Secluded yet centrally located peaceful cottage on Kauai

Left on 03/16/2013 for a stay in February 2013

The Kauai Tea Garden cottage provided the perfect hub for me for activities all over the island. You are about equal distance from the end of the road on the North shore as well as West shore, i.e. you are right in the middle with fast and easy access to all Kauai has to offer. Lihue airport is just 30 minutes away for those that plan to do day trips to some of the other islands.

I am not much of a bathing person (and hence only used the whirl pool once), but I was looking forward to my outside shower every day. I also made regular use of the washing machine/laundry to get the dirt out of my hiking clothes. The BBQ was fired up occasionally as well. The one thing I failed to make use of at this trip were the kayaks ... I guess I will have to do that next time.

Charlotte was a great host despite the fact that she had broken her foot recently. I found the place to provide for everything I needed, but was always aware that Charlotte would provide for whatever I would find to be missing.

The cottage was a great place for a solo traveller like myself, but I'm sure will also make a great and romantic getaway for couples. I couldn't have asked for more.

When we thought it couldn't get any better...

Left on 08/09/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Five years ago my wife and I rented a cottage on the windward side of Maui.
It was just absolutely beautiful and the memories we created there were by far….indescribable.
We swore that there would never be another vacation that could surpass it.
      We were wrong!
That stay on Maui made us firm believers in vacation rentals (though some local governments call them Transient Vacation Rentals …or TVR’s). I mention this because the “TVR†business is in jeopardy. (Go while you still can…is my point!)
My wife and I were discussing travel plans back to the Islands (Hawaiian) for our 20th anniversary.
We stumbled around the internet for a suitable “TVR†on the island of Kauai. We found
      Kauai Tea Garden Cottage.
When we arrived on the island, the “get to†directions from the airport in Lihue were spot on!
The front door was unlocked and a key was on the table. We spent at least an hour familiarizing ourselves with the home, its features and the Jacuzzi tub looking out into the forest (jungle).
Everything was as advertised! But the photographs on the website don’t do it justice (so I’ll post a few of my own).
I could say so many things about our time here, so I’ll summarize:
Privacy: -a bit close to the road but no one is ever around.
      Outdoor Shower- Everyday! Loved it!!!
Jacuzzi tub- Everyday sometimes twice per day!!!
Kitchen- everything you need… (Except plastic Wal-Mart bags….that’s Kapu in Hawaii)
Bbq- we grilled ahi 3 different nights
      The grounds- immaculate and gorgeous!
The roosters- well…..they grow on you!
The weather- let’s just say showers (frequently)…. But very comfortable.
Location- easy access all over the island and just a few minutes from either Lihue or Kapaa.
The Owner: A special thank you for the thoughtful gift on our 20th anniversary, and for the homegrown papaya and lilykoi.
All of this for a fraction of the cost of our Maui rental and far more beautiful.
I can’t say enough about this rental on the most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands.

      Cool and peaceful.

Left on 07/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012

This cottage was a very nice home for us for 5 nights on the beautiful east side of Kauai. In addition to the description on the website and vrbo, we offer the following comments:

      - The bed was comfortable.
      - We very much appreciated the owners sensitivity to chemicals. The cottage has mostly natural surfaces and very little interior paint, and pests are kept at bay using minimal chemicals. Eco-friendly laundry detergent is provided too.
      - We had a cool breeze at all times. We never felt hot or muggy without air conditioning.
      - The refrigerator and freezer were very small, especially since we needed to put everything in there to keep ants to a minimum.
      - The washer and dryer were inside the cottage and were roomy enough for beach towels and wet clothes. (Everything was wet. It rained a little every day. We aren't complaining. It was a lovely, refreshing shower.)
      - In addition to two kayaks, which we paddled up the Wailua to the Fern Grotto and Secret Falls, the owner provides beach towels, beach chairs, noodles, various coolers (which might help with the small refrigerator issue, wish we had thought of that before!), life jackets, and possibly other water toys I've forgotten about.
      - Some vacation rentals keep condiments, etc, left by previous guests, but this one had a very basic supply. Fortunately Food Land and Safeway are a few minutes away.
      - Roosters crow loudly and constantly from about 3:30 am until shortly after sunrise. We had this comment everywhere on the island, not just at this cottage. This was a big bummer since the breeze through the open windows was so incredibly pleasant. If you bring really good earplugs, this problem can maybe be overcome.
      - There is a lot of vegetation on the property which gives the place a jungle/treehouse feel but obscures any view.
      - It is very easy to find the cottage even at night (there are no street lights so it gets nice and dark at night) because there is a big obvious landmark right before the driveway.
      - The cottage is tiny but has a very smart floor plan with toilet, shower and bath all in separate areas so both of us could get ready at the same time.

Tea Garden Cottage was a wonderful escape from the hotel scene and tourist traps. We enjoyed having a place to call home during our week on Kauai. It was nice to be able to cook dinners, instead of having to eat out every night. It was quiet (except for the roosters), quaint and private. I especially enjoyed the outdoor shower!

