nanaimoSurf and Racquet Townhouse Number 178
Left on 02/20/2013 for a stay in February 2013
We stayed in 178 Jan/Feb 2013. We found the unit to be very old, tired, not updated and suffering from a general lack of maintenance. It should also be pointed out that this unit is so close to the sea that corrosion is a factor caused by the salt water. At times of very high surf all the doors and windows, which are equipped with hatches, are covered up to prevent the sea from damaging the unit.
We found Kaleo Lindsay our local contact to be very good in dealing with the numerous issues that we raised most of which he fixed during our stay and others he was continuing to work on.
The unit's wifi was not working but we were able to use the wifi from the next door unit.
The sound of the crashing waves was very pleasant to listen to at night.. -

Seattle, WAVery pleasant stay at townhome 178!
Left on 01/08/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We were charmed by the cozy atmosphere and beachy feel of this waterfront home. The rooms were spacious, well furnished, clean, and comfy. The directions and instructions for entry and exit were clear and easy to follow. The kitchen was well stocked with coffee maker, coffee grinder, blender, ice maker, pots, pans etc. The linen closet was well supplied with bath and beach towels, extra sheets, pillows and blankets. The storage unit had buggie boards, a cooler, snorkel gear, beach mats, chairs, umbrella, you name it!
The only things that were a bit of a problem were 1) the hot water heater kept shutting off (had to shower cold twice!) 2) we kept sinking through the couches because the strapping under the cushions is so worn out it gives way, and 3) the fans and lights needed some new batteries, or an overhaul, as some of them did not work at all. We were a little disappointed that there was no gas grill on the lanai as anticipated, but, short of a few updates, this is really a great place to stay, and an unbeatable price! -

Our stay in Townhome 178 was nothing short of perfect. The location was great with easy access to Kona and the the Townhome itself was comfortable and affordable. There was just the two of us and we really didn't need the extra bedroom but for the price you just couldn't go past it! The Townhome was equipped with everything we needed for our stay ie. snorkel gear, boogie boards, tennis racquets for the tennis courts, more than enough linen and the list goes on. It was also fantastic being right on the water and you can see the ocean from just about every room and who can beat going to sleep with the sound of crashing waves. We will definitely be back when we can next afford to visit. Thank you so much Chuck for providing us with a wonderful place to stay that only further enhanced our brilliant holiday!

Very close to the shore with Beautiful sunsets. Great supply of boogie boards and snorkeling equipment. Lovely pool. Beautiful grounds. No beach access but beautiful kahaluu beach is just a half mile walk away. Great snorkeling at this spot even for young children. Fully functional kitchen. Inspirational running along alii drive with numerous athlete types running and biking there. Didn't realize the big island is training grounds for the ironman triathlon. Easy drive with tons of tourist activities up alii drive. Safeway and Walmart within driving distance. Hilo and volcano national park a few hours away but drivable. We Overnighted in Hilo because it is such a drive and we wanted to do the hot ponds over there and the zoo along with volcano national park. We still didn't get to do everything we wanted to on that side of the island.

Oakland, CAExcellent Value
Left on 04/16/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Our family of four (2 adults, 2 kids) recently spent 5 days in townhome 178, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The waterside setting is beautiful, and provides cooling breezes and the delightful sound of crashing waves. The unit was quite clean, and the bedding was relatively new and of a nice quality. There is plenty of space to spread out and relax, and with cable TV in three rooms there were never any fights over what show to watch. There were snorkel gear, boogie boards, a cooler, beach mats, and beach towels, as well as tennis rackets and balls available for your use. Also free wi-fi that worked great. The tennis courts and swimming pool are right by the townhome, and were never crowded. A nice little beach is within walking distance, and the best snorkeling beach in the area is just 2 minutes drive down the road. A great shopping center with Longs Drug, a supermarket, and various eateries is just 2 minutes south. Families with kids will also want to check out the wonderful playground about 10 minutes south on highway 11.
The little deck that the patio table sits on could use a fresh piece of outdoor carpet, and a little repair along the edges. The screen door is a bit finicky, as were the dresser drawers in the kids room. These minor things can mostly be attributed to wear and tear that comes from being situated on the water in a humid climate. But all in all, we were quite pleased with the townhome, and thought the price was excellent. You can't go wrong if you are a couple or family looking for a comfortable, laid back, quiet place to stay in the Kailua-Kona area. -

