We had an absolutely FANTASTIC stay at Hale Kona. We have had family living in Kona for nearly 15 years, so we're very familiar with the island and have stayed in many different types of accommodations. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. We gave my parents the master bedroom on one side of the house and they loved how much room they had to really "move in" for 10 days (luxurious master bath and amazing walk-in closet space). Our family of four occupied the other side of the house. Our young teen children (boy and girl) each had they own bedroom and bathroom and my husband and I stayed in what can really be called a 2nd master bedroom (smaller than the room/bath my parents had, but still lovely). We were probably in the pool at least 1/2 the time we were in the house. We cooked more than half our meals at home and the kitchen had everything we needed. The location is great and it's a quiet community with a perfect neighborhood for morning and evening walks. We certainly hope to be fortunate enough to stay at Hale Kona again!

Beautiful home with great amenities driving distance to town

At first glance this home is absolutely perfect. Beautifully decorated with everything you could need in terms of a vacation rental. Plenty of bathrooms (even a fantastic one off the pool), ample kitchen supplies, comfortable furniture and a pool with a fantastic view. Kathy was a fabulous and thoughtful host arranging a high chair and pack-n-play for our little ones and even provided some Kona coffee, banana pancakes and coconut syrup (which was delicious!) upon arrival.
My only complaints were that there was construction going on next door so we heard sawing all day most days (even on the weekend), the screen doors opening from the living room did not close completely so we did get mosquitos in the house, and the refrigerator didn't seem to work properly so some of our food went bad. The worst was the noise from construction. Had I known this was going to happen, I would definitely have chosen another place as it detracted from the relaxing atmosphere.
It would have been nice to be within walking distance from beaches and/or stores but the neighborhood was beautiful for nice strolls. We were vacationing with several small children (ages under 1 to 11yo) so having to get in the car any time we wanted to go anywhere was a bit of a pain. The kids enjoyed having their own pool though - they were in it more often than out!
Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this house to a friend.

Fantastic home in great location

This home is wonderful for us 4 adults - it was much more house than we needed, but we were so glad we picked it! It is laid out nicely with the great room extending out onto the lanai through sliding pocket doors which open the entire back of the home to the outdoor living space. We spent most of our time at the home enjoying the view, meals and pool from the lanai. We never did use the dining room, as there was ample seating out of doors. The ocean breeze kept us cool, but the amazing sunrises and sunsets kept us in awe. We were very surprised to find a full outdoor bath, which came in handy for a quick rinse off after a refreshing swim in the pool. The home was beautifully furnished and we found the kitchen well stocked. This was important, as we love to cook. The bedrooms were large and each one had its own attached bath. The beds were comfortable and sleeping without air conditioning was not an issue, as each room had a ceiling fan and pedestal fan to keep us cool. The community surrounding the home was very well manicured, maintained and monitored. It is located in an ideal area - close to many activities, groceries and shopping - very easy to get around.
Our experience was all good. 10 days was great, but it was still not easy to leave.

When we arrived, we were amazed how clean the house was, floors, rooms, bathrooms, fridge, kitchen, appliances and amenities were spotless. We are "shoes off at the door" people and this is the very first home rental we have stayed in where our feet remained clean throughout the whole house, not the usual black we've seen in the past. The cleaning staff Kathy has do a great job. The beds we used in the 2 master suites were very comfortable. The pool was fantastic! it was unfortunate the pool skimmer was ripped and non functional to take the leaves and such out of the pool in between the weekly Tuesday pool maintenance, but the pool guy also did a great job keeping the pool in shape. The water was the perfect temperature when the sun was out, more than invigorating in the evenings. We didn't use any of the pool/beach toys and amenities provided, but here looked to be a very ample supply to look after any visitors, more than any other rental we have ever stayed at, and we have stayed in many over the years. Great place to stay and very impressed overall. The 2 Kathy's were great to deal with on all aspects of our dealings with them before, during and even after our stay. Keep up the great level of service and quality of this vacation rental! Our next trip back to Big Island will definitely be lined up to stay here.
Beautiful Rental Home