      Perfect Kauai home base

Left on 11/14/2011 for a stay in November 2011

This cottage is amazing. It's got the rustic feel of a cabin, but sophisticated elements such as a screened-in indoor-outdoor jacuzzi, free wi-fi, beautiful slate floors, and giant windows everywhere.

It's a 15 minute drive to Kapa'a for food and beaches, and you're pretty central on the island for everything else. (If you go to Kapa'a, I recommend renting snorkel gear from the super-friendly guys at Snorkel Bob's, and getting delcious poke at the Pono Market and shave ice at the Ono Ono stand.)

The cottage has a 4 burner gas stove, a microwave, giant toaster-oven, and half-size fridge. All the pans, silverware, dishes, etc. you'll need for any meal. Washer and dryer come in handy after muddy hikes in Waimea Canyon. Bed is full size and comfy. Outdoor shower (don't worry, it's private) is fun and refreshing.

Caveats: the big windows in the bedroom are not covered, so you'll get lots of light. Bring an eyeshade if you like to sleep in. But it's worth it for the amazing view you get from bed in the morning!
Also, lots of noisy roosters, but that's true of everywhere in Kauai. We wore earplugs to sleep. (The roosters are kind of charming after you get used to them.) And bring some mosquito repellant- again, something that's all over Kauai, it's not just at the cottage.

You'll love this place- after a day of running around in the sun, it's nice to come back to this beautiful rural cottage and enjoy the garden and jacuzzi tub.

I can not even begin to express my gratitude for this beautiful little cottage. The energy here is amazing! The view is beyond spectacular and the outdoor sunken stone tub completely rejuvenated me daily. It's like being in the midst of nature, outdoor stone shower included. We would definitely recommend it to friends that go to Kauai. Charlotte was also very helpful and accommodating.

This was an amazing place to stay. It's away from the beaches, but only a 10 minute drive. Set in a cozy, forested area with natural beauty galore. Lovely gardens, outdoor areas, and all the amenities you could want to enjoy your stay: including coolers, boogie boards, and snorkel gear. The interior is lovely, clean, and let us enjoy our stay even more by providing all the little extras. Oh, and the bathtub? Heaven! As was the outdoor shower in the morning.

      Charming & Peaceful UpCountry Cottage

Left on 12/04/2010 for a stay in November 2010

This place is even more charming in person than on the website. Quite comfortable and clean as well. My only complaint (other than the impossibly rude roosters in the area) is the beautiful slate outdoor shower. This house is right off the road, and there were workmen around the property or next door most days I was there. Although the shower faces the back of the property, there is no privacy whatsoever. I definitely did not feel safe enough to shower outside. All it needs is a saloon style door, and it would be perfect. Luckily, the jacuzzi tub off the screened lanai is amazing.

Also, the grounds must have been overgrown when I was there, as there were not two acres available (just a small side yard), and I never found the trail they say is directly adjacent to the property. Trail up the street is easy to find. It would have been helpful if a small map showing the trails were included with the keys, as close proximity to hiking trails was one of the reasons I chose to stay here.

One other comment - washer/dryer is great to have, but no detergent is provided. If you're planning on doing your laundry, throw some detergent in a baggie in your luggage in order to avoid having to buy it locally (most of which you won't use, unless you're staying a long time).

I'm very sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations completely. The Cottage is our only rental property and we take pride in providing excellent accommodations for our guests. Our main house, not visible from the Cottage, is down the same driveway and across the small valley - just giving us a call when you need something allows us to help you have a perfect stay.
I'm glad to hear that you found the Moalepe trail just up the street. The Sleeping Giant trail is about a 5 minute drive away. I think your idea to put a small map with the keys is great .
We have provided an awning for the shower in the past, but since the plumeria tree has now grown in, we did not replace it when it got worn out. We will be happy to do so now though so that our guests can have the choice to use it or not. Thank you for your feedback and we sincerely hope that you might give us a try again sometime down the road. Aloha, Charlotte

      The highlight of my trip!!

Left on 09/19/2010 for a stay in August 2010

This is the cutest, most romantic place you could ever stay at! The cottage was the perfect size for a couple and it felt like a home-away-from-home, except better because my house doesn't have an outdoor shower or jacuzzi open to the patio and 'forest' outside! The cottage was immaculate and Charlotte has supplied pretty much everything you would need for your stay (things like beach towel, extra bath towels, pens, batteries, condiments/cooking supplies, water, first aid supplies, sunscreen, beach novels, kauai guidebooks, etc etc.) Before we left for Kauai, we were thinking, it would be nice to have candles next to the jacuzzi, should we bring some? Guess what we found in the cute little cupboard next to the jacuzzi? A whole bunch of tealights and tealight holders! (Oh and I forgot the cd player with the Hawaiian music that welcomed us on our first day!)

Charlotte was wonderful, even though we didn't meet her in person--she'd left the keys for us on the table when we 'checked-in' and trusted us to leave the majority of our payment on the table on our check-out date. She also was kind enough to let us check out really late since our flight wasn't until the evening and we wanted to go for one last snorkel in the morning and come back to shower before checking out.

