My 85 yo mother-in-law, my husband and two adult kids thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this comfortable family home. The ponds were full of turtles and fish, the kitchen supplies were adequate for a family that loves to cook and eat, beds/linens were nice and comfy, though not hotel lush. This is clearly a family retreat with the focus on location in a lovely neighborhood.

We absolutely loved staying at this vacation rental. How can you go wrong with an ocean view out the kitchen window, and the tide pools just steps away. We enjoyed snorkling, swimming, and just hanging out in the water with the turtles. It was absolutely magical. Our only complaint was the dated furnishings, dull knives, and worn towels and bed sheets. Those are all easy upgrades that would be much appreciated by all your guests. Wifi would also have been nice since our cell phones did not work. But then again, it was nice to be out of touch. Thanks for a wonderful relaxing time.

Left on 02/06/2012 for a stay in February 2012
The house was just beautiful and had a view of the lagoons. It felt like old Hawaii. Very nice. We could swim in the warm lagoon and saw turtles and lots of fish. I enjoyed the Hawaiian music which played from the TV. There was a nice large bathroom. A wonderful and relaxing stay. The tidepools about 1 mile away were amazing - lots of different corral. It would be nice if the bed was King size - it felt like a full size. Overall, a wonderful place and I would like to come back again.

Honolulu, HIGreat location, would definitely recommend it
Left on 12/06/2011 for a stay in November 2011
It was a perfect place for my family and I to stay for a relaxing vacation. The location is amazing and I spent every morning snorkeling and swimming out back. I saw 8 sea turtles in less than 20 minutes! It is also a quiet and secluded neighborhood away from noise and crowds.
The only issue I had was I thought there were two bedrooms upstairs and a separate cottage downstairs with one bedroom. But there is one bedroom upstairs and 2 connected rooms downstairs, with a flimsy door shade, not an actual door. But it worked out fine, just wouldn't recommend the downstairs rooms if you wanted more privacy. -
San Francisco, CASwim with turtles (& shark) at your doorstep in sunny Kapoho
Left on 11/15/2011 for a stay in November 2011
How better can that be? Away from the crowds on the Kona side, but still enjoy the sun & ocean on the rainy Hilo side! Get spoiled with geothermally heated ocean water right at your door step and snorkel with turtles and the reef shark.
The house is very tasteful (all wood!) & clean (as clean as it can be in the humidity of the region). The only critique would be that the selection of pots and pans is limited - and that the advertised snorkeling equipment is unusable. (just bring your own!) -

The entire area was breath-taking. The views from the house are excellent. It was quiet, private, and just the perfect place. We booked at the last minute took the first thing we could find on-line. Had no preference of island, just that it be private
and quiet. I couldn't have picked a better place if I had searched for months and had done a lot of research. We would love to make it an annual trip and stay in the exact same place, Hale Lokelani. Can't say enough good things. -

How lucky to be able to swim in your very own saltwater aquarium! This was an absolutely marvelous place to stay, and we would return in a heartbeat. There were more fish here than in the Champagne Pond down the road, so no need to walk farther than just
down the steps. (Hint: while the water is clear anytime, the best time to snorkel is at low tide). -

This was an absolutely beautiful place to stay. Walking down to swim with the sea turtles every morning was fantastic. The view from the lanai was breathtaking and so soothing. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. It was clean, but some pots and pans need replacing. It was tricky to find; lots of instructions to pick up key, and then on to the property. Management needs to provide better directions. We were excited to find snorkeling equip, but upon closer inspection, most of it was unusable,ie: torn, mismatched, broken. Could use a pull-out couch bed in the main living area. Overall, we were very happy. Thank you!!

