Sunrise House Fantastic Escape
We expected an escape to a beautiful oceanfront spot remote from the usual hotel experience. The beauty, uniqueness, and creature comforts of the Sunrise House exceeded our high expectations. The views thru the large picture windows and sliding door appear on the website, and are even nice in person. Being able to take a few steps and swim in a small private lagoon with humus, take an outdoor shower, is a rare treat. The living room contains nice tv with satellite, the kitchen has all one needs. An outdoor grill is there if one wants. Nice venting in the house keeps it cool and the sounds of the wind, occasional rain, and nightlife (frogs mostly) make it a really fun rural Hawaii experience. We really liked the extreme ease of getting the gate pass and keys. The owners obviously take pride in their place. Highly recommended.

Wonder Sunrise and stardust. Sound of the waves pounding the rocks. Swimming with the fishes on the tidepool, This warm and cozy vacation house was perfect escape from daily routine. This is our second visit to the Big Island and we planning to be back !

A Wonderful Experience
The Sunrise House is in a perfect location, with spectacular views of the ocean and sunrises, and a great breeze. The property was clean and had lots of little extras at the house that made our stay easy. The instructions for checking in were clear and easy to follow, and checking in and out were seamless processes - beats staying at a hotel any time!!

The Sunrise house is AMAZING! Loved every second of being there... there was so much beauty, peace and nature. I hate Cane spiders and Cockroaches, but this place just made me even love those while there. It rained hard the whole time we were there, but the morning we left, the sun decided to come out and so did all the beautiful snails, frogs and slugs... ones we would never see back home in Los Angeles. My grandmother owned the Sunrise House about 20 years ago and I brought a lot of pictures back for her. She misses Kapoho a lot and informed me that she would like to come to Sunrise house next year :) It was such a lovely stay! Oh and I must must must add, the home was incredible clean and the lagoon crisp and clear. I read reviews where people complained of dirt in the house and muck in the lagoon... that was definitely not the case. The second I walked in the house I was amazed at the upkeep. The fresh flowers were such a nice touch too! Thank you!

Close to wonderful protected pools for snorkelling. Beautiful view!
True Hawaii Style Living
I might be a little biased to this house as it was one my grandmother owned 20 years ago. We never lived in it, just rented it out to others, but we did live in a house just down the road near the Champagne Pond. I came back to Kapoho because I missed it so much and wanted to spend my honeymoon there and show my new husband where my fondest memories as a child were. While trying to book any Kapoho rental, all were taken up during our honeymoon dates. I checked back one day and saw the Sunrise House opened up for the exact dates of our honeymoon. It was amazing and a blessing to be able to vacation at a house my family used to own. Taking all that aside, this house is still just as amazing. It really errks me to see these reviews where people are complaining the lagoon isn't clean, or the house isn't very clean. I went there thinking the lagoon would be mucky and the floors would be sandy and dirty. (first off, the lagoon needs to be kept in a natural ecological condition... how it looks is the way it should look). All I can say now is, if these people are complaining about the tiniest speck of dirt, then these people should not be vacationing in Kapoho. The house is in excellent shape for the amount of rain and saltwater crashing up on the house constantly... I could barely tell this was a Kapoho House.. having a house that close to crashing waves is constant upkeep and maintenance, and the owners here have done that.. the house is a Hawaiian haven. Kapoho is a very natural area, it is important that things be kept in their natural state... While I lived in Kapoho, we caught all of our own food and all the homes were 90% owned by locals. Stores are miles away, resorts are miles away, cell phone and wifi signal are miles away. Please keep this in mind, my husband was feeling a little distant from civilization at times, which is why I love Kapoho. The only sad thing I can say is the lagoon is filled with tropical fish and eel and 20 years ago, these were all naturally fed by food brought in from high tide. As soon as I got to the lagoon steps the fish came swarming over to me waiting for me to feed them. It seems to me the fish have been human fed for several years now, only to become dependent on it now. As that happens, the fish and eel will become more aggressive towards humans, so please beware, do not snorkel in the lagoon while feeding the fish. You are completely safe snorkeling in the lagoon, just not with food in your hands. I will always come back to visit the Sunrise House. its the most peaceful place in the world. If you are a late-nighter, take a seat above the lagoon and watch high tide trickle in and the lagoon start to swell. After it rains, all the beautiful tropical slugs, geckos, gigantic snails with beautiful shells, and singing frogs will start to come out... Nature couldn't be any more beautiful! P.S. the house looks just as the photos show.. I just returned from the house last night so my memory is on-point.