Alameda, CAAn extraordinary 2 weeks in paradise!
Left on 10/05/2011 for a stay in September 2011
The rental was very clean and comfortable and the beds were firm. The two cleaning ladies who came mid-stay were polite and happy. The geckos who visited were very cute! There was no noise at night. The location was perfect for us as we were away from downtown Kailua-Kona and near a shopping center with a local flavor. The rental is located mid-way between the beautiful north Kona beaches and rough and tumble South Point and Green Sand Beach. We loved being able to walk to a Wednesday Farmer's Market and the County Beach where snorkling was excellent. Only one person in our group is a pool swimmer and she loved the pool and facilities. The rental is getting a little worn around the edges. The bath towles are ragged, the blender leaked black rubber goo, the pictures on the wall in the upstairs bath are sun-faded, the silverware doesn't match and there was not enough drinking glasses. All the ceiling fans are great and necessary, but they are a bit old and some only work on one speed. All those little details meant was the place was very good rather than excellent. A little TLC is all that's needed! There's a folder by the owner about local things to do and places to eat, but it's dated 2006 and many things have changed and phone numbers no longer work.

Everything we were expecting was found in townhome 178 of the Keauhou Kona Surf and Racquet Club. Great location near the pool and the tennis courts and what a view of the ocean. Great sunset every night. Not far from Captain Cook bay where we swam with dolphins.
Mahalo for the memories.

Left on 03/03/2011 for a stay in February 2011
Had a fantastic time on the island and townhouse 178 was great. The view each evening was more than you could ask for. Spinner dolphins, whales and beautiful sunsets. Interior of the townhouse could use a little TLC. A fresh coat of paint would do wonders. The beach equipment and books about the Island were very much appreciated and made our stay more enjoyable. Reading the guest books gave us some ideas that I am sure we would not have thought of. If you don't mind hiking a bit there are several very nice beaches that are not crowded, check out the book. The farmers markets are the way to go for fresh produce. It was very nice to have a washer and dryer. The grounds and other facilities at the complex are well maintained and the residents are very friendly. The tennis pro spent quite a bit of time with my boys who had never played tennis. Another local gentleman who fished along the shore each day helped one of the boys catch his first fish out of the ocean. One of the highlights of the trip was the whale watching adventure. If you want to go out with a smaller group (5 or 6 people) try "living ocean adventures". All in all a great place as a base to explore the island. We wouldn't hesitate to return to townhouse 178 in the future. Coming home to the snow and cold I wish we could have turned around and gone right back.

Had a wonderful time at the condo, especially impressed with the ocean being so very close by. I actually got to do some fishing and caught some Humu's & Hinalea's. I didn't keep them, but threw them back. I was very impressed with furnishings and sports equipment available for use. Next time I want to stay longer! One comment is the remote for the lightings were very confusing, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Otherwise, everything was great!

Nice pool. Gorgeous view!! We had a few ants, even though we put the food away. Kitchen could use a few more cooking utensils. We left a brand new beach chair for the next visitors. The pillows were not comfortable. They should be replaced. Nice big counter in upstairs bathroom....wish there was a second mirror on the wall. Close to the grocery store. Took a snorkel tour, glad we were so close to the dock.

Left on 01/17/2010 for a stay in December 2009
Aloha Condos was prompt and efficient in processing our reservation. The unit
was in good condition and the location was incomparable: you could get
splashed by the surf on the lava rocks just sitting on your lanai. It's a short
drive into Kona town and it was handy to have the shopping center, cinema,
and post office a short walk up the hill. Just a heads-up, the directions we
received from Aloha were backwards on the turn onto Alii; (should've said left,
not right). We ended up in the shopping center, but figured it out from there.
Also, we had no idea that lots of beach stuff was stored under the stairs (did
we miss a note somewhere?), so ended up buying some items we didn't need.
Right outside the door is a significant historical cultural site, a reminder of the
highly structured indigenous society which preceded corporate dominance of
the islands. -

The location was great-really enjoyed being right on the water- no road noise. The condo was well equipped , good ammenities ( like washer/dryer and 1 set snorkel gear, boogie board etc.) and it was close to shopping center for supplies. Check in was simple . Our only problem was an out of order phone... just check whether that has been dealt with . We did not ask for repair while we were there so cannot comment on response time.Be sure to check out the little beach just adjacent to north end of condos.