The location of this house is really special - in a gated community, it has, at the end of the back yard, a stairway to a tidal pool, complete with a lovely selection of fish and sea turtles! Wonderful for snorkelling! There is easy access to Champagne Pond, and nearby is the Lava Trees State Park. We used it as a base for seeing the volcano and visiting Hilo, and we weren't disappointed - despite the rain! (You can't have rainforests if it doesn't rain, after all!)
I visited with my husband, two teenagers and my father. The accommodation on the first floor is homely and nicely set out, with plentiful kitchen implements and crockery. The lanai has a beautiful view of the pools. There is only outside access to the downstairs apartment, which would make the house unsuitable for young families, and the decor and feel of it is much more utilitarian than upstairs. However, as it was only used for sleeping and we congregated upstairs for eating and socialising, it was not a huge problem for us.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would certainly recommend it! -

Hale Lokelani at Kapoho Beach is a lovely home in a great location with lots of amenities (decent non-stick pots and pans, condiments, a variety of tourist books, fairly large screen flat TV, water shoes/snorkels/fins, etc). If I were the owner(s), I would: 1)recane the seats of the two kitchen chairs; 2) fix the sticky problem on the wood kitchen counters; 3) invest in good mattresses....the queen bed upstairs was very hard while the twin mattresses in the downstairs bedroom caved in the middle; 4) replace the air-conditioner in the upstairs bedroom; 5) upgrade the couch in the living room that was covered with a blanket. All of the couches had low backs that weren't particularly comfortable. Because the downstairs was separate from the upstairs, the house is more suited to two couples rather than a family with kids. For this reason, I would put a queen bed in the basement bedroom.

Left on 01/11/2011 for a stay in January 2011
We were excited to leave Kona and check out the Hilo/Puna/Kapoho area of the Big Island. Hale Lokelani did not disappoint! We immediately went to check out the private swimming tidepool where two turtles bobbed up from the water to say hello. My 10 year old son jumped in and started swimming. It turned out we had 4 turtles in our pond and tons and tons of fish and even an eel. The house is broken up into two. Upstairs with the master bedroom/bath and downstairs with a smaller unit with 4 twin beds. Our kids ended up sleeping on the sofas upstairs which worked out fine. The house was so comfortable and was very well equipped, large and clean. Even though some of the appliances were a bit tricky (dryer can only be used in the timed cycle or it would not stop) it was fine otherwise. We loved everything about the house, the location, how close we were to Champagne Pond (although to be honest, we felt that our private pond was the best compared to even Waiopae (Vacationland) ponds and even Alanahui which was packed with people. It was nice to get produce on Friday at nearby Green Lake farmers market. It was also nice to drive directly to the lava road near Kaimu which was so close and see real live lava demolish one neighborhood and the road. Overall, Kapoho Beach Community is a special place that we will definitely come back to. We found it to be the nicest neighborhood in all of the Big Island and hope to visit there again someday.

This is a great location. Your back stairs go directly into your own aquarium complete with turtles. I can't say enough about how unique and beautiful this setting is. The house is very well equipped with everything a renter can ask for including snorkel gear. We stayed a week and wish we had longer. The upstairs of the house is awesome. The downstairs suite is much smaller and the kitchen is not full so if you need a full kitchen you have to use the one upstairs. Some of the house needs some maintenance (like gutters and hand rails on stairs)but it doesn't interfere with the enjoyment of the house.
It was very clean and there was music playing for us when we entered. It was a nice Hawaiian touch which certainly made us feel welcome. If you want to explore the east side of the Island I would certainly recommend this place. We can hardly wait to go back. -

Very nice place for someone who wants to get away from it all and basically isolate themselves from all society. The "no visitors" rule needs to change because it made me feel like an inmate on lockdown with absolutely no visitation rights! Both neighbors homes were about 20 feet away from the house. The neighbors on Kapoho Joe's side were very unfriendly. They let their little mutts run around and continuously barked at us. They often wondered back and forth through the back yards of a few properties including Hale Lokelani. ALL OF THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING YOU!!!!!

