Description from the manager
Hula Cove is one of those sweet old cottages built many years ago specifically as a beach house. It has the true vintage feel of a simpler time with the modern amenities of today. Hula Cove has a large living/bedroom area, kitchen, and full bath
with shower. A broad outdoor lanai across the entire front of the house practically sits right on top of the sparkling clear tide pools.
Wake up to that fabulous view of the famous Waiopae ponds! Hula Cove is the last house at the end of the tide pools that attract visitors to this area. Down the road others are parking their cars after their drive to Kapoho, hauling their snorkel gear

Everything was perfect except for the rain, but even that was tolerable in the lovely hula cove. My husband and I and our three year old enjoyed a fabulous three days at the must stay hula cove. Best snorkeling ever, and I 've done a bunch, beautiful space, kitchen with all your needs, and extra bonuses like snorkeling gear and beach towels.

Home, WA, United StatesEven better than expected
Left on 04/09/2012 for a stay in April 2012
This property has even more amenities than listed - it is a perfect spot for a couple to stay and noticed it could even accommodate a couple of small children too (extra bedding and cushions, could seat 4 at the outdoor table, SUPER mellow and safe swimming right in eyeshot of the lanai.) Only thing to know is that a public access 'trail' ends right at this property and its seemingly private tide pool, so expect a few locals and visitors throughout the day (until 7pm.) We had no problems with this, but some previous guests mentioned it in the guest book. Never saw or heard a neighbor, so we felt like we had the spot to ourselves aside from an a=occasional drop in snorkeler. Already planning our next visit - trying to stay for 4 days next time!

Left on 03/19/2012 for a stay in March 2012
Hula Cove felt like home immediately! We were so sad to leave and are already talking about going back. The cottage had everything we needed including bikes and snorkeling gear (and a full size washer and dryer!). The cottage is private yet feels very safe and secure. We loved the off-street parking. Vistors sharing our tide pool were all very well-behaved. Snorkeling was a dream but all you have to do is look over the railing to see lots of beautiful tropical fish! Fell asleep to the sounds of breakers, birds and frogs and have never slept so well! Took day trips all over the island but next time think we will just fly into Hilo, rent a car, stock up on groceries and "hang loose" on the deck until it's time to leave! "Mahalo" for our wonderful stay!

Left on 03/06/2012 for a stay in February 2012
Very nice little cottage located right on the Kapoho tide pools. You can snorkel right off your back porch in calm safe waters and see many kinds of tropical fish.
The cottage was very clean and had just about everything we needed to cook. We had a fabulous time exploring the surrounding area and found some very beautiful scenic areas. We liked the location very much but would think some people may think it is too far from town. We on the other hand like to get out and away from town. Weekdays do tend to be much quieter as many people come to swim on the weekends. My husband and I spent 8 days here and had no problems with safety. Yes you should always exercise normal caution and keep things locked up but you should always do that anywhere you go that is a vacation destination.
Unfortunately it rained for the majority of our visit but that just gave us a chance to catch up on our reading and napping. Great place to unwind, visit Volcanoes National Park or shop in Hilo and Pahoa.
Hilo Farmers market every other Sunday and Wednesdays is cool and another farmers market every Sunday just north of Pahoa on Rt. 130. We had fun talking to all the locals and just exploring.
The only con I ran into was the Coqui frogs! One night I just could not sleep...because they peep! peep! peep!
Would I stay here again? Yes and maybe bring a pill for that one sleepless night. -

Left on 01/16/2012 for a stay in December 2011
We found the cottage to be such a nice place to come "home" to after our daily excursions. We also enjoyed just relaxing on the lanai and snorkeling steps from the back door. The water was amazingly clear and the fish very plentiful. We even enjoyed the chorus of the frogs every night. We were pleasantly surprised to find the cottage overstocked with lots of extra items left by previous guests for everyone to share - sunscreen, condiments, teas, coffee, rice, etc. This was the first time we have ever rented our own private place and it was a great experience!

