sea-side, volcano-view, rice-paddies, serene, private, beach, unique, romantic
Nestled where two fresh-water rivers run into the Lembok Straights of the Indian Ocean, Villa Campuan was selected as ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST's lead feature in the "Exotic Homes Edition" in August 2009 for its unique design, luxurious appointments and magnificent setting. Designed by Linda Garland, built by a team of Sumatran master carpenters, the owners spared no expense in making the home environmentally friendly( built with all re-cycled wood) and seamlessly integrated into the natural setting.
In front lies the ocean and behind towers Bali's main 12,...000 foot volcano, Mt. Agung, the 'sacred mother of Bali.' To the north over the terraced rice fields is the Seraya mountain range whose cooling breezes blow in most nights. Thus the property is a 360 degree experience.
The villa is actually six villas organized at the ocean's edge with 2500 square foot long house Villa Campuan) which serves as the living room/dining room house for the villa.
Villa Selak is on the other side of the river across a small foot bridge for maximum privacy. It is fronted by the lotus pond in which sits a yoga deck and the fesh-water swimming pool at the ocean's edge just beyond. It has an king size bed downstairs and a single size bed upstairs, and a full bath with a two-person marble tub.
The villa come with the friendly staff of ten people: two cooks, three house caretakers, three gardners and two night security men there all day to meet your every need, including cleaning, and providing a delicious breakfast provided in the price of the villa. Lunch and dinner can be arranged for an additional amount. They are all smiles and will climb the many cocoanut trees to give you some "ayer kalapa muda," young cocoanut milk, or fresh-sqeezed orange juice, Bintang beer or sodas all day.
There are surf breaks nearby and surf guides can be arranged by the staff and are recommended to insure happy integration into the line-up. The local break, Pura Delam, can generate waves from two-feet to double overhead depending on the season and the swells. You can see the break from the living room/dining room house to tell what the swell is doing. It's a five minute drive away.
There is snorkeling right out front for lobster and sea life observation and excellent diving all over the area including wreck diving in nearby Tabanan. Bali is a haven for all water sports.
Facials and massages can be had at the villa with notices to the staff and are highly recommended and inexpensive. Also, recommended is to hire a car and driver by the week so that your freedom of movement is assured. It is NOT recommended to drive in Bali as the traffic behavior is quite wild and unpredictable. Cars and drivers are also very reasonable in cost and can be arranged before or after you hit the island.
We can arrange the pick up at Denpensar Airport and drive you the 1 1/2 hours to Villa Campuan where your smiling staff will greet you warmly and show you to your rooms.
A ten-minute drive away is a often deserted white sand beach (Pasir Putih) about a half-mile long with lovely swimming and a few warungs serving fresh seafood and cold drinks right on the sand. Massages and crafts are also available.
East Bali may be the last refuge of the true Balinese Culture where festivals, temple ceremonies, and rice farming abound as they have done for centuries. Women in sarongs carrying temple offerings on their heads along bamboo-lined back roads are sights that will linger in one's mind long after you are back home. Many villages in the area are craft-oriented specializing in silver jewelry, weaving, ikat, fishing, and baskets, all ready to be explored.
Many local restaurants abound and both the luxurious Alila Hotel and Aman Kila Hotels are located within 45 minutes and have a number of fine, gourmet restaurants should you want a change of dining pace.
Most of all, Villa Campuan offers a chance at renewal, re-invigoration, romance, and recreation in uncommon amounts. Though the journey there may be long, upon arriving only the power of the destination will remain as you have successfully traveled into another world.Read more

My wife and I got to spend 3 days as part of our honeymoon at villa campuhan. We especially enjoyed the peace and friendlyness of the villa as well as the great food there.
For couples and families who are seeking for a hideaway from "everyday life" villa campuhan is a great place to go!

Our stay at Villa Selak was the highlight of our trip to Bali! The location was gorgeous, tranquil and extremely private. The architecture and decor of the Villa's are quite unique and impressive. It was interesting just touring the property. The food was extremely fresh, flavorful and prepared to our individual liking. But more importantly, the staff was lovely and the service was superb. We felt the manager of the Villa took personal care to ensure we had an excellent vacation. He arranged everything from yoga and massage to surfing and touring the surrounding areas. There was nothing he could not arrange, and he took time to teach us about the Balinese culture. We absolutely loved our stay at Villa Selak and thank Barbara for opening up her home for others to enjoy.

We Stay in Villa Campuhan for a few days and I have to say that from the moment that we arrived the service was great and easy to deal with.
Our villa (villa Selak) was beautiful, surrounded by lotus flowers and a lot of nature. The view to the ocean was just amazing. The whole property is beautiful and charming .
The location is just magic, however a bit difficult to find but this is a minor detail.
The staff working was very nice and extremely helpful.

