VirginiaFantastic little cottage
Left on 11/30/2012 for a stay in November 2012
My husband and I finally managed to pull together a vacation last minute, and this place was perfect. We prefer to not stay in hotels and large resorts areas; but much rather in small rentals so we can get away from touristy crowds. The cottage is very comfortable, brightly colored, and uncluttered. The area was very quiet and dark at night, with no street lights blaring thought the sliding glass doors in the bedroom. Every morning we enjoyed bringing our breakfast out onto the covered patio to read the paper, plan our day, and listen to the ocean. The cottage is withing walking distance to many of the tidal pools in the area, and nice drive to Hilo or the National Park.
The only complaint that my husband has was the non-stick flooring in the shower hurt his feet. We hope that we can get back to cottage before the entire area turns into the large, over the top houses. -

Yes we stayed in the cottage on Kapoho Beach and were charmed with our spot. The kitchen was well appointed and sparkling clean with fresh flowers on the table it was a cozy romantic hideaway. We would stay here again and hope to next year.

Sebastopol, CA, United StatesToo bad about construction next door : (
Left on 02/12/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Very charming sweet simple place, very near to one of the few swimming entrances into the Kapoho bay. We would have been extremely happy with the cottage and the location if it wasn’t for the giant new house going in right next store on the ocean side (with construction workers from 8am – 4pm every weekday and an intermittent loud tile saw). We were very thankful to be given a discount for the misfortune. This new house is so sad for this cottage, which I would hesitate to recommend because it is going to be much less of a serene place even once construction is done and the other house has vacation renters. We also had some trouble with a moldy smell through out the cottage, but every thing else about it was lovely!

Homer, AK, United StatesGreat Place to Stay near Champagne Pond
Left on 02/09/2012 for a stay in January 2012
My wife, 20 year old daughter and I had a wonderful time staying here. Everything was as described. Very clean, comfortable and welcoming. A 5 minute walk will bring you to all the access points to the ocean. (We actually prefer the snorkeling down the street at the tide pools but that is just us.) The only thing that was a slight downside was the workers doing construction next door. They start promptly at 8am and while the construction noise isn't bad, be prepared for a lot of "f-bombs" being freely tossed around in the course of their long distance conversations with each other. Aside from that, we had a wonderful stay in this lovely cottage.

The cottage had everything we needed for our three night stay in Kapoho. We were very comfortable and liked the proximity to swimming areas and the funky towns of Pahoa and Kalapana. The area was very safe and picking up the keys for the place was a breeze. We were even given a discount for the construction next door... thanks!

Left on 01/12/2012 for a stay in January 2012
The house is perfect for two people. You can see and hear the ocean from the covered deck. Very relaxing. A short walk to warm tide pools and a short drive to farmers market and black sand beach in Pahoa. Gated community. We loved the fresh lemons and bananas growing on the property. Washer and dryer were a big plus. Construction next door but looks like they should be wrapping up soon. Outdoor shower. Tiny little ants everywhere, but if you clean up after yourself they aren't too bothersome. The last night we were there the whole neighborhood lost power, but we really didn't miss it!!! Tara, in the office, was extremely helpful and courteous through out our stay. Definitely a great deal and would stay here again!!

Tahoma, WA, United StatesCute cottage, but several problems
Left on 12/18/2011 for a stay in December 2011
Cute cottage in a beautiful neighborhood with short walk to Champagne Pond. But we had annoying problems, something you don't want to deal with while on vacation! The WiFi had to be reset (after several phone calls), the bed spread was torn in two places, the toaster was broken, one skillet was disgusting and unusable, and the construction next door started at 8 am each day. Even when the new home is completed, the view from the cottage is very compromised compared to past years. This little place isn't on the water, doesn't have a flat screen TV or a dishwasher, and now there's a new 2-story home about 30 feet from the bedroom window! It's still a cute place, but the rent needs to come down given these shortfalls.

Left on 12/04/2011 for a stay in November 2011
The cottage is quite comfortable and it was clean. It's an older property and was charmingly funky. Great for 2 people but 3 would be a crowd. The only drawback is the construction right next door during the day and the new house has pretty much removed the view entirely. Kopoho is a lovely quiet little community and everyone is very friendly and helpful. I think I would stay here again.

