San Jose, 95135, United StatesBest house to go if you are visiting the Champagne ponds
Left on 04/16/2012 for a stay in April 2012
Went here for three nights. The house itself is nice. There are two bedrooms upstairs and some detached bedrooms downstairs. We only occupied the upstairs. They have wireless internet and satellite TV. Also the Kitchen area has everything you need to cook. They have a blender, toaster, microwave, oven, and stove. Also many pans, plates, and knives.
The worst part about this place is the somewhat remote location. It is about 30 minutes from Hilo and 15 minutes from Pahoa, which has a grocery store. If you are visiting the Volcano, Zoo,the Waterfalls, or just want to go to the store, it is a bit of a drive. That being said, the best part of our stay there was snorkeling in the lagoon and pond area.
The reason to book this place is, of course, the private backyard lagoon. There is a ridiculous amount of fish there. Be careful when feeding them as they do bite. Buying a head of romaine lettuce and holding it out was the best way to hand feed.
Also worth visiting is the public pond right next to the Lagoon. We were happy to find steps in the backyard out to that pond. That pond is just as warm as the Lagoon. There are not as many fish there, but we were able to see an eel and a turtle there. Go early to the public lagoon as it fills up as the day goes on.
There are many other houses with similar ponds. When we walked the neighborhood, you can see them, but they do not have nearly the amount of fish in them. So this is the house to book to get the full effect.
The house had a lot of life vests, a few noodles, several kick boards, a few poor looking snorkels, and maybe 1 or 2 pairs of usable fins when we visited. It is a good size lagoon, though after the fifth time you snorkeled it, you probably aren't going to see anything new. Good place to learn snorkeling since there are no waves. I would definitely recommend renting. -

This was our second visit, and it was great again! We love the convenience of walking outside and hopping into the lagoon. Sadly, Puffy was no longer with us, however, another puffer was definitely shaping up to take Puffy's place! Can't wait to come back.

This is our favorite place to stay on the Big Island, and our second time there. Best part is swimming with the fishies. The house may not have the most modern furnishings, but is very comfortable and has everything you might need. There were a few less masks, fins, and lagoon toys this year, but they probably don't get the best treatment from guests. Can't wait to stay there again, hopefully next year.

The Lagoon House is truly a paradise! As soon as we arrived, the tropical fish, the lagoon, and the ocean immediately absorbed us. The house itself is perfect for a family, with all the necessary amenities - definitely more comfortable than a hotel.
Our son & daughter adored feeding the fish and swimming with them, as well as exploring the surrounding area and the Champagne Pond (easily accessed by walking to the end of the property). We even saw two sea turtles there.
Puffy is charming, and would always come to the surface when we arrived. We really liked the two Mourish Idols, whom the kids dubbed "Toe-dee" and "Toe-dum" for their propensity to nibble at your toes, the surgeon fish and the box fish (assuming we identified them correctly using the fish-identification book at the house). A gecko in the house became a source of amusement, as it would occasionally poke its head out of random corners or ledges and climb up the walls.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to stay here; even though this was a working vacation (the wifi network was a great enabler), we snorkeled every day, and we all loved it.
We left Lagoon House well rested & recharged with great memories -- it was frankly Awesome. -

What a fantastic place. The Lagoon is out of this world, well kept, clean, beautifully designed and full of fish. My kids spent hours in there every day using the thoughtfully provided snorkels and floaties. The house is charming and simple. Not super fancy, but that's no good for a family with kids anyway. It like a home from home.

We had such a wonderful time at Lagoon House. We didn't even know such a place existed in this world. The lagoon is warm, the fish is amazingly friendly, and the ocean view is so gorgeous right in your backyard. Snorkeling just doesn't get better than this! The kids really enjoy patting and feeding Puffy and "Boxy" (friendliest box fish)! They're also very entertained by the boxes of toys the owner has left in the house. My 7-year-old didn't enjoy open water snorkeling because of the waves and sea urchins, but she snorkel at the warm lagoon twice a day, truly enjoyed feeding, swimming with the hundreds of fish. This is an experience we'll never forget!