This home was perfect for our family of 7. Plenty of room and very spacious. The pictures before hand were beautiful but when we actually saw it we couldn't believe how beautiful it was. It is equipped with everything you need in a home, we couldn't have asked for more. It is beautifully maintained, decorated lovely. Our family just loved it. We could see the water from the lanai so the sunsets were beautiful. There were plenty of tables outside for us to eat at and sit around and visit. The neighborhood was great for taking morning walks and every one was very friendly. The location is close to shopping centers and really not far to any thing.Even though there is no air conditioning we never were too warm with the ceiling fans and the large patio doors. Everything is well marked on what do to do in the house and their is a binder with very detailed instructions and this helped as well. What we liked best was the privacy we had and the spaciousness. We met the property manager for the house and she was very nice and helpful. We hope we can go back and stay at this house again.
Beautiful home with lots of insect wildlife inside and out
Left on 03/12/2014 for a stay in February 2014 | Linda P
This was a beautiful home in a lovely gated community. However, insect control had been neglected and we were battling ants in the kitchen and bathrooms even before we unpacked. They had bug spray under all the sinks and in the garage, and my husband spent the first three mornings and evenings spraying the entire perimeter (outside) and inside. Washing dead ants off the patio and reapplying after it had dried out. There was a mosquito overabundance and the citronella candle buckets outside had been all burned up. Would have been nice to have had a few new ones! (We never went to a store that carried them--who goes to home depot in Hawaii on vacation?!) Spiders inside. Google huntsman spider. The pool is very cold. The house is very hot. I was concerned about no a/C before the trip and was told it was not necessary and the breezes keep the house cool. The master bedroom does not cool down. The bedroom wing will. The stairs don't look bad in the pictures, but there is no way to avoid them. Multiple levels inside and outside the home...it is a guarantee that someone will fall eventually. Was hoping the bug problem was going to be taken care of while we were there, but it wasn't. Very disappointing. Part of the bug problem is probably due to the screens on the doors not fitting very tight (some had gaps). Something that could be fixed easily. So, one may say, Hey, you are in Hawaii, there's gonna be bugs. Well, our friends rented a home in the jungle area about 1000 feet higher and never saw one at their place, and got eaten alive with mosquitos when they visited us. I lived in Hawaii for a year of college and didn't experience the bug problem in the dorms. I returned with a souvenir-- when I took my clothes out of the dryer after washing them, a dead cockroach. Lovely. We only saw these outside the house, but there must have been at least one inside as well. Won't rent a home in Hawaii again. This is my first negative review, ever. Hate to do it. Read more
We are very disappointed to see this review. This kind of review for our rental properties is one of a kind.
As owner of the home, we take pride in our home and do want our guests to enjoy their stay. We do invite our guests to call us or our local contact with concerns, prior to and/or during their stay. As owner, I was in contact with this guest twice during her stay, the first was in response to her complaints of house being warm upon arrival and, the second later in the week with the first mention of ants. Until this review from this guest, neither our local contact nor I had heard of some of the issues related by this guest in this review. I would like to respond in as factual manner as possible to this review.
No guest prior to this guest or since this guest, has commented, seen or "experienced the wildlife" this guest describes. In fact, our other reviews, emails and comments express quite the opposite of this review.
Insect control has been maintained on a regular basis at the house. Prior to this complaint, no guest has mentioned an issue about ants, mosquitoes, spiders, or cockroaches as mentioned in this review. The spider referred to is most likely a Cane Spider which can be a scary looking spider due to its size, but it is actually quite a helpful arachnid, eating just about any other insect. They are quite timid, but can startle one due to their size and speed of retreat.
We do ask guests to take garbage out of the house to the trash can in the garage regularly, and to the street on pickup days. We ask guests to be sure to wipe counters to discourage any insect activity. Upon the departure of this guest, at the end of their 7 day stay, they left approximately 10 bags of garbage in the driveway, rather than taking the trash can to the curb for pickup that morning. Our cleaner and local contact had to personally remove the garbage from the property. During their stay, there would have been 2 scheduled garbage pickup days ...one midway through their stay and one the morning of their departure.
Pest control was scheduled as soon as possible subsequent to guest complaint. The pest control service found no evidence of ants inside the home, as he looked extensively throughout the home, including inside each cabinet in the house...bathrooms, kitchen, etc.
Without speculating, it is not possible to explain why these guests say they experienced such an ant problem. It is possible due to the exceptionally heavy rains that week, ants may have been driven out of their underground homes. However, no other guest has communicated this kind of problem to us before.
With respect to the steps in the house, our website clearly indicates multiple steps in the home and we do advise all guests to familiarize themselves with the layout of the home and lanai areas due to the multiple levels throughout the home and pool area. Although there are no full flights or half flights of steps...everyone, of all ages and abilities needs to be aware of the steps.
Our website and policies do indicate the pool and spa are not heated. What can be refreshing to some, can be too cold to others. If a heated pool is critical to a guests' stay, a resort is probably more suited to ones needs.
We do ask our guests to contact us, or our local contact, with concerns and we will make every effort to respond accordingly.
Kathy, owner Hale Kona