The place / the villas
Food (lunch & dinner : a bit expensive for Bali, but worth it)
A little lack of intimacy in the villa Selak (windows all around the bedroom + curtains a little bit to small to cover the windows efficiently)
A lack of maintenance in the villa (some windows can't be open because of rust, hot water stopping sometimes, stained mosquito net...)
The staff is nice and helpful, but lack some professionalism for this category of place in my opinion
The breakfast, very basic.
Big cons :
Local teenagers coming repetitively on the beach and taking pictures of us at the villa or at the swimming pool !
Very dirty beach (a perfect view on garbages from your swimming pool..)
Conclusion : the place is quit amazing, but be prepared to pay principally for the beauty of it. If 330$ or more per night is not that much for you, you may love it, but ... it's a little overpriced for me.
Ps : Some of the point in my cons are not understandable in that category of place... Read more
Rebuttal to “Getting too comfortable with its success?”
At Villa Campuhan, we take every positive review, of which we’ve had many, in a good light but we take the negative reviews even more seriously as we are always in a quest to improve our paradise and to sharpen our abilities to serve our guests with the utmost care.
Therefore, let us take your points on one by one:
Your contention that there is a “lack of intimacy in Villa Selak” may stem from not agreeing with our overall philosophy that our villas are located in one the most beautiful natural surroundings in the world and our architectural concept was to let the indoor/outdoor elements have an easy relationship with each other. Villa Selak is quite private, all alone on the other side of the river with its own swimming pool and lotus-pond, we did not feel that thick and heavy window coverings fit our ideal. The windows are completely covered by curtain panels that give privacy but still let in ambient light. If you had asked our staff, they would have been more than happy to further close off the window openings during your stay to help you sleep later in the morning or to feel a greater sense of privacy. In this matter, our aesthetic may just not match yours.
Villa Selak was one of our first creations and we have already taken steps to increase the amount of hot water available by upgrading the plumbing so thank you for giving us that feedback.
The ‘lack of professionalism’ of our Staff is something we find extremely confusing and, in our first year of operation and our hundreds of bookings, this is the first time such a thing has been said. We have carefully selected the finest people in East Bali to work at Villa Campuhan and they have become our family. They are sharp, courteous, and intent on giving each guest the best possible experience at all times. We encourage them to interact with the guests as if they were hosting them in their own home. We do NOT encourage the formalness that one might find at other top hotels because it is our philosophy that you only get to know Bali if you get to know the Balinese. Our beautiful staff is the key to that understanding. Again, you have the right to seek some other atmosphere but you will only find easy friendliness and attention to detail at our villas.
As to the breakfast, each day we give the guest a wide variety of choice as to fruit, juices, coffee, tea, omelets or eggs any style, pancakes with coconut syrup made locally, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. It’s a basic meal, yes, but wholesome and nutritious and lovingly prepared to order. We do not offer a buffet a la larger hotels.
Villa Campuhan is a member in good standing of Jasi Village. It is true that many locals like to walk along the river and visit the ocean near our place. After all, Bali is their country and the ocean belongs to everyone. We do not try to restrict our neighbor’s access to the natural pleasures of our area. It would be rude and the worst aspect of tourism. However, we will make greater efforts to encourage our neighbors to respect our guests’ privacy. The taking of unwanted photos should never happen. You are right about that.
The problem of Balinese beaches is endemic to the entire island. The Balinese, not so long ago, were a banana leaf culture. Everything was wrapped in leaves so, after using, the leaves were thrown on the ground where they became mulch. The Balinese still have this proclivity to discard packaging on the ground whenever they are through with it, which means plastic, cardboard, etc. Our staff takes a daily trash sweep early in the morning before the guests arise but, thanks to your complaint, we have talked to them about doing it more extensively and more frequently during the day. We are fighting a cultural problem here so we must do what we are able to do.
The value of money is relative. Some would say that $330 for a night in paradise in an Architectural Digest-featured oceanfront home is a bargain. We truly regret that you did not have a better time and that this is what you took away from the experience. We try our best to make each guest happy but because of aesthetic and value differences, we know this is not always possible. At any rate, thank your for your frankness and know that, where we agree, we have taken steps so that the next guest will not experience these inconveniences.

Honeymoon Escape in Real Bali

Loved this place! My (new) husband and I stayed here for 7 days and we were treated like royalty. It was incredible. We had breakfast on our patio every morning served to us at whatever time we wanted- whether it was 7am or noon. They arranged all of our 'programs' such as climbing the tallest volcano in Bali. We had the entire resort to ourselves for most of our stay, so we literally felt like royalty. It was amazing. We were concerned about how far out it might be from things, but it was actually very close to everything we wanted. We rented motorbikes and traveled all around the area and saw the most incredible things. It was truly the real side of Bali. Seminyak is fun and touristy, Ubud is just touristy, This place and the location is relaxing and provides everything one could ask for. My favorite part is that they overdelivered on what I expected to walk into- which is a fantastic feeling.

Villa Selak on the volcanic East Coast of Bali is a top location away from it all, right beside the crashing ocean and small river estuary. The views of the ocean and the foothills of Mt agung are amazing and the sunrises are the most beautiful you could imagine. Service is excellent, the staff are lovely and the food is unbelievably good cooked by an inspired and passionate chef who uses all locally grown and sourced fresh ingredients to cook delicious Balinese food. The villa itself is beautifully decorated with local artefacts and with wide verandahs for lounging on, a lily pond right outside the door and a pool which looks out to the ocean. The grounds and other villas at Campuhan are stunning. There are no TVs but Wi-Fi is available. This is a true getaway for those looking for something special. One small gripe - it would be lovely to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room.

We really enjoyed the view, the great service, and wonderful food at Campuan. Everything was just right for us. This is an exotic location away from the tourist areas and will allow you to truly enjoy Bali. I really can't find anything negative. It is 2.5 hours from the airport. You should use their driver as it is difficult to find on your own. Close to white sand beach.