Left on 10/24/2011 for a stay in October 2011
The location is probably one of the best in Hawaii...oceanside with a perfect ocean view, private thermal pool with hundreds(maybe thousands) of tropical fish, adjacent to Champagne pond, which is one of Hawaii's best thermal ponds, and in a gated community. Management staff was attentive and always responded promptly. We really appreciated our early check-in and late check-out. Check-in/out was simple and accessible at all hours of the day. Our kids really wanted to feed the fish, the fish food was empty so they had someone out that day delivering fish food. Things that go along with living in the tropics that we weren't use to but adapted to ac but the ocean breeze was always more than adequate, unless you had to close the house; bugs which we northerners are not use to; and no direct inside access to basement from main floor. We will definitely vacation again at Lagoon was one of our BEST vacation experiences!!!

We kept this vacation a surprise from our kids until the day we left. I'm glad we did! They were so surprised they could barely contain themselves lol. They were in the lagoon every day for hours and absolutely loved all the fish. Especially Puffy. They got a real kick out of being able to pet Puffy too:). Lexington, VA, United StatesBest Pond in the area!
Left on 07/04/2011 for a stay in June 2011
The water is amazing. There was no need to go to the Champagne Pond or any of the others. We tried the others and Lagoon House's pond is far better. Very unique.
The actual house is comfortable and adequate but likely in need of some updating. I felt like it was much smaller than it appeared in the photographs and it is essentially a two bedroom, one bath house. The third bedroom and the second bath are not connected to the main living areas and are accessed from outside so be sure not to count on that for young children. The furniture was all very comfortable and the house had absolutely everything we needed. The master bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was particularly well stocked. The hammock in the yard was great!
We needed a couple of maintenance things addressed and the rental company was VERY responsive. I left the message and they came right out and took care of it. Very pleased with the service and they were great about responding to my questions.
I was surprised at just how far away the property was from towns and stores. I did not anticipate from looking at a map how much time we would spend in a car going to see other sights or picking up supplies. I'm not sure I would pick the location as a base for sightseeing this side of the island again. But it is absolutely worth a few days to stay where you take in all you need.
I would stay at Lagoon House again for the lagoon. I wouldn't pick it for the house itself, if that makes sense. The fish were a lot of fun for all of us and enjoyed feeding them very much. Folks of all ages will enjoy the pond, the views and the snorkeling. -

Staying at the Lagoon House was the best vacation we have ever had. The highlight was feeding the fish. Our only disappointment was that, 14 years ago when we stayed there before, there wasn't a house right next door, so it wasn't as private. But that's just progress for you.
And a note to the owners, the pocket door in the kitchen to the carport needs repair. -

Where else Cld the kids swim in a 85 degree aquarium with thousands of fish all eating out of their hands? We had a great time. Property is VERY old and for that kind of $$ per night they should supply toliet paper. Furniture very old and uncomfortable, tiny old TV made movie night a challenge. With a little update, Cld be a number 1 vacation rental.

Left on 04/27/2011 for a stay in April 2011
The location, set in the lush East side of Big Island, was wonderful. The regular rainfall and unspoilt surroundings makes this side of the island our favourite, and a real contrast to the more commercial Kona coast which we enjoyed for our second week in Hawaii. The lagoon itself was or course a major hit with all six of us and Puffy was a real character! Perhaps the accommodation should be described a little more explicitly as the third bedroom (with bunk beds) being totally separate from the main house was not suitable for the children to be in and we had to end up with 2 adults and 2 children on the floor in one of the two bedrooms in the house! Still a wonderful experience, and we would love to come again!

We were very happy w/Lagoon House. It lived up to all our expectations and we'll certainly be back. The lagoon simply is one of a kind and the entire family loved swimming in our own private warm water pool full of tropical fish! Our only (minor) concern is the cockroaches. The house was clean, don't get me wrong. And we understand it is a tropical climate, but there were cockroaches in the kitchen and living areas on a constant basis - and they move fast! Is a fumigation possible in a tropical climate? Or roach traps? Or how about extra-long fly swatters? We followed instructions and kept ALL our food in the fridge. Again, this is a minor concern and it IS a tropical climate. We loved Lagoon House.

