Description from the manager
Honu's Hideaway is one of those hidden gems that you appreciate more with every step you take through the house and grounds. Completely remodeled in 2010, the owner spared no expense to make the house comfortable and stylish, always thinking of
the guest experience. It's a perfect place to relax with the large living/dining/kitchen area under the high ceilings that are covered in beautiful tropical woods. The home has a contemporary feel with nice appliances, dishes, linens, and the most gorgeous
granite countertops we've seen.

Left on 03/01/2012 for a stay in February 2012
Absolutely beautiful house and yard. The house is roomy, with loads of windows and 3 French doors to access lanai and clear, warm tide pool in the garden. Very well stocked kitchen, and many thoughtful extras provided by the owner...umbrellas, flashlights, floating mats and some snorkeling gear for the pond. There is a BBQ and plenty of room to eat on the lanai table. Wash and dryer on site. The garden is lovely with lots of flowering plants. Location is good...close to Volcano national park and good acces to Hilo and the airport (about a 40min drive on good roads). Kathy the owner is very friendly and lives close by if you need any help or advice...she stopped in to let us know that the lava was flowing so we made a quick trip out after dark to see it....the kids were thrilled. There are some nice restaurants in pahoa if you feel like a meal out. We had a fabulous, relaxing holiday with all the comforts of home and the added bonus of paradise outside!

Los Angeles, CA, United StatesBeautiful House in a friendly gated community near heated ponds!
Left on 02/14/2012 for a stay in February 2012
The house is BEAUTIFULLY furnished with Hawaiian decor. The kitchen is stocked with good quality appliances, cookware, and dishes. The garden is gorgeous, and there is a private pond you can swim in. We had breakfast in the lanai every morning, and listened to birds and frogs sing throughout the day. The Champagne Pond (walking distance), the Hot Pond, and the Warm Pond are all near by and is a fantastic experience - the ocean water is naturally heated, is shallow enough to be able to walk, and you can open your eyes underwater and it doesn't hurt! If you snorkel, you can see fish. The owner lives 2 doors down and was very nice. She checked in from time to time to make sure we were doing ok. She left us with her favorite guide book, detailed map of the east side of hawaii with every street, and her personal recommendations of things to do in the area which were right on (farmer's market, beaches, etc.) The house is located in a gated community and felt very safe. It also had a combination lock for the front door so we didn't have to worry about carrying a key around that might get lost or stolen. We were ABSOLUTELY satisfied with the house and would LOVE to return someday!!!

Loved it from the minute we rolled in the house is very nice clean and newish remodel. The kitchen is great has everything you need and more. The only downside was the house across the pond that you share the pond with put up this awful orange plastic fencing and a total eyesore when you are in the pond looking out. Other than that epic.

Left on 01/17/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We had a very nice vacation. The house was great. A few things would make the house excellent: 1) the owner needs to replace the burners in the barbeque. 2) The wireless internet connect is patchy and slow. This should be improved or clearly communicated to future renters. 3) Movies are not available on the TV, although I believe it was advertised that movies are available. A password is needed, which probably means the owner needs to pay more. This was not a big deal for us, but should be clearly communicated. 4) Providing a couple of bicycles would really add to experience. There is very nice bike riding in the area, and we would have ridden bikes to the snorkle area in vacation land. We very much appreciated that the house had many modern conveniences and pretty much everything worked well. This would be a great house for a family vacation.

Thank you for your great review! We'd like to address a few of the points you brought up. BBQs take a lot of abuse in our tropical, salty air and we feel that replacing a working BBQ is irresponsible to the environment. It works great and we'll keep it until it needs to be replaced. Same issue with bikes. There is no interior place to store bikes and they would rust quickly and have to be thrown into a landfill. Internet service is very sparse in the Kapoho area and Honu's Hideaway is one of the few properties that actually has internet available. It works great in the back bedrooms! We don't advertise that movies are available. There is a DVD player in the house and a rental store in Pahoa. Thanks again for your suggestions, we will continue to strive for complete guest satisfaction! Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday Management

Left on 01/10/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Four of us (a family with 2 children, 12 and 8 years old) rented the house for a week in January of 2012. It is a great place for a family vacation. The house is beautiful, the private warm pond is fantastic. The warm Champagne pond where you can swim with turtles is a 3-minute walk. The weather was very nice, and it was a great place to stay while exploring the eastern part of the island.