Amongst the many emails we received regarding the booking, we mistakenly printed off the wrong email and arrived late afternoon on a bank holiday without the proper information to get access to the property, only realizing our error upon arrival. The property manager was really accomodating, considering our last-minute request. This is really a fabulous place, location, everything.
But the maintenance needs some attention. The ice-maker was not working, nor the air conditioner. We made do without either. Actually, a ceiling fan would work better than fixing the air conditioner.
Nevertheless, we would happily go back. -

We absolutely loved Hale Lokelani. The house was nicely furnished and well stocked. It was just as described. Best of all was the lagoon just down the back steps. The beds in the house really need an upgrade. The furniture is pretty beat up too. The airconditioner in the bedroom is shot and as we've been there twice it gets super hot. Great location on the water, excellent house, good supply of various things in the kitchen, close to latest lava sites and other interesting places.

Only caveats: neighboring houses are close by, were not occupied most of the time while we were there except except for gardeners and brifly by anothe couple - may not seem so "away from it all" if they were occupied. The bedroom has poor circulation and gets pretty warm, could use a ceiling fan, or a floor fan to improve circulation - fan that was there was too noisy to use.

We were a little apprehensive when we first arrived; the location is very remote and their was a Gecko and roach welcoming committee (outside the house - not inside). But after a good nights sleep and waking to the beautiful sounds of the ocean, and then walking out on to the deck to the beautiful, private secluded warm cove all concerns disappeared. We spent 3 days laying on our private deck swimming with the turtles, fish and yes, non biting sharks! The water is very warm from the hot fresh water entering in from the volcano and the neighborhood is friendly and just a joy to walk through and enjoy the beauty at every turn.
The house is very comfortable with all you will need to enjoy your stay, it is remote for a reason - you wanted to get away right? The gated entry keeps "tourists out and this is really a good location for seeing the lava flow down the road. Be sure to stop in at Kaleo's in Pahoa - awesome food - and Jeff at the surf shop can set you up with snorkel gear.
The house kitchen and cabinets as well as the bathroom need updating and the beds are certainly not the Ritz but all in all we would stay here again and the property managers went out of their way to make sure we were happy with our stay.
Also just be aware that the bedrooms downstairs are completely separate from the upstairs and require walking outside and downstairs to get to them- My teenage boys actually loved the privacy. -

We knew it was going to be wonderful to stay at Kapoho, but did not expect to find ourselves enjoying such a beautiful home. The house is so charming and beautiful with all the wood....parkay floors, wood counters....and had everything we needed from cooking utensils and dishes to beach towels and snorkeling gear. We loved being here and will definitely come back if and when we are blessed to return to the Big Island one day.
The house was very clean and welcoming.
We did have a little difficulty getting the entrance gate to work....but that may have been because we are not accustomed to using such devices. -

It was a lovely spot and a great house. There were many thoughtful additions - the straw hats for example. Our only disappointment was with the downstairs bedrooms - there was not a double bed but rather two singles in the front room and the kitchen did not have a kettle (we are all tea drinkers) so those downstairs had to come up whenever they wanted a cup of tea. But as I say, the rest was so lovely that these disappointments did not matter too much.

Hale Lokelani was a beautiful house in a totally unspoilt region of the Big Island. We had read the reviews but never thought it could be as good as it sounded. However it went beyond our expectations. The house really did have easy access into a beautiful private warm lagoon where the turtles came swimming with us every day. The house was beautifully appointed and the kitchen better equipped than any rental property we have ever been in, including our own weekender! Even down to lots of recipe books for those who really want to cook. And believe us once you arrive here you won't want to go far afield. But it was an easy trip to see the Volcano National Park and lava flowing into the Ocean at night. The house had a guest book and printed material which helped us explore some more local sights (which were not to be found in the general tourist guides). We have 4 children aged 15 to 7 and they all loved it. Our only regret....that we couldn't have stayed longer!