Our secnd time here, was even a greater experience this time. Met Frank (local professional snorkeling guide)who escorted us out through the various pools out to near the breaking surf where the greatest wonders of coral, fish, turtles and sea urchins were observed. Coupled with great dining prepared from various fresh fish purchased at the fish market in Hilo and local fruit from the open market, our stay was truly paradise.

Left on 10/07/2011 for a stay in October 2011
We had a great time and we will be back next year. A few suggestions:
The out building were the dryer/washer is very dirty especially with animal feces everywhere.
A floor fan to circulate hot air in the house.
However again we had a wonderful time and we will reserve the Hula Cove house for next year.

Bainbridge Island, WashingtonA Vacation Paradise
Left on 08/26/2011 for a stay in July 2011
Hula Cove is like our dream vacation! Everything was perfect, from the Hawaiian music playing softly as we opened the door, the bouquet of flowers, the clean and beautifully furnished cottage, and the lovely tidepools just outside the door. The room itself had everything we could want for a restful stay - good screens on every window, comfy bed, great toiletries in the bathroom, fridge stocked with coffee beans, rice, condiments, a BBQ, and a fully functional and well-stocked kitchen. Also lots of beach towels, snorkeling gear, rock shoes of every size, bicycles for exploring. Hula Cove provided the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we've ever had! We were so enthralled with the beauty of the underwater world just outside the door that we went in two and three times each day to lazily explore the cove at different tide levels.
Hula Cove is the perfect getaway - it was all we hoped for and more. -
Lake Oswego, ORBeautiful spot
Left on 07/05/2011 for a stay in June 2011
This home is quite cute, comfortable and well-equipped. Being able to look down on the water from the lanai and see all the fish was delightful. Also, we loved finding the bikes for us to use. Future guests should be aware, though, that this is not a "secluded" spot. A trail from the street opens out just to the right of the cottage, and it is frequently used by people who spread out along the rocks on the opposite side and swim in the pools in front of the property. There was some noise associated with this use, and we also experienced two rather noisy groups in the house alongside--numerous young people one day/night and a group of children another afternoon. Although well-screened with foliage, that house is fairly close by. Also, be prepared for lots of frog noise at night.
Aside from that, we had fun staying here and would come back again. It's an interesting part of the Big Island and there wasn't any VOG. -

Left on 06/07/2011 for a stay in May 2011
This beach house is so charming and the location is fantastic if you are a nature lover who likes to get in the water and check out the wildlife! The house is tucked away in a sweet little cove right on the water- so keep in mind the locals and other vacationers also find this cove appealing and you may be sharing the space with beach-going families, young kids included, and some groups with radios. Depending on the timing you could have this cove almost to yourself, or be sharing it with a partying group. The Puna area is one of my favorite areas of the island with its lush vegetation, relative remoteness from masses of people, and the snorkeling. Keep in mind this is not a sandy beach area at all- it is all lava rock so if you are looking for sand, this is not the place.

The house was very nice and it's in a beautiful location. Some reviewers complained about the noisy frogs, but I thought they were great. I slept great.
The only negative thing I have to say is that there were quite a few bugs in the place when we arrived. My wife wasn't pleased. After I killed them all the first night, there wasn't any problem. Possibly someone had left a door or window opened before we arrived?
We will definitely consider returning. -

We had the best time at Hula Cove. It is a snorkel paradise! You do not even need to get in the water to see all the beautiful fish that is right in your backyard! We even saw an Octopus and an eel one morning as we were looking down into the water. Hula Cove was also a nice central location to explore that side of the Big Island.

We stayed for 3 nights at Hula Cove and we couldn't have been happier. The location is to die for! The place is totally cute. We never even left! I really appreciated that the property managers left the kitchen stocked!!It is so nice not to have to worry about stuff like condiments and sugar when you travel. It is a perfect spot for a couple to come and relax! This was the nicest place we've stayed on this side of the island so far.

