      Sunrise House Fantastic Escape

Left on 04/17/2012 for a stay in April 2012

We expected an escape to a beautiful oceanfront spot remote from the usual hotel experience. The beauty, uniqueness, and creature comforts of the Sunrise House exceeded our high expectations. The views thru the large picture windows and sliding door appear on the website, and are even nice in person. Being able to take a few steps and swim in a small private lagoon with humus, take an outdoor shower, is a rare treat. The living room contains nice tv with satellite, the kitchen has all one needs. An outdoor grill is there if one wants. Nice venting in the house keeps it cool and the sounds of the wind, occasional rain, and nightlife (frogs mostly) make it a really fun rural Hawaii experience. We really liked the extreme ease of getting the gate pass and keys. The owners obviously take pride in their place. Highly recommended.

      A Wonderful Experience

Left on 03/28/2012 for a stay in March 2012

The Sunrise House is in a perfect location, with spectacular views of the ocean and sunrises, and a great breeze. The property was clean and had lots of little extras at the house that made our stay easy. The instructions for checking in were clear and easy to follow, and checking in and out were seamless processes - beats staying at a hotel any time!!

      Very Relaxing!

Left on 03/22/2012 for a stay in March 2012

The Sunrise house is AMAZING! Loved every second of being there... there was so much beauty, peace and nature. I hate Cane spiders and Cockroaches, but this place just made me even love those while there. It rained hard the whole time we were there, but the morning we left, the sun decided to come out and so did all the beautiful snails, frogs and slugs... ones we would never see back home in Los Angeles. My grandmother owned the Sunrise House about 20 years ago and I brought a lot of pictures back for her. She misses Kapoho a lot and informed me that she would like to come to Sunrise house next year :) It was such a lovely stay! Oh and I must must must add, the home was incredible clean and the lagoon crisp and clear. I read reviews where people complained of dirt in the house and muck in the lagoon... that was definitely not the case. The second I walked in the house I was amazed at the upkeep. The fresh flowers were such a nice touch too! Thank you!

      True Hawaii Style Living

Left on 03/07/2012 for a stay in March 2012

I might be a little biased to this house as it was one my grandmother owned 20 years ago. We never lived in it, just rented it out to others, but we did live in a house just down the road near the Champagne Pond. I came back to Kapoho because I missed it so much and wanted to spend my honeymoon there and show my new husband where my fondest memories as a child were. While trying to book any Kapoho rental, all were taken up during our honeymoon dates. I checked back one day and saw the Sunrise House opened up for the exact dates of our honeymoon. It was amazing and a blessing to be able to vacation at a house my family used to own. Taking all that aside, this house is still just as amazing. It really errks me to see these reviews where people are complaining the lagoon isn't clean, or the house isn't very clean. I went there thinking the lagoon would be mucky and the floors would be sandy and dirty. (first off, the lagoon needs to be kept in a natural ecological condition... how it looks is the way it should look). All I can say now is, if these people are complaining about the tiniest speck of dirt, then these people should not be vacationing in Kapoho. The house is in excellent shape for the amount of rain and saltwater crashing up on the house constantly... I could barely tell this was a Kapoho House.. having a house that close to crashing waves is constant upkeep and maintenance, and the owners here have done that.. the house is a Hawaiian haven. Kapoho is a very natural area, it is important that things be kept in their natural state... While I lived in Kapoho, we caught all of our own food and all the homes were 90% owned by locals. Stores are miles away, resorts are miles away, cell phone and wifi signal are miles away. Please keep this in mind, my husband was feeling a little distant from civilization at times, which is why I love Kapoho. The only sad thing I can say is the lagoon is filled with tropical fish and eel and 20 years ago, these were all naturally fed by food brought in from high tide. As soon as I got to the lagoon steps the fish came swarming over to me waiting for me to feed them. It seems to me the fish have been human fed for several years now, only to become dependent on it now. As that happens, the fish and eel will become more aggressive towards humans, so please beware, do not snorkel in the lagoon while feeding the fish. You are completely safe snorkeling in the lagoon, just not with food in your hands. I will always come back to visit the Sunrise House. its the most peaceful place in the world. If you are a late-nighter, take a seat above the lagoon and watch high tide trickle in and the lagoon start to swell. After it rains, all the beautiful tropical slugs, geckos, gigantic snails with beautiful shells, and singing frogs will start to come out... Nature couldn't be any more beautiful! P.S. the house looks just as the photos show.. I just returned from the house last night so my memory is on-point.