The supurb location makes up for the property being a little run down and dated. There is a long flight of stairs up to the main living level, which is very spacious, open and pleasant. The kitchen is far better equipt than most rentals. The master bedroom has poor natural ventilation but there is an air conditioner for that room only. Views from front and back decks are breathtaking. Swimming in the ocean inlet has good access (stairs) from ther property...that's a rarity in this region. Sea turtles frequent the inlet and you can see them while swimming and even from the deck.

All amenities were great upstairs. Downstairs was quaint and comfortable. The views are phenomenal from the property. We have been very pleased with all bookings through Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals' Kapoho and have returned three of the last four years. Mahalo, Tim Bradberry

We really loved the house, especially for its unique location. It was very quiet around there and we felt like living at the edge of the earth. The greatest was snorkelling in the lagoon right by the house. There was a huge sea turtle living there! We saw it many times and even saw its house!

San Jose, CA7 Idyllic days

It was my father's 75th birthday surprise organized by yours truly and I didn't quite know what to expect from Hale Lokelani based on the online specs. It turned out to be just perfect for our family of 4 adults. We spent hours in the tidewater pools, snorkeling with the turtles and fishes. On sunny days we were amazed how warm the water temperature got with the thermal vents acting as heaters. We even got my father to snorkel for the first time in his life and he loved it (after being really hesitant and trying all kinds of excuses to get out of it). We had great fun cooking local food and eating fresh fruits and coconuts that fell from the trees near the waterfront. The house had ample space and supplies of bath and kitchen supplies for all of us to be comfortable and the assortment of snorkeling gear was very useful. The neighborhood was very nice and walking around we saw all kinds of trees and birds and the sea views from the rock wall was great. The neighbor's had tidepools for backyards. We all had a wonderful time and would love to go back again. Do eat at Paolo's Bistro in Paho if you get a chance and listen to the Kaloli band in the Punatic Internet Cafe - they are very good.

Moses Lake, waGreat place to stay

This was my family's first trip to Hawaii, we wanted to experience both sides of the island. It is a bit of a drive from Kona, but well worth the effort. This is a very unique enviroment. It is a little cooler than the other side, but does not get as much rain as Hilo. The water was alway very warm thanks to Pele. The snorkeling was great and the back yard access to the water was unbelievable. We swam with huge sea turtles everyday. If you can rip yourself away it is a close walk to the Champange Pond, awsome swimming. Also very close to the Kapoho tide pools, accessed from Vacation Land, very cool snorkeling in very calm and protected waters. My 6 year old daughter was able to learn how to snorkel very easily. Also very easy access to the volcano park, and to the location of the current lava flow. I would recomend this place to anyone considering a trip to the other side of the island. Mahalo

Not having internet (wireless) available is very annoyiny in this day & age.
It was annoying that the water was cut off a few times but I realize that was not the management's fault.
There wasn't any dishwasher soap when we arrived but the cleaning woman was kind of enough to bring us some. The market didn't carry it either. Chair in bedroom near desk has broken arms, kitchen chairs have broken webbing.
Most other things were in good shape.
We do like the spot and overall it is a great rental. -

We had a great time here swimming with the turtles and enjoying the sites. The house was clean and the property managers responded very quickly both when making reservations and with questions we had once we were there. Thanks to everyone for helping make our vacation enjoyable and stressfree.

Alexandria, VAGreat place to get away from it all

Hawaii is remote--and this place is in one of the more remote corners of the island. And that's exactly what we were looking for on our honeymoon. Nearly surrounded by water, reasonably close to Volcano National Park, but away from any hustle and bustle. So big thumbs up on location. The house itself is in good shape--but the appliances were a wee bit old and (biggest issue), there was no water filter for the tap water--which was pretty gnarly tasting. But on the plus side, you can literally walk out the back door into water. Having a full kitchen is a big plus as well--it's a good 20 minute drive to any place to eat, so hit the grocery store in Pahoa before checking in.