The pond was unbelievable! Puffy was so cute and friendly! What a beautiful view to wake up to every morning. This location is wow! Awesome for my 2 year old and my 11 year old. Hard to find a place that caters to both of their needs since they are at such different places in their development. A wonderful selection of games, movies and books for down time. Overall a great experience. We will have many special memories of visiting our family here in Kapoho. Just a small note, the only way that I can imagine this place any better would be if the beds were a little more comfy. They were kind of hard and the pillows stiff. This is the reason for the 4 stars on the general condition. Still definitely worth it. I would recommend this place to anyone.

This was the absolute best vacation our family ever had. It was like living as a local and really felt like we were so far away from the chaos we left behind. We felt so refreshed and still do 2 weeks later. We had come down to visit our uncle who lives 20 minutes down the main road. At first we thought maybe we should have been staying closer to him. It would have saved some driving each day, but we never would have had the unique experience of our personal watering hole. But, I think the reason it was so special was having the lagoon - it was swimming in our own private tropical fish tank every day. Can't wait for our return visit.

This was our second visit to the Lagoon House. We brought family on this trip and used all the bedrooms! The back bedroom ceiling fan did not work well, and the bed was small and hard. So, as a couple, we had to separate and sleep in the living room. The other quests said their beds were hard too, but the air flow was good. We bought an extra fan and bed pads to help the sleeping conditions. I definitely would not recommend the house for more than one couple. The back bedroom is not suited to a couple. The other beds are more for one adult or children.

We had a fabulous stay at the Lagoon House. The snorkeling in Lagoon House's tidal pond in 87 degree water with beautiful (and friendly) tropical fish was fantastic. Lagoon House's pond is directly adjacent to Champagne Pond which is open to the public. We could see Champagne Pond from our lanai and had a lot of fun watching the frequent visits from locals (with their music blaring from their trucks) and tourists (who stuck out usually due to their fair complexions). We went snorkeling in Champagne pond (usually in the early mornings before anyone else got there) in the hopes of seeing the turtles but didn't see any on this trip. We did see trumpet fish and a variety of other fish (though not as good as in the Lagoon House's pond). The house has a very well equipped kitchen, plenty of towels (you'll need them), snorkeling masks/fins, water toys, hair dryer, curling iron, toys, books, DVD's,and a fabulous collection of National Geographic Magazines from the 40's and 50's. We really enjoyed fedding Puffy, the huge porcupine fish as well as the rest of the beautiful fish in the pond. We even saw several moray eels in the pond. You must go to the Hilo and Maku'u Farmer's Markets to stock up on fresh fruits and produce during your stay.

I live on island - Kona side(my family that came to visit is from NC), and have seen many of the great gems on island, I will have to say this house is one! The house is nice and will have everything you need, but not over the top fancy...but who cares...we spent all our time in the lagoon! It was full of fish (even more than the Champagne pond...that is less than 5 steps away!)
My only word of warning, is temporary, they are building a home next door, so there is a bit of construction noise, but the homeowners association (what we were told) only allows them to work from 8-5 (and no weekends), so not such a big deal. Its a tiny house being built so should be up and complete in a hurry!
Kapoho is a great place to get away from it all, beware that a great thing will happen....your cell phone wont work! Yippie! (There is a house phone for emergencies)
I will lounge in your lagoon again! Tell puffy we miss her!

What an incredible vacation! We were in the lagoon enjoying the warm water and the amazing fish as soon as we arrived at the house. I said to my 7 year old son - "This is a great rental" and he said "No Mommy, this is paradise!". We had many activities planned around the area but ended up changing our plans and spending most of our time at the house. My 4 year old son learned to snorkel and a highlight was feeding Puffy and all of the fish. We will be back.

The location of Lagoon House is unbeatable. To be able to open the door and swim in the private lagoon with Puffy and the other fish made it all worth it. TV didn't work, but who cared? We also stayed at two resorts on the west side of the island, but all of us agreed Lagoon House was the best.