We wish we knew this before we stayed here... The property and the location is stunning however after noticing a 'film' in the lava pools right in front of the property I did some investigating on the internet. The film is fresh water mixing with salt water but the water is not so 'fresh' it seems there is a problem with raw sewage leaking from cesspools from the community and entering the lava pools. I was appalled that the management or owners would not even give a warning to the guests as tests have been done showing elevated levels of bacteria caused by fecal matter. Check it out yourself and Google "Kapoho Tide Pools Sewage". In my opinion this is a lawsuit waiting to happen as anyone with a cut is at risk of infection not to mention the disgusting factor. If you do go we suggest snorkeling at high tide and walk along the lava to the outer pools where the snorkeling is better anyway, advice the owners should be mentioning in their welcome booklet at the house!! It is a shame that the community and regional officials have ignored this issue for the last 15 years (they have know about it for that long!) as this is one of the most beautiful locations on the island.

Westville, OkHello Hula Cove!
Left on 01/10/2011 for a stay in December 2010
We rented this property with the hopes that it would be off the beaten path and in the middle of nowhere. It was exactly that. We were about 30 minutes from groceries and supplies in Pahoa. We loved the snorkling right out the back door. Everthing was super clean although we never saw any people that maintained the property until the day we were leaving. I beleive they had been on vacation themselves. This property is very nice if you plan on seeing the volcano, snorkling and hiking. We also drove to Hawi and did a zipline with Eco Tours. We went on a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian. Everything was within driving distance even when we went to Kona (about a 2 1/2 hour drive). We loved this property and it's secluded feel. We enjoyed everything that was offered and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get away to a place that is out of the way of the rush of things. The guest book that everyone contributes to was one of our favorite things. If you go to this property you will never forget it as it allows you to relax in a way you never thought possible.

Hula Cove is definitely one of God's most beautiful creations. My husband & I were looking for a place to try our hand at snorkeling, go sightseeing, and spend time relaxing by the ocean. The different varieties of fish were amazing, the sound of the surf and the various night calls of the birds & frogs was peaceful. This was definitely a piece of paradise. Teri, the housekeeper, did a wonderful job at having the place ready for our stay & made us feel at home. We had such a wonderful time & hope to go back to Hula Cove again in the future. We would highly recommend Hula Cove to anyone who is fortunate enough to make a trip to the Big Island.

Hula Cove was a great place to stay. My favorite things were:
-the proximity to the tidepool, I could just sit on the lanai and watch the fish swimming.
-a well-appointed kitchen, including a coffee machine and grinder
-washer and dryer - having those was just awesome
only thing negative about the location was it took a little while to get back out to the highway to explore other parts of the island, but it's worth it to be on the water. And some of the kitchen stuff was a little worse for the wear, particularly the knives. -

I stayed alone in the house, for one week at the end of May 2009, and I loved it. I came for some appointments in the Puna area, and also had to work. While the house is tiny and really only for couples or single travellers, it is perfect and seems like heaven. I got there late at night in pouring rain, and did not see anything of the property or area. I was stunned the next morning when I saw where I was! You literally fall out of bed and can walk into your "own" little pool, that is connected to the open ocean, after some swimming around the rocks. From the deck behind the house, you can see and hear the ocean which I really appreciated. I especially liked falling asleep with the sound of the ocean. I will certainly come back.

Lost in Paridise, a wonderful spot to get away from the madening crowds of tourists that flock to the Resort side of the Island of Hawai'i. A quiet comfortable hawaiian holiday cabin tucked away at the end of a tide pool that offers hours of relaxation and that laid back feeling of lost in another year/another place. We were fortunate with mother nature and only had rain for 3 hours during one night that brought out the geckos and frogs to serenade for the rest of the night. Wonderful simply wonderful.
