, hidden oasis where Indians once settled, view points where you can see in every direction due to the smog free air and so much more.
Anyone who has been to the desert knows what we are all saying when we brag about our desert night skies. According to the BBC, 99% of the continental United States (and two thirds of the world's population) never see a truly dark, starry sky. The Mojave Desert is one of the last places left in the United States where you can still see the Milky Way with the naked eye. At all of our rentals, there is plenty of outdoor seating and lounging to take in the night. It is one of the most special things we can offer our guests during their stay- a piece of peace that they can take with them anywhere.Read more

Home away from home and then some. The house is well equipped from the kitchen utensils to the toys, puzzles and foot massager. The hot tub, fire and cactus garden ( including Joshua Tree )adds a fabulous relaxing area to socialize.
On the edge of town it feels remote but is 5 mins from the center and 10 mins from the Joshua Tree National Park.
The attention to detail in and out of the house makes it so welcoming.
A delightful desert base for exploring the Park. Read more

We stayed at the Rio house with 9 people and a dog. We used the hot tub a lot, the DVD TV was great and the kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans and condiments. We loved the house
Thank you for your review! We appreciate that you noticed the cleanliness of the house- this is important to us as well which is why our cleaners are scheduled for 4 hours of cleaning at the end of each guest's stay. We hope to see you again!

We recently spent 3 days staying at Moonlight Mesa Retreat's "Sunset Terrace". This extremely comfortable home away from home was perfectly situated in Joshua Tree, close to park and town. Christa and Mark have thought of everything. We hiked everyday and were especially pleased to find multiple hiking books as well as books about the local flora, fauna and geography of the area. A great find that we will be sure to recommend to our friends. Read more
Beth~ Thank you so much for your kind review of our house. We enjoy at least 4-5 hikes a week so we like to be sure that books on local hikes as well as info/history on Joshua Tree and the surrounding area is available to all of our guests- and in all of our homes. I'm happy you made use of them!
Perfectly situated wonderful home in the desert!

My husband and I rented the Rio House for the month of February and loved every minute of it. It's so large and spacious, fully equipped with all the amenities, great kitchen, hot tub, fire pit, outdoor furniture. It's a perfect location for hiking in Joshua Tree National Park which we did every day! The managers were very attentive and responsive to any need we had. There was a very full and complete book about Joshua Tree and the surrounding area which was very helpful. We'd go back in a minute! It truly felt like home away from home. Read more
Thanks Rita! It's nice to get feedback from someone who stayed in one of our rentals for a long period of time. Glad you enjoyed your stay and that you were able to make use of all of its wonderful amenities! We hope to see you again~

Quail Crossing met and exceeded all expectations

Quail Crossing is the best of both worlds. A modern fully equipped
house with plenty of room but also surrounded by the quiet and beauty of nature and lots of open space. A gem in the desert. I highly recommend this house. It is a wonderful retreat which is secluded at the end of the road (literally) but also close to the national park and to town. Win win. I have stayed at many places in Joshua Tree area but this house I will return to.
You will not be disappointed. The property manager is friendly and efficient. A very positive experience.
Staying at Sunset Terrace helped make our visit to Joshua Tree e

We chose to stay at Sunset Terrace for 4 nights in late February while we visited Joshua Tree National Park for the first time with our 4 year old son, and celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary. Having separate bedrooms for an extended stay was nice - I think we all slept better than we did at the hotels we stayed at.
The full kitchen stocked with cooking necessities was wonderful, the living room was comfortable, the washer & dryer were great to have, the hot tub was amazing, and the setting was really nice - we felt pretty private.
I would not hesistate to book with Moonlight Mesa Rentals in the future if we decide to come back to Joshua Tree again!

We stayed at the very aptly named Quail Crossing (we saw tons of quail, other types of birds, jackrabbits, bunnies, and lizards crossing past our back sliding glass doors) for a weekend in June while attending a friend's wedding in town. We brought my mother and our 2.5 year old son and the place was just perfect for the four of us to spread out in the three bedrooms (and three bathrooms!). My son was overjoyed at discovering the swing set, climbing structure, and sand box, not to mention the toys hidden in the ottomans, but no worries if you don't have children-- all of the touches for children were tucked away and the house was beautifully appointed in a modern style. As promised, there were coffee beans and a grinder, of which we took full advantage. The full kitchen, dvd player, eclectic dvd collection, and washer/dryer made it a real home away from home. The hammock, chair swing, fire pit, chiminea, nice breezes, and beautiful views made it vacation worthy. We would love to return to Quail Crossing or check out one of the other Moonlight Mesa Retreats should we ever have the occasion to return to Joshua Tree! Read more
Wow Kelly, what wonderful things you had to say! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Most people that stay at Quail Crossing do not have children and don't even notice the toys that are tucked away in the ottomans (as you stated)...but they are there for the kids that do come through and are used and loved by them. Thanks again for staying with us, maybe next time you can try our rental that has the pool- so refreshing in the summer months!