We were there to celebrate as family group a 50th and 80th birthday. We were very pleased with the location, view, atmosphere, snorkling pond and outstanding tropical fish, variety of indoor and outdoor sitting areas. All very relaxing and wonderfull. The home was very clean and the kitchen pretty well equipped for cooking. Having web access was a plus (although it was not clear from frig insturctions that the wireless access was the manufactor's printed WEP access).
The only major concern/negative was the fact the sleeping areas are pretty much for 2 adults as couple and an another adult single and rest kids. It should be advertised as such. We had five adults (luckily as family unit). In our group, an adult on the twin bed shared the master bedroom with his parents. Another couple split up with one on the full bed in the other upstairs room and downstairs on the bunk bed. A number of us had rented homes for small and large groups and suggest/recommend the owners may consider removing the permanently installed furniture and overhead bed in the upstairs bed and bunk room to improve the sleeping flexibility. -

The House was very fun, but I think the price was a bit high. The bedroom set up was a little difficult because there was 2 couples. the second bedroom is small and the dbl bed really small. If there could be a queen. The dishes were clean but all of them very old. don't get me wrong we had a great time and would book again, but a little lower price would be better. House was very clean, good housekeeper there.

We had a wonderful time at Lagoon House. The location is just amazing! The water in the lagoon is so warm and clear and we loved swimming with the tropical fish. I really can not think of a better place for a relaxing family vacation. Both our kids learnt to snorkel and spent hours each day in the water. Some minor maintenance would make this house even more awesome.

We stayed at Lagoon House for the two weeks we spent on the Big Island. We saw/did tons of things but the very best part was relaxing at Lagoon House, swimming with the amazing fish and making friends with Puffy. I can't rave about this place enough. You will not regret staying here!!

Hi - a little too conjested for our liking, and the all-day camping, plus weekend campers who stay directly across were not only an eye-sore and security concern, but also did not allow for much sleep on our Friday night. I was very thankful we had chosen to leave on the Saturday instead of the planned Sunday departure.

My parents and I spent 3 nights at the Lagoon House, and my only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. What an amazing place! The lagoon is out of this world, with so many different fish, and of course, Puffy! We had planned on doing lots of different things on the Big Island, but ended up spending most of our time at home because we didn't want to leave! Can't wait to go back again :)

We could not have asked for a better place to stay for our first trip to the big island. We canceled plans just to stay home and snorkel all day. There is no need to go any place else, all you need is right there with the lagoon, champagne pond and ocean. We all fell in love with Puffy and his friends. Many thanks to the owners for their wonderful hospitality.

The Lagoon house is paradise. Having your own snorkeling pond is the best! All the fish are friendly, especially Puffy, but even the eel comes out to eat for you. I never had to worry about my kids and the undertow of the ocean's current. The house provides everything you could need. It is peaceful and relaxing. If I could I would just move in!! Thanks for a fantastic time!

The lagoon itself is absolutely amazing! We absolutely loved swimming around with the beautiful tropical fish. and feeding them was loads of fun! The house itself is rather old, with a retro 60's feel to it, so don't expect a modern, brand new home. It is cozy and loaded with books and videos though. This was a memorable vacation experience that we will never forget!

If we could we would purchase this property. The location for us was great. We were looking to get away from everything and relax. The pond is awesome. We could have just spent our vacation hanging out there. We will greatly miss feeding "Puffy", she is adorable. Who knew you could become attached to a fish. The owners were so wonderful, stopping by right away to see if we needed anything and to answer any questions we had. We hope to come back for another stay.

The thermal pond stocked with beautiful fish was awesome! My 7 year old grand daughter was so excited to be snorkeling with fish! And she loved feeding them. We were able to swim with the turtle in Champagne Pond, too! The ocean views were beautiful. The owners furnished all swim and snorkel gear. We didn't need a thing! The sound and sight of the ocean waves nearby was beautiful. The memorabilia of Ray Bolger was fun to learn about. We had a marvelous time. What a great memory for all of us!

