Description from the manager
Charming cottage with beach right on Champagne Pond! For those lucky enough to have stayed in the Beach Lots community of Kapoho, you know there are only 6 homes that front the very popular Champagne Pond, and this is one of them! Walk out the lanai,
climb the ladder into the crystal-clear inlet in front of the cottage, and swim out with the turtles to the large part of Champagne Pond. For those who haven't yet experienced Champagne Pond, it's a huge geothermally heated warm pond, with incredible snorkeling
in calm warm waters with sea turtles and colorful tropical fish.

The Woodlands, TexasGreat spot at Champagne Pond
Left on 08/16/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Staying in this lovely cottage located on a natural geo-thermally heated pool, was the perfect start to our Hawaiian holiday. The cottage is one of only three with direct access to the pond, and is relaxing and decorated nicely, with large windows (especially in the kitchen) overlooking the pond. The kitchen is beautiful and has everything you need for preparing meals. (No full size oven, but has a toaster oven) We bought local fruit at the Natural food store in Pahoa town, and the farmer’s market and enjoyed them at the picnic table overlooking the pond. The cottage was clean, beds were comfortable, and we could hear the surf crashing at night.
Champagne Pond is highlighted as a gem in the essential guide book “Hawaii the Big Island Revealed “ by Andrew Doughty, and it is indeed, a special place. There are not many spots on the east side of the big island to swim safely, and here you have a sheltered natural swimming pool heated by a volcano, and it’s steps from your back door! Champagne Pond would be a great place to introduce a child to snorkeling. Our 10 year old daughter used small fins, but the rest of us found we were fine without them. (The coral is so close in places, big fins can be awkward.) We saw lots of small tropical fish, some baby eels, shrimp and sea critters, but nothing big or scary, and did I mention the water is warm! We were spoiled!
We were there during a beautiful summer weekend, and locals do camp on the beach near the pond. (Mostly families when we were there.) Also, the public access path for people who live in the gated community is between this house and the next one, not a big deal for us, but if you want the place to yourself, either book your stay during the week, or swim early and late in the day.
We enjoyed our stay at Champagne Pond Cottage very much and would recommend it highly to anyone lucky enough to vacation on the big island. -

My wife Marilyn and I had the most wonderful time at the Champagne Pond Cottage. While in Hawaii we stayed at a very expensive hotel on O'ahu, a condominium at a resort in Kona, and at the Champagne Pond Cottage. The Champagne Pond Cottage was the most memorable place during our two weeks in Hawaii. Getting up in the morning meant eating breakfast and then into the water. Tropical fish, turtles, warm water, peace and quiet. The only thing that the was lacking was a gas grill. When we return it certainly will include more time a this beautiful spot.

Left on 03/02/2012 for a stay in February 2012
The description provided on VRBO was accurate. The only issues leading to the "almost" comment involved some minor details for the most. The pond is nice and warmer than the ocean, but 95 degress would be stretching it. However, the thermal activity on the island was down during our visit. The warning to watch out for the sharp lava in the pond needs to be heeded, but my wife truly enjoyed her time snorkeling. Only one turtle seen during our two weeks, but lots of fish/jelly fish to watch. We saw a whale on day (a long way away). Very nice facility for a coule or family, all amenities listed provided. The Kapoho area is less wet than Hilo, but rain is a daily occurence, even if ony for a few hours. Bujt it truly did not interfer with our trip to any significant degree. Overall, the perfect vacation ....almost.

Champagne pond cottage is an amazing property. We spent most of our time on the covered lanai, which is a great place to be in all weather! The kitchen was great (but watch out for the clear oven hood) with every thing you could need. The coqui frogs were an unanticipated delight (although "front door coqui" was a bit loud). We would definitely stay here again!

