We recently spent 3 days staying at Moonlight Mesa Retreat's "Sunset Terrace". This extremely comfortable home away from home was perfectly situated in Joshua Tree, close to park and town. Christa and Mark have thought of everything. We hiked everyday and were especially pleased to find multiple hiking books as well as books about the local flora, fauna and geography of the area. A great find that we will be sure to recommend to our friends.

Beth~ Thank you so much for your kind review of our house. We enjoy at least 4-5 hikes a week so we like to be sure that books on local hikes as well as info/history on Joshua Tree and the surrounding area is available to all of our guests- and in all of our homes. I'm happy you made use of them!

Left on 03/01/2013 for a stay in February 2013
My husband and I rented the Rio House for the month of February and loved every minute of it. It's so large and spacious, fully equipped with all the amenities, great kitchen, hot tub, fire pit, outdoor furniture. It's a perfect location for hiking in Joshua Tree National Park which we did every day! The managers were very attentive and responsive to any need we had. There was a very full and complete book about Joshua Tree and the surrounding area which was very helpful. We'd go back in a minute! It truly felt like home away from home.

This place is terrific . . Never ate out , Why ? Squeezing oranges while watching sunrise through the huge east facing windows is a treat . Fully equipped kitchen , with a grand view,
is like an extension of the park .The provided whole bean coffee with a grinder is a nice touch .
What can I say about star gazing from the hot tub ?
Good hiking trail right from the rear of the house heading south below the boulders .
You can pay less , but the good stuff ends when you leave the park or stay here and have 24hrs of good stuff . Park trail guide and a decent book selection here for your use. Many movies for your use on a larger then most flat screen TV ( never used too many stars ) We really enjoyed our 4 days here . Well worth the cost .Response from Moonlight Mesa Retreats - 03/20/2013

Glad the vintage orange juice press got some use during your stay! Most guests that stay at the Desert Casa find it is hard to leave the house with part of the park right outside the back door- I'm happy you were able to explore this area as it is one of my favorites!

San Diego, CAQuail Crossing met and exceeded all expectations
Left on 03/14/2012 for a stay in March 2012
Quail Crossing is the best of both worlds. A modern fully equipped
house with plenty of room but also surrounded by the quiet and beauty of nature and lots of open space. A gem in the desert. I highly recommend this house. It is a wonderful retreat which is secluded at the end of the road (literally) but also close to the national park and to town. Win win. I have stayed at many places in Joshua Tree area but this house I will return to.
You will not be disappointed. The property manager is friendly and efficient. A very positive experience. -

Left on 03/11/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We chose to stay at Sunset Terrace for 4 nights in late February while we visited Joshua Tree National Park for the first time with our 4 year old son, and celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary. Having separate bedrooms for an extended stay was nice - I think we all slept better than we did at the hotels we stayed at.
The full kitchen stocked with cooking necessities was wonderful, the living room was comfortable, the washer & dryer were great to have, the hot tub was amazing, and the setting was really nice - we felt pretty private.
I would not hesistate to book with Moonlight Mesa Rentals in the future if we decide to come back to Joshua Tree again!

Los Angeles, Californiaperfect home in Joshua Tree
Left on 08/15/2011 for a stay in February 2011
I've been meaning to write a review of my stay back in Feb. 2011. I stayed at the Moonlight Mesa - Sunset Terrace.
The house is beautiful, there was more than plenty of space and bedrooms. This was a get away trip, and I wish I was able to stay longer (I ended up having to cut my trip short). The jacuzzi outside was so beautiful, being able to sit in the jacuzzi and look up at the stars was just a really special experience. And although the place was remote, (I'd wake up and find bunnies hopping in the backyard!) it was near by the main road and close to the Joshua Tree park entrance.
The greatest thing I loved about this place was being able to walk outside and feel like you were in the Joshua Tree park already. I can't wait to stay at one of their homes again -- I've come back to the location and stayed at hotels but it's not the same. -

New York, NYMoonlight Mesa | Quail Crossing
Left on 07/08/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We stayed at the very aptly named Quail Crossing (we saw tons of quail, other types of birds, jackrabbits, bunnies, and lizards crossing past our back sliding glass doors) for a weekend in June while attending a friend's wedding in town. We brought my mother and our 2.5 year old son and the place was just perfect for the four of us to spread out in the three bedrooms (and three bathrooms!). My son was overjoyed at discovering the swing set, climbing structure, and sand box, not to mention the toys hidden in the ottomans, but no worries if you don't have children-- all of the touches for children were tucked away and the house was beautifully appointed in a modern style. As promised, there were coffee beans and a grinder, of which we took full advantage. The full kitchen, dvd player, eclectic dvd collection, and washer/dryer made it a real home away from home. The hammock, chair swing, fire pit, chiminea, nice breezes, and beautiful views made it vacation worthy. We would love to return to Quail Crossing or check out one of the other Moonlight Mesa Retreats should we ever have the occasion to return to Joshua Tree!