Duvall, WAGreat location--don't miss Champagne Pond!
Left on 11/09/2011 for a stay in October 2011
Overall the cottage was a wonderful place to base the Hilo side of our vacation. I recommend getting there in daylight, we did the journey in the dark and it was tricky at best!
Champagne Pond is amazing once you figure out how to access it (you need to swim in from the access point or walk across a lava field).
Definitely recommend going to Costco on the Kona side before you get here as grocery options are limited and expensive.
The bathroom/shower unit was a bit cramped, but we made it work. The laundry is on the outside and seems like new.
The view is obstructed by the construction, but we found the crew to be very friendly and they don't work on Saturday or Sunday. Enjoy! -

I was very happy with the cottage in general and had a delightful few days. However was disappointed by the view that has been blockedby the. Sw construction. It was not pictured do on the website. Still that I could get around.
The problem I had was that the nice quiet weekend when I arrived was not so again once the construction crew returned on Monday. The language of these folks was terrible! And of course people coming & going right on the deck side of the cottage. Hard to avoid without having to
Leave the property each day. I left early and your agent was most sympathetic offering a discount on my stay and a partial refund. I really appreciate that. She did mention I should have asked to move and I would next time. The cottage itself could use a few upgrades like taking out carpet and using a few throw rugs
And the bathroom could use an upgrade but overall a nice little place well equipped kitchen and everything one could use. I would book with you company again for sure. And I did like the area in general . Would Likely stay on the big island again and also your Maui properties as well. ThanksResponse from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 10/31/2011

Nice little cottage centrally located near Champagne Pond. The only unfortunate aspect is that the oceanside neighbors are building a large two story house and carport that will definately obsure some of the view from cottage. Next visit we would probably look into Vacationland since it is adjacent to the Tide Pools which offer better snorkeling. Does your company offer any properties there?

Left on 05/26/2011 for a stay in May 2011
We had such a wonderful stay at the cottage! We absolutely would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to visit the Puna area. We had amazing adventures every day exploring all the local tide pools, swimming areas, markets, and Volcanoes National Park. We woke up every morning to the sound of the ocean, the fragrance of plumeria- surrounded by palm trees, banana trees and papaya trees. Every night, dinner on the deck looking at the ocean, and falling asleep to the sound of coqui frogs and geckkos. Fabulous, fragrant night walks as well.
The snorkelling is great! We swam and snorkelled everyday with our five-year-old daughter. There were safe, gentle areas for all of us to swim (she, with her life jacket). The beach access is great- something we found was difficult in much of Big Island.
We loved our stay at the cottage so much! Certainly, it was the highlight of our trip. Great location, beautiful time. We hope to come back again!
The only thing we disliked were the ants...everywhere! You certainly have to be diligent about wiping up and putting all your food in the fridge immediately. That being said- it was way less buggy than any cottage I have ever been to in Canada. Certainly, way less mosquitos!
The cottage had a great 1960's holiday feel that we adored as well. There was music on, and beautiful flowers from the garden when we arrived- as well as a very thorough information booklet that we found very helpful.
Thank-you for a wonderful, wonderful stay. Mahalo! -

Bellingham, WA5th trip to Kapoho
Left on 11/18/2010 for a stay in November 2010
We loved this little cottage and have always loved coming to Kapoho (10 years now) but we noticed some negative changes that have happened and personally were impacted by this. We had our car parked at the cottage and were either out for a walk or swim. The car was unlocked and I had left our binoculars in the middle compartment of the car and some lotion I had bought in the glove box. It wasn't until the next day that we could not find them and it took awhile before we realized that someone had prowled the car while it was at the cottage and taken those things. This put a huge damper effect on the rest of our trip and we realized that Kapoho was no longer the sweet local place that we had come to love.

We are saddened by the recent prowling in Kapoho as well. As we state in our Welcome Letter, there have over the years been a few thefts from our guests. It is very important to lock up your car and the property when you're not around. This is such a sad state of affairs, but if followed, this practice will help keep your vacation a light and enjoyable one. Kapoho is still one of the most magical places I've ever been! My husband and I truely loved our weekend getaway at The Cottage, it was everything we hoped it to be, quiet, clean, right on the water, simple beauty. We appreciated the fresh fruits and flowers, the Hawaiian music when we walked in. It wasn't pretentious yet there were many thoughtful details such as the first aid kit and emergency flashlights, condiments in the kitchen, beach towels and a cooler. The location was perfect, just as advertised, just a few yards from the water and around the corner from Champagne pond. The neighbors, both visitors and resident's were all friendly. Mahalo for sharing this piece of paradise with us.