Our stay at Champagne cottage was very different to our other resort style accommodation in other parts of Hawaii. The location of the cottage is unbelievable! There is so much to explore on the Island, whilst being tempted just to stay put and enjoy everything you have at your doorstep.
The cottage was very clean and tidy and felt like a small home away from home.
The small community was extremely welcoming, with the locals giving us plenty of tips on some great places to go.
The booking process with Aloha Coast Realty was fantastic, amazing customer service and the team really made us feel welcome and that nothing was a bother.
Without a doubt I would recommend using both the agency and staying at Champagne Pond Cottage to anyone! -

Left on 10/18/2011 for a stay in October 2011
The only thing that might be improved as far this particular property is concerned is a relative lack of privacy - i.e. there is quite a bit of trafic to and from the pond which would not be a problem except that there are very few curtains available to ensure privacy (the only ones are in the two bedrooms). It would be very helpful to install blinds or shades in the living room and in the kitchen; having to "dress" to simply go to the kitchen or even to relax in the living room, watching people watching you, does not add to the pleasant experience this would have otherwise been.

The cottage was the best situated within the area. Although the public access to the pond runs adjacent to the property it wasn't a problem at all. The kitchen was great even without a conventional oven. My only suggestions would be to have some instruction available for use of the TV (satellite etc is unfamiliar to me) although TV was not a priority overall, and the only other issue was the small second bedroom furnished with 2 bunk beds - this is fine if kids are in the mix but, for adults a cramped for a second bedroom, a sofa bed in the living room would have suited me better. But, again not a huge issue. The cottage was well maintained and very roomy on the whole for the 3 of us. Great shower! Would encourage anyone planning a big island vacation to rent this cottage.

Left on 04/06/2011 for a stay in March 2011
Terrific location fronting a spectacular, volcanically heated lagoon. Up to date cottage, although would prefer if they installed a door on the entrance to the second room with the bunkbeds. An indoor dining table would also be a plus, as we were eating in the living room when it was raining outside. The lagoon is the highlight: protected waters, turtles (huge ones!) coming to visit, especially at night. Early morning swims/snorkels and late night soaks cannot be beat! A little loud on weekends, as locals go to the beach fronting the ocean and crank up their stereos, but very quiet at night and during the week. Do your shopping in Hilo or Keaau (not too excited about Pahoa). The Keaau Farmer's Market gives really good prices on fruits/veg/plate lunches and the adjacent Foodland is reasonably priced. They're "poke" (Hawaiian sushi) is excellent.

Perfect Location, casual and clean, with just the amenities to make us as comfortable as we could want: perfect! Our family of four couldn't have asked for more, except for perhaps a door on the kids' room. The kitchen and laundry facilities were great. Steps out the back door to heated pools connected Champagne Pond with sea turtles, ahhhh. Also, help a phone call away (we forgot the paper with the key code; got a call back w'in 10 minutes from the rental service. THIS is why you pay the extra costs for service fees! Made us realize it was worth it!). Note: the property is right next to a public access path, so people will be walking by to get to the ponds. No prob, unless you mind that kind of thing. What a great place! Would (and have done!) definitely return, even for the price. WORTh it!!!!

Left on 01/19/2011 for a stay in January 2011
We were a family of 2 teens & 2 adults at the cottage for 2 weeks. We thoroughly enjoyed out stay and would have given more stars all across except:
-there is a theft problem at the house as we received warning about our snorkel gear, but left the car unlocked one night (even within the gates of the property and community) and had flashlights and a GPS stolen;
-there is a pest problem at the cottage and it was not well resolved while we were there (roaches, mice, termites, and ants);
-the bed in the master is terribly uncomfortable.
We enjoyed staying right on the pond and snorkeling at our leisure. -

We're thrilled you had a lovely stay! Champagne Pond is such a unique place and while you cannot see the ocean waves from the house, we feel the views of the Champagne Pond itself and the private pond at the Cottage are soooo special! The misleading photo you mention does show the Champagne Pond which is within view of the cottage, but so large that the waves are just a few feet out of site! We certainly apologize for any confusion there, but stand by the representation of the property as accurate. Mahalo! Hawaii Holiday Management