This was our fourth trip to the Big Island and by far the best vacation rental we have had there to date. We plan on renting Sunrise House again soon!
A little corner of paradise
We arrived in the rain at night after a long journey from Toronto and fell in love as the sun rose over the ocean in the morning. A charming cottage with all the amenities set in a little corner of paradise. Our 3 year old enjoyed feeding the tropical fish in the private pool and swam around in his life jacket. My husband and I did a bit of snorkelling too.
It's about an hour outside of Volcanoes National Park where we spent several days hiking and learning about Hawaiin nature. The drive south along the coast has a number of beautiful state parks. We picked one day to drive over to the desert side of the Big Island but decided we liked the pace of the east coast better.
I wish it were closer !

We loved Sunrise house. It was a beautiful setting.
Victoria, BC, Canada
The situation was beautiful. The house needs major upgrades, new kitchen, new bathroom, new bed! While we were there, there was a great deal of rain, some of which leaked in, more of which made the furniture damp.
Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 12/24/2011
Not every vacation rental will be a state-of-the-art upgraded home. The photos online and detailed description of home are an accurate representation of the home and the price is commensurate with the accommodations. Unfortunately, we have no control over the weather and would have appreciated hearing from the guest about the leaks as they occured that they could have been attended to. :) Hawaii Holiday Management

Outstanding as always, sunrise house does not disapoint
We have returned to the sunrise house over and over again so many times now I have lost count. Everything you need to relax, unwind, and enjoy the true Hawaii is here. The staff at Hawaii Holiday Vac Rentals are outstanding. Feels like coming home every time we return. We will be back again next year.

Sunrise House Hawaii
The property itself was lovely. It was very remote which we got used too.We stayed on 3 Hawaiian islands and had 3 very different experiances. I would recommend this property to others. The pond with all the tropical fish was great and the eel was friendly too. I would definately go back again.

A little piece of Paradise
We arrived in the rain after dark. We loved Sunrise house from the moment the sky began to brighten and we could see where we were. We came to Hawaii for the volcanoes and visited the park four times but were completely captivated by the waves at our doorstep and the tidal/swimming pool with tropical fish and lovely swimming.
The house had a lovely cottage feel and was perfect for us and our 3 year old. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to prepare tasty meals ranging from hawaiian steaks on the BBQ to fresh fish (although our deep sea fishing trip was a bust).
If we ever get back to Hawaii we'll be staying at Sunrise House.
great location, "quiet" secluded.
We wanted oceanfront, swimming out front, close to tide pools, and not too expensive. We found it at the Sunrise Home. Great place, great price, fun (high tide only) pool out front, and watching the watching the waves crashing against the rocks was so soothing. The house was as clean as you can expect from a simple ocean front rental in the tropics. A little damp feeling at first, but once we settled in the house became our home. The owners put a table outside for dining and nice furniture inside to relax in. We really enjoyed our stay.
It's all about the view!
Had a wonderful time at Sunrise House!! The view of Kapoho Bay is AMAZING and worth every penny. The private lagoon is HEAVEN and we really enjoyed swimming in our very own saltwater "fish tank" and immensely enjoyed watching and feeding the fish every morning after sunrise and high tide. There are even crabs that march along the sea wall! The outdoor shower is a big plus. We LOVED the new teak lounge chairs and outside dining table that were just added. The home itself was older but comfortable...just right for two single people or two couples. The living room furniture was also comfortable and we enjoyed having DishNetwork television at night. There are a couple of security issues, but this is not unusual for the Kapoho/Puna area on the Big Island. Just be smart and keep things locked up at night and there shouldn't be a problem. Overall, we had a very relaxing vacation at Sunrise House and the gorgeous scenery and falling asleep to ocean waves and Coqui frogs was just what we needed.
not good for cleaning condition
everythings are good but cleaning..
Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 10/08/2011
Thank you for your review. We personally inspected this property and did not find it unclean. It IS an older house and because of it's location directly oceanfront, it does get very worn out quickly! The owner is always upgrading it and the housekeeping staff does the best they can to keep up with the ravages of Nature. We assure you, the property is clean! Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday Management