This was a place and is hard to describe unless you've been there. It was a beautiful home and very unusual with the personal lagoon and the incredibly friendly fish. Especially, Puffy the pufferfish. I absolutely adored her and she was the friendliest fish I've ever encountered. The water in the lagoon was so so warm and inviting. The grounds are beautiful at the house and the momento cabinet dedicated to Ray Bolger (tin man from wizard of oz) was a real plus. I would recommend this house to anyone. I hope to return. It was truly awesome.

Our recent stay at Lagoon House was a trip to remember. Unlike most vacations we take, we spent most of our time just relaxing at the Lagoon House. We thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling in our private lagoon and Champagne Pond. Puffy the pufferfish was the highlight of our time in the lagoon. Our 3 yr old was kept entertained by the numerous boxes of toys, movies, and of course the lagoon fish. Fresh fruit, fresh flowers, incredible view, tranquil setting...we had a fantastic time!! The owners, Ann and Richard, were so pleasant and provided some helpful tips. The staff, Su and Tara, were incredibly polite and helpful also!! We will recommend this rental to everyone we know! Thanks again!

Lagoon House was a perfect place to stay for a vacation in paradise, especially if you love sea life. Having a private snorkeling lagoon was better than I could have even imagined. The fish are amazing, I have snorkeled in many places and it was incredible to be able to see and feed these wonderful fish in your own private aquarium. The sea turtles right there in Champagne Pond...Wow! The owners are caring and helpful and have obviously put a lot of time, energy and love into the place. This place was better than anywhere I have ever rented. The location is ideal, away from tourist traps with the beach and snorkeling right in your own back yard. The place was spotless and had all the amenities you could hope for, I can't say enough about how wonderful the place was. I am ready to go back already and am recommending the Lagoon House to all my friends. Feeding the fish in the lagoon is an incredible experience and the beauty and tranquility of the place can't be beat. Perfect paradise.

The Lagoon House exceeded our expectations and was an absolutely incredible and unique place to stay on the Big Island! The lagoon provided a safe, interactive snorkeling experience for our children (and whimpy mom here really liked the warm water). Our whole family loved swimming with hundreds of beautiful fish and creatures and became quite attached to Puffy, a cute, hand-fed porcupine fish. The sunrise and star views framed with palm trees were picturesque. The nearby waterfalls, forests, lava flows, and scenery were magnificant, when we finally parted from the house for a while. And the fresh exotic flower bouquets and organic fruit topped it off! This place cannot be beat!

We are a family of seven adults, from four different cities, who spent a week together. We specifically wanted to be near the Volcanoes National Park. and to be able to swim. We did NOT want a "mainland style" hotel. It was great to be able to have the kitchen for breakfasts and supper. Most days we had lunch out. Some of us preferred to stay at the house to savor the quiet and beauty rather than drive all over the Big Island. Having the warm lagoon and gorgeous fish was incredible! A once-in-a-lifetime experience. We did arrive after dark and had some difficulty locating the house. A map or drawing of the streets after the gatehouse would have helped, as would have a few lights on. Some of the furniture could be refreshed or spruced up, but did not put a damper on our enjoyment overall. We would definitely go back, and making the arrangements was pleasantly easy. Mahalo!

Left on 01/01/2009 for a stay in December 2008
This was our 4th stay at Lagoon House at about this time of year. The only thing that could have been better was the weather, and I really don't hold either the owners or the rental agency responsible for a State-wide storm. And the storm helped keep down the campers across champagne pond, and any fireworks noise from early New Year's parties.
The pond was well stocked and remarkably clean. As always.
The house is perfect for relaxing and is stocked with a wonderful library that will appeal to readers of all ages, as well as games, music, videos and TV for those who don't even want to read. As always, but the TV system has been recently upgraded.
The Wi-Fi is fast and works throughout the house, so I was able to take care of enough work to get some more comp time after my official break is over. As always [at least for the past two years when the feature was added]
Ann and Richard had the entire house beautifully decorated in both objets d'art and in tropical flower arrangements. As always there were more than enough fresh exotic fruits provided, and the kitchen equipment was such that we didn't need to bring a single thing other than our own food.
We'll be back again and again. -