Left on 10/17/2010 for a stay in October 2010
We had a wonderful stay and found the property quite clean. However, I went into the bathroom the 2nd day and found a zillion tiny ants all over the toilet paper roll that was on the wall. I ripped off the paper and flushed it down the toilet. The ants came back again and again (also found a few in the kitchen). They didn't seem to bother the TP if it was left on top the toilet tank. We had a problem with similar ants with no luck from the exterminator. Finally sprinkled cinnamon powder around the perimeter and that seems to have done the trick.
I must have water beside the bed at night and found a pinkish cloudy sediment in the glass in the morning. We bought bottled water but I wanted to see if it was an unclean glass or the water so left some in a glass again. It was the water. Frightening.
The stainless steel sink had what appeared to be rust stains all over it. I scratched at one of the spots with a butter knife and it seemed topical. I found some stove top cleaner under the sink and used it and it removed the stains completely. Other than that our stay was very nice.Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 10/18/2010

Our 5 day stay at the cottage was the highlight of our trip to the Big Island. It was exactly what we were looking for - off the beaten path, beautiful and relaxing (we had some noisy next door neighbors for part of our stay, but that's the luck of the draw sometimes). The pond itself was a joy to swim and snorkel in, but if you're looking for more sea life, there is a deep, protected ocean pool right next to the pond that is easily accessible (you can swim to it from the pond during high tide) and provides excellent snorkeling. We'd choose to visit again without hesitation.

The windows all opened wide and the breezes kept the cottage at the perfect temperature. just lovely.

This little cottage was just perfect! Clean, inviting and quiet it would work great for a family, but was even better as a romantic getaway for just me and my husband. There is a bit of foot traffic next to the house during the day though, because it's next to the pond access for the neighborhood. We only saw about one set or family a day though.
The Pahoa/Kapoho area has tons of nature places to explore and a very untouristy feel so it's perfect for getting away from the mega resorts. Pahoa town is not the kind of place to go window shopping, so you'll need to head 40 minutes to Hilo for those kinds of activities though.
The pond is kind of small and only has a few fish varieties, but the perfect temp. makes up for the size and would be great for kids. Besides, the tide pools are just down the street and the snorkeling is excellent. I'll definately be back in the future! -

Champagne Pond Cottage far exceeded our expectations. Once you walk thru the front door of the cottage you know you are in a magical place. They have kept the integrity of this charming cottage while upgrading the kitchen and bath. The kitchen is a delight to cook in w/a 280 view of the ponds. In the evening the tradewinds blow thru the main bedroom to keep you cool. We loved everything about the cottage and hope to stay here again!

Virginia Beach, VA, United StatesBest Kept Secret - Totally Amazing Location and Awesome Cottage
Left on 04/26/2009 for a stay in April 2009
The interior is beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice. Plenty of room for the 5 of us. Kitchen is beautiful - really appreciated the supplies that were on hand for washing dishes & laundry. Beach towels provided too! Location is too amazing for words. Privacy was much appreciated. We usually saw at least 1 turtle a day, and as many as 5 at a time. Much better than staying at Kapoho Tide Pools. So convenient to Hilo & Volocano Activities. Highly recommend this Cottage!

My husband and I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience at this property. From the gorgeous view and modernized renovation with top of the line appliances(found 1957 edged into the fireplace)this is just the first impression of this home until one steps out onto the patio. From the yard, you can climb down and swim or snorkle in the wonderfully warm pond with sea turtles and tropical fish. Even when it rains the swimming is great. We enjoyed walking around the tropical, well cared for gated community. Folks from Colorado used the walkway to the ponds next to our property and commented that we had found the most beautiful location that they had seen in their 3 months on 3 of the Hawaiian Islands. A view point south of Pahoa is now the place to see lava from Kilauea flowing into the ocean. This home is well away from the hustle and bustle of the Hilo area. We will definitely recommend this property to friends & family and hope to return soon. Jim & Vicki Clark Kuna,Idaho USA

We really enjoyed our stay, with the exception of a couple of things.
1. We requested a phone number to activate the gate from the house phone when we had guests from Wai Opae, but the agent never called back with it.
2. There is an extremely strong septic smell around the front of the house...could be venting, but it was quite unpleasant.
3. Cockaroach!! Several very large ones.
I lived in Hawaii for 5 years, so it wasn't a huge problem to me, but my partner was a bit grossed out. Alot of people would be.