From the moment my 3 friends & I arrived at Sunrise House in Kapoho we were captivated! Once inside the clean, welcoming home we were immediately drawn outside to the ocean view & were greeted by a rainbow banner. Our week's stay was relaxing & invigorating. Almost every need was met in all aspects of the house, but a picnic table on the grill area would make it perfect! Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo!!!
Wave Watching Paradise
WOW! We really enjoyed our stay at Sunrise House. The property had everything we needed. The views of the ocean were breathtaking. The waves constantly coming in were amazing. We even enjoyed the nightly serenade of the frogs. Anyone looking for a piece of privacy in paradise should check out the Sunrise House.

the location and suroundings where ideaal for our family, 2 adults and 2 boys of 4 years old. They loved the "swimmingpool".
Peace & Quiet
If you are looking for privacy and just plain beauty this is the place. We have been to the Big Island before so we kept the tourist stuff to a minimum. This is the kind of place you can just land yourself and stay amoungst the incredible beauty. The only downer of the stay was due to broken down deck furniture that should have been replaced several years ago. Otherwise awesome.

Would be nice to have a small table outside. One of the lunge chairs was broken. The lights would come on outside when it was very windy. Overall a very nice stay

We just loved vacationing at the Sunrise House. It is one of the best places we have ever stayed. Words can't describe the beauty of watching the sun rise and swimming in the warm waters of Kapoho.
Kapoho vacation 4/9-4/16/11
Those in search of extravagant accommodations and concierge service should go to the Kona side. No waving palms and sandy beaches here. Nor are there luaus or beach parties or floor shows. No crowds, either. The house is 50 years old but has been well cared for. We wanted for nothing except more time to enjoy dramatic sunrises, daily rain showers, mongooses (proper name for more than one mongoose), and dozens of tropical fish in our own private "tide pool". Instead of sandy beaches we had crashing waves. Instead of wild parties and a stream of exotic restaurants, we had books, the volcano park, the gorgeous botanical garden in the seaside gorge north of Hilo, breathtaking Akaka Falls (440'), floating in the tide pool among the tropical fish, and simple home cooked meals (I.e., beer and sandwiches). All for the price of a bare hotel room in the middle of a crowded resort. Highly recommended for those wanting to really get away.
Great place to relax and snorkel
We enjoyed our stay on spring break. Enjoyed buying some local fish to cook on the grill, can’t do that in a hotel! The tide pool with friendly fish was inviting for snorkeling along with other tide pools close by. Go and be prepared to enjoy.
Erica C.'s review of Very Private Oceanfront Beach House
Home away from home, the pictures don't do the view justice. Absolutely gorgeous!
Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada
We knew we were getting a small, older house and that was no problem. We were so excited to arrive and were telling everyone about it. But there was a bit of a shock when we got there. It's not just outdated, but actually rundown and dirty. We cleaned the microwave and fridge before we even used them. The freezer stunk badly so I cleaned that out, threw out all the food in there and bought a new baking soda box. We also bought all the cleaning supplies we used. The floors made your socks filthy. There were minor broken things all over the house. It needed a paint job badly, the ceilings were all peeling and all metal spots were rusting (more than normal "at the beach" stuff - it was obvious nothing had been done in years). None of the regular doors or screen doors closed tight which allowed the cockroaches to come in. We held out for four days but finally had to leave. We just were not comfortable with the place, knowing how much dirt we could see, what was it we weren't seeing? Like the bed and bedding?? When we left early the realty company never even bothered to ask us why. Although, before we arrived, they were extremely helpful.
We had a lovely time in Hawaii. You see so much of God in all the nature there, not a lot of man made and materialistic distractions in Kapoho, beautiful! The house was clean but the paper lining in the drawers and cabinets in the kitchen are old, worn and really dirty. That was not appealing. Otherwise, everything else was wonderful. Thank you very much. Aloha and have a great day! :o) Ana harmon