Everything was wonderful. We enjoyed the various shore accesses. We especially enjoyed the Champagne Pond. Pahoa was close enough to be able to eat out-a must for visitors would be Village Cafe in Pahoa-great burgers. We would definitely stay here again. Sure beats a hotel.
Only complaint was the itty bitty ants-they got into everything-especially the dirty clothes. We did not leave any food out for them to get into so I guess they had to find something else to get into. Missed having a dryer-had to go to a laudromat to dry the clothes the ants got into. -

Very, very nice property (very clean).
Would strongly suggest a clothes dryer be installed next to the clothes washer inside the cottage. The property did have a clothes line outside under the roofed porch but given the very high amount of humidity in the air (rain showers, etc) any washed clothes will (and did) NOT dry overnight outside (had to bring them inside and leave underneath the dining table ceiling fan running all night to dry out). -

We very much enjoyed our stay of 10 nights at the Kapoho Cottage and highly recommend it to a couple or small family. Two minor glitches: First the information provided about several items in the welcome binder was old and innaccurate; it should be reviewed and updated. Second, the bathroom has a first aid kit on prominent display, but when I went to use it for a minor emergency, there was nothing in it but a very few band-aids. I recommend that the kit be checked and stocked on a regular basis.
other than that, everything was A+ -

We loved, loved, loved our stay at The Cottage! It's in a friendly, clean gated community and a short walk away from Champagne Pond. Plus, the fantastic snorkeling at Kapoho tidepools is a 5 minute drive away. The cottage is small, but adorable with a tropical color scheme and island-themed furnishings. Note that there is no dishwasher or dryer... I don't mind hanging my clothes on the clothesline but the air is so moist that they don't dry very well. If our stay was longer than three nights, this could have been a problem when we ran out of clean clothes. We ate out in a romantic little Italian restaurant in town (Pahoa) on our last night called Paolo's. We highly recommend it, and we're quite picky since my husband used to be a waiter in a high-end restaurant. They do not have a liquor license, so bring your own wine and they're happy to serve it for you for a nominal ($5) corkage fee. We will definitely be back again, both to The Cottage and to Paolo's!

Loads of trees and flowers all around helped birds flutter and sing their praises! There was even a little arbor of trees that made a canopy cover. Easy walk to Champagne Pond and University Pond for swimming. The Cottage was a comfortable abode to spend a few days or even a week or two, although access to markets is a little far. Friendly neighbors and staff helped us aclimate to our surroundings. We ate breakfast one morning out on the veranda with a partial view of the ocean. I saw a Northern Cardinal up in a tree, gecko on the outside wall, mongooses sprinting across the roads. The queen-sized bed was nice and comfortable, and in the kitchen we found everything available for our needs. No dryer to accompany the washing machine, but a clothesline under the patio roof dries the clothes in an hour or two. Lots of fans helped keep down the heat. All in all, we had a wonderful time even though it was short.

This was a nice spacious cottage with good facilities and the housekeeper and owner seemed friendly. It is within a minute of the ocean, in fact you can see the sea from the lanai. You are also within a few minutes walk of a volcanically heated warm pond (Champagne pond) and there are other ponds and snorkelling areas nearby. There are some restaurants in Pahoa, and you are a short drive from the lava flow ocean entry (for now). Negatives were that we didn't find the actual community to have a very friendly feel, unlike most of the Big Island. There were Kapu, Keep Out, Private signs and large fences wherever you looked. In addition there were a lot of ants around the property so you have to be scrupulously clean to avoid being overrun by them. The week we were there it rained constantly but obviously this is down to luck! We found it a nice place to relax, read books, and explore the local sights. If you want to see this area and don't mind the ants I'd recommend the cottage; however if we returned to the Island we would probably miss this region around Pahoa altogether as it seemed less friendly than other parts.
