Left on 04/04/2012 for a stay in February 2012
This site has it's charm, but I recommend it with some reservation. Nice: the Hibiscus room. My room (Lehua) was cold and not as fresh as it could be. I think because both owners are working other jobs, they are sometimes not on top of the game (more on that below). Location wise, I enjoy it for exploring the Waipi'o Valley or the beaches on the Kohala side (but still prefer Puako). Waimea has some great restaurants and is a prosperous place; more suited as a great place to live.
The downside for me was the customer service at Waiaka, and for that reason I will not return to this Homestead. I travel often and all over the world, but this was one of the most frustrating. And when you're a solo traveler, which I often am, the kindness of the people you meet is a big part of the experience.
This event happened when I was vulnerable and really needing things to be running smoothly. I was there working as part of the Habitat for Humanity team. Solo, sick with a bad cold, flying in late at night, and needing the accommodations I had prearranged (and paid for!) in an area where accommodation options aren't that abundant... and the owners wanted to back out (they put someone else into the room I'd paid for). It added tremendous stress to my trip and I actually had to miss time working with the team because of the lack of organization and the time I spent trying to make things work. Both owners said they forgot I'd paid (Ahh... a more efficient booking system needed, maybe?!). OK, mistakes happen, but the owner made it clear how much of a hassle it was to juggle things to accommodate me, even though I offered to take another room. So busy with the project already, I found it frustrating to chase them down to pay for more days, and then again for a receipt, asking 3 consecutive days in emails I know were received. Finally, when checking out, I was asked to come back another day for it. Then the owner made me out to be hard-to-please because I insisted on a receipt before leaving. It should have been easy and supporting my charity work, but was a hassle - and a real disappointment because I was so charmed by the place and the owners when I first took my tour and prepaid. -

I was at first charmed, getting a tour of Waiaka before heading to Kauai for a few days. I prepaid for 3 days - cash - but was offered no receipt. Unfortunately I came down with a head cold that prevented me from flying back for the first 2 days (my loss, I paid for 2 hotels those nights). Each day I emailed Waiaka to let them know; got confirmation they had received my email. Writing to confirm my arrival on day 3, I was told someone was staying in my suite & that I should check in elsewhere; no mention of who would pay for it. I suggested they could at least offer me another room. The owner made a fuss about the trouble she went to to rearrange the guests so I could stay there. Certainly was not a welcoming feeling. (Note: one owner gave the tour, but told me the other owner would collect the money. Both owners then later said they forgot I had paid. Why then, was I keeping in touch from Kauai?) Yet I extended my stay 2 days because I was doing a charity building project nearby. Our schedule was full: I left early and returned late each day, so there was no time to talk to the seldom-seen owners directly. The final straw: I had to chase them to pay & asked 3 times- in emails I know were received - for a receipt. When checking out, I was asked to come back another day for it. Later, in a rebuttal to my initial review, she made me out to be hard-to-please because I insisted on a receipt before leaving. My disappointment lies in 3 things: how disorganized their booking system is, how they handled it when clearly they had made an error, & how they twisted the facts when I sent in my initial review to travel sites (now resubmitting). For clarity: I am not writing anything I cannot back up with written correspondence -&- the owner argued I was hard to contact because I had no phone; with little else to do when ill, I was hovering over my computer. In general: these not are bad people, but they would do better to take accountability & hone their customer service skills.

We deeply apologize that you were so frustrated with us during your visit here. It's not like us, and in reading our other reviews, particulary on VRBO where the majority of our guests come from, you will see that most people experience us as available, loving, efficient, clean, charming, and attentive.
While it is true that you cancelled five of the eight days you had reserved, with little notice, we still did bend to accommodate your last-minute-arrival-after-all change of plans. Our cancellation policies are clearly stated, and we regret for your sake and ours that your frustration seems to have led to hard feelings.
We also apologize that we weren't able to accommodate your request for a further extended stay, and it must have been very inconvenient for you to have to leave when you weren't feeling well. Last-minute plans are difficult when one isn't able to plan ahead, and we regret that our booking schedule did not accommodate yours.
We appreciate your willingness to share your frustration with us, and our opportunity to do our best to respond. Since so many of our responses are positive and glowing, it helps to have a less than stellar report once in a while so folks can see that we don't cull out the complaints. -

I was fortunate to spend a week over Christmas with family at the Waiaka Homestead. Such a warm and welcoming environment can't be matched. A traditional homestead feel was very refreshing after 20 years in the hotel industry. The flexability of the various units make it a great destination for groups of any size. Beautifully appointed in authentic Hawaian decor, it is emits a comfortable and homey feel that adds to the overall charm.
I will be back for future visits!Response from Barrie Rose - 04/05/2012

I have been a guest of Barrie Rose on numerous occasions, both at Wai'aka Homestead (in different rooms) & the Brazilian Pepper suite. No matter the space, it is a reliable, comfortable nights sleep with the delight of waking to birdsong, beauty & quiet. It allows me to believe I'm on vacation here in Hawai'i.
In Wai'aka, Barrie's sense of style & Johanna's fastidious ability of restoration, honor the nature of an old gallant house of Kamuela's early historic era. Whether renting a cozy room or sharing the open living style of the main house, it just feels good. The Brazilian Pepper is a perfect couple’s retreat, a very cozy space, a little closer to town for those who like to walk about.
If attending a conference or finding myself staying late at a concert, not wanting to make the long drive home to South Kona, I have been able to count on Barrie to accommodate my needs. She is welcoming & gracious.Response from Barrie Rose - 04/05/2012