Sunrise House Review
Enjoy every minute of our stay at The Sunrise House!
Great vacation getaway
Thank you to the owners of this lovely property for sharing it. We were pleasantly surprised by the sheer beauty of the surrounding area and the privacy of Sunrise house. We saw lots of sealife and enjoyed the rain as much as the sun.

Favorite spot in hawaii
The sunrise house continues to be my favorite place on the big island. My partner and I have stayed here over and over and have made it a permanent part of our annual Hawaii vacation. The location is un like any other place on the island. The relaxation and healing that we get living by the ocean in this amazing house is outstanding, it is the kind of place that I want to selfishly keep secret but also want to share with everyone.

Perfect getaway cottage
Having a tidepool and ocean in your front yard was a perfect way to get away from it all. At first we were jittery with reports of burglaries in the area, but we took care to lock up and had no problems. The internet connection was appreciated. Snorkling in Kapoho pools is the best ever. Overall, an exceptional experience if you love privacy, relaxation and the sound of surf.
newport beach, ca
awsome place, but needs cutains in one bedroom, sheers just don'
some game and snorkle stuff would be good, i've stayed at sevral props in kapoho, this is the only one i had to go buy snorkle stuff. those are the only things wrong but i lved it and will stay again, just come knowing you have to go get some stuff.
This place is simple and plain but the view, tidal pool and location are outstanding! It was tough to deal with the possible break ins in the area and the need for extra caution and security but again the view always trumped everything else. The unit wasn't very clean te first visit but the second visit was well done. The managers were very helpful and kind ( Su and Tara) I'd recommend this unit very highly but it does need some updating and maintainece.
A Week in Paradise
It was our third trip to the Big Island. Still, we orginally planned to do more sightseeing than we did, but my wife and I found it hard to leave Sunrise House and its lagoon. We spent most of week right there on the property. We did set the alarm for 5:45 AM every morning to get up and watch the sunrise.
Hawaii Honeymoon House
We had a wonderful time. The fish in our private tide pool were so colorful. The view was breath taking...I had to watch the sunrise every morning. The only negative thing was their were a lot of tiny ants and they were having issues with break ins at the rental house so we were a little nervous but we had no issues :)
Wonderful get away!
We could not have been happier with Sunrise House. It met our expectations for a quiet cozy get away vacation. We loved the wonderful view of Kapoho Bay and the fish in the tide pool. We had lots of privacy and all the kitchen tools that you could possibly need. It was fun to read the guest house books where previous renters write about their stay to learn that Sunrise house was originally a fishing shack. Well that just adds to our little fishing shack get away. We barely went anywhere outside the Puna District during our stay. We hope to return again to explore more of the island.