Honu's Hideaway was the perfect vacation rental. With lots of thoughtful extra's such as outdoor shower and a comprehensive range of kitchen ware. The comfortable outside room with ceiling fan was an ideal place to relax. We loved the warm pond in the garden and would definitely stay at this rental again. Stock up before you arrive the local supermarket is not cheap but the Sunday farmers market is great for produce and fruit.

Honolulu, HIHad a great time - would come back again!
Left on 11/29/2011 for a stay in November 2011
The place is even nicer than the pictures, and very clean. The beds were quiet comfortable. The snorkel equipment was better than what we brought - they must have just purchased new equipment.. We had a couple questions here and there, and everytime we called the rental company they answered and helped us through our question. We would definitely choose this place over other places in the area if we come back. Only downsides: the railing into the private pond is made of PVC piping (common in the area) but was not strong enough to support my father who is heavy and elderly. He had booked the place because he wanted to swim in the pond but because he couldn't rely on the rail he had to forgo it. The rest of us (3) swam it in many times throughout the days, it was fabulous and I liked it better than the other house ponds we saw. The other downside was that this vacation was during my school studies so I had picked a place with internet access but there wasn't really any after all (long story but the owner says she is working on this - so could be fixed soon).
bottom line - if you are staying in the area this is the place to pick. -
Denver, ColoradoTerrific Thanksgiving Vacation
Left on 11/28/2011 for a stay in November 2011
We stayed at Honu's Hideaway in Kapoho Thanksgiving week. The location is away from the city and just steps away from the ocean. The house was fantastic and the kids were so happy to have a pond in the yard. It was terrific to be able to swim around in the evenings and in the morning before heading out to see the sights. The house had everything we needed from snorkel equipment to swim noodles. We had plenty of room for the five of us. The Kapoho tide pools were just a few minutes down the road and the Ahalanui warm ponds were a great place to relax.

Left on 11/11/2011 for a stay in October 2011
My wife and I spent the third leg of our 50th birthday vacation here at Honu's Hideaway. We spent a few days on the Kona side then a couple days in the rain forest past Volcano Village and our last four days relaxing at this home. The only thing we might have changed about our trip would have been to stay here longer. The drive towards Kapoho is spectacular. Once you are inside the gate the neighborhood it is unassuming, quiet and feels like you are home. Anyone you might pass on the road has a big smile for you and a wave. The owner of Honu's Hideaway greeted us shortly after we arrived and was a fabulous host. The house is clean, inviting with everything anyone would need to have a great stay. The pond was GREAT! We spent hours in it day and night. The best time snorkeling was mid morning when the sun was on the water.
We will definitely be back here in the not so distant future for another adventure. Next time we will stay here the whole time. -

Left on 10/18/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We loved the wonderful place with the tasteful interior right from the beginning. The house has everything you need (and more) for a brilliant vacation. It was not easy to convince our son to leave the tide pool.
We found the location convenient for day trips to Volcano National Park, snorcheling at the Kapoho tide ponds and other sites. The variety of recommendations for restaurants provided helped a lot. On arrival, the nice owner came to greet us and provided some additional helpful information. We liked sitting outdoor at night listening to the frogs and watching the stars. It made us feel far away from reality.
The only downs:
We needed someone to help us to open the lock for the key pick up (technical explanation could be improved). However, someone from the agency came imediately to help. The next restaurants and shops are 8 miles away, but the location in return is nice and quiet. -

This is the greatest little place. Actually not so small. The remodel makes it like new and it is so private and quiet for being in a subdivision. For us who have been to the islands often, we could have never left and been perfectly comfortable and entertained. The warm swimming pond is ono (the best), we never even went to the beach. We will be returning in a few months and will look no further than Honu's Hideaway for our stay. We have rented other houses in the area before, but this just can't be beat. Thanks again we'll be back soon!!!!!