Wow Kelly, what wonderful things you had to say! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Most people that stay at Quail Crossing do not have children and don't even notice the toys that are tucked away in the ottomans (as you stated)...but they are there for the kids that do come through and are used and loved by them. Thanks again for staying with us, maybe next time you can try our rental that has the pool- so refreshing in the summer months!

Left on 06/28/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We found this rental home during a internet survey at home (Europe); our major reason to select it was the private swimming pool.
After staying at the "Desert Casa" during three days in June 2011, we found out that there are much more reasons to stay at this place!
It has a great view on Joshua Tree during the day, a breath-taking view a t the stars during the night (sitting on the terras or in the hot tub with your cold drink), excellent kitchen facilities, good beds, tremendous living space in connection with the open kitchen.
The swimming pool & hot tub were even better then we expected from the pictures.
Thanks also to Christa (the house keeper) for answering all questions we had & the smooth arrival & departure!

Very open house with nice kitchen, well stocked for cooking. Loved the hot tub outside! Too chilly to enjoy the backyard, but it was nice and private. A good location close to the entrance to the park and close to town. It says 3 bedrooms, but one of the bedrooms is also the living room, with the TV! Also the soundproofing was minimal from the upstairs bedroom.

We often stay at rental houses when we go on vacation, so we have a lot of houses with which to compare. Rio House in Joshua Tree is right up there at the top of the list. It's private and quiet, roomy, tastefully and simply furnished, has super-comfortable beds, and the best stocked/equipped kitchen I have ever seen in a rental. Absolutely no complaints, other than we had to leave at the end of a wonderful week. I'd rent Rio House again in a flash!

Los Angeles, CASpacious and inviting home near park entrance
Left on 01/09/2011 for a stay in November 2010
My family spent Thanksgiving weekend at the Rio House, a comfortable, secluded home in Joshua Tree, which is located just a few miles from the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. We found the two-level home very clean, spacious, and nicely furnished inside and out, and the large, fully outfitted kitchen ensured that our Thanksgiving dinner preparations went smoothly, even with multiple cooks in the kitchen. For hikers, the location is ideal--we did daily hikes in the park and still made it home in time to enjoy a late lunch on the patio. My husband loved the hot tub and the TV, which is larger than the dinky ones we normally find in rental homes, and our young daughter enjoyed wandering around outdoors in the desert setting (as did our dog!). One note to parents of small children: most of the beds are fairly high off the ground, so you should plan on having your child sleep between you or bring a separate travel bed. Also, there are stairs leading to the upper level that we had to block off to keep our child from getting into trouble.

We had a great vacation in the Sunset Terrace. We stayed there for 3 nights and could have easily stayed longer. The house is very homey, clean, and spacious. We had a great time spending lazy mornings at the back yard watching the rabbits, quails, and other wildlife. Honestly, we saw more wildlife in this back yard than in the park.
The fully equipped kitchen, grill, and hot tub made for great nights in. The location is great too. It's right off the main highway (but very quiet), and very close to the park entrance.

We went to Joshua Tree to get some sunshine this winter and instead got poured on with rain every day that we were there. Being in the house for more hours than we would like, we did get to see first hand the care the owners took in making sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. We had everything we could possibly need, from the large collections of Dvd's , books, puzzles, and games to play. I love to cook, so I saw that the Kitchen was well stocked with things I would need. It had absolutely everything! The house was very cozy, nicely decorated, clean. When the electricity went out, caused by the storm, the managers were there likety split in about 10 minutes to get things back on track. The saltwater hot tub was our favorite! Loved the yard decor. I can't say enough good things about the house itself--great place!! We will definitely be back when we know the sun will be shining! Thanks Christa for a great stay!

Our stay with Moonlight Mesa Retreats was wonderful. We were organizing a pre-wedding gathering in Joshua Tree so we had an opportunity to drive by all of the homes so that we could choose which ones we wanted our friends and family to stay in during our actual wedding (we ended up booking all three homes!). Although it was hectic while we were there, all of the homes were so cozy and everyone felt comfortable and happy that they all had a place to go back to. We personally stayed in the Sunset Terrace with my parents. My mom was thrilled to make dinner and to find a food processor and everything else she needed in the huge kitchen. The yard and hot tub was our favorite- it was so relaxing! We loved seeing all of the critters that came through the yard. The managers of the house were great, no complaints at all for any of the homes- very happy with all of them! Thank you for a great stay!

We enjoyed our stay immensely! Our first time to Joshua Tree, but it won't be our last. So glad we found this rental and decided to stay. Normally we stay in hotels but for just a bit more, we had a whole house with a kitchen to cook in, a hot tub, cozy beds- everything was wonderful! The National Park is a treasure- exactly what we needed for some solitude. Coming back to the house after our hikes was something to look forward to. I was happy to find organic olive oil to cook with and fresh coffee beans for the morning. We had our coffee while sitting outside under the patio watching the animals and birds that came through the yard there- honestly, it was like having the park in our own back yard. The only complaint if there is one, is we wish we could have met the manager. We were not able to match our schedules so she gave us a self check-in for the house. No worries, we will be back and hope to meet her then!