Worth it for the fish
Feeding and swimming with tropical fish in your own backyard! Brilliant.
Our stay @ Sunrise House
Great, great location! Had all the necessary amenities and supplies at the house. Only downside was those noisy frogs at night. The tide pool is a very nice touch.
Stony Plain, AB, Canada
We loved sunrise House! The privacy was wonderful, although a bit worried especially the first night hearing about the break-ins. It did not happen to us as we made sure all windows and doors were locked when we were away and at night. We would highly recommend this sweet and cozy place to anyone who want peace, paradise and contentment.
Thank you for sharing your house with us!
Bicester, Oxfordshire, England
Stunning views and extrememly confortable
This was a fabulous rental, we loved eveything about it from the simple arrival procedures through to the amazing views, comfortable accomodation and the children adored the tidal pool. We did miss not having an outside dining area and table and some of the crockery was chipped and could be updated but these are minor niggles and definately do not detract from the place. We would definately love to return some day as this place is just so special.
the house was burgled, had been before.
the pool is a high tide pool, so it is not useful most of the time. otherwise the house itself is fine.
Unbelievable Views of Paradies
I am a local girl from Honolulu, but the views from this home are some of the best I have ever seen, not to mention the excellent location of peace & privacy. My 6 yr old son and I will be back same time next year.
San Francisco, CA
This property is stunning. Words and pictures can not convey the serenity and beauty of snorkeling in your own private tide pool and enjoying breakfast at the sun-drenched, ocean front dining table.
Captain Cook, HI
renovations done really made property a much more comfortable place to stay..house was very well kept, clean...grounds were well manicured
Could have stayed forever...
The location of this home is so beautiful, I want to keep it a secret! We stayed for a week, and the home and the tidepool were more than large enough for my family and another couple to share. Our favorite day spent in Hawaii was at the house, playing in the tidepool and lounging in the sun. Pictures do not do it justice - it is much more beautiful and bigger than it appears. Will stay again as soon as I can!

Lovely Piece of Paradise
Magical Sunrise. Sound of the waves pounding the rocks. Swimming with the fishes on the tidepool, This warm and cozy vacation house was perfect escape from daily routine. This is our second visit to the Big Island and we planning to be back !
The house itself is...
The house itself is lovely. I was not familiar with the area and I felt a bit unsafe there after seeing nearby properties with many security signs and razor wire fences. I also think the tidal pool wall should be opened so fish can go out. To me, there seemed to be too many fish in that small pond. Property management was very responsive to questions I had.
The location was perfect for a relaxing vacation. Close enough
This was the most well-equipped rental we had ever stayed in. Everything we needed for a great stay was conveniently there, from ice-chest to umbrella, from books, games, guidebooks and maps to extra beach towels, and much more. It was clean, and pleasantly furnished. We watched the fish in the tidepool during the day and enjoyed the singing of the frogs at night. Just remember not to park your car, or take a nap, under a coconut palm (Bonk!)
Zwolle, NA, Netherlands
Fantastic stay during our honeymoon!
This is such a wonderful vacation rental! The view is stunning. A true Hawaiian experience with great service (when we arrived the lights were on, music was playing and fresh flowers were put in several rooms!). You can easily visit all the main sites of the Big Island from here. Even when it is raining it is beautiful!
Our Wonderful Vacation
Super property, we really enjoyed the view, he sound of the win and waves and the seclusion.
Relaxation to the Max
This was the most relaxing peaceful place that I have ever visited. The tidepool and the ocean had me mesmerized. If you want touristy and convenience to tourist attractions, this is not the place to stay. It is a wonderful quiet getaway. Pahoa offers a nice little gift shop (Puna Style), good food, three grocery stores, great massage (Isis and Stephaine), tattooing opportunity (Rudedogg, and great Sunday Market for fresh fruits, vegetables, and honey. Mahalo!