Staying here upped our vacation from good to great! It definitely wouldn't have felt as paradise-y if we'd stayed at a resort. The only maybe downside I can see is the location for some people. It's in the residential area up in the hills. It's a short ten min drive to the town on the main road which wasn't a big deal for us since I wanted the isolation.

      Kauai Tea Garden Cottage Review

Left on 07/05/2010 for a stay in June 2010

This was our first visit to the island of Kauai, and this cottage was simply a lovely place to stay. It is beautifully designed and decorated. The big window in the bedroom looks out into jungle green trees. Very peaceful and quiet. There is no proper living room but we loved sitting in the kitchen with two sides of big windows or on the glider in the screened in porch. All that green was such a treat for our tired desert eyes. The tub and outdoor shower were treats too! It is a great location if you want to be on the eastern part of the island. Not too far from shopping and dining, but far enough away to feel like you are tucked away from it all in a tropical paradise. This would be a wonderful spot for honeymooners!

If you're looking for a little R&R, this is the cottage for you!

Left on 06/25/2010 for a stay in June 2010

When I was planning our "second honeymoon," I was drawn to Kauai because of its laid back nature among such incredible beauty. As I searched for accommodations, I had already decided that I didn’t want to stay at a hotel or in a resort area. I wanted the have our space, as it was a romantic getaway. Finding cottages in Kauai was a lot harder than I had anticipated, as there aren’t as many as you might find on the other islands. After searching for a few days, I came across the Tea Garden Cottage and was immediately intrigued by it. I was looking for privacy, peacefulness, and a Jacuzzi! The cottage offered all of that and more—a beautifully landscaped yard, an outdoor shower (it was such a treat!), and the cottage was stocked with anything and everything you can imagine that you’ll need or want during your stay.

Kauai is certainly rooster country, as in they are literally everywhere! Each morning you will rise to the songs of birds and joined by those silly roosters cock-a-doodling, and at night you will fall asleep to the sight of gentle geckos clinging to the windows or walls.

My husband and I both felt so refreshed and happy about the choice of our accommodations. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for a true Hawaiian experience away from it all.

We really loved our stay at the Cottage. We spent our honeymoon there and enjoyed being away from the resorts and touristy things. We also loved the outside shower, you can see the stars at night/early morning or listen to birds while you shower. We also found the kitchen to be so convenient and a huge money saver. We will definitely stay there again when we come back.

The only thing is while we were there, there were ants that got into the garbage and some of our food.

I loved the Tea Garden in Kapaa. You will truly get an authentic Kauai experience as you stay in a local area, travel down to town and hang out eating delicious seafood. I recommend Mermaid's- a local favorite for a seafood burrito wrap. The Tea Garden cottage is a mellow place to relax, as you fall asleep on the cozy bed, take a meditative shower in the outdoor slate shower, smell the tropical fruits and smell of BBQ along the road as you drive to town. It's got a swank kitchen so you can cook and store your own food, and a lovely serene bathtub. Make sure to book a trip along the Na Pali Coast- as it is the most breathtaking place I've seen. A hike up Sleeping Giant is right around the corner, and there are plenty of chill sandy beaches with the most vibrant blue water, rivers to kayak down, waterfalls to swing like tarzan by, and 100s of dolphins. You will love it.

My husband and I are in our early 50's. We have been to Kauai 4 times always staying in Poipu in the summer. We wanted to try something different. We treated ourselves to a February trip, and booked this lovely cottage in the hills about 15 minutes up out of Kapaa. It is a wonderful, intimate place. The cottage is in very good shape, very clean, and has a modern, zen feel. A great kitchen (I love to cook) and a covered outdoor grill. Comfortable bed, a fantastic screened porch with a raised bathtup to view the "jungle" while soaking. Outdoor shower. Combo washer/dryer, kayak for your use if desired. Wake to the birdsong and tradewinds in the trees. We would go back in a heartbeat!

Close to Waiamea Falls. Easy access to trails and hiking, wonderful birds and wildlife, Only ten minutes or less to the beach, thirty minutes to Hanalei and very close to the Kauai's best luau (Smith's). Lovely setting with serene soaking tub. Romatic outdoor shower. Great botanical setting.
Sea kayaks included with house, rent a Jeep at the airport and you are set for a wonderful adventure!!
Recommendations: try the Huki Lau for great food and view (beachside dinner) No crowds no rush no fuss. Cottage was also wonderful for the serene atmosphere....all you can hear is the wildlife in the surrounding jungle. Cottage also has the most wonderful and comfortable bed...very comfortable mattress.
Least favorite thing??? Can't really think of one, we were there on our honeymoon and were very lucky to have found the Tea Cottage. Thanks Charlotte!

      hello,

I stayed at the cottage for a couple of days and I really like the atmosphere. the japanese style is very nice, but the best feature is the jacuzzi whirlpool tub, partly in the open. that's where I hung out most of the time, in the tub.

don't get irritated by the roosters, they're everywhere on the island, after 1-2 nights you'll get used to it, if you're a city slicker like me.

it's a bit too close to a road to be absolutely serene, but traffic is almost non-existent in the evening and during the night.

fully furbished kitchen and washing machine, good for a longer stay.

good location to travel the island.

all in all a very nice, check it out.
