Left on 03/28/2013 for a stay in February 2013
Kona Makai has a very convenient location, not far from the village of Kona. The complex itself is very well maintained with a beautiful view of the ocean. the unit is very nice with updated decor. We believe it offers an excellent value---we have returned 5 times!

Lakewood, WAWe had an enjoyable stay.
Left on 03/07/2013 for a stay in January 2013
The condo was beautifully decorated & very comfortable. The only negative would be the lack of starter supplies. In the past, we've always had Saran, foil, mayo, mustard & a few spices. We had to purchase our own & leave them there. The complex was wonderfully located & well-cared for. We loved the view complete with whale sightings.

Left on 08/25/2011 for a stay in July 2011
We loved staying here. It was very quiet and perfectly located by the tourist district. The view of the ocean was as depicted. The condo is much nicer than the pictures on the web. The nice porch was nice to sit in every morning. Perfect veiw. we will stay again but do have some comments.
---
There were a couple of things that were bothersome but not anything that would keep us from going back.
The timer (6 hours) on the aC units wasn't long enough for sleeping through the night. We had to get up during night to turn it on. We are from Texas and need aC.
The timer in living room (1hour) wasn't long enough to enjoy a movie. Had to keep getting up and squeeze behind armoir to turn timer back to 60 minutes. We understand that people can be wasteful by leaving the ac to run when not needed but it was annoying.
---
The water heater only heated enough water for one quick shower maybe 10 minutes if that before going cold. Then we had to wait another 20 minutes for my husband to get heated water for his shower.
---
The dryer wasn't drying clothes fast enough. The dryer took 1 hour to dry 4 towels. We believe the towels were damp when put away when we got there. They had a sour smell to them and we rewashed them.
---
No safe. We were very uncomfortable not having a place to lock up our valuables.
---
Even though there were a few hiccups, the place is beautifully decorated and very welcoming.
We will stay there again.

Abbey Vacations recommended Kona Makai to us 4 years ago and we have been back every year since! It is a gem---not grand and luxurious but very comfortable with nice grounds, pool and view of the ocean. We love the proximity to town - a great walk for coffee at Java on the Rocks. Abbey Vacations and the owner of the unit have been very responsive to any need we might have --- we've already made our reservatons for next year!

Calgary, Alberta, CanadaA nice, clean condo with a great location in Kona.
Left on 12/30/2010 for a stay in December 2010
We really enjoyed our stay at the condo. The bed was very comfortable and the unit was very clean. We were right on the waterfront and the views of the sunset were spectacular. Also, the place came with all the necessities to make our stay enjoyable--there were even extra beach towels, a cooler, flashlights and a boogie board.
We were located minutes from many great beaches and snorkels, as well as the beachfront strip of restaurants, bars and shopping in Kona. And the condo was nice and quiet at night. The view from out patio was amazing. And free parking was included in our package. Also, they had a gate access only at night which made us feel our car, and our condo, were very safe.
The help we received from abbey Vacation Rentals was great as well. We needed to extend our check out by a few hours and they went all out to make that happen for us.
The only negative thing I'd say is that the pool and hot tub in the condo complex close down at 9 pm each night, so you really have to scramble to get home and enjoy it. However, watching the sun set while in the hot tub was something we really enjoyed. Also, the aC units in the condo are a little noisy, but worked well (especially in the bedroom). The bathroom tub is a little small and the placement of the shower head seems really low even for a short person like me (5'4''), but it worked well and made our stay very pleasant. And there was always hot water which was a huge bonus (we took showers every day). We did have a minor problem with the phone, but abbey Vacation Rentals resolved that immediately.
I think this was really good value for our money. It was clean, neat with a beautiful view, and was a great location in Kona. -

OhioFANTASTIC VALUE
Left on 12/22/2009 for a stay in December 2009
My wife and I stayed for 8 nights in December of 2009. We both enjoyed it greatly and highly recomend this unit. It is a tremendous value, being clean, safe, and well equipped with everything you might need to enjoy some time in Hawaii. I'm normally very reluctant to rate anything at a maximum satisfaction value, but this unit merits the rating. You could easily spend twice as much for a place without the charm, ammenities and views.