      A little corner of paradise

Left on 12/28/2011 for a stay in November 2011

We arrived in the rain at night after a long journey from Toronto and fell in love as the sun rose over the ocean in the morning. A charming cottage with all the amenities set in a little corner of paradise. Our 3 year old enjoyed feeding the tropical fish in the private pool and swam around in his life jacket. My husband and I did a bit of snorkelling too.

It's about an hour outside of Volcanoes National Park where we spent several days hiking and learning about Hawaiin nature. The drive south along the coast has a number of beautiful state parks. We picked one day to drive over to the desert side of the Big Island but decided we liked the pace of the east coast better.

I wish it were closer !

Not every vacation rental will be a state-of-the-art upgraded home. The photos online and detailed description of home are an accurate representation of the home and the price is commensurate with the accommodations. Unfortunately, we have no control over the weather and would have appreciated hearing from the guest about the leaks as they occured that they could have been attended to. :) Hawaii Holiday Management

      A little piece of Paradise

Left on 11/10/2011 for a stay in November 2011

We arrived in the rain after dark. We loved Sunrise house from the moment the sky began to brighten and we could see where we were. We came to Hawaii for the volcanoes and visited the park four times but were completely captivated by the waves at our doorstep and the tidal/swimming pool with tropical fish and lovely swimming.
The house had a lovely cottage feel and was perfect for us and our 3 year old. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to prepare tasty meals ranging from hawaiian steaks on the BBQ to fresh fish (although our deep sea fishing trip was a bust).
If we ever get back to Hawaii we'll be staying at Sunrise House.

      great location, "quiet" secluded.

Left on 10/21/2011 for a stay in October 2011

We wanted oceanfront, swimming out front, close to tide pools, and not too expensive. We found it at the Sunrise Home. Great place, great price, fun (high tide only) pool out front, and watching the watching the waves crashing against the rocks was so soothing. The house was as clean as you can expect from a simple ocean front rental in the tropics. A little damp feeling at first, but once we settled in the house became our home. The owners put a table outside for dining and nice furniture inside to relax in. We really enjoyed our stay.

      It's all about the view!

Left on 10/04/2011 for a stay in October 2011

Had a wonderful time at Sunrise House!! The view of Kapoho Bay is AMAZING and worth every penny. The private lagoon is HEAVEN and we really enjoyed swimming in our very own saltwater "fish tank" and immensely enjoyed watching and feeding the fish every morning after sunrise and high tide. There are even crabs that march along the sea wall! The outdoor shower is a big plus. We LOVED the new teak lounge chairs and outside dining table that were just added. The home itself was older but comfortable...just right for two single people or two couples. The living room furniture was also comfortable and we enjoyed having DishNetwork television at night. There are a couple of security issues, but this is not unusual for the Kapoho/Puna area on the Big Island. Just be smart and keep things locked up at night and there shouldn't be a problem. Overall, we had a very relaxing vacation at Sunrise House and the gorgeous scenery and falling asleep to ocean waves and Coqui frogs was just what we needed.

      Kapoho vacation 4/9-4/16/11

Left on 05/03/2011 for a stay in April 2011

Those in search of extravagant accommodations and concierge service should go to the Kona side. No waving palms and sandy beaches here. Nor are there luaus or beach parties or floor shows. No crowds, either. The house is 50 years old but has been well cared for. We wanted for nothing except more time to enjoy dramatic sunrises, daily rain showers, mongooses (proper name for more than one mongoose), and dozens of tropical fish in our own private "tide pool". Instead of sandy beaches we had crashing waves. Instead of wild parties and a stream of exotic restaurants, we had books, the volcano park, the gorgeous botanical garden in the seaside gorge north of Hilo, breathtaking Akaka Falls (440'), floating in the tide pool among the tropical fish, and simple home cooked meals (I.e., beer and sandwiches). All for the price of a bare hotel room in the middle of a crowded resort. Highly recommended for those wanting to really get away.