Washington, DCthe view the view the view & giant manta rays!
Left on 08/08/2009 for a stay in July 2009
The view was incredible - all OCEAN and black rock!!!
The place #178 was fine - decorations were very good and the back lanai was GREAT - we ate or sat there nearly every nite. Kitchen needs more supplies and place needs some upgrades and paint. FYI, for those that must have A/C there is no A/C on the 2nd floor where the bedrooms are located. That should be noted in the on-line description - my husband really likes A/C when sleeping but I was ok. The unit needs small maintenance and could use some freshening of paint and some new items where sea air and wear and tear has left it below average. As an owner of 2 vacation rental homes, I would add a large flat screen tv and upgrade the bedroom tv size. I left a message with the local manager with a list of suggestions. It was off season so there were not too many other renters but sounds carry there. The pool was good. The nearby scuba diving was GREAT and we saw giant manta rays both on the manta dive and on a shore dive - that alone was worth the trip! It was an easy location and we would consider coming back for the view and diving ! -

Liked the condo and amazing oceanfront view. Found the condo to be very clean and quiet and looked exactly like the photos posted on the website. Very quiet resort, not much going on and only amenities were a pool and tennis courts. Once we had booked our condo at the rate of $149/night, we learned the owner had reduced the price to $109/night for any future rentals. Found this very disappointing. Only minor complaints would be screen door to lanai needed repairing, and wished the resort offered more amenities.

We (2 couples) spent a great week in this very comfortable townhouse. The sunsets on the patio were glorius with the surf breaking on the volcanic rocks in front. The proximity to the ocean was a real plus but it did present a problem during a storm, as the lower windows and patio door on the ocean side were barricaded for protection for a day and a half. On the other hand we also watched grey whales from the patio.
Some nice shoreline walks from right off of the patio. There is good snorkleing in a well protected bay within easy walking disance, ideal for the beginner and lots of marine life. We did a few runs on the beach road in the morning and followed them with a quick ocean dip or in the complex's pool.
The location was very convenient to a local shopping mall including a good grocery store, and pharmacy along with a couple of decent restaurants. Lots more shopping and dining in nearby Kona.
Our only complaint is we spent too much time touring the island and not enough on the patio. -

Stamford, CtFine condo in Kona
Left on 04/23/2009 for a stay in July 2008
We stayed in this condo in Kona for one week Summer 2008. The Condo is right on the water (you can hear the waves from the bedroom), well kept in a beautiful location. It is quiet & well situated outside the main part of the town. A great snorkeling beach is walkable. The condo is clean and in good condition - not 5 star fancy, but very nice.
The only negative we had with our stay was the vog. I think I underestimated how troublesome it would be. We only had one completely sunny day on the Big Island out of seven.

This unit is the best place we have stayed! It is right on the water and we were able to view whales in the distance. The furnishing were beautiful and had everything necessary for going to the beach and cooking. I would definately put this unit first on my list for staying in the Kona area!

Left on 04/03/2009 for a stay in March 2009
The condo had a great location. I loved the sound of the ocean. I prefer condos that are better maintained, or newer. There were numerous places where rust was showing through and the ceiling fan in the upper bathroom was dirty as was the ceiling. Other condos where I have stayed had matching dishes and newer pans. There was no gate opener as stated in the e-mail (not a problelm really). The pictures were dated and could be improved with newer framing. The bathroom floor grout needs a good bleaching. The screen on the left window in the master bedroom was not secrue against the window and buggs got in.
As condos go, for the price it was nice. However, for the price I have also had nicer condos. Thank you. -

Within 10 minutes of arriving we were out on the lanai watching the whales. Very close to the ocean which we really enjoyed. We went and bought binoculars just to watch the whales. The weather all week was wonderful - very much like the Dominican. Well equipped kitchen with everything you need and then some. Excellent snorkelling very close by as well as shopping centre with grocery store. Pool was very nice and relaxing - quiet. Only issue we had is that the cleaning staff needs to do a much better job on the bathrooms. Dust on the ceilings fans and on the bathroom walls. Dark hairs in both showers and on the floor and walls. Just about called to have them come clean it immediately - we should have! We would definitely stay again but would make sure when we book that we mention this issue.

It was our 25th Anniverary. My wife loves the ocean and I wanted a place where we were right on the beach (so to speak) as there is no beach but there is nothing between us and the water. We spent a week in the condo and another week at various B&B around the island. At first I though it rather expensive compared to the B&Bs but they were not on the water and we had to eat lunch and dinner out each night. You can cook your own meals and pack lunches so the cost works out the same or maybe even cheaper in the end. The condo slept four but there were only the two of us. Our neighbors in the next condo stayed there and went to all parts of the island on day trips. Had I to do it over again I would stay at the condo the whole trip and do the same. We used the tennis courts but not the pool. We always swam in the ocean and there was a beach within walking distance. Sitting there, drinking wine, with the ocean crashing just feet away, watching the sun go down every day was awesome. Only once was it so hot that we had to turn the AC on but I was glad that I had it. I would return if it didn't take a whole day on a plane to get there.