Escapism…true escapism. If you want to get away from it a
Escape from the stress of the “real world”. Relax, unwind and rejuvenate your mind, spirit and soul at this special part of the world. We have always wanted to experience “old Hawaii”, and this is probably what it was like many years ago. You’ll love the privacy, along with the sounds of the surf, and the private tide pool in the back yard. The perfect place for that romantic get away. We watched the sunrise every morning and the moon rise at night. We were lucky enough to be there with a full moon also. Loved the feeling like no one was around, yet there were neighbors right next door. It is such a tranquil place.
Sunrise house had everything we needed. And the little touches, like the fresh flowers and the fruit that was there when we arrived. Mahalo to K.C. for leaving those little touches and making sure our accommodations were very clean when we arrived. It was also a great location on this side of the Big Island. Close to Champagne pond, Kapoho tide pools, Ahalanui warm pool, Issac Hale Beach Park, (where we took a great boat trip “Lava Ocean Adventures”), also Pohoiki warm pool all just a short drive away. Not to mention the great little town of Pohoa with some good places to eat there, with that warm Aloha spirit. Mahalo, for making available and sharing this little piece of paradise with us.
Next time we are on the Big Island we will definitely be staying at Sunrise House, just wish we could have had it for a longer stay. Next time will be longer.
Our stay at Sunrise House
We loved the little house and the beautiful view! We'd love to stay there again. If I am to express one complaint, it would be the condition of the kitchen sink. It was in very bad shape and rusty all around it. It could stand to be replaced. Also, the satellite antenna is extremely rusty and didn't look very stable. Overall though, it was wonderful. Casey was very sweet and helpful too. A joy.
Super Fantastic Stay!!!
This was one of those times we all said, "I sure hope the place looks like the pictures on the web!" IT DID!!! We fell in love with the locale, and hearing the surf was heavenly. I could have stayed on the patio for hours on end. We had first-time visitors with us, and they were extremely delighted! We WILL be back, and next time for much longer. No negatives here! Mahalo.

Kids and Parents loved it
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sunrise House! It was kid and adult friendly and we enjoyed every aspect of what the house had to offer. The ocean breeze was so serene and we slept with the windows open almost every hight so we could hear the beautiful cadence of the Coqui frog as well as the waves crashing into the back wall. Mahalo for the great time, we will be back next year.

Perfect Serene Hawaiian Rejuvination
Sunrise house is a magical experience. This is our 5th time renting and we will be back again. Location is perfect, the sound of the waves are so relaxing. The convenience of activity near by and the setting really help us relax and feel great every year. This is one of those great places that you only want your closest friends to know about so that you can always have your turn!