      Run Down

Left on 03/21/2011 for a stay in March 2011

We knew we were getting a small, older house and that was no problem. We were so excited to arrive and were telling everyone about it. But there was a bit of a shock when we got there. It's not just outdated, but actually rundown and dirty. We cleaned the microwave and fridge before we even used them. The freezer stunk badly so I cleaned that out, threw out all the food in there and bought a new baking soda box. We also bought all the cleaning supplies we used. The floors made your socks filthy. There were minor broken things all over the house. It needed a paint job badly, the ceilings were all peeling and all metal spots were rusting (more than normal "at the beach" stuff - it was obvious nothing had been done in years). None of the regular doors or screen doors closed tight which allowed the cockroaches to come in. We held out for four days but finally had to leave. We just were not comfortable with the place, knowing how much dirt we could see, what was it we weren't seeing? Like the bed and bedding?? When we left early the realty company never even bothered to ask us why. Although, before we arrived, they were extremely helpful.

It was our third trip to the Big Island. Still, we orginally planned to do more sightseeing than we did, but my wife and I found it hard to leave Sunrise House and its lagoon. We spent most of week right there on the property. We did set the alarm for 5:45 AM every morning to get up and watch the sunrise.

We had a wonderful time. The fish in our private tide pool were so colorful. The view was breath taking...I had to watch the sunrise every morning. The only negative thing was their were a lot of tiny ants and they were having issues with break ins at the rental house so we were a little nervous but we had no issues :)

We could not have been happier with Sunrise House. It met our expectations for a quiet cozy get away vacation. We loved the wonderful view of Kapoho Bay and the fish in the tide pool. We had lots of privacy and all the kitchen tools that you could possibly need. It was fun to read the guest house books where previous renters write about their stay to learn that Sunrise house was originally a fishing shack. Well that just adds to our little fishing shack get away. We barely went anywhere outside the Puna District during our stay. We hope to return again to explore more of the island.

This was a fabulous rental, we loved eveything about it from the simple arrival procedures through to the amazing views, comfortable accomodation and the children adored the tidal pool. We did miss not having an outside dining area and table and some of the crockery was chipped and could be updated but these are minor niggles and definately do not detract from the place. We would definately love to return some day as this place is just so special.

The house itself is lovely. I was not familiar with the area and I felt a bit unsafe there after seeing nearby properties with many security signs and razor wire fences. I also think the tidal pool wall should be opened so fish can go out. To me, there seemed to be too many fish in that small pond. Property management was very responsive to questions I had.

Escape from the stress of the “real world”. Relax, unwind and rejuvenate your mind, spirit and soul at this special part of the world. We have always wanted to experience “old Hawaii”, and this is probably what it was like many years ago. You’ll love the privacy, along with the sounds of the surf, and the private tide pool in the back yard. The perfect place for that romantic get away. We watched the sunrise every morning and the moon rise at night. We were lucky enough to be there with a full moon also. Loved the feeling like no one was around, yet there were neighbors right next door. It is such a tranquil place.
Sunrise house had everything we needed. And the little touches, like the fresh flowers and the fruit that was there when we arrived. Mahalo to K.C. for leaving those little touches and making sure our accommodations were very clean when we arrived. It was also a great location on this side of the Big Island. Close to Champagne pond, Kapoho tide pools, Ahalanui warm pool, Issac Hale Beach Park, (where we took a great boat trip “Lava Ocean Adventures”), also Pohoiki warm pool all just a short drive away. Not to mention the great little town of Pohoa with some good places to eat there, with that warm Aloha spirit. Mahalo, for making available and sharing this little piece of paradise with us.
Next time we are on the Big Island we will definitely be staying at Sunrise House, just wish we could have had it for a longer stay. Next time will be longer.

FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, PLEASE READ BEFORE RENTING THE SUNRISE HALE

Left on 10/11/2009 for a stay in October 2009

I booked the Kapoho Sunrise Hale because I wanted direct swimming access to the ocean. I was excited about staying at the Sunrise Hale because there was direct access to a natural private tide pool directly on the property. However, when I arrived, I noticed that the natural tide pool was so filthy and full of invasive sea weed. When I spoke with the neighbors, I discovered that the wall was built illegally! Further, the wall that surrounds the tide pool blocks the majority of the ocean from entering the pool; preventing the ocean from naturally cleaning the pool during the change of tides. What remains is a stagnant pool of invasive sea weed, sad little fishes forever trapped in the pool with little food to eat, and the perfect spawning grounds for every type of flesh eating bacteria imagined. I'm writing this review for the safety of other visitors who stay at the Sunrise Hale.
DO NOT ENTER THE TIDE POOL AT THE SUNRISE HALE IN KAPOHO! If you absolutely must enter it, try not to disturb the sediment at the bottom of the pool, enter at high tide only, wear your shoes, and rinse off with soap immediately after exiting the pool. If you have an open wound, do not enter the pool.

Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 10/22/2009

      Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals

      Manager

We regret that this guest interpreted the naturally occurring seaweed in the oceanside tide pool of Sunrise House as "filthy and invasive". Healthy tide pools in and immediately adjacent to the ocean contain seaweed and a variety of other botanical and zoological life including small fish and eels, which to some are fascinating and interesting but to others are apparently uninviting. The sea wall surrounding the tide pool actually keeps out unnatural inorganic matter that would otherwise flow into the pool with extreme high tides and storms, such as fishing nets, floats, plastic bottles, and other assorted flotsam and jetsam that sadly floats on the currents of all our oceans, including the otherwise pristine Hawaiian Pacific Ocean. The guest was incorrect to state that the sea wall "blocks the majority of the ocean from entering the pool; preventing the ocean from naturally cleaning the pool during the change of tides." Apparently the guest did not realize that that the water level of the tide pool is always exactly at sea level, fluctuating twice a day with the tides, and that the entire Kapoho area is famous for its inland tide pools, many of which are hundreds of yards from the ocean yet flush cleanly twice a day with the incoming and outgoing tides. The tides penetrate the entire community just a few feet below the surface of the ground and are constantly moving in and out. Kapoho is situated on land so porous that the seawater flushes all these tide pools, not from the surface but from underneath the porous lava on which they are perched. The "flesh eating bacteria" comment reflects a very fanciful imagination. However, the guest was correct about one thing. We and all responsible property managers recommend that guests with open wounds avoid swimming not only in any of the Kapoho tide pools but also in Kapoho Bay and elsewhere in the ocean, and that guests always shower after swimming in non-chlorinated water.

Left on 09/13/2009 for a stay in August 2009

This house and its location is perfect for me. The foliage shields you from neighboring houses. The view of the ocean from the entire front of the house is spectacular. I'd wake early every morning (my body was on Eastern Time) and just sit and watch the waves come in and the black crabs scamper along the seawall. Truly peaceful. The house itself is airy (literally and figuratively) and of sufficient age to be comfortable (I like older homes). The tide pool was cold, not hot as expected, but fun for the family and nicely private. My only complaint is with kitchen ware (as usual). The kitchen needs a liquid measuring cup, preferably glass, and is in desperate need some microwavable cooking dishes. The blender was a bit tired, but so it goes with rental properties. Everything else was great. I could live there full-time, no problem. The Kapoho Beach Community was very nice to walk around. One word of warning for those who live in cities: if you don't like nighttime noises, you may not like the frogs that "sing" at night. It's louder than the peepers in vernal pools and way louder than the cicadas in August. The noise didn't bother me, but I read other reviews where people who were unaccustomed to natural sounds found it bothersome. Don't know whether the frogs are seasonal or year round.

Left on 06/14/2009 for a stay in May 2009

The location is quite nice and secluded, great view. HOWEVER, from the moment we arrived, the place was a literal furnace: the ceiling fans had been left on but made absolutely no difference; they were grossly inadequate to properly ventilate the heat that builds up as soon as the sun rises. By 6:30 each morning, the heat had started. We hurried through coffee & left, dreading our return in the evening. Very unfortunate, quite unacceptable. There needs to be much better heat ventilation - period.
Guests should be notified up front re: the din of frogs at night. This is no small issue: it is louder than the sound of the surf, and even penetrates earplugs.
From a cleanliness standpoint, the walls and ceilings need scrubbing or painting. Lots of food or dead bug splotches.

Loved the setting -- total privacy, (which can be rare in that area); great ocean action, but with the sea wall providing a protected space; entertaining sea life easily viewed, etc. The closest anything is about 8 miles in the town of Pahoa, which had some great restaurants & lots of local color (some of it quite scruffy). We had only one day of rain, & there were lots of good things to explore. The house itself could use a bit of tweaking. A king size bed would be nice, & the kitchen cabinets/shelving isn't very functional. There's also a weird situation with the washer/dryer back to back with access through two different rooms...., but in general it's a lovely setting and a comfortable place. I'd go back again:)