Portland, ORGreat vacation rental!
Left on 04/05/2009 for a stay in March 2009
We stayed at Kona Makai for 9 nights and had a wonderful experience. It is located in an ideal location. Close enough to walk to the village, yet far enough away to have a quiet, tropical experience. We found the home to be exactly as described online. The availability of a BBQ, pool, and exercise room were all very much appreciated. The only thing we would change is the fact that the kitchen had absolutely no food except salt/pepper. In other condos that we've stayed in there would be small amounts of cooking oil, condiments, spices, etc. that we could use, then leave ours to share. We have no hesitation recommending this property for rent.

Left on 03/16/2009 for a stay in March 2009
My husband and I stayed in Kona recently and would highly recommend this property. It was extremely clean, well situated, nicely furnished and had a beautiful sunset view from the lanai. It was close enough to Kona Village for an exercise-type walk but far enough away from all of the hustle and bustle.

Left on 01/22/2009 for a stay in January 2009
When we arrived the condo was clean and cute. Very nice furnishings. Boogie board, towels, cooler and beach chairs available. We ran short of paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap and salt and pepper. Otherwise very well stocked. I have stayed at the condos on either side of the Kona Makai, and by far this is the friendliest. You can have privacy or join the group at sunset by the pool. The bar-b-que is a great meeting place. It is central to lots of activities and beaches. We will definately be back to this complex. Will probably need a bit bigger place, but 4-104 is perfect for a couple wanting some intimate evenings. View of the waves and sunset is spectacular. Thanks. Mahalo and aloha

Left on 01/04/2009 for a stay in March 2008
The condo has a wonderful view of beautiful central landscaping and the ocean. Every evening we sat on the rocky shoreline and watched the sunset. Although we didn't use the open barbecue area we saw other groups of people having great fun there. The unit was quiet, clean and fairly well-maintained. Every day we walked downtown which takes about 20 minutes and along the way there are several stops where you can take time to enjoy the ocean scenery. I would stay there again and would recommend it to friends and family.

We have a time share on the Big Island in Waikoloa, but when we visited last February we decided to stay an extra week and we wanted to stay in Kona, so we made a reservation at the above property. WE LOVED IT! The condo was perfectly located and this particular condo faced directly toward the ocean. Sitting on the lani having a cool drink and watching the beautiful sunset. It doesn't get any better. The condo size was perfect for me and my husband and very tastefully appointed. We would not hesitate to rent the same condo in the future.

Left on 12/16/2008 for a stay in May 2007
My husband and I rented this home a year and a half ago and were shocked to get this review questionaire so late...
For the price we paid, we got what we paid for. You can't expect 5 star ammenities when your paying for a 1 star condo. So for a cheap vacation, it worked. I thought that the cleanliness lacked, but that was the housekeepers job. The condo could use a new mattress and tv.Response from Abbey Vacation Rentals - 01/04/2009

We initiated our FlipKey independent surveys in December 2008, and in doing so FlipKey surveyed our guests over the past 18 months. So it wasn't a matter of surveying late, as much as a new survey system starting up. This Kona Makai unit is a very popular unit. A totally renovated 1 Bedroom Ocean view unit close to Kona town. Regardless of the rate charged, we expect all of our units to be premium for its class. This Kona Makai unit is of this standard. It is one of the nicest at Kona Maka. Additionally to the point on the rate which is in the very low $100s/Night, it is a real value.
We take the cleanliness of our units very seriously. In the event of any issues of this nature, if a guest makes us aware of a concern, we will have it corrected directly.
We have had no other negative comments concerning the mattress in this unit, and upon our checking the mattress, we found the present mattress of January 2009, to be in good shape

North Vancouver, B.C.Great condo!
Left on 12/15/2008 for a stay in October 2008
This condo is spacious, well-maintained and spotlessly clean. The
very large lanai with a view of the ocean was perfect for all meals, and
the staff were very quick to respond to minor glitches (e.g. a busted
coffee maker!) Value for money spent, it's one of the best places we've
stayed in the Islands, and we'd do it again cheerfully. -

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful Condo. Gorgeous new decor and very nice exterior. Perfect location - near the town of Kona, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. Wonderful view from the lanai. Unit was stocked with everything we could possibly need. Would love to come back.