Our group of three families (total of 6 adults, a 5 year old, two 3 year olds, and a 2 year old) stayed here for 10 nights with room to spare. There's a master suite with a king bed, a king bedroom, a queen bedroom, a media room with a queen sofa sleeper, plus an office with four keiki mats--lots of room for sleeping. The master suite has sliding doors to the pool area; all other rooms are located along a long hallway on the other side of the house; the hallway has doors to the pool area. The washer and dryer closet are also located in this hallway. Huge plus--every sleeping room has its own bathroom! There is wood flooring throughout, which is beautiful, but made for some echoing. We stayed in the master suite which meant we could hear people sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast in the morning--and not their voices as they were quiet, we heard the spoons clinking on the glass bowls! Not a huge deal, but if you're a very light sleeper, be aware. The outdoor area was very nice, but also had the biggest disappointment of the house--the pool and spa are not heated. It says this at least three times during the reservation process and confirmation you are sent so we knew ahead of time, but make no mistake--an unheated pool in January, even in Hawaii, is downright cold. It would have been beyond amazing to sit in the hot tub to watch the sun set over the ocean. There is also not much yard, due to the pool and deck, so just be prepared. But the ocean view is spectacular--and great sunsets! Our other biggest complaint about the house was the lack of appropriate meal seating for the group. We were allowed two beyond the max since we had 3 small kids. But there are only two tables outside (which is where you want to eat your meals), each of which seat only 4, and at different heights so you can't join them. Kind of a bummer. The house is well stocked--everything we needed in the kitchen, plus coolers, boogie boards, beach towels, sand toys, chairs, etc for the beach.
An Unbelievably Gorgeous Property

Wow! I can't say enough wonderful things about this spacious, amazing home. The owners spared no expense on upgrades and the property is truly luxurious. The kitchen is generously equipped, the rooms are all spacious and elegant, and every bedroom has its own bath. The master suite is the size of a small house. The property is in a gated community of well-kept, upscale homes, so the neighborhood is very safe and quiet.
A great deal of attention went into the landscaping and the placement of the home on the lot. When on the lanai, you cannot see any neighboring properties - only palm trees and the ocean. The view is stunning, and you almost feel as though you're on your own private island. We found it immensely preferable to the beach, and most of the time we were perfectly happy to lounge around the pool and read.
We met our adult children in Kona for a week of sun and relaxation. There were six of us in the house, and it was so spacious that no one felt as though he or she was tripping over anyone else.
The house was immaculate. A small welcome basket with Kona coffee and Hawaiian breakfast items awaited us. Basic supplies such as picnic totes, beach towels, grass mats, and an excellent visitor's guidebook are available. If you want to barbeque steaks or chicken, the house also has a small patio off the kitchen with a gas grill. A grocery store and shopping center are just minutes away, but Costco (approximately halfway between the airport and Hale Kona) is by far the best place by far to stock up on food and wine.
We have rented some wonderful homes and condos over the years, but Hale Kona took the experience to a whole new level. It's an exquisite property, and we can't wait to return.
Wonderful ambiance and view.