If you want serious privacy, this is the right place.
I searched for days to find a private place. This place is everything we hoped for. It is also quiet. It was nice being right on the water.
Ivo S.'s review of Sunrise House at Kapoho Beach
We love Kapoho. Even though it was a very stormy Nov. The ocean was warm and wonderful. Thank you!!!!!
Excellent location to unwind and relax
Sunrise house is a perfect location if you want to fade away for awhile. This is the antithesis to a Maui, Hawaii vacation. While both places in Hawaii are great for vacations, Sunrise House is the best for disappearing for a few days...
Great Classic Oceanfront Bungalow!
This was the fifth house I've rented with A Piece of Paradise, and overall it was the best value and the most enjoyable. The oceanfront location was outstanding, the house was very comfortable and well equipped. KC and Owen the maintenance man were very friendly and helpful. It was a thoroughly enjoyable week!
Georgeous and private
Since it was so rainy while we were there, it would have been nice to have the TV working (we are not usually TV people but we were housebound much of the time). Looked like the satellite dish is rusted out. I would also recommend that a sign about not parking below the coconuts be prominently displayed upon entering the property. Luckily we thought of this and moved our car before the big storm!!
FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, PLEASE READ BEFORE RENTING THE SUNRISE HALE
I booked the Kapoho Sunrise Hale because I wanted direct swimming access to the ocean. I was excited about staying at the Sunrise Hale because there was direct access to a natural private tide pool directly on the property. However, when I arrived, I noticed that the natural tide pool was so filthy and full of invasive sea weed. When I spoke with the neighbors, I discovered that the wall was built illegally! Further, the wall that surrounds the tide pool blocks the majority of the ocean from entering the pool; preventing the ocean from naturally cleaning the pool during the change of tides. What remains is a stagnant pool of invasive sea weed, sad little fishes forever trapped in the pool with little food to eat, and the perfect spawning grounds for every type of flesh eating bacteria imagined. I'm writing this review for the safety of other visitors who stay at the Sunrise Hale.
DO NOT ENTER THE TIDE POOL AT THE SUNRISE HALE IN KAPOHO! If you absolutely must enter it, try not to disturb the sediment at the bottom of the pool, enter at high tide only, wear your shoes, and rinse off with soap immediately after exiting the pool. If you have an open wound, do not enter the pool.
Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 10/22/2009
We regret that this guest interpreted the naturally occurring seaweed in the oceanside tide pool of Sunrise House as "filthy and invasive". Healthy tide pools in and immediately adjacent to the ocean contain seaweed and a variety of other botanical and zoological life including small fish and eels, which to some are fascinating and interesting but to others are apparently uninviting. The sea wall surrounding the tide pool actually keeps out unnatural inorganic matter that would otherwise flow into the pool with extreme high tides and storms, such as fishing nets, floats, plastic bottles, and other assorted flotsam and jetsam that sadly floats on the currents of all our oceans, including the otherwise pristine Hawaiian Pacific Ocean. The guest was incorrect to state that the sea wall "blocks the majority of the ocean from entering the pool; preventing the ocean from naturally cleaning the pool during the change of tides." Apparently the guest did not realize that that the water level of the tide pool is always exactly at sea level, fluctuating twice a day with the tides, and that the entire Kapoho area is famous for its inland tide pools, many of which are hundreds of yards from the ocean yet flush cleanly twice a day with the incoming and outgoing tides. The tides penetrate the entire community just a few feet below the surface of the ground and are constantly moving in and out. Kapoho is situated on land so porous that the seawater flushes all these tide pools, not from the surface but from underneath the porous lava on which they are perched. The "flesh eating bacteria" comment reflects a very fanciful imagination. However, the guest was correct about one thing. We and all responsible property managers recommend that guests with open wounds avoid swimming not only in any of the Kapoho tide pools but also in Kapoho Bay and elsewhere in the ocean, and that guests always shower after swimming in non-chlorinated water.

Sunrise House was an ideal place for us. The location was amazing and the simple but very adequate cottage suited our relaxed style. We had unique and special times here.
This house and its...
This house and its location is perfect for me. The foliage shields you from neighboring houses. The view of the ocean from the entire front of the house is spectacular. I'd wake early every morning (my body was on Eastern Time) and just sit and watch the waves come in and the black crabs scamper along the seawall. Truly peaceful. The house itself is airy (literally and figuratively) and of sufficient age to be comfortable (I like older homes). The tide pool was cold, not hot as expected, but fun for the family and nicely private. My only complaint is with kitchen ware (as usual). The kitchen needs a liquid measuring cup, preferably glass, and is in desperate need some microwavable cooking dishes. The blender was a bit tired, but so it goes with rental properties. Everything else was great. I could live there full-time, no problem. The Kapoho Beach Community was very nice to walk around. One word of warning for those who live in cities: if you don't like nighttime noises, you may not like the frogs that "sing" at night. It's louder than the peepers in vernal pools and way louder than the cicadas in August. The noise didn't bother me, but I read other reviews where people who were unaccustomed to natural sounds found it bothersome. Don't know whether the frogs are seasonal or year round.
Beautiful location, very private, secluded. House is older and could use a few minor repairs but who care about the house when you look outside at the ocean and the tide pool to swim in. Needs a normal size coffee pot but we were able to bring our own. We will be back. Please e-mail us with any special rates, any time of year. I come over there 3 or 4 times a year to visit my daughter who lives in HPP.