We stayed at Quail Run in March and really enjoyed the house and setting: lots of windows, a shady porch for watching wildlife, easy access to Joshua Tree National Park. The house is very well furnished for families, with three bathrooms, a crib, a swing set, and last but not least, an ice cream maker!

This place is wonderful...so well appointed, coffee beans provided for you, plenty of space for our party of 6, hot tub under the stars, the coyotes howling at night as we sat around the firepit, gorgeous day hikes in the park. Christa took care of everything we needed. We'll definitely be back.

Everything was perfect. A well stocked cook's kitchen, a large tranquil backyard with hot tub, light and bright clean rooms, and great service from Christa.
Our party had such a wonderful time on our New Year's getaway. A warm and homey place in the heart of Joshua Tree. Lots of bunnies and birds in the backyard and great views of the mountains and Joshua trees. Lots of privacy but well located.
Thank you so much Moonlight Mesa Retreats! Look forward to dealing with you in the future.

We had a great vacation in the Sunset Terrace. We stayed there for 3 nights and could have easily stayed longer. The house is very homey, clean, and spacious. We had a great time spending lazy mornings at the back yard watching the rabbits, quails, and other wildlife. Honestly, we saw more wildlife in this back yard than in the park.
The fully equipped kitchen, grill, and hot tub made for great nights in. The location is great too. It's right off the main highway (but very quiet), and very close to the park entrance.
The owners were extremely nice and accommodating. Read more

Winter in the Desert/Wow!

We went to Joshua Tree to get some sunshine this winter and instead got poured on with rain every day that we were there. Being in the house for more hours than we would like, we did get to see first hand the care the owners took in making sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. We had everything we could possibly need, from the large collections of Dvd's , books, puzzles, and games to play. I love to cook, so I saw that the Kitchen was well stocked with things I would need. It had absolutely everything! The house was very cozy, nicely decorated, clean. When the electricity went out, caused by the storm, the managers were there likety split in about 10 minutes to get things back on track. The saltwater hot tub was our favorite! Loved the yard decor. I can't say enough good things about the house itself--great place!! We will definitely be back when we know the sun will be shining! Thanks Christa for a great stay!

Pre wedding gathering
Left on 12/11/2010 for a stay in October 2010 | Michelle Olson
Our stay with Moonlight Mesa Retreats was wonderful. We were organizing a pre-wedding gathering in Joshua Tree so we had an opportunity to drive by all of the homes so that we could choose which ones we wanted our friends and family to stay in during our actual wedding (we ended up booking all three homes!). Although it was hectic while we were there, all of the homes were so cozy and everyone felt comfortable and happy that they all had a place to go back to. We personally stayed in the Sunset Terrace with my parents. My mom was thrilled to make dinner and to find a food processor and everything else she needed in the huge kitchen. The yard and hot tub was our favorite- it was so relaxing! We loved seeing all of the critters that came through the yard. The managers of the house were great, no complaints at all for any of the homes- very happy with all of them! Thank you for a great stay!
I'm so glad you decided to stay with us and that the homes worked for everyone in your group- I'm glad we could accommodate all of you! Please come visit us again! -Christa

The perfect place to stay in Joshua Tree. Literally minutes to the visitor center. We spent a wonderful 2 days there, bouldering in the morning and sitting in the hot tub under the stars at night. This house has everything - comfy beds, plastic wine glasses and a spectacular view.
As cheesy as it sounds the worst thing about staying at Sunset Terrace was having to leave. Read more

We enjoyed our stay immensely! Our first time to Joshua Tree, but it won't be our last. So glad we found this rental and decided to stay. Normally we stay in hotels but for just a bit more, we had a whole house with a kitchen to cook in, a hot tub, cozy beds- everything was wonderful! The National Park is a treasure- exactly what we needed for some solitude. Coming back to the house after our hikes was something to look forward to. I was happy to find organic olive oil to cook with and fresh coffee beans for the morning. We had our coffee while sitting outside under the patio watching the animals and birds that came through the yard there- honestly, it was like having the park in our own back yard. The only complaint if there is one, is we wish we could have met the manager. We were not able to match our schedules so she gave us a self check-in for the house. No worries, we will be back and hope to meet her then!