The home was clean, nicely kept up and in a beautiful gated community with actual security. Very quiet neighborhood. Very pleasant for walks.
There was more than ample room for our family of 8. We were contacted by the local manager on the day of arrival to see if we needed anything. Very informative gal that did historic tours of the island.
The location was very close to the beach and shopping.
We liked being able to open the house up as there were large screen doors the width of the living room. The only negative we had was the temperature of the pool. It was a little too cool for our taste.
I would recommend this home in a heartbeat.

My family and I had a wonderful vacation. The house is absolutely astonishing! The master bathroom in itself, jaw dropping. The owner was very accommodating, and we didn't have to worry about a thing. Although we have stayed on the Big Island several times, we got to try new places to eat that we never would have known about due to the location of home, which is ideal. Every amenity that you could need was available, and we very much appreciated the beach toys and cooler to use, as well as beach towels. Can't say enough good things!
The least thing I liked is there was no pool vacuum that would have helped out with the birds and what they carried in, but other than that it was amazing, and I will definitely be renting this property again.

Our stay in this home was beyond belief! It is beautifully maintained, with everything working well. Easy to communicate with the owner for any questions. The home is just as advertised, and quite luxurious. Although we only used 3 bedrooms (all quite nice), the "sofa couch" is also a separate room, with it's own bathroom, too! We were in town for Ironman, and it was easy to get into Kailua-Kona for the race and the other events. Loved the quietness of the area, and the security of the gate (with guard). We would definitely rent this home again. It was our fifth year to attend Ironman, and this was our best rental yet, although not the most expensive.

Kathy George's beautiful home is spacious and the decor outstanding! My favorite thing to do if we got back in time from our day of play was sipping a beverage watching the glowing and radiant sunsets captured between the palm trees from the pool area! The video of the rental is exactly what the home looks like. Kathy bought us extra boogie boards to use at Hapuna Beach! Please read her House Description Book which gives details of things to do and places to eat. She has also included other interesting things about island living which is very helpful.
We had 4 teenagers and two adults and everyone could unwind in their own rooms, then we would meet in the living room to play Crazy 8 and other card games.
Bbq on the new grill was a plus too. There is a Costco on Kona side between the airport and Kilauea.
We had an exciting time and felt safe with Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Company and did the waterfalls and active lava flow tour! We drove to Hilo side because it was less expensive and we wanted to tour the other side of the island too. It will be a whole day adventure. The atlantis Submarine Tour & Island Breeze Luau Combo in Kona was a great show for our family! Reading the reviews online was very helpful too. Make sure you check in at their office before you go to the docking area.
One of the least things I liked was that being gone all day with the house windows and doors locked could become very warm.
Thank you Kathy for adding to our great family memories we will be back!

We have rented many houses over the years and this home far surpassed them all. This home is in a gated community with very strict security which made us feel very safe. When we arrived there was a welcome basket with Kona Coffee, Pancake mix and bottled water - what a nice touch. The home was immaculate and had everything we needed. There were 8 of us (all adults) and there was plenty of room for all. Each couple had a bedroom with full bath which was important to us. No matter what we did during the day we all made sure we were settled by the pool with cocktails by 6:30pm every evening to watch the unbelievable sunsets - wow, wow & wow. There is plenty to see and do in the area (most things were free) Kona Brewery Tour (20 minutes by car) you do need a reservation for this (10:30am & 3pm), Greenwell Farms Coffee Plantation (20 minutes by car) tours are every 20 minutes no reservation needed. There is great snorkeling down the hill (5 minutes by car). We also snorkeled at two step (30 minutes by car) and we found a great white sandy beach and lagoon near the airport (30 minutes by car). The only excursion that cost us any money was snorkeling with the Manta Rays - what a wonderful experience. We did this just down the hill from the house (5 minutes by car) you will find the dive shop in the shopping center. There are also dive shops that do this closer to the airport - they all seem to be about the same in experience and cost. I would not recommend this home for the elderly, disabled or vision impaired as there are lots of little step downs throughout the house. My personal highlights were: the house, lanai & pool area, sunsets, swimming with a large sea turtle and snorkeling with the manta rays. We are already talking about a return visit in the near future. The owner Kathy was very easy to work with. The local contact did call to make sure everything was OK and the pool and grounds people were very pleasant.