La Crescenta, CAGreat Property, Miserly Rental Management
Left on 07/14/2011 for a stay in July 2011
The house is actually better than the advertisement photos show. Besides the crystal-clear, perfect-temperature pond, all of the beautifully landscaped plants are lushly tropical, flowering, or edible. The nearby owner was extremely helpful. Our biggest regret is that we didn't reserve more nights here before moving on to Kona.
I wish that I could go on about the property, but I must now tell about the management company. When one of our party was not able to join us, I asked for a refund of the difference. (Our Kona rental immediately credited our card.) I received this from Hawaii Holiday Vac. Rentals:
"Aloha Jim,
Mahalo for the note!
We're only able to adjust rates for fewer guests while the arrival is more than 60 days in advance. Once the balance is paid in full we're not able to make rate adjustments. Sorry about that!
We're thrilled to hear that you had a great stay at Honu's Hideaway and hope you'll keep us in mind for future visits!
Warmest Aloha,"
My suggestion would be to reserve for the minimum party in case anyone should cancel. If you happen to show up with 6 people instead of 4, remind the rental company that they are not 'able' to adjust within 60 days of occupancy.Response from Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals - 07/16/2011

We can not say enough about what a great place to stay Honu's Hideaway was to relax and edulge ourselves with while visiting The Big Island. It was the biggest part of making the trip very memorable. We had great weather, enjoyed Pahoa, hiked to the lava flowing into the sea, shopped at the farmers markets, snorkeled in several areas, kayaked near the Cptn Cook monument, and took in all the lush scenery in the area. We were pleasently surprised at how much there was to do in the Hilo side of the island so close to where we were staying. The house had all the conveniences of home and more. Wifi was great to have so we could use our iPad and post photos and video to Facebook as it was happening. Best of all was the warm, convenient, and inviting natural pool next to the house that we lazed in daily. We even got tothe point that we liked the sound of the prolific sound of the Coquis. Left on 10/25/2010 for a stay in October 2010
We live in Waikoloa Village and were disappointed that major construction was going on on the house directly across from the house's pond. It wouldn't hurt for your staff to wonder these neighborhood's every once and a while to see what type of construction or whatever is going on. We could of saved 700.00 by staying home and listen to construction noise. I know it's in your contract, but pretty if I was coming from the mainland and had that crane and nailgun blasting all day. The place is nice but waking up on our last morning with a crane installing the roof trusses was a bummer! i personally won't recommend your company to anyone I know plus I mention neat places to mainland visitors when they want to go see the volocano but I wont' be recommending your company. Mahalo for your time!

This was so unfortunate! The house being built went up in record time two lots away from our wonderful rental, Honu's Hideaway. Of course we have no control over construction noise in the neighborhood, but we do have many other great properties that we would have been happy to relocate these guests to. Unfortunately, they didn't let us know about the construction noise until the day they checked out. We really do care about our guests' experience! This is the cornerstone of our business! Left on 08/26/2010 for a stay in August 2010
Honu's Hideaway is an amazing place, the best rental house/condo I've ever stayed in. Beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Great snorkeling in the backyard pond and in the ocean just across the street. One warning: the pond is deep and drops off quickly. If you have children that are not strong swimmers, you'll need to keep a close eye on them. But they loved the house-provided rafts and floats.
Well supplied kitchen that had almost every utensil you could think off. After hitting the market in Pahoa (about 8 miles away) for food you'll never need to leave.
Wonderful place, the entire family loved it. -