It was a dream.
House was well kept. Grounds keeper and the maintenance guy "Steve" very friendly and helpful about the sites things to do. He did not have to do that.
We were enjoyed the privacy that the house provided!
Roberta S.'s review of Sunrise House at Kapoho Beach
Location was exceptional, tide pool wonderful for swimming & snokeling, we found everything we needed and more (the 4 cup coffee maker was a disappointment, we had to borrow a 12-cup), beds very comfortable, a few minor repairs are needed but the beautiful surroundings more then compensated.

Great view, lovely pool...
Great view, lovely pool and creatures.
At night the chorus of breeze, waves, crickets and tree frogs sung us to sleep. In the morning the most beautiful sunrises. Except for the sounds of nature it was quiet, no human interruption. Bliss.
Pretty location, but problems
The location is quite nice and secluded, great view. HOWEVER, from the moment we arrived, the place was a literal furnace: the ceiling fans had been left on but made absolutely no difference; they were grossly inadequate to properly ventilate the heat that builds up as soon as the sun rises. By 6:30 each morning, the heat had started. We hurried through coffee & left, dreading our return in the evening. Very unfortunate, quite unacceptable. There needs to be much better heat ventilation - period.
Guests should be notified up front re: the din of frogs at night. This is no small issue: it is louder than the sound of the surf, and even penetrates earplugs.
From a cleanliness standpoint, the walls and ceilings need scrubbing or painting. Lots of food or dead bug splotches.
Sunrise House 3 night stay
Besides the ocean view and sunrise, the best aspect was No Vog! We drove to Kalapana, it was vogged in, as was Hilo. We always have beautiful skies and clean air in Kapoho, a great relief from our Kailua-Kona home. Mahalo for such a peaceful place. Sunrise was spectacular!
Great Location to get out of Rat Race
The Sunrise House is great for a small family or two couples (or singles). Property is kept real nice and house was clean. For price, I would think that some of the smaller appliances could be replaced (coffee maker was falling apart and toaster only toasts one side), but other than that, we were very satisfied. It is the best place to be if you don't want to be in the middle of the tourist hub bub. Very secluded. You must like to listen to the sound of the ocean and jungle chirps at night.
Wonderful privacy; Funky area with lots to do.
Loved the setting -- total privacy, (which can be rare in that area); great ocean action, but with the sea wall providing a protected space; entertaining sea life easily viewed, etc. The closest anything is about 8 miles in the town of Pahoa, which had some great restaurants & lots of local color (some of it quite scruffy). We had only one day of rain, & there were lots of good things to explore. The house itself could use a bit of tweaking. A king size bed would be nice, & the kitchen cabinets/shelving isn't very functional. There's also a weird situation with the washer/dryer back to back with access through two different rooms...., but in general it's a lovely setting and a comfortable place. I'd go back again:)

Fourth visit in 2-1/2 Years
We visit our grandchildren in this area and luckily found Sunrise House for our first visit in 2006. Since then we have been back three times and stayed there each visit. We love it because it is very private and has a view that can be found few places on earth. It is an incredibly relaxing place to spend time and is convenient to many activities and sights. It's not the Four Seasons, mind you, but that is part of the charm. It is clean, well maintained and well equipped- not to mention as "critter-free" as a place could be in that area. It is also well-equipped so you can be pretty self-sufficient. We will be back!
The furniture was of poor quality and needs updating badly. The
The next door property (by the front door) was full of garbage and debris and conveyed a poor welcome! The bed was marginal but the couch definitely needs to be replaced.
Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 10/23/2009
October 2009: Owners have replaced the living room furniture with beauitiful high-quality wood furnishings, removed a door to open up the living area, and bought all new linens and lamps. The property has never looked better and our guests just love this wonderful cottage by the sea! (We are baffled by the comment about the next-door property as there are so many trees and bushes between the properties that you cannot even see next door unless you peer through the vegetation.)

Love sunrise house
Extremely happy with our stay at sunrise house, we come back year after year. So happy to see all of the improvements to the house, really great. A more comfy couch would make it perfect! We will be back again soon.
